Learn how to apply an epoxy floor coating over a plywood subfloor with this DIY epoxy floor coating installation!
I applied a metallic epoxy floor coating over my shed's plywood subfloor but this same application method can be used for any plywood subfloor (bathroom, bedroom, basement, etc.).
Below are the steps you will need to follow to effectively apply an epoxy flooring system to a plywood subfloor.
00:00 - Introduction
00:32 - Prepare the Plywood Subfloor for Epoxy Application.
01:28 - Select Epoxy Floor Coating System and Products.
02:10 - Fill all Plywood Gaps, Cracks, etc. with Epoxy Crack Filler
04:39 - Apply Flexible Epoxy Primer
07:24 - Apply Waterborne Epoxy Primer
09:14 - Prepare and Mix Epoxy Color Pigments into Epoxy Resin
11:50 - Mix Part A and Part B of the Epoxy Floor Coating System
13:12 - Apply Epoxy Coating to the Plywood Subfloor Application Area
14:50 - Apply the "Accent Color" Epoxy (if applicable)
17:25 - Apply Protective Urethane Top Coat (Optional)
19:27 - Finishing Touches
I am super happy with the Epoxy Floor Coating result I achieved within my shed. It completely transformed the plywood subfloor into an eye-catching and durable shed floor.

Dude thank you so much. Being a young homeowner no one wants to give me solid advice or help because they think I’m some stupid kid. UA-camrs like you keep my home in a great looking space and can’t wait to have these in my shed!
Glad it helped! Good luck with all your projects and congrats on the home!
@@AndrewThronImprovements how much did it cost ya? Thanks!
Hey also a young home owner and I just wanted to say killer video, and super informative. Not to mention funny lol #flakefree
Metallic Epoxy looks great when u put it down but a year later it looks like crap unless u buff it and maintain it, it’s not very durable
I'm a grandmother, UA-cam is my go to for everything
We put industrial epoxy (I forget which) over a US penny floor in our kitchen. I was too cheap to buy those expensive shoes for a one-time project. I took dollar store flip-flops, traced around them on a piece of scrap plywood, cut out the shapes with a jigsaw, then attached the flip-flops to the wood with leftover drywall screws through the foam, pointy end to the floor. I made one pair for myself, and one for my husband. They worked a treat and cost $2 total instead of $100/pair.
Why go throgh all the trouble of attaching the plywood? Could have just used the $1 flip flops and tossed them afterwards.
@@AA-zq1sx the screws won't hold in cheap foam flip flops, and we didn't want to lose our shoes in the middle of the epoxy pour.
Great idea, thanks for sharing
@@master6676 you're welcome!
They are about $12
I've been on epoxy binge for the past few days. Of all the different ones, your design outcomes are top notch! Thanks for posting this!
Appreciate it!
No one explained like this guy wow he’s too good
Glad it was helpful!

Great job Andrew. Wow! Your shed is nice enough to live in! Very detailed instructions too, and i'm sure this will help a lot of folks apply epoxy! It's super easy and so fun! Can't wait to see your next video!
Thanks! I am super happy with how it turned out! Appreciate your help and thanks for watching!
Dont you have facebook? I would like to discuss on facebook messager about the colors for the dining room in spring. Thank you.

Great Job, I have to say I enjoy watching your content and learning
Thanks Hugo! Appreciate it!
Great , informative video - Thank you for great work, looking forward to your next one
That shed is amazing,
Excellent tutorial, and very much appreciated. I'm using Spartan products over a 290 sq ft OSB floor in my woodshop and if anyone's interested I can speak to getting that material ready for epoxy. (Plot spoiler: I wish I had plywood instead. But you work with what you got.). Before anything else I used Spartan CF100 crack filler for any gaps between sheets and countersunk nails (should have been screws, but I learned that too late). Spartan recommends applying KILZ2 (not 3, for whatever reason) before laying down the Flex. Needed two gallons.
Next the Flex, which I had trouble spreading out and distributing evenly maybe because I didn't have a rubber notched squeegee, only a notched metal one for concrete...useless. So regular straight edge rubber is what I used. **One thing you might want to stress is how much time you have to spread the stuff before it starts to set and becomes super viscous.** Don't dilly-dally. I barely made it. Also, Spartan indicated one gallon would be enough to cover my 290 sq ft but in hindsight I wish I'd had two. It's good enough, I guess.
I'm applying the WB primer today. Will let you know how the rest of the project goes. BTW I'm not doing metallic, just the flake "cast" as they call it mixed in with the Clear. Also adding a can of Spartan's non-skid. At this time I'm not planning on HPU top coat. Will let you know how it goes. Total cost of Spartan materials: about $1000 (2024). Not cheap, but good.
Thanks Andrew, cool floor!
Great job I can’t wait to try this
Looks absolutely fantastic 👌
Thanks!
I was so creative in my childhood trailer with particle board flooring! The carpet was gone by 2003 and you already know I was on a budget living there Han solo!
Great explanation made it seem so simple great work done 👏🏽 🔥🔥
Appreciate it!
Would love to know how its holding up, Great video thanks for the help!
Same
may do this in my bathrooms and kitchen in my renovation property looks great
Wow! Just Wow!!!! Looks amazing!
I appreciate it! Thanks for the support 🙏
You guys do it faster every time. Love your shed.
Thanks Patrick! Appreciate you 🙏🙏
That's exactly the same color and look of my Leggari counter tops we did a couple of years ago. Looks awesome.
Thanks!
This is SUPER COOL MIGHT DO MY BEDROOMS WHEN I I GET BACK HOME
Great tips on the joints.
Nice video and results! I would recommend using construction paper along the perimeter with the tape to protect the walls. But overall you did a great job on this floor! 🥰💚✨
THIS IS AMAZING. We are first time homeowners on a concrete slab home, desperately trying to get rid of this old dirty carpet. THANK YOU 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks and good luck!!
Brilliant vlog thank you.
Thanks!
absolutely divine

Very good talk through very helpful.

I was looking for a video like this 12 months ago!
Haha for the next epoxy project then. Hope your project turned out well
@@AndrewThronImprovements I ended up doing tile instead and it turned out great
Nice job 👍🏽
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
This is not something I would ever do - looks very expensive and complicated! But wow, this was one of the most incredibly satisfying videos I have ever watched! Thanks for sharing!
Really he just showed you step by step lol
It's cheaper than 99¢ 12x12 stick on tile and is waterproof as well as more durable and easy to repair. Remember that stick on tile has to follow the arrow on the bottom so any cuts take up a whole tile and the rest is useless or the pattern doesn't match.
@@tomharrell9575 I agree the epoxy has way more value but from the pricing from the link he has shows a little over $500 for the kit to do 150sqft. you could do laminate for that price let alone pretty much any stick on tile for far less.
@@indymodz177 stick-on flooring pills up vinyl flooring gets holes and gouges and wears out quickly. There is a reason why commercial Labs pour epoxy.I'm not to mention they're not the only people in the business it can't be done much cheaper.I think those folks have just been doing it for awhile and they're proud of their product and think that you should pay for something that's of what they believe is higher quality.
@@tomharrell9575 metallic epoxy does not hold up, it look great when u apply but once u start using it, you can see every imperfection, your footprint, bike tire marks, dog scratches, anything show up on there.
You know, who would have "thunk" this? We have mobile home rentals and I am getting so tired of replacing carpet and flooring. I told my hubby there has to be another solution. Here it is!
How big was your space and how many man hours did you put in? It's a lot of work.
Great job! Loved watching your video and your steps are great!
I searched for this to see if it was possible and possibly a cheaper alternative for our mobile home too
WOW... So Beautiful...
EXCELLENT JOB...
I have those same floors in my Vintage RV...
This video is a God-send... Love this video...
Great job...
Thanks Judi!
Hi Judi can I see the floors in your RV? I am thinking of doing that in mine? Thought I was crazy lol
@@celiafernandez6065
You're not Crazy... Go For It.
I do not have the pictures anymore... I sold the RV and my old phone died when it fell in my Coffee!!! LOL
Great job brother 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊
Thank you so much
I'm glad I came across this video and now i subscribe
I appreciate it!!
Amazing
Very very beautiful man. I want to do my garage floor like that the same way
Appreciate! You should! Just consider adding something to make it non-slip.
If you can use advantec for a large house, it’s cool and a better subfloor for that purpose. For a see this is great, you can mop it and sweep fine.
🎳 love the methodical arrangement ; patience is a virtue
BEAUTIFUL
Thanks!!
91% isopropyl alcohol is great for getting that sanding dust off the floor. Use a spray bottle.
We have a couple of really friendly cats in the neighborhood and I had a picture in my mind of doing tjis, turning around and seeing MeowMeow stomping around to say hello. Gotta love him!
Hey, hows it holdin g up after a year? I wanted the same for my plywood floor shed and contacted a professional who refused to apply epoxy floor to a plywood shed due to the movement that could be in the floor and temperature changes. Instead he recommended polyurethane floor due to its elasticity and resistance to temperature changes. Your thoughts after a year?
Thanks!
Appreciate it, Tim! Thanks for supporting!!
Thank you.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Nice!
love it
Appreciate you
Appreciate you watching!
Thank u 🙏
I really want to put a floor like that in my kitchen however it scares me...lolol
Do you have enough time before it starts to harden? Your videos are awesome . I came across one on u-tube and began to watch one after the other. Boy do I have a lot of work ahead. You make it look pretty easy although,... I am sure these jobs are harder than it looks 😮
Well back to your videos. I absolutely love them. Tyfs 😊
Thank you so much for this video. I'm removing all carpeting and didn't know you could use epoxy over wood (thought concrete only). I'm doing all my floors in white.
Thanks for watching and good luck!
How'd it go?
@@stillhavecommonsense6875 Still working. Should have been finished by now but I've been putting in a lot of extra hours at work these past two months.
Thank you so much. This video provided emense value to me. I am thinking of attempting this to my mobile home. Outside dimensions are 16 by 90 so I believe inside square footage is about 1250 sq ft but haven't taken proper measurements yet. The big thing is drastically different costs of epoxy. I want a good product but fine to buy clear then source color or texture elsewhere and mix it myself. Open to recommendations because from reviews it looked like the rustolium you get what you pay for. I definitely want something that will last. Any advice recommendations products to look into would be greatly appreciated since people on here have thousands of years of wisdom. Thanks!
wow wow wow
Outstanding job Andrew! The color choice is perfect. My daughter used blues on her concrete floor for a similar look. I thought you built your shed on a concrete base; guess I missed something. My back aches for you, however, was there no longer handles available for that floor rolling job? :) Bt, you are young with a different perspective. It is an amazing metamorphosis however you look at it: style, electrified, storage friendly and beautiful to look at. Thanks for the show and I'm looking forward to the next one. Patrick
I appreciate it, Patrick! I built a plywood shed base frame on TOP of the concrete slab actually - but I could have just build the shed slab-on-grade. And I hear you on the back lol but it's mainly my knees these days haha. Appreciate you watching and for the continued support of the channel!
@@AndrewThronImprovements I really feel your pain WRT your knees. Mine have both been replaced ergo no pain, unless I kneel. Imagine the odd looks at Mass when I do not kneel with the others. I have to really turn up my Halo and forge on. The contractor pads don't fit and can't be adjusted for me. Eventually I'll find some that fit, stay in place etc. I will remain faithful ATI fan and patiently wait for a full blown ATI channel with all your talents showcased for all to see. Just set up your investment scheme now so you don't have to delay filming when all the $$$ begins to come in :). Are the Oysters any good this season?
Nice, But is it tough??? I'd like to do this to my Shop which will have tons of tools and heavy things are going to fall.
Looks 👀great.
I appreciate it! Thanks so much for watching!
@@AndrewThronImprovements bro you reply to someone saying this but not the cost?
Im going to be honest I thought you ruined it with those swirls as you were doing them, but it actually turned our rather impressive and i really liked it. Thank you for sharing Andrew. Looks really good.
Haha I did too as I was going it! But I’m happy with how it came out. I just trusted the process and went for it
SIC!!! 👍
That was very cool. A lot of layers and patience. Would you do this again or just lay flooring?
I would but not for such a small area! Maybe for a 2 car garage
Hey! Thanks for the great and informative video. There seems to be mixed info about applying epoxy to wood surfaces since the give in the wood may cause cracking in the epoxy. Can this be alleviated with a base (flex coat)? What was your experience with this project? Did your floor not crack at all?
Awesome job my brother. Can you let us know around about the total cost of this project. I'd like to way my options. Thanks and keep the videos coming
Fr. I was looking at this video hoping it would be cheaper than wood. But it seems just as much or even more expensive
So no grinding is needed it only applies to concrete? & flex proxy product is only for wood & wouldn’t be needed for concrete ? When you were applying your white Epoxy how did you wait until adding the black epoxy?? Is there a color chart you may know for on what colors would be great to use as a design just how you used this black & white ? BTW your code was the most helpful thank you for this I don’t really comment but you are different & actually spreads a wealth of knowledge thanks for giving back !
Top coat should always have full length rolls
Coloring powders!
Great video. But your mask choice may be incorrect. An N95 mask is for particulate matter. You should consider a NIOSH Organic Vapor Respirator instead to filter the epoxy fumes. A dust mask isn't doing anything except making you uncomfortable.
Did that company hook you up with that epoxy? If not, bet it was expensive.
Great video, how is it holding up?
Please can you help me know which type of machines I nerd for a such project, good job
Can i use this method for ceiling its would be so wowwww❤
Thank you for sharing I had no idea what Epoxy was. How much did you spend on all the materials to complete project? I would love to try it myself for my 12 x12 bedroom..
I love the floor. But I'm curious how much it cost to do the entire thing? Maybe you mentioned it somewhere and I missed it. Thank you!
I'm sure it wasn't cheap. Great idea though. I'm going to have to look into something like this, even if it's a more basic approach.
But my shed is 14x20, quite a bit more material
Overtime as the floor settles would the epoxy crack?
I think it's a rubber type material. So it flexes with movement
It won’t crack, the primer is flexible and the epoxy will bend, it actually takes a lot for epoxy to crack
We're thinking about doing this on our exterior back deck. Is there anything else we need to know about exterior application?
I really like the metallic look! #flakefree. Best looking shed I have ever seen. How much do you charge in rent?
#flakefreeisthewayto Thanks for watching! Free rent for yard tools and shovels.
yo quisiera q explicarán en español esta muy interesante

Could this work on a second floor bathroom if I lay plywood over the subflooring?
I'd like to do the walls as well. If possible
Looks pretty good. I would like to do that to my shed too... how much did this end up costing you? $1000'ish?
Please tell us how much for all products to do this shed floor I want to do a plywood room in my house how much should this cost please say!😊
Those products will cost around 1000 dollars. My dad owns an Epoxy Floors Business.
Brand new subscriber and I would love to know what was the square footage of the shed and how much Where the overall cost ?????
I don't have a plywood floor, I have spruce floor boards so there are gaps along every board. Do I need to fill each crack before I can move to the next step?
You should Always Use a wet roller!!!
Can you put garage epoxy paint over a wood deck? I am trying to get my large deck a few more years of wear before I have to replace it.
Will this product work on the exterior? Sunlight and freeze/thaw cycles?
