  • Chalcedony is often formed in the seams, cracks, crevices and cavities of volcanic rock. In this video we find creamy, purplish, chalcedony that formed in this manner creating gorgeous agates. Hiking to the very source, we find beautiful examples of this seam agate.
    At the end of the day, we build a fire and quote poetry from Robert Service, choosing for this evening The Shooting Of Dan McGrew. Fireside Poetry.
    Topics Covered in this video:
    Rockhounding for Agate
    Rockhounding for Chalcedony
    How Agates and Chalcedony are often formed in volcanic rock
    Rockhounding Southern Utah
    Rockhounding Utah

    I love Robert Service’s poetry. I memorized “The Cremation of Sam McGee” in 8th grade and can still recite it. Great poem and presentation!

      That’s awesome you can still recite it! I first memorized “The Cremation of Sam McGee” in the 10th grade. But I have to refresh my memory from time to time to be able to recite it off the cuff. I too love Robert Service. “The Spell of the Yukon” is another of his that I memorized and really like. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

    Running several tumblers at a time is not ridiculous. I tumble 300lbs at a time. Keep the tumblers going!

    The Chalcedony you showed is so beautiful! There's Chalcedony then there is your Utah Chalcedony that takes it up a notch and raises the bar on the appreciation of Chalcedony. It reminds me of the Aurora Borealis finish that is coated on Swarovski Crystals, that iridescent angelic look on some. Your Rockhound Poetry is an unexpected pleasure to listen to and find myself not wanting the poem to end. The Ghost Tree on top of your Mountain is artistically beautiful. I love old trees that fight to live on like that. They are nature sculptures to me. Thanks again Lance! ~*

      Thanks ever so much. Jan! Agree with you 100% on the old dead tree. I marvel at trees like that. How they fight to live where the wind is hot and water scarce and soil ever so thin. They are an example to us wimpy humans! Live on, Tree! Live on!

    Great presentation, Lance. Really moving poem-you brought us there… the bitter cold, the rustic saloon. Can’t wait to see you return with your chisel and hammer to unearth that beauty on the ridge.

    Rocks are gorgeous looking, I love Chalcedony! We found an area around moab that have great pieces. I don't think it ridiculous you running all those tumblers. I do the same thing! Lol...I built a two level homemade tumbler machine. I run four 3lb, two 12 pound, & one 6 pound barrels in mine. And might add a 3rd level sometime in the future.
    I just sent you an email on this video & hope you received it. Thanks again!

    Hey Lance and Shadow, thanks again for another enjoyable adventure. Great job! You know, I've spent some time wondering around the cinder cones near Veyo and others on Hwy 18 but never found any nice specimens to collect... I often wonder why there's limited pickings at the actual source of rock formation. Any thoughts?

    • @adventuresofshadowdog
      @adventuresofshadowdog  6 місяців тому

      I have thoughts, but I can’t promise they’re correct! lol. I have never found anything of interest near the Veyo Volcano or the Santa Clara Volcano (top of Snow Canyon). But I have found lots of good material out further. I “think” there are two things going on. One is that there were several periods of volcanic activity. The newest being Veyo, Santa Clara, etc. But the good stuff is where the older activity took place. And two, geothermal activity needs to take place and that is more site specific. Does that make sense? Feel free to disagree or add your own thoughts. Thanks for leaving such an excellent question!
