It is easier to leave the belt on before you loosen the fan clutch, it helps hold the water pump pulley in place, but if you have special tools it would not really matter, for us backyard guys, it helps.
I cannot believe a shop quoted one of my students $3000.00 to do that. That's way easier than on that same block in ANY of the Vics or Marquis I've owned!

You need to specify that this is the 5.0L V8. I have an 01 Explorer with the 4.0 V6 and my water pump is different.

It's amazing none of the bolts snapped. What kind of thread sealant?
Is it OK to use a little flexseal to stick gasket on water pump?
Did all that and didn't replace a $6 hose?...
