    That chatter sound is when the spool shaft starts to hammer around inside of the loose CZBushing. First of the cast the momentum and balance keeps it "floating" almost, then as it slows the spool shaft is hammering around in there bouncing around.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому +3

      +Daniel Dean that is 100% exactly my thought

    • @littlegoobie
      @littlegoobie 6 років тому +1

      The "floating" part you're talking about is probably the spool whine and the chatter at high speeds, then turns into a rattle as it slows down. ...like anything on a spindle that's rattling in a loose tolerance and sped up.

    • @logicalrationalfishing7481
      @logicalrationalfishing7481 6 років тому +2

      Yes that sounds better put. In a bearing supported reel, even though the weight of the bearings doesn't really affect the spool much, they work as a tighter tolerance piece that helps translate the momentum at a much smoother, less rattling motion.
      Come to think of it, I am gonna tell everyone to buy them where I will have the better reels and catch more fish. I'm starting to not wanna share secrets when morons down here will eat a 5lb female during the spawn.

    • @littlegoobie
      @littlegoobie 6 років тому +1

      therein lies the problem of plastics. If this tolerance isn't lost in slight deformations (same reason glass lenses are optically superior to plastic eyeglass lenses - tightening frame flexes them), it is lost during physical stresses of fighting a fish which is why 99% of reels worth using have metal frames and metal drive side cover plates. and some will have metal palm side covers also.

    • @logicalrationalfishing7481
      @logicalrationalfishing7481 6 років тому

      For this reason, I think the new Bantam MGL Shimano reel on the way will be awesome. Its whole body is aluminum and there isn't really a non handle sideplate, only a cover that frees the spool (closer in diameter to the spool's size, way smaller than a full sideplate). The SV103 had an aluminum sideplate and was legendary, my old Tatula Type R (big one) has an aluminum sideplate and it is extremely tough. My Zillion's and most others now only employ aluminum for the frame; both sideplate's are carbon or composite.

    To you guys saying "who reels like that" or "he's reeling in to aggressive on the reel" haven't been fishing long enough! If your pitching out a jig to a spot and you miss the hook set and you wanna pitch back asap what do you do??? You reel back as fast and as aggressively as you can to pitch back right! That's what he's doing! He's showing you what the reel can and can't handle! I'm glad I passed on this reel and bought a Curado K. I knew from the start this reel wouldn't be all that! The older Shimano Bushing reel, look at where Shimano went with that!!! They stopped making it! Awesome video keep your reviews coming!

    I just bought the big one, the Z3. Very happy with it and have no problems with it nor the “problems” shown here. I have an Abu revo3 beast, toro 2 beast 50 and the Z3 for my swimbaits. Sold my Calcutta 400 after using the Abu. Brakes at max and tension too loose. I can make my 3 & $400 dollar reels do that. They’re only about $125 now.

    Saltwater fishing requires shielded / sealed ceramic bearings / stainless or marine bronze gears / sealed frames / sealed housing / sealed. Did I mention sealed ? A bearing less system w/ polymer will not corrode, but the compromise is quite obvious -- slop. Van Staal should design a low-profile saltwater baitcaster. Seigler SM "star mag" is probably the greatest conventional casting reel available. 40 lbs. drag, mag control, saltwater / surf specific and easily capable of handling inshore and offshore species.

    Out of all the videos I’ve watched about this reel, you are the first person to say anything about that noise. Wish I saw this before I bought it but I can say I bought mine for 89 bucks. For 89 bucks fishes fine but if I paid 200 I would be disappointed.

  • @otroflores91
    @otroflores91 11 місяців тому

    I bought one for $100 4-5 years ago. Still works and cast well enough for me. Bought it to use in the saltwater and it has exclusively been used for that. Don't have to worry about it getting wet in the kayak and is really lightweight for shore fishing. The finish sucks and it chipped and scratched easily.
    Does it match my tranx 200 , coastal SV, or lexas? No .
    End of the day I'm pleased with it and will use it till it breaks. Which might be sooner than later. Last night the clutch didn't want to engage sometimes with the handle.
    Same thing happened to my daiwa aird coastal 100 after 5 years of saltwater use. Wish they still made that reel or parts for it.

    The only advantage I see to bushings is for inshore guys and super cold weather which makes bearings move slower. For me, I live 8 hours from the ocean and it's warm pretty much all year so I'll take a curado 70 or 200 all day

    Using plastic bushings as a raceway for a metal part lol. 13 Fishing is the Apple of the fishing tackle world. That noise is the spool shaft jumping around in there because the tolerance is so loose. If they tightened up the tolerance the noise would be less but the bushing would wear down faster from contact and heat.

    When you tighten the spool tension knob, the slop goes away. Realized, it takes a few turns before it starts actually applying pressure.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому

      Adding spool tension will help rid of the knock of the spool and some of the slap between the spool shaft pin and pinion gear....But spool tension kills distance....and changes when you release your thumb off the spool casting lighter lures....If every one of my reels had no spool tensioner...and allowed for a slight bit of lateral play...I'd be perfectly happy :)
      I swapped the CZB bearings out for ball bearings earlier and the handle lean disappeared entirely. All it took was replacing one CZB at the base of the handle shaft exactly as I suspected....And the reel feels better than it did out of the box. I filmed 10x magnified up close footage showing how much slop there is between all the czb's and the part they support. The only way you could say this reel feels as refined as something from shimano or daiwa is if you fell asleep on your arm funny and started fishing while your arm was still numb....Like or hate shim/daiwa....they are in a different realm in terms of fit finish and feel. Sure there are duds...but overall...I don't think this reel is as special as the hype train conductors led people to believe

      would you mind sharing a link? The video review I watched...there's only music and no sounds of the reel....And for him to claim a 30 foot win for the Z.....that is without a doubt subjective and purposefully achieved. Sorry....but if i can take a 40$ reel and out cast it at over 250 feet....and he's throwing maybe 130 to 150....an extra 30 feet can be achieved by turning the brake on the lews and other reel up just 2 or 3 clicks...and you wouldn't be the wiser.
      You could also add a drop of oil to the spool bearings and slow them down massively (oil acts as a brake if too much is added)

    You’re critique of 13 fishing is spot on. I have 3 inceptions. They are the same way, loose. I also have a curado i and k models. I know they cost $50 more but they are much tighter and refined reels. They never chatter on retrieve. My inceptions do. Also the paint on my inceptions handles start to chip under the nuts. The only thing on my shimano is the brakes in the i need to be cleaned and lubed twice a year. But I fish a lot so that’s kind of expected. Not to mention my curado out cast the inceptions even with boca ceramics. Good reviews. Piss the haters.

    I was just about to purchase this reel today but wanted to get an honest opinion on the Z before making the purchase. I have read and seen a lot of "marketing" videos. I fell into the "I must have that reel" feeling. I really don't need another reel, I just want the newest evolution in reels, I guess........ I think I will hold off until 13 Fishing refine the reel a bit more and stick with my Lews for now. A lot of other similar comments at Tackle Warehouse convinced me that the "chatter" could be annoying and lets face it, you have to LOVE your reel in order enjoy your day on the water.

  • @nikitakozlov8380

    0:45 that could also be the spool pin against the "pinion grooves". when the distance between the pinion grooves is machined too wide due to poor quality control the pin just tilts forwards and backward on retrieve. I have a chinese replica of the old zillion 100 with the magforce V- it has that issue. Bought it for 22 Eur in the winter time for capital upgrading, to keep the hands busy. There is no easy way to fix that. But if it's the handle play or knob play, a spacer or two is all you need. But I guess the word of the guy holding the reel is on top.

    • @TackleAdvisors

      I thought initially in the vid it could be that. Which is why i tightened the tensioner. And it still persisted. Its a combination of things. The reel is and forever will be rickety since all the bushing tolerances are awful. But it's a tank of a reel. Probably the most indestructible reel in the low profile game today.

    I was going to pick one up because I am a sucker for that color, however, after a lot of research, its basically using a sleeve bearing instead of ball bearings. I'm not an engineer, but have dealt with fans and sleeve bearings are usually the solution for lower costs. Why? Its a not precision part when compared to ball bearings. Without going on and on, just google the differences between sleeve and ball bearings, you'll never want a sleeve bearing in a reel. If the reel was < 50.00, that's fine, 200.00? Look at a Concept A or a ONE3 if you want a 13 reel.

    my tatula type R does the same thing. but it doesn't happen when I reel at a reasonable fishing pace. Fishing reels aren't meant to be reeled that quickly. I bet if you fish it: Cast, retrieve, and catch a fish. The noise wont happen. Unless you have to reel in very quickly. :)

      The handle lean and the spool slop are part of the design. That's what was causing the clack sound....under load and stead retrieve i'd hear it....the casting is just flat out noisy. In a heavy wind 20 feet away the buzz can be heard loudly.
      no way around it. I replaced a czb bushing with a bearing at the base of the handle and it made a noticeable difference. I wasn't over exxagerating anything in the vid. I'm workin on the review now after putting tons of time on it. Stick with your tat R

    I purchased one based on all the hype...and that I got 20% off and a $20 rewards card coupon from Dick's sporting goods...my reel is silent no issues...no vibrations, no no clacking and screeching...i dont see any increase in casting distance at all...but it does a very good job against backlashes ...i like the color. I only paid $140 with free shipping so im pleased overall with it...but will i buy another for $200? Nope ...but would for lets say $125. ...otherwise i'd buy a 2nd hand used shimano Antares reel on ebay from a Japanese seller for $100-$125 and get a much better reel for the money (I purchased 4 Antares this way and love them)

    That noise would get on my nerves. If anyone nearby was using it and making all that noise I would get up and move my boat someplace else. If you're on the back of my boat making all that noise I would give you two choices change your reel or swim back.

    It's a shame because I was excited about the reliability of that new " space age bushing" . It sounds like they need to put a little more effort into the build. I cancelled mine and decided on the Metanium.

    I'm still on the fence about returning mine and getting the tatula sv for the same price. The reel was delivered to my house when it was less than 20 degrees and upon getting it out of the package it sounded awful. Line guide noise, spool play, handle play, and just about everything you mentioned except without casting. After it warmed up inside the noises weren't as intense but still worse than some of my quantum , daiwas and Abu reels. The reel does palm nicely though and the grips are comfortable but that's about all good I can say at this point. There is still part of me that wants to give it a chance.

  • @littlegoobie

    I'm a brackish guy like the other post below and I said i would buy them IFF it had full coverage for durability in salt and silty glacier water and got no response. I can tell the difference in my reels after just a few days of use pulling blades, i don't think a plastic bushing would do well. My gear is mostly mid to high dollar daiwa and shimano (USDM and JDM), but i do occasionally drift away to new brands when something interesting comes along. My latest venture last season was finally trying Lew's reels and i was impressed. I went with the superduty speed spools, normal and wide spool on them.

    • @ZZMOKIN
      @ZZMOKIN 6 років тому

      Same here with the more expensive reels but use the cheaper ones for the punishment of travel. That Lews SD Speed Spool with close to 200 hours of ripping big chopper lures has developed some wobble but still does the job. The regular speed spool combos for under 200 are a great bang for the buck.

    • @littlegoobie
      @littlegoobie 6 років тому

      I don't have that many hours on mine yet and can tell with 100% certainty that they are not as gliding smooth during retrieve as the first day i took them out.. I chose that model because it has a metal frame where many of the others are plastic. I don't like how plastic frame reels flex and wobble in the hand under heavy load. Anybody who claims they don't are catching small fish. :D

    • @ZZMOKIN
      @ZZMOKIN 6 років тому

      Agreed on the metal frame reels, my favorite low profile is the Antares HG, heavier but you can feel the quality. I have the ported Yumeya spool, haven't even put line on the stock spool and it spoils you for anything else but it's still fun to feel the different products.

    • @littlegoobie
      @littlegoobie 6 років тому

      my all time favorite low profile isn't even expensive, it's the old daiwa supertuned TD-A. I still have 4 or 5 of them, bought as they were discontinued, but i don't use them because i'll cry when they're gone. hehe. I also liked most of the zillions from about 10+ years ago when a lot of models were only JDM and then you threw on i'ze and megabass parts. Then i got into the smaller round reels which are so nice but not as palmable. (like the 50/51 shimano's, 100 size daiwa's). Although shimano's work well, i always appreciated the all machined bar stock construction of daiwas and felt cheated when i opened up a shimano with all their stamped parts.

    • @ZZMOKIN
      @ZZMOKIN 6 років тому

      Other than some salt water reels, the Antares is one that I love to use because it feels so solid compared to the lighter reels. My saltwater arsenal has some of the all machined reels, beautiful hunks of metal. The Shimano Ocea Calcutta jigging reel is a smaller one that is just a work of art compared to the plastic stuff, although on a long week trip of casting everyday for 11 or 12 hours you do appreciate the featherweights.

    Ok, I agree with you 100% on the hype surrounding this reel. Surprised it was so loud on the cast but the retrieve really floored me. I normally fish Shimano and Daiwa and all of my reels sound better than this one. Hell, I even have 20 year old Calcutta's that sound better. I picked up and played with $99 Shimano Casitas and it sounded better! It should sound better and have better tolerances for $200. Will stick with Shimano and Daiwa. I followed your replies on the reel test and felt you were giving some good feedback on his testing and your honest opinion. Surprised he cut you off. Your jab at him with this video had me laughing pretty good.. Anyway, really like the straight forward opinions on all of the reels you tear down and discuss. I know that there is a bunch of hype and i am skeptical however the beauty in what this reel represents is in longevity and minimal maintenance. It should match or be close to the curado at first and degrade slower in harsh salt water conditions. It is for this reason that i am interested but only real time will tell for these answers. Bearings will degrade quickly kayak fishing in the gulf. Thanks for giving it hell though. We need more thorough reviews like yours.

Not sure if you got a lemon, but that one you have definitely isn't like the one I got... If I was you I'd take that thing back and exchange it.. @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому +4

      Sorry. You can think that. But you'd be incorrect. I can make any reel chatter like that....By reeling like a chimpanzee. But it happens even if I don't. I just had it apart. And compared the bushing tolerances to bearing tolerances of a 1979 shimano bantam 100, A 30 year old Penn Jig Master, a 40$ kastking, a quantum accurist etc. I then grabbed a Steez SV TWS, ANtares, Aldebaran and Abugarcia MGX...and made them clack by reeling like said chimp... Every single one of the CZB bushings throughout the entire reel have gaps between the surfaces they support that are not there at all whatsoever in any of the other reels. I replaced the CZB bushing with ball bearings and it no longer is as rickety and the handle lean is now gone. As far as casting distance claims made by the 13 fishing sponsored individuals....A 40$ reel cast further.

    I am just so glad that I didn't buy one. My original plan was to try out the cheaper Origin C then followed by the Concept Z when is out. Well, I already didn't like the Origin C because of 2 issues: 1) similarly very noisy on the cast and 2) lacks torque on the retrieve even for the 6.6:1. My experience with the 13 brand to date is they make things that look good and try to get you to commit. And I fell for it with the Origin C as I thought it looked cool with the matte white paint job, at least on camera. Even at $99, the user experience is just not good enough. You can now get a brand new Daiwa Tatula CT from eBay for $90 and I can promise you that reel is light years better than the Origin C. Do yourselves a favour, get a 13 Fishing cap, T-shirt or any apparel item by all means, but if you are talking about reels, spend your hard-earned cash on a proper brand that makes fishing reels, aka Shimano and Daiwa. Talking of which, the $200 I have saved (by not buying the Concept Z) will now go towards the brand new 2018 Daiwa Ryoga that I am going to buy when it comes out in March. So happy that I didn't waste that money.

      Honestly it shouldn't change much being a "space age polymer" bushing. You'd see more temperature shrink in a metal ball bearing and metal components than plastics and polymers in the cold. Plastics don't conduct heat as well meaning they don't cool to ambient temperatures like metal objects do..... Just my knowledge of science and my two cents so take it for what its worth. 😂

I don't think any reel you buy today will be willed to a third generation unless you go really high end. Quality has taken a nosedive across the board but no doubt these chinese reels are subpar in the mid range market and every bit as expensive. The marketing people don't want reels that last because you don't buy more if they never fail. People make fun of me using old reels, but I prefer what has proven itself over the test of time. Flashy colors and gimmicks don't score any points with me.

Then, when the 2014 Stingray was announced I got one of the first ones; red, they didn't have THAT orange. Loved it but still no bright orange. On the fence for the new ZR1 - WAY overkill for the street but bright orange. IMO the cheap Lew's Orange Crush combo is damn pretty, I picked up the green Speed Spool combo last year for a throwdown just because it was such good bang for the buck. Try one out, very smooth with click stops, good line capacity. I've abused a Super Duty Speed Spool for prob 200 hours with heavy woodchoppers on Brazil trips and a bit of slop now but it still works fine.

    I had a couple of Zillion Crazy Crankers that had that rickety sound on retrieve. Interestingly, it seemed to go away when retrieving with load. It was totally that back and forth play though that was causing it regularly. That back and forth is in every single baitcaster. To some extent. But it doesn't always show up. If you read my impressions on tackle tour. I think it has to do with the sloppy tolerance in the bushing at the base of the handle. And the handle lean allows for a inconsistant grip of the antirervers clutch. Which allows it to slip in and out. SO you get the handle lean and the in an out. Today I cast a 40$ reel and a 500$ reel doing the same thing...And i didn't experience that sloppyness

      Tackle Advisors even if the performance isn’t great it’s one of the most hyped up and popular reels ever so I guess it’s good for collecting

      LOL....did you get it yet? Does it have any handle wiggle....Not the in and out...But rocks.

      Tackle Advisors YES it does at first I didn’t even notice it as soon as I got it I spooled it up with line and took it straight to the yard but after I casted I couldn’t help but notice the loud knocking of it

    I tested one out myself and had no issues this video shows the inconsistency of 13 fishing reels and until they get high quality gears in a sturdy build I don’t think I’ll be buying any more

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 років тому +1

      I don't think there is anything wrong with the gears. The sloppy handle i believe has to do with the bushing in the base of the handle shaft. The tolerances aren't very tight. And it allows teh handle to rock a bit. And it shows up as a clunky retrieve.

      Tackle Advisors I was referring to the concept a which I believe uses the same gears as the z which seems to just drop off dramatically in about 3 months

      Ahhh...gotcha. One of these days i'm gonna have to get a 13 and okuma apart next to one another. I really want to see if they're gears are the same or different.

      Tackle Advisors if I had to guess I’d say yes if not they are damn similar, Okuma Helios wore out after about 3 months of big fish. It’s a shame really

      I took apart Lews and they're the same as abu low profiles. There are too many identical parts and machining profiles to be a mere coincidence. weird springy brake mechanism held on the spool with 3 phillips screws, the same spool shaft machining, same driveside spool side profile, an oiling port cover in same location held on with a screw in the same shape notch cast into the aluminum frame, same plastic spacers on the ends of the line pawl

    Dayum that's how my chronarch ci4+ sounded like after a hard backlash..... never was the same again. Heard they said some of the ci4+ had problems. So upgraded to a jdm metanium dc..... best ever.

      TA can fix it. I love my Curados, i and two Ks and three Metanium HGs and fortunately have never had a hiccup with any of them. Yeah it's heavier but the Antares HG is a pleasure to fish also. Now if they only came in orange - I really do like that color.

    My hope is that I'll be able to use this reel for more than 4-5 saltwater trips without having to replace bearings like I do on every single Shimano that I own. I'll take plastic bearings over the crap that Shimano puts in their reels any day.

      Review? where? It was an hour on a casting field. And a discussion. Hence the title. I was trying to see if 13's claims of 20% distance gains are true....And they aren't even close.

    All these people saying that you and lots of other people are getting dud reels trying to justify it blows my mind. I know all reel companies have duds but its sounding like 13 has a lot of them. Especially when you pay $200 for a reel. I would send it back until I got a good one. Sucks to have to do that when you just spent $200 on a reel! Definitely lots of hype.

    I love how you don't sugar-coat anything. I happen to like my 13 Fishing reels (I own two) compared to my Lews and Ardent. However, this has to be one of the most gimmicky pieces of junk to come out in a long while. The fact you can "upgrade" ANY of their reels to be bearing-less means that all you're really paying extra for with this is the hideous orange colour. I'll stick with my Concept A thanks.

    I have some Oheros that I got off of Amazon for about $50-60 about 5-6 years ago they served me well.
    But I do believe it's just another rebrand hyped up name made in China out of Chineseium.
    But they did hold up well.
    This reel though some people are pissed at it looking at the recommended videos anyway.

    REVIEW UPDATE:
    I did hear back from Matt Baldwin via email. While I don’t 100% agree with everything he mentions (noisy casts from my current reels) I am willing to post what Matt suggests could be a potential fixes and some other things to consider. I appreciate his feedback and taking the time to add some more to the discussion.
    The CZBs are completely different, not something you are used to using, and not something you have ever experienced. You will hear a little noise on the cast, this is normal. Please compare this noise to your existing ball bearing reels. I think you might be surprised on how loud your normal reels are when casted. The major difference is with the retrieve, its dead silent on the Concept Z. The only thing you will hear is the line coming through the guides. Gone is the racket of the ball bearings. The noise is more acute in your mind, because otherwise the reel is so silent.
    I watched the attached video with the sound all the way up…and I don’t hear much. I’m not disputing your hearing a “whirring noise”, just disputing how loud it is. Its certainly possible that yours makes a “whirring noise” louder than normal, but I can’t tell that from the video and would be happy to take a look to confirm. I want to be sure your reel performs like it should. Additionally you adjust a Z a little different than most because of the consistency of the spin, you don’t need as much brake weight or cast-control cap. So loosen up the cap and set your brakes to 1-2 and let her rip!!!
    I think your missing the entire point of the Concept Z, as I don’t see much reference to it in the review. The Concept Z will without a doubt give you long ultra consistent casting. Test it against whatever you fish on 10 casts, if you can replicate the casting effort you will see the casts all fall in the exact same place. This won’t happen with your ball bearing reels because you can’t consistently get all the balls to start up movement consistently.(a little more lubricant on one ball, or a piece of debris as small as sand can keep that from being consistent) THIS article was from Chris Payne outdoors via Facebook

      Thank you so much! After seeing your casting the z3 in the snow, I decided to go with it for surf fishing here in California. The lightest bait I will be throwing is the LC flash minnow at 5/8 oz. I’m planning on spooling up daiwa j braid 50lb. Pairing with a 7’11 crankbait rod from irod. I should be receiving it tomorrow! I’ll post a video about it since I’m fishing Tuesday for surf perch. You think that setup will cast the Lc fine? I’ll be throwing bucktails too eventually for striper.

    Great review. If i were you i would try to get a new one cuz it is suppose to be silent. They have great customer service is what i hear. Dont personally have one. Gonna wait a while before i get one. And i have heard they have the same manufacturing plant as okuma too.
