An Exceptional January 1969 Les Paul Standard GoldTop With P-90s.
This January 1969 Les Paul Standard weighs 9.40 lbs. and has very fat nut width of just over 1 11/16 inches and a standard Gibson scale length of 24 3/4 inches. Solid one-piece mahogany body with single cream binding and maple top with gold finish. One-piece mahogany neck with a huge profile, the early long tenon neck joint but with the wider headstock. Rosewood fretboard with 22 original jumbo frets and inlaid pearl trapezoid position markers. Headstock with inlaid pearl "Gibson" logo and gold silk-screened "Les Paul Model." Individual Kluson Deluxe 'double-line' tuners with double-ring Keystone plastic buttons and "D-169400 / Patent No." stamped inside. Serial number "540878" stamped into the back of the headstock. Single-layer black plastic truss-rod cover with two screws. Two P-90 pickups with really hot outputs of 7.74k and 8.11k. Cream plastic pickguard. Four controls (two volume, two tone) on lower treble bout plus three-way selector switch on upper bass bout. Gold plastic bell-shaped knobs with metal tops. Gibson Tune-O-Matic retainer bridge with metal saddles and separate stud tailpiece. The pots are stamped: "137 6850" (CTS last week of December 1968) and the two capacitors are the black cylindrical Sprague "Black Beauty" type. This is one of the earliest 68/69 GoldTops with a typical '59 Les Paul neck that is to die for! There are two small surface marks on the top just to the treble-side of the lower strap-pin and a few small 'dings'/marks on the edges. Overall this wonderful forty-two year old Les Paul Standard is in exceptionally fine condition (9.00) condition. Complete with the original Gibson 22 page hang-tag booklet. Housed in the original Gibson three-latch black rectangular (rounded corners) hardshell case with pale orange plush lining (9.00).
Man, I've never seen anyone who can play both guitar parts to "Acrobat" on the same guitar at the same time. That's incredible! I'm nearly sure that higher part is dubbed in on the original.
Miss him loooooadz
I literally come back to this video on a regular basis for this sole reason. I just realized tho it’s because he had the Guitar in drop C sharp as opposed to C sharp standard like the original. So it’s easier to play the octaves. Still very cool and impressive. I love phil
Yeah I learned how to play both parts to the song by watching his hands in this video, it's actually how I discovered the song
He started playing the riff and I thought
"Fuck me that is fuuuuuuucking sick"
So happy and grateful to Phil x whenever I play thos riff
And I think you're right it sounds like an over dub in the studio track
I love this man’s guitar playing and vibe
"lets use it before it dies", lol, .... Phil, guitar & p-90 Rock!. ..... timeless
was this in 2012? Really? man how times flies. I always loved Phill, and sometimes, a guy like me just want to listen to Phill play an awesome Les Paul.
oh and...''sounds like a 45 played at 33...'' the internet thinks:....crikets....cricket sounds....crickets sound....
like 4% of the audience has an idea of what Phill is talking about.
Records kids!...Records!...
Love ya Phill, hope all is well.
yeah what was he talking about there? :D 45 played at 3?
oh he's talking about records, never mind!
Heh heh, 2024 here…😉
This guy is amazing. It's amazing how well he plays. He kids a lot and you might not think he's gonna break into songs like he does, but when he does I'm impressed. How about you?
I can really appreciate Phil's ability to sing and play Unchained.
Thank you Phil, for making my day....again. No matter how shyte things go at work, whenever I watch one of your videos I'm back on track and ready to rock! Greetings from SA.
P90's! What cleans! what growl! what versatility! Why aren't they more popular than standard singles and humbuckers? Hail a P90 revolution!
You Phil. Loved the Guess Who riffin. I remember learning that stuff in the basement back in 1973 along with Nashville Sneakers.
The perfect way to start the Weekend? Watching Phil X! Awesome every week
This is the second version with the wider headstock, the first model in 68 had the normal Les Paul shape but shallower headstock angle. this one has that too, gotta say it sounds sweet.
When I'm 40 I want to enjoy life just like this guy: Like a 18 yrs old guy with a new guitar.
Greatest Phil X vid in a long time. Dig that heavy tone from the Les Paul and the Evil Robot.
This was how i get to know about Phil X back in those days still a fan
Hes one of the most enterteining guys ever and a beast of guitar player
Phil, I get into a great mood listening to you and your crazy shit. It's dialed in. You rocked that gold top in drop C. Never seice to amaze me with your riffs and selection of songs. Take care until next time
I love you're videos and adore Phil watched for over a year now, but i miss the old camera angle i got so use to i lol can we have it back pleasseee rock on guys
yo man, you gotta remember when we shoot a vid, we shoot 8-10 in a day. that means vids for 8-10 weeks meaning nothing's going to change in 8-10 weeks so have a little patience. also.... why we can't turn up my lavalier mic when i'm singing is 'cause the ER was so loud, it got recorded onto that mic so when my voice got turned up so did the not so pleasant lavalier recording of the ER 4 feet away. all this will be resolved for the next batch probably in 4 weeks. thanks for all the comments.
Nice to see u again in the shop!
AWESOME! PHIL JUST KEEPS GETTIN' BETTER. THAT GUIT SOUNDS AMAZING.
I honestly believe this is one of the best sounding guitars I've ever heard from frettedamericana
P-90's don't get enough love
Thanks for 'Neon Kinghts' - I still have my original 45 of this song!
First: This guitar sounds just amazing, I'm not a fan of P-90s, but these sound awesome
Second: Every time I watch one of Phils videos I get a huge urge for playing, it's just that his energy and playing is really inspiring.
And now I find myself in a dilemma, study for tests or rock out? I think I'll go with the second :D
I always come prepared and watch while I play. :)
Hell yeah! Thanks for the request Phil!
slick edit at 11:56! loved all the Sabbath stuff and Unchained was awesome too! Phil was really feeling it on this day!
This guitar sounds so awesome great video
Congrats on 25 MILLION VIEWS!
This is my favorite guitar i think, out of all the fretted americana vidoes! Such an awesome sound from the amp and P-90s :P
Sounds AMAZING!!!
This was the best review yet! That les sounds killer! Phil is the best!
Best sounding Fretted Americana demo to date!
The tone is so fat, yet it's still very crunchy.
Loving the tunes too! Picked up my guitar and started playing some Sabbath myself.
If you're asking about what he plays around the 5 minute mark it's "A national acrobat" by Black Sabbath.
This is such a great video thanks Phil break on through man
makes my day every time a video is uploaded! great video - phil you fucking rock!!
Miss you so much 💔🙁🙁🙁💔😜
The Sabbath riff sounds so good. Those p90's truly rock!!
Phil, you make my day better, thanks, that Neon Knights was *bark* perfect!
@rlowe97 The deluxe started in 69 the p90 standard was stopped in 70 and in 71 Gibson released a 54 reissue called the standard 58
This is probably my favourite phil X video together with the Gretsch acoustic video!
In 1980, I purchased one of these. 1 piece mahogany back, chunky 1 piece mahogany neck. The finish on the face had been removed and left natural. The saddles were nylon. The machines had been swapped out for an old set of grovers. It was my first les paul. I paid the full asking price of $250.00. The only part of it that I still have is the lightweight tailpiece, that I now have on my 1973 goldtop deluxe.
+telecasterbear why'd you sell it?
+GreekGuru74 I was paying off bills and getting ready to buy our first house. the house is now paid for, and I have a very nice 73 gold top.
Simply the best Phil X Video Yet! Love the Sabbath and the Van Halen! I now have a new love tor the drop C Sharp! Keep rockin' Phil! Your the bestest!:)
Wait .. the B String trick at 7.20 ? I had no clue ... learned something new today. Thanks Phil.
my PHIL PHIX lovin every minute of it...come to Louisiana man!!!!!
This is one of the best fretted americana videos ever. Do more videos like this, and by that I mean rock harder, do more heavy stuff! You guys have been neglecting that part of rock music in your last videos. I do wanna hear Sabbath on Fender Mustang, just because I'm interested in how it would sound like :D... Anyway, I love you guys, rock on \m/
Best FA vid in ages!!!!
i just noticed it too, the other angle is better, you get to see more, it makes phil look cooler as you can see him properly rockin out, instead of just like seein the guitar and his face lol, and then theres the way the light catches the guitar, it was so much better :)
Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. I've seen it on the Fretted Americana website. A really crazy piece of history! They definitely SHOULD do a video of that.
Dude, those P-90s are hot!!
What a great way to start my friday! :)
Around 11:30 is Neon Knights by Slack Babbath
Those that pick up a guitar and try to copy Phil playing Sabbath 'National Acrobat' will realise the trickiness of the unequal 2-guitar-part-harmony-interval-spacing - Top-Phil-X-Respect! :D
Amazing sound
i love it that i laugh my arse off and watch a decent guitar review at the same time
Hey Fretted Americana, can you please do the Billy Bo and some ZZ Top? Thanks anyway for the videos.
These days I tend to listen to Sabbath less than I used to because I get my fill with these videos
That's one of the best sounding guitars i've heard.
He is really a good entertainer and guitarist.
his tone... i want it.. i want it now!!!!
PD: could be really cool if when phil plays a song you put the title and the performer in the description, in that way you won't get so many answer for the name of the songs
Might be the greatest guitar I've ever heard.
hey phill next time you show a guitar can you slow down that awsome swamp riff at like 2 and a half minuites thanks. love these videos
VH change sounded soo good with out flange effect
mr x
as always , very entertaining !
regards,
against the grain
You're a little nuts but enjoy your videos... Keep up your good sense of humor.. and rock on!!
Martin Garcia looks like adhd to me, at least that's my excuse and we're mentally alike. not fingerly...dangit.
The best lp sound Ive ever heard
It's Octave day!
ocTAVE
7:37 Van Halen - Unchained
awwwwwwwsome phill, you make me wanna learn guitar!!!!!!!
Neon Knights!!!! I figured the lyrics somehow through the awesome tone :D hahaha
Andrew was pointing out that F and E# are the same thing (enharmonic). I don't think he was speaking of their FUNCTION. The OP asked how to tune down to drop C#, to which robolew correctly replied to tune down a half step/tone. Gibbs apparently had a problem calling it a half tone instead of half step. I merely pointed out the two terms are interchangeable. The only syntax mistake robolew made was he should have said to tune the low string down an ADDITIONAL whole step to C#.
There is only one Phil X...just great! Phil smokes this '69 LP GT...very nice!
Phil rocks my socks! What is that song at the very beginning?
Phil, what is the BEST guitar you've ever played, in your opinion?
My day is really kickass now!
thanks for the Neon Knights moment! I needed that!
... Oh man... the guitar is sick..!!
Every day is octave day for Phil.
I think this the best sounding guitar they did!
Have to agree. Always come back to this video.
Drop c# is the tune I use for most of my songs... and I´m happy phil plays it :D
what's the riff at 2:50? thanks! always discovering new songs with Phil.
Bravo....super kick-ass!
Do some more basses! I'd be down for that!
i often dig songs played by phil x more than the original, same here
aww man i wanted to join phil at camp rock but i'm to old. this guitar is so HAM
what an awesome way to end my thursday!
Hey there's a Gold explorer on your website could you do a review of it? or the natural 3 piece top Les Paul both of those guitars look amazing and frankly I will own one of them someday so I would love you to do a review :L
phil. please do the les paul special 2!
When he went to the Evil Robot, I dropped my phone and had to catch my breath! No lie! NEED THAT TONE! O>O
Mr. X, two part question here; Why are you so awesome, and is it even possible to be more awesome than you already are? (Just a thought, if it is possible, I'm sure playing some Steve Miller or The Doors in the next batch would make it so :) )
you should mic. you vocals cuz your and AMAZING vocalist with AMAZING range. seriously do it, i wanna hear that piercing rock voice of yours!
Aaaahhhh....January 1969........pretty historic month........Beatles fans will know
izzat a billy bo Gretsch in the back on the bottom on Philex's left? could you do that one what ever it is?
Gosh. He nailed that EVH tone.
This is a seriously goood guitar, sounds amazing! Phil on eXtra fire!
That's a hell of guitar for its price. It's beating some Standards. Really, really awesome guitar. Visit the oficial website and look at the comments and rating. Are you begginer?
Could you guys do the unreversed firebird? Please and thank you
Hi, what mic do you guys use to capture the amp sound?
It sounds really organic (specially when clean) for a UA-cam video. That with Phil's mic capturing his hard picking makes the recording sound really amazing.
Cheers!
I know but soon or later they're going to review all the vintage guitars in this world!!!
I saw some videos that they were not vintage guitars lately.
Yo man
A couple of months ago I asked if you could do the Beat it solo.. You guys said it would be a awesome.. but still nothing?
But still have a kickass day!
