Dude you should react to their song Breaking All Illusions from the same performance as this one, breaking the fourth wall. And yeah there's a singer, the dance of eternity is just an instrumental. Breaking All Illusions is a bit longer, it's like 12 minutes but it's so worth it. It keeps you hooked the whole time. There's Rush vibes, Pink Floyd vibes, and of course time signature changes. You'll definitely enjoy it. But great reaction I love seeing people discover DT for the first time

This one is too often reactors' introduction to Dream Theater. It's probably their most crazy complex piece, and sort of gives an exaggerated first impression of progressive metal for a new listener. But they were just having fun and swinging for the fences when they put this one together. Put it is a good display of their virtuosity and tightness as a band. And props to the orchestra for learning to play this one too.

Dream Theater does not use a click track for live performances. This song gets a lot of notoriety for having 108 time signature changes. James LeBrie is their vocalist. They all met at Berklee College of music, except for the drummer, who is a replacement for founding member Mike Portnoy, and keyboard player Jordan Rudess, who attended Juilliard, and replaced their original keyboard player. as a Dream Theater die hard, its hard for me to just pick one song to say hey check this out. Dream Theater has all the cup's of tea so to speak. You want slow and melodic progressive songs, check out 'Solitary Shell' or 'The Spirit Carries On'. if you want progressive rock check out 'Peruvian Skies' or Under a Glass Moon' or 'Forsaken' If you want Progressive Metal where I feel Dream Theater shines with fast, complex heavier music Check out: 'Constant Motion' or 'As I Am' or 'At Wit's End' ...and lastly if you want the Dream Theater special, take a day off work and listen to their Master Piece's known as Epics. They have singular songs that are over 20 minutes long like 'The Count of Tuscany' or ' A View From the Top of The World' or full concept albums like 'Scenes from a Memory'

Mike Mangini uses a large drumset because he is ambidextrous, or as close as he can be. The toms (on this set-up at least) start in the middle with a high tone, and go down in tone as he goes out. You will notice he starts in the middle for fills and goes left or right. He can play most of the parts with one hand using the mohler technique, and he used to hold the world record for most beats per minute with his hands. He also has very good separation, meaning he can play different beats with each limb, though he might not be as good as others on that point. He is arguably one of the best drummers in the world.

I've been listening to Dream theater since the beginning and I've always thought of them as "music nerds". I mean that in the most respectful way. When I listen to them, I just sit there in silence (like the crowd is here) in amazement at the technical splendor. When I listen to them, its a very different experience than listening to a group like Band-Maid (who are also amazing musicians) that just rocks and is so fun to listen to, and I cant stand still while listening.

My favorite part of Mike Mangini's kit is that it's mirrored left and right as he can lead with either hand. If you look at the overhead view, the toms don't go from high to low in one direction (for example, from left to right for right handers). Highest tom is right in front of him, next is to the left, then to the right, then to the left, etc. And you're in luck as former Dream Theater drummer, Mike Portnoy, breaks down the time signature at the end of the song in one of his instructional videos. It's pretty nuts: ua-cam.com/video/vswDu3IlUbg/v-deo.html

They do have a vocalist but obviously also do instrumentals. I watched a video of Mike Mangini leading a drum workshop. He had two drum sets on stage. One set up for a right handed drummer and the other for a left handed drummer. He moved back and forth between the two set demonstrating all sort of technical things and if you just listened there is NO clue that he is switching up sets like that. Another nice, thoughtful reaction. Love the variety of genres you react to.

The unison / harmony soloing has been a part of their sound since the very beginning - all the way back to their 1st album in 1989. And no, they don’t use a click track live. Both of their drummers have impeccable internal metronomes, although Jordan has a tablet-like device where he has scanned in his musical notations/transcriptions because he hates memorizing things. Their only big mainstream hit was “Pull Me Under” from 1992, which you should hear if you haven’t; Opinions in the fan base vary WIDELY - For me, Awake, Scenes (which this is from) Six Degrees, Train Of Thought & Octavarium are my favorite albums, but there are a bunch of really good songs sprinkled over their 30+ year recording career.

My current prog kick is Animals as Leaders. Two guitarists playing 8-string guitars to cover the low and a drummer. I would check out live versions of the songs so you can see how the two guitars interact and see how insane the drummer is. A good start might be "Physical Education" as it's got a hook and is a little more straight forward than some of their more complex stuff. "The Brain Dance" is another good song with the main focus being an acoustic guitar part....a really beautiful song.

My favorite band of all time! Glad you liked it, but this is definitely NOT an entry level song for new listeners haha. You should check out Count of Tuscany, Octavarium, and A View From the Top of the World! All 20 minute epics that tell great stories.

Me: Programs Christmas light to dream theater.
    Neighborhood kids: instant seizure.
Town I live in: is the town burning?
Gandalf: the beacons of Gondor are alight.
    Australia: is America burning?
Aliens: what is that light signal saying? Either "don't trust the metronome" or "top this one you intergalactic fucks."
    Me: shiny.

Not sure if anyone commented about this yet, but Mike Portnoy, DT's original drummer, did a measure-by-measure count through of the part of the song featuring some of the craziest time signature and tempo changes: ua-cam.com/video/vswDu3IlUbg/v-deo.html
Just thought that might be of interest!

Dream Theater was and is on the radio all the time where I live since the 80s when I was in high school. Also, if you're listening to that hillbilly trailer music 🤮and not a rock station, of course you're not going to hear them.

Hummm. Hillbilly trailer music. Hummmm. We would never be friends. I don’t have the intestinal fortitude to put people down either for their taste in music nor their hierarchy in life.

This piece is a dream sequence from a long story on the album metropolis part 2. Thats why its not exactly melodic. Its chaotic without anything to hold on to.

So I'm new here but Hello! It's awesome to see a unique "perspective" from the Country Music world.
It looks like no one I've read so far has included this particular video, from the co-founder and original Drummer "Mike Portnoy" who has MANY projects and bands he's started-up after, here he is in the studio (not sure if this was during the making of "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory" album where this track is from) where he counts the various time signatures: ua-cam.com/video/vswDu3IlUbg/v-deo.html
One day you'll react to their track off their 2nd album (with vocals from their "new" addition at the time; "James LaBrie") "Metropolis Part 1" (1992) which was sort-of a joke, they had no plans for a part 2 at all. You'll hear its "Themes" in the instrumental Dance of Eternity. Metropolis was their 1st "ultra-complex" track. Sadly, Dream Theater gets pigeon-holed often that they are just a shred/technical band, when they have wonderful tracks that are "Song" oriented, but most of the time people request their EPICS, which they do well. But tracks like; Eve (instrumental), Lifting Shadows off a Dream, Another Day, Space Dye Vest, I Walk Beside You, Disappear, Speak to Me, Solitary Shell and many others demonstrate how they hold back and write songs with great melodies and hooks.
Something a bit more extreme in the world of *Prog Metal* in regards to _complexity_ are 2 of MANY bands out there, but possibly even many Dream Theater fans don't know about; (Albums) *Watchtower* - "Control and Resistance", and from decades later; *Spiral Architect* - "A Skeptic's Universe". Watchtower are one of the 1st Prog Metal bands, but were very complex (the guitarist "Ron Jarzombek" has a few side bands as well), and in a magazine would be my 1st time hearing the term "Math Metal" in 1989 with their 2nd album release (Control and Resistance). Spiral Architect picked-up that mantle in 2000, this time with "2" guitarists. Both bands incredibly have very melodic vocalists singing and keeping in-pace with the odd-meter, angular/atypical rhythms and tempo changes. HIGHLY recommended to get a taste for the complex.
For the originators of Prog Metal (the Fathers); look to *Queensrÿche* and *Fates Warning* (and their different era's, including their sister band "Arch/Matheos"). Unfortunately Fates Warning don't get the credit they deserve and are still in that underground niche, even though they have 13 Studio albums, and by the 3rd album in 1985, were very different than most "Metal" bands with their tempo changes and the unique vocals of John Arch, and by their 5th album (with a new singer Ray Alder, who came in on the previous album) they solidified the new subgenre Prog Metal and its sound. FW, along with Queensrÿche, Watchtower and Rush (the Grandfathers of Heavy Progressive Rock) also inspired & influenced Dream Theater.
If you are ever curious, here is a sample Playlist of Fates Warning: ua-cam.com/play/PL2DU3TBNutEdLLxfBF-5k3GgR0HKe6jmG.html
I will definitely checkout more of your Reactions. If you are curious about more "Bands" from various types of Prog Metal (and Progressive Rock), I can share more playlists with you and your audience.
    - See you again \m/.
