  • Mercedes E Class Estate Turbo Diesel - Top Gear 1997 Jeremy Clarkson
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a range of executive cars manufactured by German automaker Mercedes-Benz in various engine and body configurations. Produced since 1953, the E-Class falls midrange in the Mercedes line-up, and has been marketed worldwide across five generations.
The W210 E-Class, launched in 1995, brought the line firmly into the upper end of the mid-size luxury market.

The W210 E-Class used to rust like a 70’s Lancia. Mercedes nearly went bankrupt due to warranty repairs. However the OM 606 Diesel engine was outstanding for reliability the 722.6 gearbox was also indestructible.

Another common issue was the glow plugs seizing in the head. This is basically guaranteed to happen if the glow plug is not coated in anti-seize before being installed. Not just the threads, but the whole length of the shaft. The aluminum head expands faster than the steal plugs, which allows carbon to build up between the two over time, eventually gluing the two parts together. This was such a common problem that Mercedes had to design a special tool for extracting them. You can do it without the tool though; I had to drill out four of them the last time I did a change.

We don't have rust problems in south balkan, except with the imported cars which were already rusty. So you get to see these w210 everywhere. Taxi are still driving them and most of them are in good shape, and after 1million kilometres on the clock. My father has 290 turbodiesel. It's bulletproof. Great cars.

w210 got some upgraded more powerful engines, and interior more modern and comfortable than w124. When it comes to looks/design on the oitside the w124 is much finer, while the w210 looks more boring, 'toyota', especially the estate version in the rear. But, of course, the car does a good job going from A to B, looks are not all) I am a w124 fan, owns a 300 turbo D, and will not thouch the w210, but would not mind have some more power like the newer models) But less power is no big issue. The w124 is much simpler and less expencive to maintain than the newer electronic cars, as long as one keep the corrosion in control

I have the '99 sedan version. OM606 is amazing, although the fuel economy isn't the best by modern standards. Mine is up to 318k miles and I've been driving it every day for 7 years. Few spots of rust, but nothing that goes past surface level. Car has several common issues though. The glow plugs like to seize in the head if you don't lubricate them when you put them in, and then you have to drill and extract them. Not a fun job, but I've done it. AC evaporator cores like to leak, and you have to remove the entire dashboard to replace them. This is a $2500 job at independent mechanics (never dared ask a dealer). Also if you don't catch the flex disks failing (or replace them with cheap off brands) on the driveshaft (every 100k miles) they will detonate like a grenade, which can send you to the hospital. A slightly less common problem is the fan clutch seizing up, which causes the fan to shatter at high engine RPMs and punch a hole in the radiator.
Basically its like any other old car; it will run as long as you are willing to dump time and money into it.

E300's OM606 is the mythological engine with more prowess than the m113 or m113K. It sounds like any diesel in idle, but a supra on full tap. It was safe for the time, but not by modern standards. From the crash test reports I've seen, you are basically guaranteed to have your legs broken by the pedals in any serious front end collision, as they were not designed to collapse on impact. Otherwise, I would just describe it as "ok" in terms of safety. No driver aids, automatic brakes, or any of the other safety systems found on modern cars. And there's been 20+ years for engineers to develop better crumple zones since it was produced.
Never had too much problem with rust on mine though, aside from some cosmetic stuff around the wheel wells. RWD is fun, and you can (mostly) turn the traction control off if you want to have some fun in a snowy parking lot. Fuel economy is acceptable so long as you replace every rubber hose under the hood every five or so years to keep all the diesel from leaking out.

I love mine (I have the '99 e300 sedan), but at this point it suffers from all the things that afflict any car that is over 20 years old. Every piece of rubber is rotted to hell (I had to replace every fuel line last year) and the interior is falling apart. A little bit of surface rust, but nothing too bad, probably because I live in the southern US. And the glow plugs; god the glow plugs. The damn things seize in the head every time if you don't lubricate them properly before installing them (this was not done at the factory, and most mechanics won't know about it either given the age and rarity of the vehicle). Sometimes they still seize, just because they feel like it. It'll run as long as I am willing to pump money into it, that I know for certain.

The strange thing about the terrible rust issues with them that you see in the UK don’t seem anywhere near as bad on the Continent.
I spend a lot of time in Southern France and you still completely rust-free ones there. But, at the moment I’m in Northern Germany and even here you see ones in great condition. The same goes for W202.
I can only think it must be down to the amount of salt on British roads? But why don’t the Germans do it…where they get more snow and ice?

From a mechanical standpoint (engines, transmissions, drivetrain, powertrain, etc), the W210 E-class was one of the most robust cars MB ever produced. Such a shameful waste that the rust-prone bodies of these cars tragically cut most of their lives short. Without the rust issues, all model variants of the W210 would easily be 500,000 mile cars...

My car does the same, and with petrol. Of course, I have rear cross-traffic monitoring and dynamic cruise control. Android Audio and Apple Car Play. I love to drive it. However, that 175 MPH top speed, though, I don't think my Camry will get that with just 203 HP under the hood.
