THIS is the side of DT no one mentions or suggests. Sadly all the people who don't like DT that are over critical of the band who believe they are just a "wankfest", don't know or care to know about all their songs where they _hold back_ on the instrument virtuosity, yet use their "chops" to create a more melancholic mood to match the subject matter. It's just another part of Dream Theater that I have enjoyed since WDADU (in particular on that album, _within_ the songs to change the mood), especially from Images & Words, on. Other songs that are like that; "Wait for sleep", "Another Day", "Surrounded", "Eve", "Lifting Shadows Off a Dream" (which I liken to Rush - "Mystic Rhythms"), "To Live Forever", "Anna Lee", "Hollow Years", "Take Away the Pain", "Beyond this Life", "Through Her Eyes", "The Spirit Carries On", "Disappear", "Goodnight Kiss", "Solitary Shell" and on . . . .
@@dodgrblu My favorite DT song is "Surrounded" because of how they control the dynamics of the song so perfectly. A clear build, climax, fall. Masterfully composed. But nobody ever listens to that tune.

The Twelve Step Suite consists of 5 songs from different albums creating an album within five albums. One song from each of five different albums combined to make a "sub-album" dealing with Mike Portnoy's issues with addiction. Powerful album on its own. Also great idea to stick with studio songs from Dream Theater, IMO James Labrie has a great voice when he actually sings, but live he tends to fall into a pattern of yelling and screaming random vowels instead of singing the actual lyrics - it can get tremendously annoying.

as to the sirens, I believe the keyboardist hits a HotKey on his keyboard and it starts an mp3 soundtrack of Sirens in the distance. In one video, and a totally different song, I saw Rudis hit a key on the far bass end of the keys, and a sound effect started playing. So I say no it's not John on his guitar. He's good and beyond, but he ain't that....lol Also, I have really enjoyed watching your reaction videos. I have repeatedly watched them, and I'm always looking for your next Dream Theater reaction. Subscribed. :) I still remember when this song came out and my brother got me a copy of this track right after 9/11... everyone I knew thought this was about the WTC... but it was about addiction.
This song is pretty special for me. It is the first one of a suite composed of 5 songs that drummer Mike Portnoy composed. The songs together comprise 12 parts, each one corresponding to one step of the Alcoholic Anonymous (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve-step_Suite). The other songs being "This Dying Soul", "The Root Of All Evil", "Repentance" and "The Shattered Fortress" (each one belonging to a different album). Also, that "chicken fry" sound at the beginning should be of a vinyl record player with its needle on a part of the disc where there is no music but noise (it is the ending of last album's last song, "Finally Free" of Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory). They also keep on using the last note of the last song of an album as the first one of the first song of the following album in the next three albums (Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - with its 6 songs, Train of Thought - with its 7 songs, and Octavarium - with its 8 songs). Yes, these people love to put easter eggs on their albums.
I came in at Images and Words. Followed them till Mike left. I've found that their albums increased in story telling and instrumental expression along the way. I enjoyed them more back when they were more orchestral. But I think above all, the thing I find the most fascinating is what their name means Jamel, thanks for taking them for a spin. I enjoyed watching
Just found your channel and have been watching ur vids all damn night long. Great reactions to some awesome music. I love to see reactions from people who have not heard music outside of their experience. Having said that, I do have a huge request...a song I have asked others to react to with no response, but I'll keep trying. The song is called "Last Chance" and the band is Shooting Star. This epic is from 1980 by a band from Kansas City, Mo that should have made it much bigger, but was overshadowed by bands like Kansas and Triumph with similar sounds. This song is probably the most epic sounding jam that just builds and builds all the way to the finish. It's roughly about the story of Moses, but not in a straightforward kind of way. With strong lyrics, big drums and a gigantic ending, it will leave you standing and calling for more! You just gotta trust me on this one, it is one of the most powerful songs EVER!!!! I'm 10 years older than you and grew up on classic rock and singer-song writer music in the 70's, than went heavy metal and head banger in the 80's and 90's. Now I'm all about the reggae with the new west coast sound hittin' me hard. As such, I'm out of my realm on rap and hip hop. I'd like to ask you to turn a rock guy on to a few suggestions I can check out myself if you would like to hit me with somethings. Peace and music to you!
I think the fact they reproduce each and everything they compose in a live show makes them truly fun to watch. great reaction! I had the same back in 1991
Watching this is the first time iv heard this song with real nice headphones and the part right before the chorus was so cool where his voice sounds like its going in circles around you like the lyrics say. Iv heard songs with tons of move it 2 one side or back and forth but nothing like that.
That intro is sound of rain Intro of the glass prison (1st song of six degrees of inner turbulence album) is the same with outro of scene nine: finally free (the last song from metropolis pt. 2: scenes from a memory)
You should react to the band Bad Religion. They’re called the “Godfathers of SoCal Punk.” They’ve been around since 1980 and they still put out records to this day. I know you don’t normally react to punk bands, but they have really good vocals and thought provoking lyrics. A few songs by them that I would recommend starting out on would be Sorrow, Generator, Kyoto Now, or also pretty much anything from the album Stranger Than Fiction. I think you would appreciate what they do. Keep doing what you do!🤘
I love the reaction, the music still blows my mind as a long time dream theater fan. My only gripe is your commentary during videos. There are things going on here as a musician myself, I am constantly figuring out. If I made videos like this, I'd listen completely then give my commentary.
Hey brother! Recently discovered your channel. Enjoying seeing you discover new music, especially Rush, Iron maiden, and Dream Theater. Apologies if I mention anything you have already reacted to... I am just starting to work through your older videos. A few songs I would recommend are RUSH: Natural Science, Hemispheres, and La Villa Stangietto (instrumental). Iron Maiden: Phantom of the Opera and Rime of the Ancient Mainer (preferable from the Live After Death album), and Dream Theater: A Change of Seasons (This is to Dream Theater what 2112 is to RUSH), Learning to Live, Breaking All Illusions, and Stream of Consciousness (instrumental). Based on your reactions to those three bands I think you would appreciate the bands: Savatage, Redemption, and Queensryche.
Porcupine tree - Arriving somewhere but not here live! Or Anesthetize live! Please for the love of God check them out one day lol thank you for all the amazing videos man
so back in the day, before the album was released, DT gave us some demos and teasers of this album. a few of the songs, edited a bit shorter or changed a bit. imagine being a DT fan back then, knowing what they are capable of, and you get some teasers for the album! it was amazing! then we finally heard Glass Prison first on the album and were like OMGGGGGGG :) you look like how i felt in january 2002 :D
Jamal, you ABSOLUTELY need to try "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance" suite in its whole! It is a multi-part suite, about 45 minutes long, actually the whole second disc of the very album "The Glass Prison" opens. And this whole-disc-song is truly THE VERY BEST SONG DT EVER MADE!!! The best song in all the prog metal, I should even say! Bro, until you listen to this, you've never truly lived! And, compating to the first disc of the album, the exorbitant quantity of notes do not sound too overwhelming, it's actually pretty relaxing in certain places:) and the vocals! James Labrie only fully opened here on the whole album, the first disc was more like a warm-up for him) And the LYRICS! Please, make yourself such a wonderful gift, react to it!
First person I've seen to recommend tracks from "Falling Into Infinity". More people need to pay more attention to that album; it was reviled for years by fans as being a "sell-out" album full of commercialized tracks - but there are some amazing pieces of music on there. "Hells Kitchen" / "Lines in the Sand" is an absolute belter (best enjoyed back-to-back), and "Trial of Tears" is one of my most favourite songs of all time. And of course, "Take Away My Pain".
@@jamelakajamal I read somewhere in internet that Mike Portnoy arguably most technically skilled drummer in the world. Well, it was around 2010, or 2011 year maybe, since then situation may change, I lost my passion for rock and stop to watch precisely. But every time I hear DT at first I recognize "firm" style of Mike. He can do on drums everything that you can ever imagine, everything at all, that ever possibly in our physical reality.
You've stepped into the world of Dream Theater my friend!! Your life will never be the same. Check out Dark Eternal Night from Dream Theater and be blown away again!!
Thank you for looking up the meaning of the song. Its one of a couple of others to complete this. You already did dying soul which is the second song to the 12 step suite. the next one would be "The Root of all Evil" - Octavarium and the last one "The Shattered Fortress" They dedicated one song per album over 4 years for this 12 steps to overcome the addiction of mike. I also listen to All the other reaction videos of other people, reacting to Dream Theater here on UA-cam. I love watching the person reacting, eyes PoP out of the head. The expressions are usually a numb look.....followed by, "Are you fuckin* kiddin* me.??" Keep up the good work. You appear to be a pretty cool dude.
But I think above all, the thing I find the most fascinating is what their name means
Jamel, thanks for taking them for a spin. I enjoyed watching
Both parts of "In the Presence of Enemies"!!!
It's like a spring coming unwound at 15:26 , really cool " resolve " from the tension of the previous key.
My all time favorite band and one of my all time favorite songs!!
The best reaction ever, keep the dream alive!!
I saw these guys do the warm-up performance for Yes in 2001 or '02. Wow! Blew me away!
One of their finest songs and albums. This and Train of Thought are some of my top albums of all time.
Dark Eternal Night - Dream Theater
Megadeth:
Holy Wars
Hangar 18
Symphony of Destruction
You went from the doggy paddle to an Olympic swimmer. You’re truly working now brother! This is musicianship at it’s finest
Oh dang... you took my advice on this one! LOVE IT!
My mans has Lowkey been a proghead this whole time haha
Honor thy father is next. Best breakdown ever
I’ve never heard anything close to Dream Theater! Insane music in so many ways. Nothing like it!
First song in the 12 step suite about the drummers recovery from alcoholisme. Great listen all the way through!
One of their best songs!
That intro is sound of rain
Intro of the glass prison (1st song of six degrees of inner turbulence album) is the same with outro of scene nine: finally free (the last song from metropolis pt.
Keep doing what you do!🤘
HONEST reactions! love your channel
I love the reaction, the music still blows my mind as a long time dream theater fan. My only gripe is your commentary during videos. There are things going on here as a musician myself, I am constantly figuring out. If I made videos like this, I'd listen completely then give my commentary.
We need more of this band. Fucking outstanding
Hey there Jamal ! That intro riff is face melting ! Enjoy !
How? Mostly How? Incredible.. the sheer speed and flawless performance.. every damned time.
You should listen to the other end of the Dream Theater spectrum. Take Away My Pain is a really beautifully crafted song
Graeme Porter I couldn’t agree more. It’s my favorite DT album overall
@@graemeporter I personally loved the radio friendly songs Peruvian Skies, Anna Lee and Hollow Years lol
Dude you should react to "The best of times" by them
👍🏾
@@jamelakajamal that's one hell of a sad song. It was wrote by the drummer for his dad that passed away when they were making the album.
@@jamelakajamal You would appreciate QUEENSRYCHE's song BEST I CAN and EMPIRE.
@@JohnSmith-vx2vi Check out Danny Carey from tool.He is genius as well
You've stepped into the world of Dream Theater my friend!! Your life will never be the same. Check out Dark Eternal Night from Dream Theater and be blown away again!!
Sounds like you really like prog without knowing exactly what prog is. Dude needs to hear some porcupine tree or something! love the reactions
Siren is a sound effect. The song is about alcoholism and the glass prison is the bottle. Siren is just one of the fun results of it
Thank you for looking up the meaning of the song. This is really really personal and I would love to see you reacting to all of the songs. Two to go.
That wasn't a guitar that sounded like the 5-0. It was Jordan Rudess on keyboards.
All right mr. 10 seconds back Godsmack under your scars need to hear your review
I've been seeing them perform live since 1989
Excellent choice!
