Oh boy. Get ready for a ride. Dream Theater will take you many places. I recommend the entire Metropolis 2: Scenes From A Memory album, In The Presence Of Enemies Part 1 & 2, Forsaken, The Glass Prison, Panic Attack, & anything from their Live At Budokan concert, preferably Hollow Years & In The Name Of God.

The Keyboardist is Jordan Rudess, The Wizard (he is the 2nd, Kevin Moore is founding member). He has created numerous musical apps for Apple & iPad, a Mac can be hooked up to these various keyboards using his programs that are unbelievably brilliant! Jordan went to Juliard, John Pettrucci & John Myung went to Berkelee (with founding member Mike Portnoy-drummer), (their 3rd lead singer) James LaBrie is also genius vocalist from Canada, (the 2nd drummer) Mike Mangini taught at Berkelee prior to joining the band. This band is great live!

This was part 5 of a series of songs about AA called 'The 12 Step Suite'. As such it revisited all of the riffs of the previous 4 songs. The suite was written accross multiple albums by their previous drummer and co-founding member Mike Portnoy. It's a bummer they never got to play the whole thing together before parting ways.
The other songs are: The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root Of All Evil, Repentance.

Just saw them live for maybe the 7th time last week. Live shows and recordings are definitely a great way to introduce someone to the band because people can appreciate and enjoy the musicianship on display before the music really clicks. This was actually a good introductory song suggestion (even if it's the last of a series of related songs, google "Twelve-step Suite"), since it's not overly progressive for a new listener. Gotta get your feet wet before taking the plunge deeper :) Have fun discovering them, because there's a shit ton of fantastic music to unpack. Don't worry, the bass player is also a world class beast, like all of them.

"I can see this being an Ozzy Osbourne song".
I'm sorry. No, my friend. Ha! Ozzy Osbourne and his music over the years has been incredible.... But I'm afraid Ozzy could not perform this song even in his craziest imagination.

Fun fact: this song is the grand finale to a set of 5 songs called the *"12 Step Suite"* that former drummer Mike Portnoy wrote as he struggled with alcoholism. You need to react to the rest of the suite in order to truly appreciate The Shattered Fortress. The other 4 songs r as follows:
    1. The Glass Prison
    2. This Dying Soul
    3. The Root of All Evil
    4. Repentance

This is the very deep end of Prog metal. :) individually these guys are each in the top 0.1% (or higher) on their respective instruments with the exception of James LaBrie (the singer) who kinda gets dumped on a lot but would be considered good in pretty much any other band. He’s also aged harder than any of the other members of the band and can’t sing as well as he used to.
This is a bit of an odd song to start off with as it’s the finale of a 5 song suite that spans 5 albums detailing the former drummer’s struggle with alcoholism and his recovery from it. It has a lot of callbacks and themes from previous songs and it is a bit disjointed out of context of the rest of the 12-step Suite.
These guys have some truly EPIC tracks along with their more standard fare, and you really can’t go wrong with anything they do. As far as live vs studio, I would say that the band is more impressive live but the singer is better in the studio where he’s in a more controlled environment. Sometimes good to listen to both live and studio versions of the songs just to confirm to yourself that what they are playing in the studio is actually physically possible.

I think James LaBrie's voice is fine, especially when you listen to his solo and Ayreon work.
I think in Dream Theater he's fixed on some particular image that doesn't actually exist and tailors his vocals to it, but when others work with him they let him explore his range and skill.
His Theater Equation work is top notch, cause he's also acting on stage, something that was on his bucket list for a long time.

Nathan Berry not saying he’s bad. My point was in comparison with the rest of the band’s abilities, he’s not as much of a virtuoso as the others. You do have a good point about the vocal stylistics, though. I haven’t listened to much of LaBrie outside of DT, but I suspect he’d be much stronger in a lower register these days. Unfortunately, most of Dream Theaters older tracks and many of their newer ones are still up in the Geddy Lee vocal range and style which is no longer LaBrie’s strong point. I always thought of him as a more vocally pleasing Geddy, but I think those days are behind him now. Even if their future music is more suited to the new vocal paradigm that he is able to offer, I fear that he’s no longer capable of properly performing the classics that the band has in their repertoire. It’s a shame, cause I’ve always liked his voice and it’s truly synonymous with the DT sound.

If you want to do another Dream Theater song, do the studio version of Glass Prison. As deep a rabbit hole as you can go down with Dream Theater, I've always found that to be the best introduction song.

Hey man! The bassist has solos in a few songs, notably The Dance of Eternity, which is one of their best songs! They've done it live many times, but the one from this show and the one from Live Scenes in New York is great as well! Another great one to check out would be Instrumedley from the show Live at Budokan!

That was a continuum the keyboard player was playing. Nifty little thing, isn't it?
This drummer is amazing. many fans consider him just a machine-like clone of their original drummer who he replaced though. Check out something older, pre-2011 with Mike Portnoy on drums. This song is the 5th song in a 5 song series about Portnoy's battle with alcoholism, btw, with many musical references to the four previous songs.

Hey man you probably already know this, but I dont see anyone commenting about it here. The Shattered Fortress is the culmination of 4 other songs that came before it. Be sure to listen to those as well, its pretty much one long song about the former drummer's alcohol addiction and the steps to overcome that. Awesome reaction btw!
