In my experience it depends on both the band and the style of music. For rock bands I’d say it is 50/50. The Deftones have had Frank doing keys for much long than he’s been an official member. I’d say the band let Frank do these parts without too much input from Terry Date (producer), but that’s just a guess. Terry seems to be the type of producer who facilitates good performances rather than writing the parts or bringing in additional instrumentation.
Man... I remember passing hours at the cyber listening this song at Deftones's website. I was too poor even to pay a pirated copy of the álbum.. Listening this passionate analisys brings me tears of joy and nostalgia.
Deftones are kinda the Radiohead of heavy music in their influence and artistic experimentation, but somehow always being identifiable as them. I’m not sure there’s a band that creates a mood like them in modern music.
Literally every artist i listen to mentions them as an influence. They are pioneers. So much more than just a 90's new metal band. There's some bands with strong moods anf atmosphere. But i cam't think of any that has their own atmosohpere so unique and deep.
I think it's due to the members diverse tastes in music. I mean earlier in adrenaline era. It was mainly Steph who had control,. You can tell it was more straight forward and chinos love of hip hop was evident. As time passed,. Chinos influence in the writing was more prevalent and I think it's the contrast being Steph's heavy metal roots to chinos love of bands like The Smiths, the cure, Depeche mode etc that creates this beautiful Chia's of noise
It's cool he mentions Hum because Chino said that they were a really strong influence on the band, especially with their "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" album
@@allthelittleworms Then what does define women in general to you? Do the women in YOUR life define women in general for you? What a silly point to make
The Deftones...what an idyllic name for a band that wandered into a sound that only few understand, a sound that I tried to convey to my friends, a sound that no one in my camp can understand, yet I hear Melody and Harmony in the strangest way. I am glad that I am not alone in my way of thinking and my misunderstanding of musical norms or abnorms. Around the Fur taught me a great lesson... You think you have heard it all, NOPE! Thanks Rick, your insight is well appreciated!!!!!!! Love your channel sir!
Deftones album “Around the Fur”. This album is so clean and hard with a one of a kind edge. It’s not over produced and makes you feel like you are right in front of them live. The most important thing about this album though is the heart. You can feel the passion and energy like no other album, not to put the other albums down, just this one is so birth like.
Beautiful song! Now how about: Faith No More - Evidence Porcupine Tree - Trains Riverside - We got used to us Pineapple Thief - In exile Gustavo Cerati- Lago en el cielo Steven Wilson - The pin drop Incubus - The warmth Stone sour - Through the glass Tame Impala - The less i know the better Placebo - The bitter end
Makes me so happy that you did “Minerva.” My favorite and I think their most underrated song. They smuggled a dream pop song onto terrestrial rock radio.
Been waiting for this one. There's just something about this song that never gets old for me. Deftones does this half chorus thing where they start some grand build up and then cut out, "for the SONG you SINGGG... Us." Then when they finally give you the full chorus, it's so... Skeet skeet The keys are so subdued too, they thicken up an already massive sound.
It's fascinating to hear the parts soloed. That track struck me when I first heard it - back when Björk, Soundgarden and Deftones ruled MTV with those songs. Extra bonus points for Rick's enthusiasm.
Been listening to Rick for about a year now. His vids are always very informative and entertaining. Just discovered Ben. Ben knows his stuff. That vid on the Tool pulloff technique was great.
What i love most about your videos is how much you seem to enjoy yourself with those songs. Makes me enjoy the songs alllll over again as if its the first time even though i listened to them over a thousand times. You translate the beauty of these songs really really well.
This is one of my favorite Deftone tracks of all time. Love that you chose this one. I am also a huge Hum and Swervedriver fan. So cool to see this video!
its always fun to watch different people fall in love with a band you have been following since its first album and you have been to more concerts than you can count, lol. great band.
I used to think he was singing out of tune, but I liked it anyway. Then I evolved and realised he's a freaking genius, and a great singer. It's tough as a singer to hold notes that are so different from the underlying music. He's digging into notes that work against the chord structure, and when you do that, it feels like you are out of tune, and your voice fights with you to move to a note that's closer to the chords. And the best part is he makes it sound easy, almost lazy, like he's so whacked out that he doesn't care about being in tune, like it's an accident that he's singing a half step off one of the core notes in the harmony. Deftones rule. One of the main groups that got me into shoegaze, ambiant/post rock, black metal, blackgaze and doom/drone metal. I just love dense, washy and ethereal mixes, with tons of dissonance.
seems he does it all by instinct right? I don't think he went to music school and thought long and hard: mm, a 9th would be an interesting choice here..... or am I wrong?
My God I love this band. Absolutely one of the most underrated and underappreciated rock bands in history. Can't wait for their next album. Like Rick points out, all of the elements of their sound are exceptional but more than anything it's Chino's incredibly unique voice that makes them so special.
growing up listening to radio and being kind of dumb, there were moments where a new track would drop and it was such a departure from the band's previous sound that i would think i was hearing a new band. i had that feeling listening to minerva for the first time. it was a whole different vibe.
The synth presence here was even more shocking than the keyboards in 'All the Small Things'.. Your passion for music resonates in everything you do and touches so many people. Thank you, Rick, for everything you do.
I love Ricks validation of how amazing Deftones are. This is the best Xmas present I could of asked for this year! The understated complexity of Deftones has been overlooked for so long! Minerva has this massive sound that gives musicians goosebumps and watering eyes because of its layered beauty. Thanks Rick! 10/10!
"Let's solo Chi's bass part and Abe's drums..." -- I swear, I thought he said "Let's solo Cheeseface Parton Abe's drums." And now I have a new fictitious band name.
Cheeseface was amazing player. His love of drumming was paralleled only by his addiction to junk food. Coming up, he did this amazing solo where he’d rest for a 1/17th note and quaff Cheetos, which is where he got the name.
Rick you have a great ear. I listen to shoegaze and its one of my favorite genres. A lot of my friends and bandmates can't detect/decipher or appreciate the chords or the dissonance of for that matter the syncopated beats. It's just a wash of noise to them. My wife can't stand it. I'm 62years old and my wife is 65. We both grew up with classic rock or dare I say traditional music. I've played in 70's-90's cover bands and now I've been fortunate enough to retire and have a home studio. The only time I can listen to this music is when she's out of the house. Or when I'm plugged in to the headphones. Lol to each his own. Thanks for breaking down the parts and sharing the talent of the band's and orchestration. It's a limited type of music that my generation likes. And admittedly one that requires close listening to "get it". \m/
Such a beautiful and focused review. I love the Deftones and am often moved by their writing. Always have been my favorite rock band, and greatly appreciate your breakdown of those tracks.

Every time I've ever gone on to learn a Deftones song on anything past their first two albums, I always find that Steph is playing something way different then I think he's playing and as of today I think I know why now. I never noticed how lock step he is with Frank to get some of that wall of sound type stuff.
Great choice Rick! I'm a metalhead and I was not into new metal and the new genres coming up back then. But Deftones were and always have been an exception since I discovered them. Here's how it happened. When I first heard this song, it was on the radio and I was driving. I had to pull over immediately and turn the volume up to the max. I was awe-struck. It was so deep, intense and beautiful that pierced my brain and left me like raptured. At the end of the song, the speaker just said the name of the band but didn't repeat the song's name, so I spent the next few days bothering my friends and asking them to pass me all the Deftones stuff they had and searching online to find this song. Of course, I finally found it and loved all the Deftones stuff: they are amazing.

Abe is such an underrated drummer
Such a huge sound. Killer drum parts. Not boring. So good.
@@argetect2847 Abe is one of the best in the game! He´s unbelievable!
Abe Cunningham is insanely good. Can vouch personally
For real, he contributes so much to Deftones’ sound. He can be very complex but simple at the same time.

I would say Tool's like that as well. New album is great, though we had to wait for it for so long I almost forgot they were my favourite band. ^^
@@AlextheBant it's 'Nu metal'.. it's a genre of it's own

I love watching Rick geek out to this song, reminds me of me
My man needs to stop name dropping HUM and do a video on them!
Fuck yes. So many great ones to choose from, The Scientists, Isle of the Cheetah, pretty much anything off You'd Prefer an Astronaut
It's cool he mentions Hum because Chino said that they were a really strong influence on the band, especially with their "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" album
Deftones are such a brilliant band. I've never heard a band be so heavy and yet so immediately and viscerally beautiful.
I just want a girl that loves me as much as Rick Beato loves good music.

Love your channel sir!
it's all about the abnorms
That 'demented' minor-major 7th is what I think of as a Portishead chord.

@@vishalgulve he definitely should!
Yep, Rick, they're right - Portishead would be a great band to do one of these videos on.
yooooo i would love to see a Portishead breakdown
Deftones album “Around the Fur”. This album is so clean and hard with a one of a kind edge. It’s not over produced and makes you feel like you are right in front of them live. The most important thing about this album though is the heart. You can feel the passion and energy like no other album, not to put the other albums down, just this one is so birth like.
Around the fur has amongst the best sounding drums ever recorded. It's insane.
My favorite album of all time!
@Axel Reunis which is really cool considering he used a different snare drum for almost every song
I've listened to this song a thousand times and I have no idea there were synths in there... damn, that's incredible.
So excited Terry Date is working with the Deftones on the new album
Erin Weatherly there’s some vinny Paul like production on those drums
NEW ALBUM?! I've missed this announcement.
Is it confirmed? 😱
Deftones is an amazing group! Was always hoping for them to get the Beato treatment and analysis, and what a great Christmas gift indeed. Cheers
Beautiful song! Now how about:
Faith No More - Evidence
Porcupine Tree - Trains
Riverside - We got used to us
Pineapple Thief - In exile
Gustavo Cerati- Lago en el cielo
Steven Wilson - The pin drop
Incubus - The warmth
Stone sour - Through the glass
Tame Impala - The less i know the better
Placebo - The bitter end

Makes me so happy that you did “Minerva.” My favorite and I think their most underrated song. They smuggled a dream pop song onto terrestrial rock radio.
This is the song that introduced me to Deftones, been a fan ever since.
Same. Heard this song on True Crime: Streets of LA for the PS2. Lol
Been waiting for this one. There's just something about this song that never gets old for me.
Deftones does this half chorus thing where they start some grand build up and then cut out, "for the SONG you SINGGG... Us."
Then when they finally give you the full chorus, it's so... Skeet skeet
The keys are so subdued too, they thicken up an already massive sound.
That PRS is alive with color, almost like it’s lit from within.
They've thrilled me as a listener for years.
You mentioned Hum!! My all time favorite band. Would love to hear one of their songs in this series.
Now that Hum has been mentioned, we absolutely need a Hum video now!
It's all green to me
So glad you brought up Hum, they're a truly underrated 90s alt band
Hum fills me with happy. and distortion. and happy distortion.
I need waffles Tabernacle yes! and without Hum, Deftones wouldn’t exist as they do today.
It's fascinating to hear the parts soloed. That track struck me when I first heard it - back when Björk, Soundgarden and Deftones ruled MTV with those songs. Extra bonus points for Rick's enthusiasm.
Very cool. That mix of 3 and m3 is WAY risky and memorable!
Please do a “Stuff Meshuggah does” 🙌
So risky and yet so confidently sung. Just amazing

Uncle Ben? Is that you... ya grouchy bastard. Lol
Been listening to Rick for about a year now. His vids are always very informative and entertaining. Just discovered Ben. Ben knows his stuff. That vid on the Tool pulloff technique was great.
As a rock musician who uses a lot of jazz chords, Chino's melodies always struck me as amazing. Takes the songs and gives them some thicc harmonies.
What i love most about your videos is how much you seem to enjoy yourself with those songs.
Makes me enjoy the songs alllll over again as if its the first time even though i listened to them over a thousand times.
You translate the beauty of these songs really really well.
One of my favorite Deftones songs and Im glad your equally enthusiastic about its sound
I clicked and liked instantly. My favorite band, and now this video is showing me that Minerva is greater than I thought.
Abe is a really, really, really good drummer. Solid, heavy, technical, funky...all done with nice creativity. Air drumming to him is a joy!!
This is one of my favorite Deftone tracks of all time. Love that you chose this one. I am also a huge Hum and Swervedriver fan. So cool to see this video!
its always fun to watch different people fall in love with a band you have been following since its first album and you have been to more concerts than you can count, lol. great band.
Chino has such a weird ear for harmony and the voice to really capitalize on that. Awesome video as always, Rick.
@@croulantroulant3082 he likely didn't know what he was doing. He is a guitarist though, so that probably informs his vocal melodies a lot.
@@Patrick-857 agreed! pretty amazing how his style was already mature at the beginning of the band when he was so young.

Chino's melodies are great and thank God he's prolific at them. Beautiful stuff.
The synth presence here was even more shocking than the keyboards in 'All the Small Things'..

Emotion. Ambiguity. Atmospheric miminal keys. Layers of soothing yet distorted guitars....and those drums
"Let's solo Chi's bass part and Abe's drums..." -- I swear, I thought he said "Let's solo Cheeseface Parton Abe's drums." And now I have a new fictitious band name.
Mike Tuttle you are bonkers.
I heard the same
You’re not alone
Cheeseface Parton? Is that not Dollys illegitimate love child?
My wife will listen to Shoegaze with me, but if it’s Kpop, I’m on my own.
I’ve always loved how the Deftones have a sort of unstable sound. Matches the lyrics. White Pony was super under-rated. Not a bad song on the album.
It was lost in the Seattle bands’ lore, though it was every bit as good as an STP.

Frank Delgado has incredible restraint. He just weaves into the mix perfectly and compliments the band in wonderful ways. Deftones are so cool.
They do sound like Hum. Thank you for intriguing me to a band I hadn't heard before. Massive!
Hum saved my friends and I from a crap-ton of shitty, mediocre music that was shoved at us during the same time period. I hope you enjoy your exploration of the Deftones- you have some amazing music waiting to be enjoyed.
Finally, some Deftones!!! Thank you Rick for having the best music channel on UA-cam!
That first drop is sick, but when the F comes in, that’s when I get goosebumps. Deftones are god tier.
I've gotten goose bumps about 8 times watching this. Forgot about this song. Whole album is great.
One of the most under rated bands of all time.. TO hear Rick talk about them with this level of enthusiasm and just childish glee... I FN love it!!! one of my favorite episodes of anything ever on YT! You have my attention!!!
One of the best things they did was bring Frank Delgado in full time....his keys and samples add such a beautiful layer to their sound 👏🏻🙌🏻
Every time I've ever gone on to learn a Deftones song on anything past their first two albums, I always find that Steph is playing something way different then I think he's playing and as of today I think I know why now. I never noticed how lock step he is with Frank to get some of that wall of sound type stuff.
Wasn't expecting a Deftones episode. This is wonderful, thank you!
Heard this song so many times .. the bass and synth mix at 12:20 never fail to give me goosebumps all over! R.I.P Chi Cheng, you're such a legend!
Deftones is my favorite band. When I saw the title my head damn near exploded. To see you go over any of their songs is like a God given treat to me! Thanks Rick, this made my night!
Everything from the Deftones is pure ecstasy.
Rick, I loved that you namedropped Hum as a shoegazer sound for the synth part, it would be awesome if you did an episode on their song Stars!
so much love for Hum here on this channel. i was suprised, then thought with clarity: "of course the people here love Hum. People here love perfectly crafted music."
