The glass Prison is a bottle, this song is about alcoholism. Progressive music is about progress, advancing and trying new stuff by using different structures and patterns in the songs, distancing them from "common" music.
^What he said
To add to this, I feel like progressive rock defines a genre where each song progresses as it goes. It tells a story; not just basic 4/4 timing throughout..
I know I am quite off topic but does anyone know of a good place to stream new movies online ?
@Emilio Royce Flixportal xD
@Hugh Briggs Thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service :D I appreciate it !!
I can understand why a lot of people don't particularly like Dream Theater's style but no one can deny that the amount of talent and technicality in their music is basically unmatched by any single artist or band in metal, and that has been the case for years. I'm not their biggest fan but every time I hear a song or watch a live video I'm amazed.
They get to be 'a bit' too much. I remember listening to them a lot for about 5 years and suddenly pretty much stopped. To this day I can't listen to a whole album anymore and haven't checked much of what they released after 2003 or so. It's just exhausting. But yes, they are phenomenal musicians. Went to music school in the late 90's-early 00's, we were all very much into it.
Alot of people do like Dream Theater!
@@mejsjalv Some people have more basic music taste, simpler
Progressive or Prog rock/metal is characterized by intricate song structures with varying rhythms/time signatures and highly technical playing. Songs are often long and a blend of genres/influences are used. Opeth is my favorite prog metal band. Check out the song "Serenity Painted Death" by them.
This ⬆️
I rarely see Serentiy Painted Death requested. Its probably my favourite Opeth song. Top 3 anyways :p
this but I like DT more
Yes! Opeth! Serenity Painted Death! Gonna go listen to it after this reaction
Dream theatre is better chic🤙🏿😎🎸
This song is part 1 of 5 songs called the 12 Step Suite by former drummer Mike Portnoy. The 12 steps are for alchohol sobriety. Next song in the suite is This Dying Soul, another killer track
You guys should do the 5 songs as a weekly thing
Absolutely!
It's a brutal song
I did not know this! Thanks!
He's coming home 😍😍😍😍
John Petrucci is one of the best metal guitarist, it's amaizing what he can. All of them are actually on another level. I saw them live a couple of times, it's jaw dropping what they can.
He's one of the best guitarists period. His raw skill and incredible consistency is something even the best guitarists in the world aspire to have.
I totally agree
@@xravenx24fe Watch the John petrucci fake lesson videos so hilarious. I play at 5 million beats per minute
When John Petrucci finished playing one of the most complicated arpeggios on guitar, dude on the left said "did you hear that bass?"
Panic Attack - Dream Theater
Constant Motion - Dream Theater
Pull Me Under - Dream Theater
As I Am - Dream Theater
Metropolis Pt 1 - Dream Theater
LMFAO
The drummer is Mike Portnoy.... A legend of the drum kit.
He is also providing backing vocals
Nightwish might be known for their stellar vocalists, Dream Theater is known for having arguable the best 4 instrumentalists. John Pettruci (Guitar), John Myung (Bass), and Mike Portnoy (Drums) Attended the Berklee College of Music, while Jordan Rudess (Keyboard) attended Juilliard School of Music. So their skill and technical level is on another planet compared to anything mainstream. Their songs often feature longer instrumental sections as they often use their instruments to tell the story, not just the lyrics.
Some good recommendations for the next song would be Learning to Live and Breaking all Illusions. I would hold off on Metropolis Pt1 and The Dance of Eternity until you're a bit more use to their style. Many reactors who dive right into those songs are often put off by the songs as they're use to very progressive songs. Once you're use to the proggy songs, you should venture into the epics like A Change of Seasons, Octavarium, and The Count of Tuscany.
The first 3 members mentioned are all from Long Island NY. The guitar player and the bassists were H.S. friends from Kings Park Long Island towards the north eastern end. They met the drummer when they went to Berkley and were amazed to discover he is from Long Beach Long Island which is on the south shore like an hour away or so.
Tbh i wasnt introduced to progressive b4 i heards the Metropolis, but i was sucked right into it, so i dunno, it is not an "easy" music, but it is def one of their best perfomances
Learning to Live is amazing both instrumentally and lyrically.
good recommendation brother. Erotomania & the dance of eternity are just overwhelming for newbies.
they play this live without missing a note. true greatness
I remember back when I discovered I like these guys, someone played "A Change of Seasons" on a jukebox, and I kept going back to make sure it was the same song because it was over 23 minutes long! A few days later I had most of their albums, and a couple of their DVDs. The first time I saw the DVD, my brain almost exploded, and all I could do was laugh maniacally because it was something my mind just couldn't comprehend as reality!
I love it when laughter is the only option because your body just has to get out the emotion and it's laugh or cry. That's the mark of powerful music. I remember that's the reaction I had the first time I played music with a drummer. It was so intense compared to just me and a friend jamming on guitar in a garage that all I could do was laugh. It had to come out, it was just overwhelming.
dream theater definitely deserves a video sequence as well as Tool
Dream Theater is one of my all time favorite bands. I have seen them live! Their albums Awake and Images and Words are pure perfection. I recommend them. Thank you for the reaction! 🙏
Whoever recommended the Glass Prison hit the nail on the head for a first DT listen, nice one man and yeah they do absolutely kill it when they play live!! I've seen em twice, two of the most epic shows I've ever seen I could hardly think afterwards hahaha
*Question:* "How do you play the guitar like that?"
*Answer:* "John Motherf*ckin' Petrucci, that's how."
Edit: 7:15
Amen!
Well... If your a god, your a god ....
@@AnnWahlquist the bearded god.
@@AnnWahlquist do not compare John Petrucci to God. That is blasphemy. I mean, he's great and all but he will never be John Petrucci

YES! This song live is something else!
I'd just do the studio. Labrie sounds like crap in pretty much anything after 2009.
Train of Thought is their heaviest album. It's technically insanity will punch your heart out your back and shove it down your throat. Part two of The Glass Prison is on Train of Thought. It's called This Dying Soul. It's also heavy and technical beyond words can describe.
You must see them live… go see them in person. Pure talent…. Both versions!
Panic Attack - Dream Theater
Constant Motion - Dream Theater
Pull Me Under - Dream Theater
As I Am - Dream Theater
Metropolis Pt 1 - Dream Theater
Also Count of Tuscany and Trial of Tears
pale blue dot,s2n....
Y'all done opened another rabbit hole. Here we go.
Indeed....
Yes! one of my favorite metal bands. They've been at it for about 30 years.
30 years.... thats insane!
They are not a metal band they are something different
The most amazing thing about this band is their ability to play these songs live. It has to be experienced, and they're still kickin' it hard on tour. Watching Petrucci play makes my hands cramp.
I saw him in a G3 show with Satriani and Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions). It was such a big honor to see them live, especially Petrucci. Not from this world
Check out the drummer, guitarist and keyboards their other band liquid tension experiment and a song called acid rain
Yes to this...
Second this although I’d like to hear “when the water breaks” although it is very long!!!! But if you guys do this do the live in LA version of either song and you’ll be amazed!!!
LTE is very good, just know they do only instrumental music (no lyrics) just in case that matters.
Acid Rain is good, but Paradigm Shift is a bit more mind blowing because of the intro
@@progdrummer78 I used to pronounce the "g" in the word paradigm when I was younger. Should be spelled paradime, IMO. 😜
This was honestly one of your best reactions thus far. I love dream theatre, they're alot of fun to listen to. So many incredible songs, but my personal favourite, which is uncommon amongst most fans, is Stream of Consciousness. Please check it out!!
Crazy drum fill in the middle section
Jtrem08 not many people know that and I’ve talked too Jordan recently and they are just really humble musicians!!
I've heard once the definition that i liked. "Progs are scientists of metal" 😁🤘Metal geeks, if you like. They show you beauty of things you never knew to exist 😉
You guys have graduated to a new level of music. Glad you found stuff like this. There’s so many genres out there, stay thirsty and keep exploring ☺️👌🏻
Man you guys are doing Dream Theater now?? I'm so hypped seeing the video title, Glass Prison was the DT track i was eventually gonna use for patreon ;D
Beat you to it. Lol
Octavarium by them is crazy - 24 minutes long, it really does feel like five songs in one that just seamlessly transition from one to the other.
Dark Eternal Night is an awesome song; John Petrucci, their guitarist, calls it "the Five Guys of riffs" lmao.
Dream Theater's biggest song was probably "Pull Me Under" I highly recommend it
So, that "white noise" at the beginning of this track (which is the opening track to this album) is the sound hear at the END of their previous album's final track... So this song kind of continues from the previous Dream Theater release in a way. There's an actual musical term for this but I can't remember what it is.
...except it had nothing to do with this song lyrically or anything... completely different artistic ideas. That last album before this one BTW (called Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory) is KILLER from beginning to end. It's supposed to be one long story and one long song from start to finish (a.k.a. concept album) that you are supposed to hear from beginning to end to get get the most out of that album.
BUT! If you only hear ONE Dream Theater song from here on out, Please listen to
This song belongs to the 12 Step Suite written by Mike Portnoy, drummer of Dream Theater. The next song is This Dying Soul.
Nice video👍
I didn't realize I didn't see this reaction until today. So glad y'all got to Dream Theater! Glass Prison is part of 5 songs they made called the 12 step suite. They go through the 12 steps of AA. The next song in this suite is called This Dying Soul. Highly recommend y'all check it out.
This is one of my fav songs by DT. There's so many great ones by them, but Glass Prison just always stood out as one of my favs. Thanks for doing this one. One of my personal favs on live performances is a song called Acid Rain by Liquid Tension Experiment. LTE is 3 of the core members of DT (drummer, guitarist, keyboardist) that released a couple albums of solely instrumental songs. The bassist was swapped out for another fantastic player for the LTE projects, but the music still has the essence of DT. The Acid Rain performance is sooooooo crazy. Enjoy my dudes!
Their live shows are INCREDIBLE!
Guy's lovin' your work......good to see you've found Dream Theater,
You need to hear 'The Count of Tuscany' all 19 minutes & 15 seconds of it from their 2009 Album Black Clouds & Silver Linings
PANIC ATTACK! Thanks for this reaction, I just recently discovered you guys. Instant sub!
I have seen them live 5 times (it should be 6 if it wasn't for damn COVID!) and they have been pretty much flawless each time. Mike Portnoy, the drummer in this song and John Petrucci, the guitarist, look so comfortable playing you'd think it was easy! You should check out some of their live vids and see what I mean for yourself. They are virtuosos, highly skilled, highly talented and with a huge knowledge of musical theory behind them.
I would say progressive rock/metal is defined as technical and melodic. Arguable longer songs, a lot of solos, possibility to craftier creativity such as concept albums, time signature changes, tempo changes and a lot of genres incorporated or infused into the music. Progressive rock/metal (not to be confused with progressive house/trance, nor progrock for that matter) can be very mellow or heavy and it can vary within each song themselves. Chord progression and build ups are quite a big focus too. The musicians in these types of bands are typically extremely talented, to the extent they're portrayed as virtuoso musicians. You got one thing right though, yes, progressive rock/metal is the type of music you can actually FEEL. The Glass Prison is a great example of fundamental progressive metal that's quite rough, but it's merely scratching the surface of Dream Theater's portfolio. Keep on digging into Dream Theater and you'll find music never thought of before! 🤘
I come back and rewatch this alot. I sincerely hope John Petrucci is in your guitarists of the 90s or early 2000s contest when you do it. Most modern metal guitarists point to him as their influence
This was the first song I heard from DT back in the day!! DT is one of my favorite bands!! 🤘🏻
Dream Theater: Metropolis PT 1
One of the first DT songs I heard back in the 90's and I was hooked! They're amazing!
More Dream Theater guys.
The shattered fortress live version
A Nightmare to remember
Octavarium
The count of tuscany
The dark eternal night live version
Y'all really have to see their live videos to appreciate the talent from all the band members.....the collective talent is beyond reproach
Go back to their early classics.. like Pull Me Under.. Learning to Live.. or Lie..
Dream Theater!!
Still best DT album for me... SFAM is a close second though.
The overall production and guitar tones on that thing are T H I C C
Yes!!! - Caught in a Web, The Mirror, Lie!!!
A good live song would be "Dream Theater - The Dance Of Eternity [Breaking The Fourth Wall]
"
For a studio song I would go for "In the name of god"
One of the things to add to your "to do" list...a live version of pretty much any Dream Theater song. To help put into context what they are able to do live. There are some very interesting things to potentially watch for...when the keyboardist and guitarist are doing a call and response or playing the same thing at the same time...or when the guitarist and the bassist are playing the same thing at the same time. It's definitely fun to watch and to listen to.
Speaking of their live performance, in the intro and after the song was over, y'all mentioned how complex the song was and what a challenge it might be to perform live. I won't disagree with you. But, speaking of context, know that this would be one song of a 2.5+ hour concert. They're all like that in complexity...some more complex than others...some not.
As far as a live song recommendation, I could go pretty much anywhere...but, I wanted to make sure that the original drummer, Mike Portnoy, was in the video...along with the rest of the current lineup. "As I Am" (Live at Budokan) ua-cam.com/video/IIyoGPOwqLM/v-deo.html
And no, they didn't play every riff known to man in this song...the rest are in their other songs. :-)
I agree about not checking out any live performance that doesn't have Portnoy playing drums, but not because of Portnoy. James LaBrie, the lead singer, hasn't been the most consistent in their recent live performances. Anything from their Radio City Music Hall live show or earlier is fine.
Dream theater basically help my ADHD so much ,I love maths and I'll admit many of musicians go through a stage of wanting to quit when you realise we can't get to this level ,best concerts Ive ever seen dream theater ! I was turned on ,plus on speed so omg I remember it better haha ,love your vids!
Dream theater "As I Am"great song..
Welcome to the DT world my friends! A world you'll never be able to get out of!
I recommend you guys Metropolis part 2 the whole in on sit! Trust me.
"Did you hear that bass?"
Fans at every DT concert ever
Some of their best live work:
A Change of Seasons, live in 2000
To Live Forever, live in Tokyo
Trial of Tears, live from Breaking the Fourth Wall
Illumination Theory, live from the Boston Opera House
Lines In the Sand, live in Bucharest (John Petrucci's best guitar solo he ever played)
The guitarist's name is John Petrucci. He's a total beast on the guitar. but all of them in the band was superb musicians. arguably the best in each of their instruments. if you want to see their prowess live, I recommend reacting to "Instrumedley live by dream theater". it is an instrumental with sections of their songs. you'll see why they are the real deal
They're live performances are note for note, from the studio recordings. Their musical memory is amazing. You really need to WATCH the next song from a live performance to truly appreciate the musicianship from these guys. Anything from the live BluRay DVD Breaking the 4th Wall-Live from the Boston Opera House, is well worth the watch. Love Tool, but they can only dream of playing to the complex levels that these guys do. Cheers!
Y'all gotta check out the song "Pull Me Under" by them! That was my first introduction to DT years ago when I was in middle school, haha shit I'm old 😳 but anyways great reaction as always fellas! 🤘✌️
I believe that glass prison is the first of a series of songs that Mike portnoy, the greatest drummer ever, wrote.
The shattered fortress live at Boston opera House. There 5 members in dream theater john petrucci guitar john myung bass Jordan rudess keyboards James labrie vocals and currently Mike mangini drums was previously mike portnoy. Him and Danny carey of tool the my 2 favourite drummers and the best at there craft
Shattered Fortress live from the Boston Opera House (Breaking the Fourth Wall)
Imagine if you did 'Dance of Eternity' first 😄. Their catalogue is full with similar songs. And their live performances are as close to studio versions as possible.
It’s a song about AA. The first three words should be very familiar if you’ve ever been to an AA meeting or read the AA book. Cunning, baffling and powerful. It makes sense considering they’re rock stars and probably use to party real hard, but given they’re older now they’ve put that all behind them and focused on their music, and it definitely paid off. To me they’re the best band in the world. They all literally went to Berklee school of music in Boston so they’re super trained as far as writing music. Seen them live 6 times. Great every time. No one better live in my opinion
Prog Rock tells stories via songs about 8-? Minutes long or whole album. Examples of Prog rock bands: Pink Floyd, RUSH, Genesis,Yes, Triumvirat, Marillion... so many more
You want live?
Liquid Tension Experiment - When the water breaks. All the members of this band are in Dream Theater except the bass player.
Then there is the Epics, my personal favorite is
Dream Theater - Illumination Theory live in boston
Dream Theater - Breaking all illusions also live in boston
Dream Theater - Octivarium
17:35 15 years old me listening this album for the first time. Solid memories of that memorable saturday.
your reactions are always so genuine guys! love ya!!
These dudes have been around since 1988 and average releasing an album every 2 years or so. They are actually much bigger outside the USA than they are here. They have so many very good and very intricate songs it's hard to pick any one or ten. This song is one of their more complicated pieces but by no means is it an exception to what they can do. They also do some mellower songs that are actually very good as well. I would suggest something live by them so you can see their immense talent. They have plenty of live videos so you should have no problem finding something.
If you want DT live, watch their live version of Dance of Eternity, if you thought the time changes in this one was weird, you ain't seen nothing yet
Opeth - Ghost of Perdition
Another prog metal masterpiece.
Happy birthday Smokey!
They play that and then some, live. It’s an incredible experience.
This is the reaction I’ve been so excited to see y’all vibe too.
Progressive is usually identified by creative usage of time signatures and song compositions, usually influenced by classical compositions. Early Genesis, Pink Floyd, Rush, Dream Theater, Savatage, Tool and Opeth are solid examples of the genre.
And that is just the tip of the ice berg fellas. Welcome to Dream Theater. Stick around. They are the greatest.
13 songs, love it!! My favorite band!
So the reason the song started in white noise (actually a record spinning on its end loop) is that the previous album ended on that same sound (the record actually playing for a bit, then skipping to the end loop as its owner is presumably murdered). It also ended on the exact same note/chord that this album began with. Likewise, the album after this begins with exact same chord this album ends with. Dream Theater does a *lot* of stuff like that. There are always all sorts of little callbacks and musical quotations from their earlier stuff, and occasionally even musical foreshadowing for things they have in mind for the future.
This is just scratching the surface of the progressive metal world. There are so many amazing bands and musicians that are on their same level with amazing music.
The Glass Prison is the intro song to the 12 Step suite of alcoholism withdrawal by drummer Mike Portnoy. It would be cool if y'all react to entire the series in order --> This Dying Soul --> The Root of All evil --> Repentance --> Shattered Fortress. My favorite is the last 2.
Please guys, do Opeth - Blackwater Park song... Love your stuff.
Thanks bro and were on it
@@Hollywood6IX , thats why I love what You guys do. Seen Isis song and some others, that are some real underground stuff and won't pick many views, but You pick it up and react to that.. I fucking love this reaction. Just jaw dropped, all you can do is laugh because every second gets more amazing as you listen, relentless awe. What a perfect song to hear as your first intro to DT. That's how I feel every time, and I've been lucky enough to see them live four times.
Hey, great reaction! My suggestion for live performances of Dream Theater are "Change of Seasons" and "Learning to Live" from New York. Excellence introducing of this band on live version (with one and only Mike Portnoy on drums ! ) Greetings from Poland, stay safe! :)
Paul Bearer loves this young. Rest...In....Peace
What a genuine amazing listening sesh and reaction!
You’ve gotta listen to metropolis part 1 by this guys, one of my favorite songs
If you like DT then y'all need to try Rush. 90% of what DT does, Rush pretty much invented it!
You asked for a DT live suggestion: "Illumination Theory" from the Boston Opera House. They play with a full orchestra and choir. It's 29 minutes of sheer ecstasy!
Awesome reaction guys welcome to DT a band I ve loved for nearly 20 years. They have so many kick ass tunes, the live version of The shattered Fortress is solid or This Dying Soul. Huge respect guys 🤘
Having seen this very song performed live a couple times, I agree 100%...I never understood how they could do it (and this isn't even CLOSE to their longest song; they have a couple in the 23-minute range, and another around 42 minutes). Actually, true story, after a live concert in NYC at the end of August, 2000 (which was released on DVD as "Live Scenes from New York"), the drummer (Mike Portnoy) literally collapsed, seriously dehydrated (I think he needed IV fluids to recover). Dream Theater were known (at the time) for their 3 hour concerts...and that takes STAMINA man, nevermind the memorization required for all of the songs!
You guys are a pleasure to watch
The one who wrote the lyrics is the Drummer as well, Mike Portnoy
Technically considered Djent and not prog rock, but I highly, HIGHLY recommended CAFO by Animals As Leaders. It's a big hit within the technical metal/rock scene.
AAL is definitely prog
Cafo is a bad choice for a first listen, Tooth and Claw, Woven Web, Tempting Time and Wave of babies would be better choices.
Should always watch these guys live. The fact they can do it at studio quality live usually leaves me as a musician with my mouth involuntarily sagging open.
Please more dream theater! I’ve been watching for a while and have specifically liked your tool and Deftones reactions. Dream theater is one of my favorites. Throughout the years you have some very different sounds to explore from them. Maybe listen to octavarium, voices, or the ministry of lost souls
You’ve entered The Glass Prison. To escape, you must follow the path of the 12-Step Suite. Your next Dream Theater reaction will be This Dying Soul from the Train Of Thought album.
Love that you guys dug this song! My favorite band of all time.
Please do Instrumedley live at Budokan next, you guys will be blown away by how good Dream Theater is
Great reaction guys, love it when reactors have such an open mind to prog metal and can appreciate the musicianship. You should really react to them live. I recommend The Shattered Fortress live since it follows the same theme as this song or Illumination Theory if you're in for something longer and epic.
Welcome to the world of Dream Theater and progressive metal my dear gentlemen!
you guys are cool man, feeling the bliss i see
You guys wanna check out INSTRUMEDLEY live at budokan. A medley being literally several different songs, all instrumental crazyness, they pull it off like it's nothing.
Definitely watch Instrumendley live, that will completely blow you away. This is also the start of the 12 step suite which is a set of songs they wrote over the course of a few albums which you should react to in order, there are 4 more songs that are part of it, each from a different album.
Dream Theater - Instrumedly (live)
Is with Mike Portnoy (the drummer you're hearing here), who was not only the drummer but was an integral part of the arranging of the compositions. Portnoy departed from Dream Theater in 2010 after 25 years with them.
The crazy thing is this is just the tip of the iceberg. Dream Theater is something else 🔥
