    Hey, really nice tutorial. It's also very clear, so it'll help lots of people.
    However, as other people said, it's quite inaccurate. There basically 3 errors in this tutorial, and 2 of these errors have been rapidly noticed by the community, but only few people noticed the last:
    1 - You're not dealing Lv3 Charged. In order to have a Lv3 Charged, you have to release X just when you see that sort of red aura around you "explodes". If done correctly, you should hear a metallic sound, like the one you can hear while doing a Lv3 Super Charged or a Lv3 Super Swipe.
    2 - You can go for a Slap (and then a Super Charge) even after dealing a Uncharged/Charged Vertical Slash, just pressing X again. This is quite important, because allows you to perform an extremely powerful combo on a captured/KO monster:
    *Lv3 Charged - Slap - Lv3 Super Charged - Lv3 Super Swipe.*
    It deals devastating damage, but it takes a very long time, so you usually use it only on enemies who can't move.
    3 - You didn't talk about the extremely important Roll-End attacks: basically, after a roll, you can quickly perorm an attack. This allows you to restart a combo that you didn't want to interrupt, or allows you to reach powerful moves in fewer seconds.
    * 3a - After a Straight Roll (the normal Roll you perform with Sheated or Unsheated sword), if you have your sword Unsheated, you can rapidly perform a Slap pressing X. this is an extremely important move, because it allows you to go for a Super Charged veeeeery quickly. Also, even is slap doesn't really inflict tons of damage, you can drain some extra HPs while the monster is going to die and is changing area: you can just follow him, repeatedly rolling toward him and slapping his leg or tail (*Roll - Slap - Roll - Slap...*).
    * 3b - After a Side Roll (the Roll you perform when you have just used an attack, if you move the Stick Rightwards/Leftwards/Downwards while pressing B), pressing X you can rapidly perform a Swipe pressing X (pay attention: usually, Swipe's button is A, but you need to press X after the Side Roll in order to quickly use it). Even if this is maybe not important as the Quick Slap, it allows you to restart an interrupted combo ( *[Everything that does not finish with Super Swipe] - Side Roll - Quick Swipe - [Everything you want]* ), and it also brings you to a Super Charged.
    With this message, tutorial should be complete. Nice work anyway, i still haven't found (even written!) a complete tutorial for MH4U GreatSword.

    The "level 3" charges you are demonstrating are only level 2. When you first start glowing yellow, you are UNcharged and will do the same amount of damage as a regular 'x', just with a delay. Every time you flash red, it's one level of charge. You only waited for 2 red flashes, thus you only used level 2 charges. It might also behoove you to talk about the attacks you can do at the end of a roll, especially using 'x' after a forward roll, as it can extend the distance you travel by a small amount. It also gives the greatsword a small amount of close combat ability that it previously lacked.

      Charged Slash
      Charged Slashes will increase in power the longer you charge your attack, but wait too long and it'll become weaker. When you see a large flash of light, release the button for maximum damage.

    The jump slash is extremely powerful. A good tip for any greatsworder, is to make use of every ledge in the area. The jump slash is more powerful than your level one draw swing. So in areas that are loaded with ledges, you can deal serious damage extremely fast. There have been numerous occasions where I was able to stop a charging gravios in its tracks with just a single jump slash. Just keep in mind that it's risky as it leaves you open if you mess up. And getting hit mid air can happen if you use it carelessly.

    Did you know that you can do the super charge after doing the slap attack, after a regular/charged X attack? So if you charge X, press X again to slap, and the back and X again to do the super charge.
    My point is that you dont have to press A at all in the combo :D
    Just wanted to share because you didnt mention that combo in the video :)

    • @CiuccioeCorraz
      @CiuccioeCorraz 9 років тому +1

      You're right, man. It's quite an important thing because you need to do that in order to do the most powerful GreatSword combo (usually done on trapped/KO enemies):
      Level 3 Charge - Slap - Level 3 Super Charge - Level 3 Super Swipe
      Nice and very noob-friendly tutorial, but not extremely accurate.

  • @MrRayhonda
    @MrRayhonda 9 років тому +4

    yeah you're wrong about the charge in this game. That blue glow at the end is when you need to let go to do your final charge >.< but i guess you've heard this before judging from the comments. I'm a great sword user myself and made the same mistake when playing this game the first time.

    one more move that was put in this game is that after a forward roll then you can preform a sword slap far quicker than normal, plus being able to combo from that, so if a monster is knocked down and you have your sword out, then roll, attack and super charge as i like to call it.

  • @wolf101con4
    @wolf101con4 9 років тому

    I find it helpful to roll forward and press x to do a slap and then a special charge, also this can be used similar to a dash move to get closer to a monster and if you hit a monster on the head with the slap you can build up for a K.O. which is helpful if hunting with a hammer or some charge blades. Also you can role sideways and press x to do a spin attack a lot faster than pressing the normally button to do a spin attack.

  • @XenosvonFaneli
    @XenosvonFaneli 9 років тому +1

    also forgot to mention that you can use the knockup to help allies avoid a hit or to set them up for a jumping attack (though don't try this if you aren't really good with GS)

    I prefer to use the GS on huge, immobile targets such as Dah'ren Mohran or Dala. For smaller monsters, it's just a bit too sluggish for my liking, although waiting for the opportunity to strike is very nice (and it looks awesome... lets me feel like Guts from Berserk).

    • @YodasMessenger
      @YodasMessenger 9 років тому

      +Sand Katze It doesnt feel slow or sluggish at all to me to be honest, if you get into the habit of hitting and instantly putting away your weapon again after roll you are arguably more mobile than with LS or similiar things. As well, it even is very effective if you rarely get your charged hits off, leaving them exclusively for the times the monster is idle oder immobilized completely (traps, fallen, stunned etc.) , wich furthermore increases your mobility.

    I really want to get good with the GS but it is so hard for me. I’m new to MH and I hit G-rank a little while ago. I am really good with the insect glaive and charge blade but it seems from all the youtube that ive watched that the GS is the quintessential MH weapon going back to the very first MH. I am really interested in experiencing that, but the mobility that I’ve become used to with the IG and the overall simplicity of the CB are making it hard for me to adapt to the GS.

    the great sword is a great weapon if you like to do a great amount of damage but its very slow and I am not trying to stop you from you from using the great sword but when I try to use it I think its to slow because when a monster is in its enraged state its going to be the monster that causes the most damage but if you get the monster into a trap of make the monster exhausted its a very good weapon but since you said to use the hit and run tactic the great sword seems like a better weapon to me but I am still sticking with the with the Switch axe, the charge blade, and the insect glave, also the dual blades

      GS might be one of my top 3 favorite weapons in the game. I'm only at 9 star Caravan and 3 star Guild (by myself!) so I haven't experimented with some stuff like the Bow, LBG, HBG, Lance, Gunlance, etc, but GS, CB, and LS might be my 3 absolute favorites. Vulcamagnon with quick sharpening and health boost have been getting me through like 5-6 Zinogres in the 8 star Caravan Hunt-a-thon.

      I don't know what part of the tree that particular one is since the first 3 forges look exactly the same. possibly the last 2 as well. But it's the GS from the Swordscale Shard path. You need to break the back of the Dalamadur to get the dalamadur fanblade in the guild 7 quests: Advanced: Speartip Menace or Advanced: Here to Eternity. It is a 78% drop rate so it's pretty easy to make available. Unfortunately as you can tell it's a pretty late quest so you won't have access to it anytime soon if you just got the game. It is bad ass though and I'm gunning for it as well once I finish my main weapons.

    I'm still a new player and I never really considered the great sword as a viable weapon because of the very slow movement speed and swing speed. Though I did give it a shot after watching this and followed your advice to the letter. The damage is absolutely intoxicating. I think I have a new favored weapon along side my switch axe and dual blades. I annihilated a kecha wacha much faster with the great sword than I did with the dual blades. He didn't like that one bit.

    • @piccolojunior9820
      @piccolojunior9820 9 років тому

      Robert Williams It is a very good weapon when used effectively. I thought the same thing about the speed when I was first starting out back in the first Freedom game(good times). Then I thought they wouldn't put it in unless they balanced that slow speed with crazy power. I was correct. Great sword 4 life.

      Robert Williams I probably sunk a good 300 into the first Freedom before getting the second one, which was probably another couple hundred. Then Unite came along and I know I had at least 500 when my psp broke last year. Not very many games can hold my attention like Monster Hunter.

    Clearly this is and ax but its called a sword. I'm beginning to think monster hunter just doesn't give a shit anymore.

      lol yea it obviously is an axe but it looks bad ass. mh has always had weapons that clearly don't fit the classification of the group it's in. call it a quirk of the series.

      Its the weapon he has during the demo. In fact for dual blades, i was able to craft dual battleaxes but still act the same weapon mechanics.

      TheVargess It's more of a style than just a physical description. How you use it determines the category.

    For a weapon tutorial, this video is missing a ton of information. You even mistook a level 2 charge for a level 3 one. This is quite cringeworthy.

    One time I played with the worst player ever and I was charging my GS and he came behind me and spammed his gunlance shells and me went flyin' he wasnt even good with the GL. :(

    I really dont like playing as g.sword becuase its extremely repetetive. basicly all you do is repeat normal slash and charge.

      Try playing against faster monsters like Magalas or Zinogre and you will see there is more to it.
