I am a passionate music fan as well as an actively performing mobile DJ. I grew up on the progressive rock movement of the 70s and decided it's finally time to check out some modern prog!! Please join me on this journey and enjoy/discover along with me.

I will always remember the first time I heard this song. I was in the car on a family trip and we were just about to get on the ferry from Gothenburg, Sweden to Kiel, Germany. Me and my brother in the backseat when this song came on the radio. Glorious band I’m im still a fan. Saw the Images & Words tour live and last year in 2022 saw them on the “A view from the top of the world” tour. It’s never to late to be a Dream Theater fan bro 😊

You should check out "Sleeping Giant" and the Grammy winning "The Alien" from the latest album! They are the marquee prog metal masters and are on top of their game!
Mike Portnoy on the drums, James LaBrie on vocals, and John Petrucci guitar and John Myung on the bass.
Oh!! There's also their recent stuff like Distance Over Time and A View From the Top of the World. Believe me! Every single album from Dream Theater is amazing in their own ways. They also just won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for a song from the latter album mentioned above called The Alien. It's a phenomenal and epic track as well.
Lol, every album but one. The Astonishing is horrible. It's their Mr Roboto. But otherwise I agree.
@@boki1693 That's understandable but it's still better than most of the garbage in the music industry. I just kept an open mind to the direction they were taking on The Astonishing. I feel it's quite a brilliant concept album. If they had released it in the 70s they would be as popular as Queen or Rush.

saw them do this live way back in the day and note for note perfect, I was in the front row right in front of Petrucci (guitarist) got a high five from Portnoy (the drummer), and cause we got to the club they were playing so early, we met them when they were in the parking lot by their buses, and they invited us in for sound check. What a day and night. They played like a 3 hour set it was incredible.
"Very Rush like..." was when I knew I was going to dig your reaction.
One word, OCTAVARIUM
In 1992 I heard DT for the first time on a PHX radio station KUPD. The DJ announced it as: "If Metallica and Rush had a baby, it would be Dream Theater." So I listened and fell for the great sounds of both songs they had on the radio. Later I thought..."If Iron Maiden, and Rush had a baby..." The vocals and time changes were too hard for Metallica. :)
the iron maiden part is definitely true for their first album
There's so much epic greatness from Dream Theater to recommend. May I suggest Learning to Live next. It's like Steely Dan on steroids. 🤣🤣 There's also A Change of Seasons, Octavarium, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, In the Presence of Enemies Parts 1 and 2, Illumination Theory (live in Boston), Metropolis Part 2, and In the Name of God. Be prepared however. Dream Theater does explore some dark and heavy themes. But they do it with such brutal technicality that is beyond ridiculous. This includes the Alcoholics Anonymous suite which consists of 5 epic tracks over 5 albums. It includes:
1) The Glass Prison
2) This Dying Soul
3) The Root of All Evil
4) Repentance
5) The Shattered Fortress
You're in for 30 plus years of intensely epic music.
They are the MASTERS. This is just the tip…..try Octavarium. Strap in.
Hell's Kitchen / Lines in the Sand (combined) if you're into guitar. Great solo and complex play by Jon Petrucci.
Count of Tuscany for losing yourself in one of those many so well-told stories. Musically complex and multi-layered.
And ALL those below mentioned are worthy :)

They have a whole concept album called Metropolis Part 2, and the whole chorus/chord theme (?) of the album is the first verse riffs of Part 1. The song Home from that album is so very good, I'd love to watch you react to it. Many other gems in that album.
The singer’s name is James Labrie and he is still the current singer today
Really recommend At Wit's End from album Distance Over Time by Dream Theater.
As an even older music fan (My faves are Pink Floyd, Moody Blues and Jethro Tull) but I really liked Dream Theater for my first time listening to it. Oh and the Drummer and Vocals were:

i prefer rudess over moore.....and either of them over the other guy....cant even remember his name......that being said, i do like moores playing quite a lot. i just like rudess more.
I hated this at first I think because I had nothing to "grip" onto. Now I know all the sequences it's a really fun song for me.
Every DT fan has their favorite album and I like Train of Thought because most of it it very heavy metal and Petrucci's guitar drives so much of it. His song "As I Am" on that album is Petrucci's answer to the record company that wanted them to change their music to what was more popular.
Illumination Theory! Period.
Check out, “In the presence of enemies” part 1 and 2 together probably the best link between old prog and Dream Theater’s prog with some metal without being too much to spice it up a bit. Also check out The Neal Morse Band, similitud of a dream, The Great Adventure and the last one Innocence and Danger, Mike Portnoy ( Dream Theater’s pre 2009 drummer) plays and contributes to Neal Morse band, genius work and American pride like DT since most and better known prog bands are British ✌🏼

You jumped right into the deep end with one of their craziest songs, right next to the instruemental "The Dance of Eternity". They have more standard sounding stuff, and everything in between.

I love the musicians in this band, the singer not so much. 3 of these guys plus Tony Levin make Liquid Tension Experiment, check them out live, it’s great!

I also highly recommend their side-project: Liquid Tension Experiment (LTE). Songs like "when the water breaks" or "acid rain" are just great instrumental tracks. ^^

Drummer Mike Portnoy was heavily influenced by Rush, Genesis, etc. If you like early Genesis and Yes, etc, check out Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy in Transatlantic with Neal Morse of Spock's Beard, Roine Stolt of The Flower Kings, and Pete Trewavas of Marillion. Portnoy & Morse also play together in the Neal Morse Band and also in Flying Colors with Steve Morse of Deep Purple & Kansas, Dave LaRue of the Dixie Dregs, and Casey McPherson of Alpha Rev.

Exactly. I love Mike Mangini, he's a beast of a drummer, but in my opinion, DT hasn't been the same since the departure of Portnoy. Mangini doesn't write lyrics or contribute vocals. It's a different feel. Enjoyable but not the same. My opinion.

Start with "Arriving Somewhere but Not Here" and "Anesthetize" by Porcupine Tree, then "Drive Home" by Steven Wilson. Those are a few of my favorites.
Yah I kinda went from Rush and Yes straight to DT in terms of prog rock. There are a ton of great DT songs for you to react to :-)
"Modern prog", lol. DT started in 1985, and the song/album is from 92. thats 30 years ago, by the way. And how a "prog head" never heard any of dream theater is beyond me. A little doubt, but okay. It's like a metalhead that hasnt heard of Metallica.
Anyways, you got quite the journey to go through if this is the only thing you have heard of them. Fantastic band, fantastic music, for the most part. Mike Portnoy is the drummer as you probably know now, hehe. As a drummer myself he is probably my number one inspiration. Him leaving and Mike Mangini taking over kind of ruined dream theater for me. Mangini is technically superior and faster and all that but he's not a musician like Portnoy. It's never boring with Portnoy. He adds so much to the songs, without being too much. And the groove is something Mangini will never match. It's amazing how good mangini is and how.. static it all feels.
"Modern" does not mean new or current. It means in relation to classic from of the 60s-70s. Modern is anything after 1990. Thanks for the listen
The drummer’s name is Mike Portnoy. He also plays with Neal Morse, The Neal Morse Band, Transatlantic, Flying Colors, Sons Of Apollo, The Winery Dogs, OSI, and probably a few other bands that I forget or even I was not aware of lol.
Avenged Sevenfold, Adrenaline Mob, BPMD, Metal Allegiance, Liquid Tension Experiment, BigElf, Twisted Sister, John Petrucci, Yellow Matter Custard (Beatles tribute), Hammer Of The Gods (Led Zeppelin tribute), Cygnus And The Sea Monsters (Rush tribute), Amazing Journey (Who tribute), Morse, Portnoy and George, etc.
Great track, from a great album, by a great band. DT has earned their place at the top (as well as the number of tracks on the list). @@ophreacts214 I'd recommend Breaking all illusions next. Its from the first album with their new drummer, Mike Mangini. I think its DT's best album although its quite underrated by the fanbase. They are definitly influenced by bands like Rush and Metallica but their skill level is much greater in my opinion.
OPH, I second that recommendation for Breaking All Illusions. If you figure out a way to watch live concert videos (by limiting the size of the window or limiting the opacity), Breaking All Illusions from the Breaking The Fourth Wall concert Blu Ray in Boston is a great choice. Dream Theater are not just a bunch of Berkeley and Juilliard guys who are great studio musicians; they are amazing live, as well. Enjoy.
@@Heatwave9000 problem with that album the drums are not good. Cause Mike left and John had to come up with a lot of parts. It’s still good album.

This is very old DT stuff. They did so much better stuff since that time. Once you begin to dig into this band, this will occupy your minds on a permanent basis for many months if not years…. You should listen to the albums Scenes From A Memory and Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, their two best albums in my opinion. Octavarium was also a very good one.

Somehow I never saw this comment originally, but just saw it now. Easy. I explained in my first videos and in the description that I'm an OLD prog head. Grew up with the classics, but never, somehow, knew that anyone was making anything that was "prog" beyond the early or mid-80s. That's basically the whole POINT of my channel. It's relative. Compared to the "classic" prog era of the 60s-70s, this is "modern". Doesn't mean it's "new". Anything post 1990 is considered the modern prog era. Thanks for stopping by!
