Hey since so many are commenting asking: this is an older interview (you'll see it says 2010 in the description). It's part of a series on our channel where we release interviews done for our documentaries and TV series that haven't been seen before. This is from the Nu Metal episode of Metal Evolution. Which is why there are mostly questions about nu metal. Only a few soundbytes were included in the actual show, and we thought Deftones fans would like to hear his full answers. We'd be happy to interview Chino about his newer music the next time we get that chance!

Chino is a ridiculously unique vocalist. He can sing you to sleep and scream you awake, like Peter Steele or Mike Patton.

I'm so glad they went the route they did. They're a mainstream band but they're basically an underground band..shits weird but so amazing.

Not overrated, neither underrated , rated about right in the center.
Thank god they didn't take the easy route to get "famous" like papa roach or limp bizkit. Those bands are washed up, has beens that are only good for nostalgia summer concert tours at casinos. Deftones just headlined aftershock. Suck it limp bizkit.
Not a mainstream band whatsoever.
They got famous on their own terms. Now they have their own festival and they did a monumental show last year with The Cure and The Pixies. Where are Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach these days? Korn is still relevant but their music has gone down hill for the past twenty years where as Deftones still produce quality music and withstand the cultural music changes over the years.
Deftones imo were honestly the best out of the bunch of nu-metal bands, half because they saw the trend was dying and evolved past it.

Deftones is similar to nu metal but they are not a part of that movement. They got lumped in with it and had to go along to progress as a band, begrudgingly. I think that's an important distinction to make and one that Chino is pretty adamant about without trying to sound like a pretentious dick.
Also you didn't do it but as long as I'm typing I'm gonna say it pisses me off when people say 'THE Deftones'. It's DEFTONES. That's fucking it. Bothers the hell out of me!
I also have this pet peeve with people saying "The DEFTONES," It makes them sound like some kind of cheesy 1950s band. Welcome, Chino Moreno and THE DEFTONES! NO. It's Deftones. Just say it. There. Deftones..... ;)
It's so refreshing seeing Chino sober, I'm glad for him, he's lived all sides of life but now he's living the best part of it.

The most underrated members are definitely Abe and Frank. They bring all the groove and swagger to the tunes.

@Nolberto Cales this, 1000%. I found out about all the diverse heavy metal, punk and hardcore music was through bands like deftones, korn, Mudvayne, slipknot , system of a down. these bands, especially slipknot and system got me into slayer, bolt thrower, death, Pantera, ect.

DEFTONES ALBUMS are like seeds you plant them and they fucking GROOWW INTO A BIG BADASS FUCKING SOUND TRACK OF YOUR LIFE ...GORE LITERALLY IS ALMOST FLAWLESS WHEN JUMP BACK INTO THE SONGS just like everything they do..
I honestly thought Gore was their worst album by far. I love every album from Adrenaline on, but I wasn't able to say that once Gore came out. They are still my 1 of my 3 favorite bands though. Looking to see them play this Sunday night and kill it!
I would argue that Saturday Night Wrist was their worst. It was all over the place with barely any direction in it. Even Chino doesn’t like that one but to each their own
I think anyone who loves metal, can appreciate the Deftones. They are so unique and different to anything else. People hate ''Nu Metal'' but no one hates on the Dtones because they are their own thing,

This guy wrote one of the best lyrics and all their albums sounded differently over the years in a good way. Korn or limp bizkit had nothing close to that. Even after listening to all thrash metal, death metal and black metal stuff which I'm into this days more then ever I will always say deftones is my favorite band which I've been into for the last 18 years.
Facts man, tbh I can't even really listen to Korn or Limp Bizkit now that I'm older because it sounds so distinctively nu-metal and outdated. Whereas Deftones music hasn't aged at all to me, sounds just as good if not even better than when I was a kid. The test of time is a true indicator of good music

I'm glad they released Back to School. It's the song that I first heard when I was in middle school. Without them making that compromise, I wouldn't have found their stuff for a while. Long live Deftones.
Agreed, it's good that they released it, it's not even bad....I can't remember what Deftones song I heard first, I think My Own Summer, but there's probably a good chance Back to School influenced the way I found My Own Summer.

I've always been a Chino and Deftones fan. I never saw a problem with them wanting to be separate from that Nu Metal thing. I personally hate all the little tags, and genre crap myself. I think dope music is dope music, and Chino delivers dope shit spanning over a few 'genres.'

Love that chino wears his love of FNM and Patton on his sleeve. They are severely overlooked in modern discussion of experimental rock/metal, and deserve so much recognition for how ahead of the curve, and amazing they were.
Facts the mainstream always just brings up the Red Hot Chili Peppers when discussing the transition to nu metal... but the truth is most these guys were influenced by Patton when it comes to the nu metal era and beyond in rock/metal

I personally ive NEVER seen Deftones as nu metal, i see them more like post hardcore in vein of Helmet or Jawbox mixed with metal and experimental tendencies.
They only got lumped in because of how they looked honestly.
You're totally right, Deftones aren't really Nu Metal. But I think they also got lumped in because of their groove orientation and the time period they were releasing their earlier albums in, the good old 90s. They also used a turntablist on one or two albums... that's a Nu Metal thing. Let's just all admit that they had fun with it and gave it up like a bad girlfriend!
They had a lot of rap rock songs, especially on Like Linus and Adrenaline.
Adrenaline and Around The Fur arent only Nu Metal, they are the definition of Nu Metal.

It's not fair to insist so much in comparing Deftones with Korn and Limp Bizkit. You can see Chino is annoyed too. You could argue Deftones first album was new metal, but they changed direction after that, meaning that they hated that scene.

I usually like his interviews but I feel like he was trying to get Chino to talk shit about Limp Bizkit. He seemed to keep bringing them up just so Chino could talk shit - which he didn't which was very cool of him.

I never understood how three bands that sound completely different could be put into the same genre lol. Half the shit you hear in a Deftones song you'd never hear in a Korn song, and you most definitely wouldn't hear anything to Limp Bizkit in Deftones or Korn. With the exception of some riffs that Fred Durst may have tried to emulate
I don't think that "Adrenaline" nor "Around The Fur" are Nu Metal records. Some songs on it feature elements of it (7 Words, Headup, Engine No. 9) but the majority of the songs aren't. It's Alternative Metal. I even hear more Punk or Hardcore Punk elements than Nu Metal in those 2 records.
I'm glad they recorded/released back to school even if it was forced. Still one of my favorite deftones songs.

My biggest musical inspirations are deftones, joy division, linkin park, System of a Down.
But only chino Moreno and Ian Curtis are my biggest vocal inspiration.
Deftones were sorta nu-metal with their first three records but they grew out of it to me. Their later albums have a nice organic sound

Just about every single band to come out of that genre was massively influenced by Faith No More. Back in 2003 Kerrang listed Faith No More's Angel Dust as the most influential album of all time. I wouldn't go that far but it's probably the most influential rock album probably in the last 25 years. Everything from the music to Mike Patton's general stage presence was being used by tons of bands. It's crazy how many personal accounts I've heard from different bands talking about Faith No More and Mike Patton.
Its crazy, ne friend chase and i have this convo all the time. Everyone that could be classified nu metal are total patton rip offs for the most part. From vocal style, down to performance, stage clothes, movements. Everything..its pretty crazy, patton is a genius

Deftones shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Bizkit. Hell not in the same month as them. Wes was a pretty good player but Deftones are so far above that.

My twin brother and I were in line (up from Buffalo, NY) for that evening's show (AIC/Deftones/Mastodon), and watched you guys do your thing. Great interview, Banger TV. Ive always thought its strange to lump Deftones with KoRn and LB. The only thing they really have in common is gaining popularity during a similar point it time. But out of the 3, I still listen to Deftones all the time and still play their music on guitar.
Deftones have made a series of good choices that have kept them in the game. They are still relevant to this day and every album is an evolved version of the last one. Ive been a deftones fan for the past 20 years and im proud of it.

Deftones in my opinion has the perfect fan base like ever. They're not over hyped there not underrated they're just Deftones a mainstream band.
The fanbase is terrible, most of them like to say that they arent Nu Metal and Adrenaline sucks, and overrate White Pony and Diamond Eyes, that are ok records.

One of the most consistent metal bands around. Honing their sound, never jumping on trends and bandwagons. Even their worst album Gore would be considered other people’s Magnum opus. Why they’re still not on metal-archives baffles me.
Metal-Archives is a great site; one of the drawbacks is that they can be hella snobby about what is “Metal”

I just found a concert from them from 1992 I had never seen the other day. These guys were on top something special from the start. Been a fan since 95. I call musicians like these guys "puzzle piece players". Meaning that each of them make up a very definitive piece, but only until they come together do you see the whole picture and its greater than the sum of their parts. Abes drumming is so distinct with chis grooves, with chinos haunting voice, and stephens incredibly unique guitar playing that is straightforward but unlike anyone else.

I'm the snobbiest of music snobs and always have been. At age 34 I'm finally learning to stop being a jerk about it, but with music being one of my only interests since I was a little kid, I like to believe I have cred. “7 Words” and “Bored” came out when I was in 7th grade and they tickled my fancy like nothing I had heard before. Meanwhile, my big brother had the first Korn album and even though I thought I should like it, I couldn't stand to listen to it. A short time later I stumbled upon Sepultura's "Roots", it blew my young mind and over the next few years I got really into underground 80's and 90's metal; while continuing my obsession with new wave/post punk and 60s/70s rock. That was about the time Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach and Linkin Park became big and all my friends were crazy about them, but I wouldn’t shut up about how awful I thought they were, and how it sounded like some kids pissed off because mom burnt their toast. I've never thought Deftones belonged in the nu-metal category, and being aware of how terrible and gimmicky the movement was, its kind of an insult to include them. It always seemed that Deftones made authentic music, that just so happened to be heavy because it was appropriate and it fit, while the other bands sounded like they were trying to peddle cheesy, forced material via heavy delivery in a shock value approach. I know that's just my opinion and I know some very respectable people who appreciate some of the nu-metal bands. Anyhow, that's story time, Tang and Rice Krispie squares on the back table.
augenmaugen It's funny because it's like there's a trace of insult that comes with the term nu-metal, like when you say Jew, it almost sounds like you're trying to offend somebody. I guess I never really thought about it when it came to The Deftones, but they didn't come off as hokey as the other nu-metal bands did. Not as Hot Topic, teeny-bopper.

I never thought of Deftones as nu-metal. Chino's early singing style was shouting, not rapping, and their lyrics were never suburban white angst. They had more in common with post-hardcore. I always considered them alternative metal, or just metal. They just happened to come out at a time when they'd be lumped in together with the subgenre - like how GNR weren't a hair metal band, or how Pearl Jam didn't really have the same style as other bands called grunge.
