You guys are the dogs balls! I find myself watching and enjoying your clips over and over. Great playing too. Thanks for all your efforts, and keep it up!! Cheers
You have to love what these guys are doing. It helps young guitar players like me when you see people who show you what kind of products are out there. Thanks chappers and lee for all of the inspiration you guys have had on my guitar journey.
Cheers Buddy - I must admit to putting in an extra few hours of practice before this shoot as I knew we had so many cool toys to play with!!
@saadmemon90 Ha ha yeah... I was very tired, last shoot of the two days and after this I had a rehearsal :\m/
Glad you like it - I'm not even really sure where I picked it up from. I think it comes from being a fairly limited player, so I try to compensate by making what I can play sound really soulful. I've always loved players that can get one stellar note (like Paul Kossoff), rather than lots of notes & no feel.
They sort of brushed off the different method used for weight relief between these two guitars, but the 2012 model uses what Gibson calls " modern weight relief", which is basically 10 conical shaped cavities placed around the body of the guitar, as opposed to nine round holes concentrated near the bottom side of the body. I have the 2012, the sound is far woodier, more resonant.
This is such a good video Lee played so well in the video it had me mesmerized.
Another Great, Informative video. You Guys do Superb job displaying the guitars differences & nuances. It's always Fun to watch you both in action. Thank You
At this time I couldn't find any sound example in a german website. But you have done exact this what I'm looking for. Now I'm more sure and I will buy in the next two or three month one of the gibson les paul standard 2012.
Thanks a lot again and cheers from Berlin, Germany.
Bloody eck! Chappers that intro solo was amazing and such tone.
Cheers dude :-)
The Blackstar demo steals the show. The "squeaking" is to die for.
Yeah, the Premium Plus has a flame maple top too as opposed to the solid colour standards which have regular plain maple tops. That's pretty much what justifies the price difference
I never knew that the intonation on the G string was a common problem. I always thought something was wrong with my specific Les Paul. Thanks guys. Great playing.
I could listen to you guys play all day long.
Corian is an acrylic plastic product from Dupont. Lots of solid surface counter tops are made from Corian. Versatile stuff. I've seen guitar bodies made out of it.
HAHAHAHAHA!! Captain's face at 14:04 when THE chappers hits the lick!!
Damn, I love the phrasing that Rob plays at the start of the video
I have a Les Paul Traditional and one of the reason why I got it was because of the 60's Slim neck, it was like putting on a good pair of shoes that fit well :)
I watched this and went on operation "Gibson" code for dads going to buy another guitar! Picked my girls up from work/college (wife in bed after night shift as nurse) waited while she went to sleep. Off to Guitar shop. Sneaked it home and into back room with other Guitars. WOW what a player its fantastic!
That blow switch is so useful. Angus young would love that because he always turns his volume knob down for rhythm and cranks it for leads. With that it would just be pull and shred
Am I the only one that watches these videos with no intention of buying one, just enjoying two amazing players and interesting conversations
I got to play one of these today, and I was totally blown away. I'm a Charvel guy, and this neck was VERY Charvel like. Felt amazing. And sound... Wow. For my ears, and ability, this guitar is a game changer for Gibson. I would not consider buying one of these before; but now, I will buy the first trans black that show up in the local shop that I buy from.
If you like the Les Paul Standard just the way it was, then buy a Traditional, but if you like the sort of switching that PRS offer, then the Les Paul Standard 2012 is for you. No one is right or wrong, its just a case a of personal preference.
I'm with you on that. I'm actually a bass player but enjoy watching these guys discuss 6 strings.
@gtu734 You're slightly incorrect. In this Standard, it's a coil Split, though it is incorrectly labelled (by Gibson) as a coil tap. A Coil Split shunts one coil, leaving you with a "single coil". A coil tap still uses both coils, but it cuts out a portion of the windings, or "taps" the coil. There's a difference.
At first I was watching these guys becuase I was interested in info on Blackstar amps. But I have spent so much time watching them now they are like old friends! lol I am in Canada and I truely enjoy these guys and the info they provide! If I can ever make it to England I am going to Andertons for sure!!!
You guys are so much fun to watch, keep up the great work! \m/ Cheers
Oh, so nice to see through that window to past
Can't wait for you guys to demo the new 2012 strats n teles!
The bypass switch description is on this video is misleading. When activated it doesn't mean just bridge humbucker direct to output regardless of all other knob settings. The bridge pickup coil tap still kicks in if activated whilst bypass is also activated. So if you want humbucker/direct sound you have to ensure the bridge volume knob is pushed in as well.
Cap'n has so much feel in his playing that it gives me goosebumps when he just bends... amazing.
A much needed improvement over the Traditional Pro (which is quite heavy but with coil taps) - - add in a weight relieved body, out of phase and direct out and voila, you have a winner. Thanks for a great review - as always!
So it's a hyped up Traditional pro. I do like the chambered bodies. I personally like a heavy paul but the tone that is achieved with chambering is sweet. It adds sort of an acoustical tone to it. Rock on!
Agreed - I normally like stuff from the heavier end of the spectrum, but I could just chill to an album by these two for days
Love the blues groove Chappers and the Cap'n are getting into the recent videos.
@prh654321 Thanks mate, SVR split up... although Lee and I will definitely bring something out at some point :-)
The Andertons videos helped me to choose the '12 Les Paul and I couldnt be happier. It is an amazing playing, feeling, and sounding guitar. The tonal options are incredible. You get the classic Les Paul tone and sustain with the added coil taps, and the out of phase tone is sweet. I think the new weight relief of the '12 is an improvement over the chambers of the 08 as it leaves allot more wood mass and overall a more substantial feel w/out being too heavy. Mine weighs 9.25lb.
Actually, after owning the 08 Standard for a few years now, I've surprisingly grown to like the input jack. I thought I would hate it at first, but it's a very solid sturdy connection without any wobble to it. And I've also leanred to unplug it pretty easily on the fly. Like most players, I wrap my cord around the back straplock, so ripping it out at a live gig was never an issue for me. I think the 'stepping on cable' concept is flawed, but the neutric jack is rock solid and I like it.
They both had Standards. The Traditional is introduced and explained at 18:00.
Love your videos. I have my coffee in the morning and watch your reviews.. Keep them coming from the UK. You can borrow our blues cause you guys treat it right. Leon From the Mississippi Delta King Biscuit Time Show....
I'd also like to mention that the "compound radius" has nothing to do with neck width. It represents the curvature of the fretboard. Basically, if you were to transpose the curvature of the fretboard to a full circle, the "radius" of that circle is the radius of the fretboard. It's 10" at the 1st fret, which is fairly flat but still has a curve to make chording easier, while the 16" radius up at the 12th fret is much flatter, making it easier to bend notes without "fretting out".
Something neat would be a blues album from Chappers and Lee. Now that would be an album I'd be listening to in the car every day, or in the house for hours.
Cheers mate, working on my chops so that Phil doesn't destroy me... ;-)
I own a 2008 les paul, after trying many many 2012's 2008's and traditionals, and you really CANNOT get the difference from any video, i watched this before i went to play and thought the 2012 was the guitar for me, but in reality (for me) it was NOTHING on the raw power and neck of the 2008 even then, I had to play about 10 2008's before i found the perfect guitar.. and i couldn't be happier with the result... you have to PLAY these guitars, they really are something special, and very personal.
Great playing and excellent demo guys !!!
AAA Maple is the top grade of Maple with the most finely detailed grain. Usually used for tops on uber high end guitars or as an option on the better models. It ain't cheap by any means.
yes!! ive been waiting for this one for ages!!!
Love the new Gibson. What I would have loved to have seen is a NanoMag option.I like the Blow Switch but I don't use that feature a lot on my Yamaha.I use much like an effect pedal but only once in awhile.Another great video.!!
I bought the vintage sun burst satin top traditional on saturday, I actually went to the shop with the intention of buying the new standard but the finish on the mahogany is gorgeous so I changed my mind and got the traditional, so glad I did!!!!
Beautiful playing!
Love the versatility. Always enjoy Rob & The Captain demos. Need to go try some guitars now. I like the Gibson 60's neck profile over the 50's. Never tried the asymmetrical or the new compound radius on the 2012 standard. But there are several Les Paul models now with coil taps.
Captain Lee should wear one of those blue headscarfs too so they would have matching heads! It's very becoming.
Lee has one of the nicest vibrato techniques I`ve heard.
that red satin one looks beautiful
And that is why we have such a beautiful range of guitars to fit everyone's taste
Hi Rob, I wondered if in the future you will be doing some B.C. Rich reviews for Andertons, as I mainly see Fender, Gibson and ESP reviews which are great, but doing some reviews such as B.C. Rich would come as a nice surprise to me. All the Best...
Dan
Strats use alder, don't use any binding and produces a thin sound.
Take the "Telebration" series they have similiar spec to a Les Paul and the prices are £1300-£1600!
it would be so sick if these guys tabbed out their demos! thumbs up you think so too!
The captain has a very nice smooth vibrato, and nice phrasing.
Way To Go! Great Les Paul playing!
I love the les paul clean tone, but you have to work with the tone and volume knobs and combine it with an amp that works with it.
I bought a Les paul traditional recently (supposedly in honey burst but i think it's the new finish they call caramel burst) and I'm so glad i did, the big neck, flame top and old school les paul tones are unbeatable. The 2012 standard was very very nice to play, but it just didn't sound like a thick and chunky les paul to me and i only found the phase switch pot useful.
WHY AM I ONLY SEEING THIS NOW!!!! Sorry for the caps lock abuse but this is excellent and damn I want a new Standard.
Yea, I know. Never said that. When they are sitting and playing the demo, they both have standards, sir. Rob w/ the 2012, Lee w/ the 2008. It is written on the truss cover of both guitars. When they show the shots of the two stocks they are showing the two 2012s. Not the 2008 Std which Lee is playing. The only LP Traditional is shown at around 18:00 where the differences are explained. Where else do you see Lee use a Tradtl? Why would they compare a '08 Trd to a '12 Std. Read the video title.
Ok, thank you for clearing that up for me.Have a nice day.
Are you guys planning on doing a feature on the Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus any time soon? I keep hearing good things about them but it'd be nice to get an opinion from you two aswell. Cheers, keep up the good work!
I really like the 2008s better than the 2012s. The guitars sound almost the same, but I like the finishes on the 2008s better and I love the chrome tulip tuners.
That is not really what i would call a "tuning" issue generally, it is an intonation issue that is not specific to Les Pauls. All guitars have that and it is because the G string was originally meant to be wound rather than plain like your B and high E. You can fix it by changing your nut, but almost any production guitar will have this issue with a stock nut...
Good stuff guys. Great playing.
Thicker necks ( which are made of the same wood) add stability ,physical robustness and natural sustain and depth/ richness of tone when compared to skinny necks made from the same wood and which are joined to the guitar body in the same way .These things would certainly be regarded as being factual in as far as such considerations can be agreed upon amongst the vast majority of experienced guitarists .
Great job lads as always!
@zillathegorilla I think you'll find that the blow switch concept was invented years before Suhr was conceived :-)
Have you played one? I have a 1997 Les Paul Classic, and a 2012 Les Paul Classic Plus, and I can't get enough of the 60's slim taper profile neck. They just feel so good. Best neck I've ever had my hand wrapped around... besides my ex-wife's!
I agree, I also don't see the thing with noiseless pups on starts and tele's. takes away from the tone in my opinion. you obviously dot want a situation where the noise overpowers the sound output but gimme some vintage pups any day.
Studio models always have the same basic hardware as Standards - difference is the quality of the woods used, bling parts, etc...basically same sound just aesthetically different.
That 2012 model Gibson sounds fucking lush with that Blackstar.
I have a Gibson Les Paul Standard 2008 and it's awesome!
I bought the 2012 vintage sunburst traditional yesterday, i can't put it down it is gorgeous! would recommend to anyone !
I got one of em' - 2012 for me, miles away in front. Where do I begin......Comment at 2:46 - most definitely agreed, I too have never liked the baseball-bat neck prior to 2012 issue. Well worth the money now - more familiar feel. Course - amps and stomps effect it all - eh? Play........one.
I just got the Les Paul Traditional Mahogany and it rocks.
Many other companies have been known for making the same mistake. I saw the same mistake on a Schecter Hellraiser when I was in my local shop. I sighed and put if back on the shelf.
WOW! I love the new standard but man! That finish on the mahogany traditional is unreal!
"This is why the Les Paul will always be The Daddy. Cuz' it just rocks!!!"
Like the look of that traditional, although I prefer the mahogany and maple combo on a les paul.
Never wanted to buy a gibson, ever since i tried a bunch at a guitarstore and at my friends house (he has like 6 gibsons) then i got my hands on a epi les paul blackback that was completely modified with pots, pickups, hardware and wiring, plays much better and imo, sounds better than any gibson i ever tried :P
I love watching Lee's face when Chapper's plays
what a great way to keep you up :P
I love the way Lee is _still_ amazed by Chappers' playing :-)
Thanks a lot for the info ,that makes sense to me ! All the best.
The only thing I dislike about the new Standards is that the tobacco burst has a smaller dark area around the neck pickup, unlike for example the Slash signature.
Chappers and lee are great, when im bored i always come watch their videos!! their awesome ROCK ON \m/
I have, and they are really nice guitars as well. Really well balanced and the neck on the handful that I've played have felt really good. Slightly more chunky than the '60's slim taper profile, but still really, really nice. One thing I don't care for on the PRS guitars I've played are the pickups. But, I may be the only person alive who loves the Gibson 500T.
good way to start the day
I am a very traditional kind of player, was going for a standard traditional, but really, The 2012 standards are brilliant and typical LES PAUL sounds and playability.
Bought one immediately as soon as i tried it.
"Amazing" is the word.
I spent some time on one of these a few days ago. the radius is fine, though I prefer a straight 12 inch radius) but the neck is very thin on the treble side...reminded me of something Ibanez would do. I can't say I liked it.
The split positions are only OK in person, cutting a 7-9K humbucker in half gives you a 4K or so single....very, very weak. I would likely replace the pickups with something more powerful if good single coil tones were critical on my guitar.
the coil tapping reminds me of the 2006 fender highway one, except fender achieved the sound by using a reverse wound central single coil pickup, so when the switch was in 2nd or 4th position the pickups acted like humbuckers.. kinda like approaching the same tone from a different angle...funny how guitars have changed over time :) great overview though guys :)
Need to give Lee more of a chance playing some of the solos. He looked ready to go at the start of the video xD
You could use non Gibson pickups, obviously the sound could be alot different, what Gibson have done with the bridge pickup is wind it more on 1 spool than the other to produce a more P90 sound when tapped, but sound normal when both coils are engaged. (according to the german show review)
Best tone of all was right at the end when Lee was playing through the Lovepedal.Beats all that fancy switcherooney of the new model.
The Captain wins this one - amazing tone on first run of the 2008 Les Paul Standard and nice licks
