My dad died when I was 17 - about 3 years before this episode aired - and it was an eerily similar situation for me. I found his body in his house, and he had died similarly, just very suddenly. It is remarkable how accurately they captured everything I felt on that day in real life. I'm glad I had a few years in between his death and this episode, because I think it would've been too traumatic for me if there hadn't been some passage of time. Such an authentic piece of art.

I just now (for god knows what reason because I was a teenager when the show was first on the air) finished my first rewatch and this was the exact moment that broke me. Something about that raw, unable to process what just happened, having no idea what to do in that moment, not even thinking yet about what to do afterward, or understanding that the world around you is still moving. Then Anya helming the next step of the process trying to understand how everyone but Joyce gets to have another fruit punch. Every bit of that is what I remember going through when I lost my father.

      @@jaredputnam3495 I concur, 100%.
I think I had seen the end of this episode when my mom died suddenly, (from a stroke. She was 68 and I was 28) but it wasn't until months later that I saw the whole episode, and yes, it encapsulates the whole experience.
You jump forward in time to the hospital, to a recovery that never happens, to future holidays that never happen. Later in the day, you find yourself thinking "my mom died today." It's all too surreal.

It's got a somewhat soapy drama to it with the love triangles and studly Angel, plus a female lead and there you go it's labeled a "girly show". It's why my dumb ass didn't watch it until it was off of TV, because I was dumb and young and thought the show was about relationships when it is SO much more.

I think it was brave to do an entire episode without music, and it so worked! In every way. I think this episode (The Body, S5), along with Season 4 'Hush' and Season 6 'Once more with Feeling' are stand alone episodes that no TV series could ever compete with. Well done to the cast and crew and to the writers. Masterpiece.

    • @hirovalentine3845
      @hirovalentine3845 7 років тому +27

I meant stand alone in the context, that they stand alone against the other TV shows. Not apart from the series itself otherwise there would be no continual arc in Hush, OMWF or Body... when all of them had story that continued for many episodes after ;)

yup that episode was powerful. I still remember sitting down on my couch hugging my pillow watching. Tears in my eyes when I realized Joyce had really passed.
There was no music or score throughout the whole thing and there was no opener. It hurt me so bad but the was it was done was so excellent. It seemed like it was filmed to give us that sense of heightened awareness...that only seems to happen when something like this happens. Things are slightly too bright, you can hear everything...like when Buffy could hear the children outside playing. It was an amazing episode.

Other losses are often melodramatic or part of the action. Despite its frequency, death had never been depicted like this and that's what makes it so great. This episode, in its direction, writing and cinematography (brilliant shots, lighting, excruciating pace) elevates the show into a whole new level of ambitious, anticipating the modern age of serious TV drama challenging feature films. Let's not even get into the acting; SMG is often quite melodramatic and whiny as Buffy (and not the highlight of the show), IMO, but here her performance is stellar. Mom? Mom? ...Mommy?
Now, there are other great episodes too. Sometimes you want action, or humour, or sentimental bombast, and there are brilliant episodes for all that. But as a show challenging not only its own limits but the (at time time) expectations for television itself, this really does stand out.
This is not "suddenly" one of the best Buffy episodes, anyhow. It has always featured in the standard lists of "top 10 Buffy episodes" or so. Along with Hush, Once More With Feeling, Becoming, The Wish etc. (I'm not listing my favorites here, mind, just the standard mentions.)
I suppose The Body appeals primarily to older fans who look for more than action, comedy and romance in the show, though.

The Body may just be the single greatest episode of television ever. It was heartbreaking and delivered in every way imaginable. That opening scene with Buffy finding Joyce on the couch and the phone call is devastating, Willow and Xander falling apart because Joyce was the loving parent to both of them in the absence of their own parents whom they never truly felt loved by, Giles feeling the loss of his surrogate daughters mother and feeling Buffy's pain and Dawn feeling true loss for the first time in her life was so well done it. But for me it was Emma Caulfield's speech about Joyce sying and her feeling grief for seemingly the first time by breaking down was the performance of the episode for me and she shoukd have been awarded an Emmy for that scene alone. The Body is truly a brilliant piece of television and one everyone should see.

I lost my mother very unexpectedly when I was only 25 years old. My mother wasn't old and she didn't have a disease. She went in for a simple surgical procedure and didn't make it. My first time really watching Buffy was on Netflix. This episode evoked such powerful emotions in me. I cried so hard, I had to pause the episode several times. I truly felt her pain and the entire scene was such an accurate portrayal of what it looks and feels like to lose a parent unexpectedly. I mean, even this video got me going all over again. Just the clips from that episode make my heart sting and my chest tighten. Such an underrated episode and television show. Buffy was known for action and comedy, but it didn't get nearly as much credit as it deserved for how they portrayed the drama.

When I watched this through the eyes of someone who have not yet experienced a loss, I cried but didnt think too much of it other than be amazed by BtVS casts' acting skills. Looking back when my father died a few years ago, the silence... almost nonchalant quality of the surrounding was very relatable. While he was in his last breaths, I was crying like crazy that time and I remember there was this crescendo of a classical music I wasnt able to recognized the title that kept playing inside my head making the moment more climatic. But afterwards, while we wait for my mother to settle the paper works with the hospital, the body to be transferred to the morgue then the funeral home, picking which coffin and room for the wake, etc...it was quiet and surreal. Like everybody around me were still in motion and busy and I was stuck in a limbo of being numb. My mother that time was like Buffy... doing all the tasks, greets the relatives and friends who visited the wake, etc and I didnt saw her shed a tear. But when the coffin was being lowered to the ground, I guess she let out all her pent up emotions and was crying hysterically. This episode and the one after where Dawn tried to raise her Mom from being dead truly resonates with me.

It destroyed me because our relationship had been a bit strained over the past couple years due to my own stupidity. So I was looking forward to mending that as I became a parent and she helped her baby figure out how to raise his baby. "I was drinking fruit punch, and then I realized Joyce wouldn't ever have fruit punch again, and Xander's crying," 100% a game changer. And the lack of music too, it instantly brought me back to the news of my dad's car accident.
And I was kind of like Willow too, I would put Disney movies on the living room t.v. and dressed up as the princesses, trying to make everyone feel better. My dad had gone to at least 5 different Disney stores to find me a Cinderella dress for my birthday 2 months prior, she was my favorite princess and I'd watch the movie with him every Sunday when he had a day off of work. Haha, I made myself cry. The first day is brutal, Whedon's totally right. Especially how Buffy had to go through all that, and still pull herself together and go to Dawn's school.

I first watched this episode 16 years ago, I'm a full grown man of 42 now and just watching this interview and clip has made my eyes well up.
i'm lucky enough to have not lost a parent yet but the first time I saw this episode I think I genuinely felt that grief, I remember it finishing and just feeling so hollow ....... Unbelievable episode.

This episode is amazing. I used to hate it and avoid watching it because it used to make me think about if my parents became ill.
However, when my father became ill, although all of my friends and family had been affected, we each felt so isolated.
I actually watched these episodes to try and gain some sense of comfort, understanding and defeat isolation. This episode is powerful and it helped me through one of the hardest times in my life.
To think it was made around 19years ago/20 years ago and it still helps people today. Great achievement. Thank you

Thank you Joss. Thank you to the cast. You captured a moment that everyone on earth will experience in some form or another, and gave it form, and seeing it really did help me grieve and accept what happened when my mom passed away. As sad as death is, there is a beauty in our loss and poetry in our emotions.

That seriously took me as a shockwave, then again I knew that she wasn't answering so something was up. I cried my eyes out. I thought that the series wasn't going to bring out a major character death because I thought the characters were an indestructible team. I see so many anime shows with characters that don't die as often and are strong in that sense, this brings me back to reality and the fact that strong people stay but they don't stay forever.

After 17 years, that last scene with Buffy killing the vampire, having a moment of content and peace with a half smile, than sitting up to Dawn is the best scene. Still chills my spine when she asks 'Where did she go?'
As cold as death, that's what that was.

Incredible episode. Still hard to get through because it's so real. Such a talented group of actors, writers, the lighting was even different and added to the story. Not in that way where background music tells you how to feel - which is so annoying and I don't remember ever happening on BtVS, it just added a layer of realness. Wonderful show and series.

For me “The body” will always be one of the most real and saddest episodes ever. And I agree about Anyas monologue I did not cry seeing Joyce dead (which surprised me) but when I heard Anya asking why Joyce can’t just come back I started bawling. It’s such a beautiful episode

This is one of my favorite episodes not just from Buffy but of any series I’ve watched! I felt the emotions from the cast this episode hit me hard. It was just so well done! It was definitely the lack of music that made it so real we don’t get dramatic piano music when we find a family member passed away, so this really sent a feeling of loss and grief straight in my spirit whenever I watch it :/

Xavier Rose 3 year old comment, but I wonder if this episode inspired the direction of the Red Wedding game of thrones episode - that episode’s shocking twist happens and then the end credits are just silence, none of the usual music. It’s so effective and well executed

I started watching the show about six months ago, and when i came to this episode, my mom had just passed away a couple of weeks before. I dont know if the episode helped me or not, but i almost didnt do anything else but cry for two days after seeing it.
Its one of the best written episodes of any series i have ever seen. It really captures the feeling of emptiness and being lost, when someone loses a person they are that close to. The silence is what i remember the most from that episode. The feeling of isolation. Its masterfully done.
Maybe the episode helped me in that way that it made me let out some of the feelings i had. I remember crying so much that i almost threw up.
My mom has now been dead for a little over four months, and its still really really hard. I still cry from time to time, but it does gets easier, too.

Joyce was literally one of the best moms in TV history. She embodied everything a mother was, and should be. Compassionate, loving, understanding, and kind. When she died, I broke down and cried so hard. She was a true hero on that show, just like the rest of the gang.
