You did an excellent video on explaining the process. I have a 99 Explorer 5.0 with 251K miles. Four months ago I replaced the radiator and thermostat. Last month I replaced the A/C compressor and accumulator/dryer. I may have a small coolant leak which may be coming from either the water pump or timing cover gasket. It isn't enough to have me replace the pump just yet. I put some K-Seal in the recovery tank and I haven't had any more leaks. I may be on borrowed time but your video and others including the Explorer Forums have provided enough info and with my mechanical aptitude and a mean set of tools should be able to handle the water pump replacement.

How is she holding up? I was watching a episode of Roadkill last night and they give high praise for k-seal.

There shouldn't be any coolant leaks associated with the timing cover.

Will someone PLEASE tell me how to release the wires..I have tried to disconnect them many time but I can't figure it out!

I am not sure how to help without access to showing you with a part. Do you have a pick n pull or some other serve yourself dismantler close by? The one close to me only cost $1.00 to get in. I would suggest that you go there and find an explorer or mountaineer to check out. The vehicles are typically pretty high off the ground and will give you good access to see what is going on. Perhaps there will be one that has had the engine removed and you can see the wiring harness to understand how it clips together.
It really should be pretty simple. I haven't gone back and looked at the video but I think you can tell it really was pretty simple to disconnect.
      God luck.

The bolt that got stuck (also got stuck on mine) is one of three identical bolts among the nine. You get ONE of that type in the Dorman kit #23744. IMO those are a design defect or they were improperly manufactured. Two of mine, the two closest to the power steering pump, were in rough shape. I chose the worst of the two and replaced it.

I need your help I have the same truck and broke the head off of one bolt and destroyed the other that was giving me trouble the rest came off just fine but now I can't get the water pump to come off how can I or what should i do i have tapped on it no movement at all, so does it need to be pulled straight out?

Hello John. I am not sure I understand your notes. Have you broken the heads off of two bolts or just the one? In the case that you have broken the head off of both, then you should be able to get the WP off. You will just need to either really give it the full beans with a big friggin hammer to break it free and / or get a drift (or a screw driver that you don't mind sacrificing) and work it as a wedge between the WP and block. However, be very mindful that while you can beat the snot out of the WP as it is getting replaced anyway, you do not want to mar or gouge the block. If you still have a bolt that has a head on it that is stripped, the most probable and fastest way to get it off is to cut it off (mini-cutoff wheel) or grind the head down, which would take forever. You can try one of the universal extractors that fits over the stripped head. I've not had much luck with them. I would just use lot of heat and try to work it free if that is the path you want to take.
      Good luck.

This was supposed to be an instruction video on a water pump not on how to live your life . . . We get it things happen and might take longer and do you really need to tell us not to block in our other vehicles.... if we need someone to tell us that this video wouldn't help and we would all be doomed.

Thanks for your feedback. Here is a little more information. I shot this intro after doing the repair. What the video does not capture is how many hours it took to save one bolt. Therefore, that was burnt into my thoughts. I think that mentioning that this project could go sideways in a big way is a great piece of information. It is not uncommon for these bolt to seize and snap. In that case you are dead in the water and the extraction process is arduous. For those that are not as experienced as you, they might not have the forethought to keep other vehicles clear or consider having a back up plan. Besides not liking the introduction, did you find the rest of the video helpful?

@@therankinfiles8956 of course he wouldn't come back and say the rest of the video help..he just wants to come on a helpful video and be a troll... That being said, how did you end up saving that bolt after many hours..I've got one that snapped off and another that is starting to round off that I'm fearful it's going to break if I keep at it..thanks
