Always said gore was underrated. It took me a couple of listens but once it sunk in, I found myself playing it a lot. Hearts/wires, Rubicon, Doomed User,Phantom Bride, etc. It’s a banger.
Real talk: aside from any anecdotal sh*t about the inter-band tensions (which they’ve always had since white pony, and it is the reason for most of their best music) Gore is their best and most interesting album post self-titled. Easily.
Gore was released when I was a sophomore in highschool. My closest friends and I practically made it our soundtrack for the summer and the rest of that year. Having lost those friends forever due to real dark life situations, gore holds a huge place in my heart. All I can do is reminisce when I hear most of those songs. Being a troubled kid, being high, hot summer days. It’s a 9/10 album.
What a beautiful and sorrowful comment. ❤ Sorry for those losses. Listening to an album from that place is something that can't be understood unless you've been through it.
I don’t know if it was my headspace when this album came out, but I was not feeling this record. I absolutely love it now, and I’ve been listening to it a lot.
Chinos vocal performances on the record are shotty honestly, which I feel can be said about a couple of their records but Gore was the worst offender I think. Either way, I still think it’s an interesting record with some good songs.
God it’s so nice to listen to someone talk about their problems with a deftones album without being a pos about it. Never join a fb deftones group! I didn’t love gore upon release (and I love every album with time) ohms to me was such a sigh of relief like oh thank god they can still kick ass
Gore is actually one of my favourites. It fits somewhere between Self Titled and Koi No, but I have a messed up order. 1. ATF 2. Self Titled 3. Gore 4. Koi No 5. Diamond 6. SNW 7. White Pony 8. Ohms 9. Adrenaline
Stephen and I think Chino were both on acid while writing Gore. That’s why he said that the writing was different. Aside from Chino and Sergio being the main ones to throw around ideas, Stephen was on a trip. That’s why it sounds that way.
i'm a die hard deftones fun, but this album never grows up in me despite A LOT of listening, it just Bores me, the only mediocre/not that good record on their entire discography, IMO The only highlights are prayers/triangles and hearts / wires great video tho, keep going
I once put deftones and Huey Lewis and the News on the same playlist (I know, I'm weird), and my music loving uncle said I could call the playlist "I want a new Acid Hologram!"
Ironically Xenon is one of my favourite Deftones songs....I have been a Deftones fan since 1998 so I,m not a newbie by any extent and some of Gore is some of my favourite Deftones stuff.....we all have different opinions of our much loved band and we can't all agree which is OK.
Every deftones album eventually grew on me fully except gore. It’s my least favorite record from them but I enjoy prayers/triangles, phantom bride, & hearts wires. Those seem to be the most cohesive /stand out to me. Ohms didn’t stand out much to me either.
Obviously, you cannot judge any Deftones record after the first few times listening to it. But Gore is probably the biggest grower for me personally. I think, people would've reviewed this album differently, if they hadn't been aware of the whole situation with Steph. I saw Deftones perform live shortly after Gore's release. They played a couple of songs from the album and they all sounded really great live. This was peak live Deftones (I mean, they had quite some horrible performances in the past and also later, let's face it). It's true, Gore is not an album I would listen to very often, with Prayers/Triangles and Phantom Bride being the exception, as I listen to them fairly regularly. However, every once in a while, I dig up Gore and listen to it front to back and I came to really enjoy it as a complete experience with its highs and lows, until I find myself humming even Pittura Infamante from time to time while doing the laundry.
The songs were definitely better live, but it remains my least favorite album. I hope they don't release something worse for the rest of their career. Steph definitely has his hand in all the best Deftones tracks. I am also curious how much input Sergio had on this album. The Bass VI sounds so thin compared to the older bass sounds from Chi and even Sergio on KNY/DE. Sergio is such a good guy and was entertaining live too so It's super disappointing I didn't vibe with it. The only songs I come back to are Phantom Bride, Doomed User and I won't skip Prayers/Triangles or Hearts/Wires if it comes on.
I love the Gore album, but I didn't evolve with the band. I pretty much bought all of Deftones CDs around the same time (apart from Around the Fur, the self titled, and White Pony, which I already had), and listened to them in random orders.
Gore us a fucking masterpiece...as is Ohms....I absolutely adore both albums. I just think they keep getting better and better. Fuck the polotics surrounding Gore, I don't give a fuck about critics or the criticism, I love the album.....enough said.
My first listen: the album starts at Hearts/Wires, everything before it felt heavy just to be heavy (and muddy, a mixing/mastering issue that crossed into Ohms tbfh) and since then I need more re-listens to have a different view of Gore. Lyrically, I’ve felt like Chino has become less and less connective since D.E (which was my first Deftones album, then I went back to Like Linus to catch up); and moreover, I feel like the band has been off the rails since KNY: in the sense of experimentation, feels like they’ve been getting lost in their own sauce (in a non constructive way), and I know Chi’s loss completely shifted their trajectory but now that Sergio has left; I wonder what’s next and I hope it hits for me cause I’m tired tbh and they’re my all time favorite band and my biggest writing influence for heavy music.
tbh i really like this experimental side of deftones. they leaned heavily into more electric/shoegaze-y stuff on their last albums and it's a really different, really cool sound, while still kinda keeping their more metal sounds. im not saying that metal deftones is bad, their past works are amazing and the self titled is one of my fav albums of all time, but i really like gore, ohms and these experimental albums.
@@SHTTRRALTY I can appreciate it that! Maybe the way they’re experimenting just isn’t my cup of tea atm; what’s funny is every new Esperanza Spaulding album has the same weird affect on me but then I go through something pivotal in life; then that new album CLICKS heavy 😭😂
@@NocturneMusic same! I forgot to mention I feel like the songwriting has lowered in quality even without Stef and Chino butting heads; but maybe I made that point already? 😂 idk, I can sing alot lyrics and riffs from every album up until DE; from then on it’s a few songs or less.
for me, some of their songs dont hit me right away, ill skip the tracks for years and sooner or later theyll hit, ill get that crystal clear repeat play in my head for days and just ride it out
Even though Chino spearheaded this album more than Stephen, I will say that the drumming and bass playing on this album is incredible. Abe and Sergio brought their A game.
I dunno, I really enjoyed Gore. Hearts/Wires was one of their all-time best songs, and then of course you have Prayers/Triangles, Xenon, Phantom Bride, Rubicon, the list goes on. They have yet to release a bad or even disappointing album.
Prayers/Triangles, Hearts/Wires and Phantom Bride are godlike songs. But on the other side here we have Acid Hologram, Geometric Headdress and Pittura Infamante, some of the worst Deftones songs in my opinion. I agree that Gore is a very polarizing album. But why isn't anyone saying the same thing about Ohms? Ohms has the same problem - a couple of great tracks (Genesis, Ceremony, Error) but all the rest of the songs is just weak, mediocre and forgettable.
Babe stop everything. Nocturne posted a Deftones vid! I will say that if Steph hadn’t said literally anything about being disengaged from the writing process. No one would say anything about it. This record slaps.
Even their “worst” album is listenable asf to their real fans. Just not our favorite, but still good. Out of 9 original albums they made 1 that wasn’t favorable. I’d take those odds any day of the week.
Deftones have been my favorite band since high school, but honestly they’ve had about as many duds as killer albums for awhile now. Gore was bad, and Ohms was only slightly better than that.
Gore was very much too much Chino, and less Deftones, it has to be all of them. It would be the same as if their next album was too much Steph and less Deftones, especially considering how Steph was significantly excluded from Gore.
I don't mind Pittura but Xenon always bored me, definitely the most filler song of the album. Overall I do still like the album and it was the first album they released after I really got into them, I got all of their previous CDs in 2015 leading up to the release of Gore when I was in high school. There are pieces of this I think are still really good however it's their most underwhelming effort to me.
I agree. When I listen to Gore, it’s not bad at all but it’s not the type of music I wanna listen to/expect when listening to Deftones cuz it just doesn’t feel like I am listening to Deftones. I think it’s mainly because of the different ambiance/vibe of Gore that makes it feel unusual as a Deftones album. I just feel there is a way for putting out something experimental and different out there, without losing that core aspect of what makes Deftones, Deftones. Y’know?
Prayers/Triangles is a banger. Otherwise, this album is weak. I’m not normally that kind of guy, but Deftones died with Chi. The first three albums are epic, the first six are great; it was all downhill from there.
Hell yeah! I was getting worried about you, my man. I will always, always list Deftones as one of my favourite bands, but none of my favourite songs are on 'Gore'. There are glimmers of greatness on the record, little snippets of sonic mastery, but they seldom if ever last for an entire track. Pittura in particular needs to be locked away along with Mein. 'Gore' for me feels like Chino kept saying "Hey, how about this..." and the rest of the band just sighed and said "Fine, whatever, hit record." It's still Deftones, just not DEFTONES, MOTHERFUCKER. P.S I genuinely laughed out loud at "I'M FUCKING HORNSWOGGLED!"
was waiting on your comment bro! 😄 if pittura and xenon are playing i dont have much horn left to swoggle. those tracks kill me man lol life really got in the way this year but imma keep making these vids even if im not as regular as I used to be but im happy you're still watching 😄
nah, man, it'd still suck if it was made by another band. it's so disjointed, it's not pleasant to listen the album.... tho, I do think the correct way to reap from this album is to just grab the songs we like and listen to them in isolation. I think they sound better if they're not in that mess of a tracklist that ruins the whole experience. still, not the best songs of Deftones, not remotely, so why even care??
I love gore. I love all Deftones albums. What I don’t like is Sergio’s situation and how they handled that
Yeahhhhh wasn't a good look.
I have such a soft spot for the Deftones that even if i didn't like an album, I'm still glad it's there lol
The flow in the song " Acid Hologram " is gold. That's one of the best songs in the album.
Always said gore was underrated. It took me a couple of listens but once it sunk in, I found myself playing it a lot. Hearts/wires, Rubicon, Doomed User,Phantom Bride, etc. It’s a banger.

Are we gonna get an Ohms video? Love the channel btw
The only problem I have with Gore is that it could've been mixed and mastered better
Disagree. It sounds a like a dive bar in a new town after a few too many joints. I love the mix

I don't care what anyone says. I like this album just as much as Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan
