Omg wish I could send you some $ I’ve had to change water pump 3 times in 2 years and no stores have the renter tools in stock you just saved my life from a stressful day thanks man
@@NORTAH85 , It is a two piece fan shroud. I own a 2002 Tahoe, Add to that I have been a professional technician since 1981 . I don't know what you mean that it is a one piece shroud .
Use a good C clamp if you have one instead of vice grips on that pulley. Put it around the diameter of the pulley. Otherwise great video. I came here to confirm it wasn’t reverse thread and your video did the trick!
Thank you thank you thank you for posting this video!!! I made the mistake of removing water pump with fan and clutch together. I later realized that I had to remove the fan BEFORE removing the pump. by placing the water pump on my bench vise grip and using the the tools you mentioned, i was able to remove the fan. once again...thank you.
Just leave the fan belt on next time put the wrench around the fan clutch nut and just hammer it easiest way I've done those, fan belt helps and then just tap the wrench with hammer
Every video I found so far, including this one, has skipped right over all the other important stuff involved with doing the job. Those of us who are completely ignorant to auto mechanics need that info.
Y’all never tried smacking a big wrench with a hammer? With the belt on, long open end wrench and hold some tension on it then smack with hammer. It works
i used a doubled up coat hanger... thread it threw one of the holes in the pulley then threw one of the holes in the power steering pump pulley.... tried it single first and the co;at hanger broke, doubled it up and it held.
The 6.0 LQ9 doesn’t come equipped with a fan clutch. What else would cause over heating, water pump and thermostat has been replaced, no coolant leaks. both electric fans work, but the temp goes from 195-220 no higher than that any suggestions.
I'm a mechanic, Just did a 03 astro van 4.3. Water pump, fan clutch would NOT break loose. Threw my impact hammer and tool with my torches on it would NOT Budge. So had too ( saw zaw ) it off. NEVER had one as stubborn as that one!! After it was off, my 1/2 drive snap-on impact barely back it off!! Crazy. So morale of story sometimes they won't come off!!
Did that vehicle ever have any front end damage i bought a chevy express years ago i think like a 08 or something at salvage auction from copart & it had front end damage & cracked a few of the plastic fan blades & that thing was a son or mother truckin sucker to get off i think i finally was able to heat it & get it off but was a pain in the ass.
@@EverydayImTECHnIt don't know? It Was a customer's van !! Everything was intact. But man. What a bit#h!! I was killing too much time on it, so no choice!! Usually with the impact too , it takes longer to assemble the tool than to zap it off. Lol.
When I saw the size of the threads on the new water pump I knew it was going to be fun getting that off. Pointless overkill fastener for just a fan. The old design this replaced was much better/sensible
Didn’t work for me and vice grips left scuff marks but I probly just didn’t get it 100 percent my vice grips I couldn’t get them tight enough maybe.. or last person who changed the clutch tightened it way to much.. that thing is on there tight!
Sorry it wasn't able to help I'm sure that's probably what happened someone must have tighten the shit out of it LOL!!!! Also help to have good pair of vice grips some won't work as well as other's for doin this also. I would try heating up nut with mini propane tank deal like what you use to sweat chopper or soldier chopper pipe etc to heat nut/metal it expands then comes right off not sure if I said that in video can't rember if I did that or not or mentioned it if I did then disregard cuz u already saw that info in video LOL those fans can kinda be a bit of a b**ch to get off at times. GOOD LUCK!!!!
First off never work at night and second if you're already DIY'ing it and saving money then you might as well get the right tools for the job. Just my opinion and I've learned the hard way.
Help Question I replace the clutch and the water pump and the fan is spinning slow and the water pump is not spinning, van overheat quick not even 3 minutes because fan not spinning fast and water pump is not working, the water won't circulate to the radiador and don't know why ,
So i can put some heat on it huh i can get it off now I'm worryed getting the seal to hot it's on there pretty good 4 ft cheter pipe didnt get it hardest one yet cant c where did u clamp vise grip on pully itself
Using the special tool, that is the 2 piece set, seemed easier for me to do. The 1 piece special tool sucks. I was able to remove and replace both the clutch and pump in 6 hours. That was my second time doing it on my vehicle.
TOOL SHOWN IN VIDEO To Remove Fan Clutch Without Using Special Tool Linked Below amzn.to/3feN710 Or Use SPECIAL FAN CLUTCH REMOVAL TOOL Linked Below amzn.to/39wH050
Air hammer with a flat head tip and zap that fucking bolt on the corner and boom it's off wont hurt the bolt puts a small mar in it takes 4 secs to get the blade off worked in a junk yard pulling motors that's how we do it
Next time take the garud off and do it during the day so someone can see something, just a little feedback from a viewer, not trying to dog u out bc those types of things are a real pain, I'm in the middle of it right now. Thank u.
Honestly, always loved driving gm, never owned one or worked on them too much, drive old Ford, and God am I ever happy. Like for WHAT effin reason does gm needs special tools for EVERYTHING? Wanna change ps pump? SUCK it bruh. Good job at micky mousing it, but still, just pita
Omg wish I could send you some $ I’ve had to change water pump 3 times in 2 years and no stores have the renter tools in stock you just saved my life from a stressful day thanks man
Glad i could help you avoid a stressful day
Is it because the miles or did you just get the knock off pump?
You saved me a lot of time. Thank you for posting this!
Glad to hear the video helped!!!
Your pipe wrench looks like a crescent wrench to me. Good video explains a lot.
😂
It’s a pipe wrench because he uses his giant pipe on it. 🤷♂️
It's actually an adjustable wrench. Crescent is a brand.
The other "pliers" are channel lock btw
Much more room to work , if you remove upper fan shroud .
4 plastic push pins and 2 10mm screws .
Unfortunately the “ upper fan shroud” is connected to the “lower fan shroud” thus making it “fan shroud”
@@NORTAH85 ,
It is a two piece fan shroud.
I own a 2002 Tahoe,
Add to that I have been a professional technician since 1981 .
I don't know what you mean that it is a one piece shroud .
Shroud all in the way I can't work like that
its a 2 piece shroud, 4 push pins, and 2 screws and the top section of that shroud is out and out of the way.
Comes out in one piece if you wiggle it right
Use a good C clamp if you have one instead of vice grips on that pulley. Put it around the diameter of the pulley. Otherwise great video. I came here to confirm it wasn’t reverse thread and your video did the trick!
Same...didn't want to be tightening it.
Of course I was trying to tighten it,lol
his "pipe wrench" is and adjustable wrench also known as a crescent wrench in the south
We call it a crescent in the north too
This video is worth it's weight in gold. Took me one minute man I appreciate this wish I could like it 1000 times💯💯
Thx's glad it helped!!!
The amount of advertisements in the video is ridiculous
Dude. Thank you. I’ve spent hours trying to get mine off and this worked in 30 seconds. Thank you.
Best videos are filmed in the dark of night😁👍👍

Thanks for this video, I’m rebuilding 6.0L motor for a Camaro and I had it off in 5 minutes after watching your video.
this is great advise if our are replacing the water pump, I'm a mechanic my self learning but this will help my out so much in the future
Just leave the fan belt on next time put the wrench around the fan clutch nut and just hammer it easiest way I've done those, fan belt helps and then just tap the wrench with hammer
My dumb ass took the fan off the clutch 🤣🤣🤣😂
Will this method damage the new water pump pulley when installing clutch fan with new pump
Hey thanks dude. Do not have the tool. Need that fan removed. Didn’t know where to start. U did it. Thanks dude
Glad to hear it helped thanks for feedback!!!
first video I found with actual mechanic asdivse this is great! awesome technic with using the pliers on the vise grips!
If you don’t have the locking pliers you can also use a strap wrench. They are very cheap and at most auto parts stores.
Every video I found so far, including this one, has skipped right over all the other important stuff involved with doing the job. Those of us who are completely ignorant to auto mechanics need that info.
That was very helpful thanks cause I'll be doing that work on my truck tomorrow both the water pump and fan clutch
ur a SAINT! went outside on my LS and it worked second try.
Thank you bro!!!!
Good idea man, just used your trick today and it worked for me! Thanks
Hell Ya
This worked for me, thank you so much from a gearhead to a gearhead....
You are a smart man wow I never thought I can do that
If you say so lol i'm glad i was able to help!!!
Y’all never tried smacking a big wrench with a hammer? With the belt on, long open end wrench and hold some tension on it then smack with hammer. It works
major help! popped the sucker loose before the video was over. thanks
I tought you had to turn it clockwise nvm then lol thx man you’re vid helped out a lot
i used a doubled up coat hanger... thread it threw one of the holes in the pulley then threw one of the holes in the power steering pump pulley.... tried it single first and the co;at hanger broke, doubled it up and it held.
the vice grips worked perfect to get the fan off my 2010 Dodge Nitro. Thank you
Thanks for the tip. Worked like a charm!
Glad to hear it helped
I keep everything together & put a big Crescent Wrench on it, then pop it hard once with a hammer.
That's Always done the trick for me.
The link for "tool used in video" 🤣🤣 thanks for the laugh, good vid man. 👍👍
Best vid i seen yet thanks keep up the good work!!!
Great video. But sadly don't have grip pliers that have that angle like yours. So still need a special tool.
you will fuck up the pulley and the water pump doing that
i have never had that issue but the reason i was removing it was to replace water pump anyway.
Shout out to all the scars from plastic fans blades
Absolute lifesaver of a video! The Chevy engineers must’ve been smoking some good shit when they came up with this one..
The 6.0 LQ9 doesn’t come equipped with a fan clutch. What else would cause over heating, water pump and thermostat has been replaced, no coolant leaks. both electric fans work, but the temp goes from 195-220 no higher than that any suggestions.
GM engines tend to run hot for emissions reasons. Those temps actually sound normal.
I hear the gauge is also inaccurate

thank you just saved my life, on a hard day greetings from Mexico City my Friend
Thanks bud. That was a long way around the barn.
Great idea, is it the same for putting it back on?
Best video out there on how to do this, thanks~~~~~!!!
Very clever putting that pipe costume on your Cresent wrench making it a polish-ed pipe wrench.
I know what a Cresent wrench is det dee dee but im watching a vid how to take a fan off det dee dee😂
Does it come out with the fan shroud still on there? Not sure it would be very helpful to remove it but not be able to get it out.
Work like a charm! Thank you!
Glad It Helped & Worked!!!
Will a service engine soon light come in if the fan clutch is not working?
Help
Question I replace the clutch and the water pump and the fan is spinning slow and the water pump is not spinning, van overheat quick not even 3 minutes because fan not spinning fast and water pump is not working, the water won't circulate to the radiador and don't know why ,
Put your fan belt back on.
Very clever to put on that pipe costume on that crescent wrench turning it into a polish-ed pipe wrench
You have to position your cameras on a spot for steadilyness

If u do it without holding the pulley and it turns will that mess it up sounds like ain’t compression when I did in accident

It worked!! Took me 3 min to take it off (motor was on a stand)

Or Use SPECIAL FAN CLUTCH REMOVAL TOOL Linked Below
amzn.to/39wH050
Yes it may be useful as believe it or not there are no bolts whatsoever on fan clutch assembly. So special tool i just bough is useless.
I mean sure that's helpful if you're fanclutch pulls has space to fit the vibe grips into or behind.
Mine doesn't, so this doesnt help
Worked perfectly
Good to hear glad it helped!!!!
Lol! I removed my water pump with the fan and everything! Was lot easier out of the vehicle. Was removing water pump anyway.
This was very helpful, thank you very much tho! Love it
If my fan spins counter clockwise does that mean I unscrew righty loosey?
Yes
Your fan goes clockwise so you unscrew the fan left loosey right?
Yes
Great advise
So glad you're not my helper, thanks for the vid though
Thank you!!!
Help me out alot appreciate the information
Thanks very much
Did you have to take the hose off?
Excelent information, thanks.
You can also just remove the water pump which is usually the only reason to take fan off . Put the fan clutch in a table vise an bam take it off
Fo sho vise grips / table vise whatever floats your boat!!! LOL
Thanks man. Helped me out a lot A
Also that propane thing for soldering copper pipes is called a torch.
No its not its a crack lighter🎉
What are you putting vice grips on
The black deal the belt slips around to turn the fan. Hope that helps
Thank you this helped a lot
Ik how to take off a fan clutch but does anyone know how to take off a fan from the originally clutch so you can still reuse it?
I just did this job with a large crescent wrench and a screwdriver. Easier than what you're doing. Faster also.
Thanks bud
Starts at 2:38 🤦🏿♂️
Goodness gracious how many times are you going to mention there's a special tool? Stopped the video half way through and was already up to 6 times.
great adviuse
I'm sick of UA-cam commercials destroying what was once a great community. Now every posting has been turned into a parasitic opportunity. BITCHUTE!
Wait your doing this with the fan cover on 🤔
Thank you it helped

What size adjustable wrench is that
I would say medium to large size lol definitely not huge but not really a small one either like medium size
So yea put this thing here and hold there then yea push on this and yea that's it easy peazy

Lefty loosely righty tighty
cool trick
Use pipe wrench whack it hard it will come off 👍🏻
