I’m so glad I found you and this video. I have hundreds of pencils that I hardly use because they scare me. In the past I’ve just bumbled my way through making a horrible mess. You’ve given me hope, and I’m going to practice again. Thank you. 😀💜
FANTASTIC! They are the greatest medium, LOL, well I think so anyways. LOL. I love that you have such an impressive supply available. Draw, nothing could be better. Cheers!
You know I've always considered myself a pretty decent coloured pencil artist, and I have a very light hand and love the medium. I love layering It's kind of my speciality, I'm known for it. But even with all that experience I learnt some stuff and you explained it so well. I'm saving this video so next time someone says to me "oh wow is that really coloured pencils how do you do that I can send them this video. Thank you.
WOW! I love your coloured pencil story and you get it about the light hand. Thank you for sharing and thank you for watching. Cheers
I hate layering, it's boring and time consuming.
I just use markers for better results ✅
@@SUGAR_XYLERusually I try and understand why people do what they do. Sometimes, as with you here, I feel I would be defiling myself by understanding you.
Idk why I've become such an impatient artist..I really need to relearn to be more patient when it comes to colored pencils...and ofc layering😔
There is no getting around it, it’s definitely a patience oriented material if you’re looking to do realism. Cheers!
Try to listen to something while you’re drawing
I too am impatient that's why I mostly just draw.
I don't think I have ever seen colored pencils look that pretty. I love it!
Awe, thank you. Cheers
I’m not really good at colouring although I love working with pencils. This is by far the best tutorial on layering I’ve seen. You’ve inspired me to go back to this medium.
Thrilled to hear this, this is a wonderful medium, keep at it. Cheers
So pleased I have discovered your channel 🤩 Your expertise with coloured pencils is fantastic! Thanks for sharing it.
I have never been able to mix my colours the way I have in my head. This tutorial has really changed the way I layer and use colour. Thank you!!!!
You are so welcome!
Woow! I've never seen a very detailed and clear explanation about how to use color pencils and apply the layers masterfully as you do. Definetely subscribed!! I'm gonna use this awesome techinique to draw my parakeets
Oh wow, fantastic, so glad it has helped. I would love to see a parakeet drawing you did. Cheers
Maam thank you soo much for teaching blending of colour pencils...I am a patient with severe emotional distress and this video really helped me to calm my mind ...love from India maam
Learned so much. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind comment. Cheers
Love blending colors, it takes me hours and many, many color pencils and colorless pencils to finish an adult color page, worth it!❤😊
I don't have the patience for that...🥱
That’s fantastic, fans of blending, YEAH!!!
It is a process that each artist comes to and uses or does not. What ever process works for you, I’m all for it. Happy drawing, cheers!
I am a "line drawer" familiar with pencil so this video has been invaluable. Thank you. I haven't tried the exercise yet, but already the narrative reflects the fundamentals of color mixing I have already learned and introduced me to the refined techniques I need to make my colored drawings look more professional.
Thank you so much that the skills you taught in the video just make the whole thing even more interesting. The scribbling stroke is new to me and really useful. 🥰
I am good in graphite pencil but not good in colour pencils. You gave me so many ideas about this. Thank you so much....
Thank you so much Jeanette, I really really enjoyed watching you explain to us all how to use our coloured pencils to create a beautiful and vibrant layered effect. I found this so useful and helpful too. That’s why I’ve subscribed and given you a thumbs up too
YEAH!!! Thank you so much, and happy drawing. Cheers
I am totally mixed media. I start with watercolor and add what ever next. But the lightest area I tape off to get the colors to be true. I love layers! Great video!!!❤
Great, cheers
Wonderful art work, enjoy watching
Thank you! Cheers!
You are so awesome. I'm so happy to be living at the same time as you. You help me do much in my resolve to live a more intentional and better informed life.
So glad you explained when to layer light colors first and when to use dark first. I always hear different opinions and your explanation makes sense. And it's super helpful to see them in action!
You're welcome. Cheers
It is far easier to darken a light background base color than lighten a dark one. To lighten a dark one requires excessive amounts of the light color. Unless one can work with one of the masking media. I've been tempted to try the Pencil and Brush powder but it is my understanding it needs a fixative to work properly.
If your subject is a base dark, it is not as difficult as you actually describe above, I do it all the time and work with the paper to control the levels of dark to light. It actually does NOT require an excessive amount of light colour. For me, it is far easier to work in this manner than build light to the darkest when the overall subject is going to be dark. Layering is the key and not go dark right off the bat at a 4 level. Never use masking media as it is impossible to remove without smearing the coloured pencils. Check my work, you can clearly see from my dark subjects that is definitely not as you might think or as difficult. Cheers
@@Drawingwithcolour
I'll give it a try. But l may be fighting the paper.
I have just discovered ered your channel and I love it. I'm an artist but not a colored pencil artist. I just assumed I couldn't do it but the way you teach I think I will try it. Hope you have a great week.😊
FANTASTIC!!! Trying to build the coloured pencil nation is awesome and I hope you do give it a try as it is a wonderful and fun medium to work with. Cheers
Very inspiring and full of useful information! Thank you 💙
You are so welcome! cheers
Beautiful. I have a long way to go. Love this tutorial. Thanks so much.
Thank you, cheers
I can’t wait to try this! Great information, thank you.
Great tutorial, great patience and great video! This may just take my top spot for my most favourite colored pencils tutorial. Job well done!❤🎉
I am very thankful to have found your videos. Working on collecting and developing colored pencil skills with not so much waste of product and muddying and ruining the tooth of the paper. Whew! I haven't had any art lessons really and people always thought I was quite the artist. I am age 67 and trying to develop AND re develop art skills with a great loss of vision, perspective skills that once were so natural to me. I have quite a few sets of pencils, Some expensive but NOT the most expensive better quality. I would like to work in the best pastel/chalk pencils as well. My best pencils are Derwent Softs and Irotijen brand. I would great appreciate guidance for a person like myself that is beginning again.
Thank you so much.
I would also like to advance to watercolors as I could one do that as well.
I am fine with mixing up the mediums and techniques as well in the same piece to great effect.
Thanks for reaching out, and I’m so glad these videos are helping. Keep going , this is a great medium. Cheers
Very informative, thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome, cheers
Loved your video ma'am.
It was definitely a great aid for me.
I am hoping to see more of your art works with similar teachings.
And i would love to have some tips on oil based pencils and charcoal.
Please do consider sharing some views on them too.
Thank you for the comment. I would love to do one on oil based pencils and charcoal. Keep an eye open, and many thanks for watching. Cheers
Very good tutorial. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Jeannette, this was fun to do 🌼

Great tutorial, love the way you edit and present info on screen
Thank you so much Jeanette,I am learning so much. I am a colorist and my favorite books are botanicals. My artist husband is teaching me alot about highlights and shading. I use mainly Polychromos, Irojiten and Luminance. We didn't know about Pixabay, this is going to help us both. 😊 from snowy Nova Scotia
Hello to you in beautiful Nova Scotia, from BC. You are so welcome. and I’m happy they are helping. Great to hear from a Canuck. cheers
[10:40] When you find out that your regular "circle coloring" is really a professional technique 😶😂🥰
LOL, that is too funny, but true. Cheers
Wow! Thank you Jeanette, I so look forward to watching your beautiful work…gifts…and definitely talents! This word-amazing is overused these days but it’s 🎯legit 💯when you make simple colored pencils your lovely co-stars…❤😘
Loved this!❤
Thank you, cheers
Thank you for this instructive video. Can you please advise what type of paper to use for colour pencils? I do see the website link to the brand Stonehenge White, but the tooth/gsm is not clear to me. Thank you.
Great question, Stonehenge White is the paper name from Legion papers and it only comes in one GSM and one tooth. There are a lot of other papers in this brand under the name Stonehenge, as you probably can see, but the paper you want is Stonehenge White, here is the link legionpaper.com/stonehenge-white. Happy drawing, Cheers
Awesome tips, thank you. I would love to see this blended too.
I'm not an artist who uses a lot of blending. So you won't see me blending, particularly with solvents very often, it's just not my preference and I still get amazing results without it. But as I tell everyone, I'm just one artist, if blending works for you fantastic. Cheers and thanks for the comment.
@@Drawingwithcolour if I were as talented as you I probably wouldn’t want to blend either lol!
@@Hollowdub LOL I think that is the funniest and most awesome comment I've ever received. Cheers J
Really helpful, thanks.

It's a really amazing art tutorial video❤❤❤
Great work. Thank you
Thank you. Cheers
You're my new teacher, Mrs Sirois :) 🍎
That has helped me so much. Thank you. I'm greatly encouraged to try again. I usually work in water colour, cand I'd, kind of, given up pencils but really want to conquer them. How much does paper make a difference? I have wax based pencils. Thanks again.
Hi, and thank you for the comment. So happy to hear this has encouraged you to try again, yes for sure, do try, this is an amazing medium and a great way to express yourself through art. As for paper, for sure it can make a difference. Papers I recommend are Stonehenge White, Fabriano Artistico Hot Press, Strathmore Multi-Media 400 series. You need a paper that has a bit of tooth. Hey, consider signing up for my monthly free newsletter, you’ll receive the Works on Paper handbook where I discuss pencils, papers and whole lot more. Just go to my website, this may inspire you even more 😀 Cheers
Thank you so much for that. I will. Much appreciated.@@Drawingwithcolour
Paper makes a huge difference. Try out a lot!
I’m sorry to read what happened to you. Social media can go from the sublime to the ridiculous. Anyway I didn’t even know you were on utube but now that I do I’ve subscribed. I’ve become very impatient wit my layering and need to back up a few steps. Thanks for this Jeanette.
I don't know if I am doing anything wrong but when I try to layer like this, the fourth or fifth colour don't really pass onto the paper. it's like the paper feels waxy or is already fully saturated even if I try to apply very light pressure. Am I using the wrong paper or the wrong coloring pencils? 😢
Hi, It could be one or the other, or both, or something else. Can you let me know what you’re using, pencils and paper?
Yep, I also have this problem. I use Faber Castells from the cheaper side and basic printing paper usually and the surface gets clogged quite fast. Switching to more expensive stuff is, well, an investment I'm not ready for but then again, not using the cheap stuff is already a waste.
I’m a beginner, or more accurately a restart. I loved drawing but stopped for many years so I’m trying to restart. I have a dumb question question: what sort of paper would you suggest using for practice? I really don’t want to spend money on the good stuff if I’m practicing technique unless it’s necessary, and I always hear others say “don’t use a sketch book or sketch paper”. What should I use?
Thanks for reaching out. Can I ask a quick question back for clarification. What do you mean others say “don’t use a sketch book or sketch paper”? Is this referring to cheaper paper?
I’m assuming that’s what they’re referring to. I understand a person would want to use the best paper, etc for a finished piece that they’re selling or that was a commission, but I just want to practice the things I’m learning and have fun with it.
I hope that makes sense.
@@pairof3s yes for sure it does, I love this question, and know exactly what you’re talking about. How to practice a lot, have fun and not use the expensive paper while doing that. Ok, yes for sure, an inexpensive paper is good for practicing. Quick quick on papers, the MORE expensive papers you hear me, or other coloured pencils pro talk about and I’m sure you also know, are made of 100 % cotton fibre, are archival and acid free. You do not need this for practice. You can use a tree pulp type paper. For example: Strathmore makes 3 grades of paper - 300 series, 400 and 500 series. you can see where this is going. The 300 and 400 series is not a cotton based paper, and not archival, it is acid free, but 500 is. So, a paper I highly recommend for sketches or practice is the Strathmore Multi-media brown cover with thistle drawing, or the Strathmore Drawing 300 series, yellow cover with graphite of rope and electric wire. The 400 multi-media is a bit thicker, and a bit smoother. both would work well for practice, and you won’t feel like you need to be perfect all the time because the price is better. Fabriano has the paper called Bristol+ smooth, and nice to work on as well. Hope this helps, let me know how it goes. Cheers
Thank you a 1000 times! That’s exactly the information I needed! I received a large set of Polychromos as a gift and now I can’t wait to get started. Thanks again 🌸
Colored Pencil art is a work of patience... watching how long it takes an artist to actually create something good with CP's makes me realize the medium is not for me. I can create 2-3 drawings and paintings using watercolors and ink than I can with CP's.... I envy those that have the patience and skill to produce good art with these....
Thank you soo much maam...love from India

Me: "I can't wait to get a set of luminance!". Life: "We'll see." 😂
Ikr? 😂 (although it’s Faber Castell polychrome for me).
@AuntieTrichome we shall get there
I just found your channel and I'm so glad I did I'm just starting with color pencils my question is can you buy an individual pencil if your constantly use that one color or do you have to buy a whole set just to get that color pencil thank you
@@jeannewarrick1106 Hello, depending on your pencil brand, the professional coloured pencils are sold as individual pencils. Sets such as Prismacolor, Polychromos, Luminance, Lightfast, Pablo, Holbein and others all sell their pencils individually. Check out art stores such as Dick Blick, Jerry’s Artorama, or in Canada, Delta Art, Kings Framing and Art. In Europe Jackson’s art supply and in Africa, Asia and India I am not sure of the art store names. Cheers
@@Drawingwithcolour thank you for getting back with me so quickly I will look into it thanks again

Love the techniques you demonstrate in this video! I need to give my pencils another go. I've been looking for a circle template such as the one shown, but haven't found it in the local craft stores, would you kindly tell me where I can purchase it or one like it? Thank you.
Thanks for the comment and the kind words. That circle template, usually found in art stores in drafting departments, online also, when searching search drafting equipment, circle templates. Hope that helps, cheers
@@Drawingwithcolour I found it, thank you so much!
Mmm, did you forget to mention the type/weight of paper. That is so important to. Lovely techniques
Hello and thank you for the comment. I actually have the paper in the description box, it is Stonehenge White, it only comes in one GSM/weight. Cheers
@@Drawingwithcolour oops, so sorry I must have missed it. Thanks for replying

Beautiful colouring!
What is stroke 1 and 2? Is it the pressure?
Could it be possible to list the exact luminance pencils you use to try to match the best possible to the image ?
Thank you for the comment. Cheers
What paper would you recommend for color pencil drawings?
What kind of paper do you use? I keep adding color but after a certain point it doesn’t look any different of a color
I have always liked graphite and colored pencils but how do you know what colors you need to use to build up to your layers to reach your desired results? I watched your video of the donut and I would never have thought to use the colors you did for the donut’s end result.
Thanks so much for connecting, for sure it can be hard, LOL maybe I need to do a video on how to choose colours! What I always do is start at the lowest common denominator, the cooked dough is golden brown, the lightest part of the cooked dough is almost white, more cool cream colour, and then I carefully look everywhere on my subject for hints of other colours, reds, browns, warm and cool colours. The icing the same, start lightest, use the colour wheel to guide you and there you go. Keep looking carefully at your subjects and go from there. Keep an eye open for future colour choice video. Cheers
@@Drawingwithcolour thank you so much for your quick reply and your tips! I really appreciate it and will definitely try them out! I will keep my eye out for your future videos too!
I have the full set of Luminance, but I don’t see a link that says which colors you are using. In the video, it says there is a link in the description box, but the only link is to the Caran D’Ache website or your website. It would be helpful to know which ones you are specifically using. I’m a portrait artist, but I’m recovering from a rough surgery and it’s a long recovery, so I thought I’d use colored pencils since they won’t make a mess I’m in no position to deal with. But I’m trying to understand the medium as it is quite different than what I am used to.
Thank you for your wonderful tutorials!
I found her about 3, maybe 4 months ago, at the most. I don’t remember which of the videos it was that I saw, but in one of them, she explained that she doesn’t actually give the name of the colors, more or less because she knows that some will want to follow and do what she is doing and won’t have the same pencils or maybe they have a set, but not the same colors. That is why she gives a palette towards the begin (in this case at the 1:19 mark). She recommends just holding pencils up to the palette she gives and choose the closest pencils each one has to those colors. I realize that isn’t what you really want, but that is how she personally does it. Hopefully, it helps at least to a degree.
I can’t find the color chart in the description

amazing, new fiend ❤️😍😍😍😍
Thank you, cheers
Absolutely amazing!! Thank you so much. But I'm curious why you used AI for the a couple of images? I just thought it was funny since it's an art tutorial video (/gen question. I absolutely don't mean it in a rude way). Either way, amazing work and super helpful! You have earned a sub!
AI images will be used to help me demo something when I can’t find it through royalty free sources. Cheers and thanks for subscribing.
So could you say basically: textures are dark to light but smooth surfaces are light to dark? I've been trying to figure this out for a while ^^;
Hmmm, not necessarily. If a subject is smooth with little texture and is dark I’ll start from dark to light, and the opposite for a light subject. I will however, block in darks to light on a textured subject such as branches on trees, but for fur babies of any kind, depending on if the subject is dark or light again and block in the same as a smooth subject for under drawing, base layers. But this is my preference. cheers
❤
Thank you, cheers
So beautiful but Time consuming. Pastel is better for me,I am too lazy👍💐🌺💕
I understand totally, I’ve worked a lot with pastels and they don’t require this type of layering. LOL. Too funny. Cheers
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but every time I add the second color for the shading sphere, there's a harsh transition even though I'm using a feather-light touch. I can still see the page tooth through the colors, even after I add a few more layers, so I'm fairly certain I'm not pressing too hard.
Hmmm, weird, I’m sure you’re using the right technique, could it be your paper? What kind of pencil are you using?
@@Drawingwithcolour I'm using Prismacolor and UCreate acid free premium drawing paper.
@@MetisLeigh427 Hello, I think it’s your paper and pencils. UCreate paper is not a high end drawing paper and the prismacolors, although a nice pencil is not the best pencil. I know this for sure, sometimes we can only work with what we have, your paper is not thick/heavy and I suspect does not have enough tooth on it. If this is the only paper you have, keep working with it, but you’ll have to go a lot lighter with your pressure - even 2 layers on that paper can be a problem. If you would like better results, and if you do have a bit of a small budget, instead opt for a better paper such as Legion Stonehenge White, green cover. You will get far fewer sheets of paper, but they will be thicker, more tooth that can take layers better and is one of the top papers for coloured pencil drawing. There are others, but that one is a good start, you can find it in most art stores and through amazon, go with a smaller paper pad. You’ll see you can layer better. Also, the prismacolor pencils which I have used for years - can be very very waxy. So keep your light hand as you are doing - just barely touch the paper, and keep your pencil sharp to get the colour into the tooth. 3 Things for coloured pencil success, good quality paper, a good pencil - again if you have a tiny budget go with Polychromos from Faber Castell, and a good pencil sharpener, such as M&R and or KUM. Good luck. cheers
@@Drawingwithcolour I had a feeling the paper may be the issue. I did try a few things and I found that I get much better results if I go over the base layer a few times to even out the pencil strokes. Up and down, left and right, and then diagonal. I know I have to be really careful to not make the base layer too thick and go as lightly as possible, but I am seeing better results. Not quite where I want it to be, so I'll try the paper you suggested and see how it works out. Thank you for taking the time to reply to me. I really appreciate it!
I consider myself to be decent at layering and adequate at shading. Often in combination. And l do realize l may have an inflated opinion. But one thing a lot of people who work with color pencils are doing is not art. I know it. You know it. We all know it. I certainly do not consider myself an artist. And one thing we commonly deal with at this level is the paper. If the paper you are using lacks sufficient tooth layering becones almost impossible. Another issue is cheap quality pencils with low pigment levels. These require excessive pressure to lay down any color density which fills the tooth of the paper quickly.
I am to the point i want to try pastel pencils in combination with artist grade olored pencils. And blending mediums.
Sounds fun. Cheers
Layers
Yes, many layers. Cheers
Why have the subtextvright over where you are working?!
