I bought the WORST generation E Class. But, is it actually bad?

First things first, don't panic. The Daimler is still here and getting it running will be the next video. We're just waiting on parts. In the meantime, I've bought a 2000 Mercedes-Benz E200. It is, according to many, the worst generation of E Class. But I don't see it that way. I see it as cheap luxury, and who doesn't like a bit of that? For £995, you've got to have a go, right?

A proud W210 owner. Try m112 or m113 engine with 5 speed automatic facelifted examples. Except rust issues they are quite bulletproof and comfortable. No need to worry about SBC brake, no problem in head gasket or degrading wiring harness, no worries in leaking air suspension, reliable 4matic, still high quality interior.

    Alright mate, here’s the dillio.
    1.
The rest button is to continue the AC or Heat after you’ve turned the engine off
    2.
The S and W switch is for standard and winter driving modes. W starts the vehicle in second gear to reduce slip on snow when taking off. Set the switch to S on the regular.
    Enjoy your 210 😊

Apart from the well known corrosion problems these are a very good car. Personally I think they drive better than the W124 with a much more modern feel. The 4 cylinder engines are super reliable as are the auto gearboxes.
Lots of online hate for these cars, lots of it from people who never owned or drove one.

Absolutely. They're used as taxis all over the middle east and they carry on with just basic maintenance for years. As personal transport the E320 is probably the best option with regards to economy, reliability, comfort and driving pleasure. The E420 V8 (and the venerable E55 AMG) are, of course, more desirable but only to those with unlimited budgets.

You are right, they are and were good cars, a pity about the rust, but all cars rust, some faster than others and in others you just don't always see it, other cars rot from the inside out. Nice car. A couple of things: The EC button on the climate control stands for Economy, that is the button that actually cuts off the AC. The rest button allows you to run the heater while the engine is off. The S mode in the transmission does not stand for Sport, but Standard. That is actually the mode you should be in most of the time. The other mode (W or E depending on the year) cuts out first gear, for wet surfaces. I find it's also useful for traffic jams. Saves you from the repeated 1st to 2nd shift when you get going 😅 I have a w203, which is the corresponding c class. I also think these cars are underrated. Sure the quality of the plastics took a bit of a dive compared to the previous generations, but mine has 400,000 km on it and it still runs great, is very comfortable and feels smooth as silk.

What a lovely looking example that is. Had 2 of these and both drove absolutely superb. Elegance much softer and more comfortable ride than the Avantgarde. One thing I would check though, as this happened to both of mine and a mate has just had same thing, is the front control arms/wishbones. They 'can' crack/corrode just where the balljoint attaches, which will cause balljoint to shear off. A quick Google may be an idea. Very much looking forward to seeing your progress with it.

@@mbz4652 Well I would say pre facelift as that's what I have lol. Though seriously, in England certainly, the face lift cars are the more rusty ones. I think this is due to the paint technology legislations changing around year 2000. My car has never had any welding done and has it's original spring perches too.
The facelift cars also have a larger screen in the dash (showing MPG etc - which pre facelift don't have) and this screen is also prone to failing. Mechanically they are the same however. Facelift come with the COMAND infotainment system as an option (older cars did not get this) but someone fitted this to my car more than 10 years ago so that is a bonus.
It's really what you prefer the look of, but most important is a car with as little corrosion as possible.

They share some parts too, and that same solidity you feel when driving. Yes, some of them rot, so do most cars from that era. 3 series and 5 series, and even the 7 series are serial rotters.
Paint issues abound from the use of eco friendly water based paints poorly applied and with shite QC. It's all fixable. Any part you can't be repainting immediately, just rub it over with ACF-50 and do it later. 🙂

Thanks for another great video!! Loved your presentation for "a misunderstood" Ε class! Some time ago, I read somewhere that there are about 1200 updates in this FL version of the w210 in compare with the first series.
On the Auto gear box, W stands for winter and starts the car in 2nd gear in case of ice or snow. S is for standard, which starts the car 1st gear. In W, the gear box & engine feels slower & smoother but gas consumption is lower than using it in S.
I replaced my 1999 w202 c180 with a low mileage 2000 w210 e200 kompressor auto, on April. As you said, you can buy a top of the line car for a descent amount of money if you can afford maintenance. I am very happy with it, it is very quiet, smooth, luxurious and have lots of extras that even keep up with modern standards. Rust is not an issue in Greece, where I live, because of the climate. Instead of buying a w211 I decided to go with the w210 and use the rest of the money for cruises & trips to enjoy the car. There hasn't been a single moment that I have regretted my decision. W210 feels very solid & well built in compare with the more modern w211. Consumption is almost the same (2.0 kompressor auto vs 1.8 kompressor auto), and parts are WAY cheaper and can be found literally EVERYWHERE.

People dump on this "vier-augen" E-Klasse all the time. They had weird body rust early on in the life cycle with bolt on bits doors and wings.. the shells themselves suffer the same galloping rot as most large german cars of the 90's.
These were absolutely everywhere they really took over the municipality of the W124 before it.. They really are like the Ford Crown Vic of Europe in that respect.
The armrest storage mysteries... The switch is the brake pedal switch (these fail and wont let you shift into D), The other 'bit; goes down between the seat and the center console (around the seat belt) its a little infill to stop your dropping stuff down beneath the seat.
And yes if you put something behind the E-brake release handle it will disable the ratchet on the e-brake and you can just use it as a little on the fly foot brake.
'Rest' will keep the heater running for 20mins or so after you stop the car.. so ideal if you are nipping into the supermarket in the winter and want to keep the cabin warm.

As you have said its just really nice to be driving something other than the humdrum mundane of new cars, it just nice to try and make the car the best version of itself and you dont have to spend a fortune doing this and you will end up with a really lovely car and it stands out simply because you just dont see them anymore. Keep up the fantastic work Mr P you really are an inspiration to more than you think.

Insane car to purchase. I know because I did the same. Oh man, they love injectors. I got the ginormous estate 7 seater E320. By the end of my ownership, I decided it was the best car a grand piano thief could ever hope to own. Loved it.

Engine wise it fits the same as the Vauxhall Carlton 4 cylinder engine, only they had a big fan cowling in front of it filling the gap.
The straight six lump looked a lot better.

The 200 is a bit weedy but at least you got the Elegance spec to help you enjoy such a rust free example. I drove a '99 E240 for a while while I waited for a new W211 in 2003 and whilst many knock the W210 it was the last E Class that had 'proper' comfy sprung seats, Mercedes dropped an enormous goolie by not carrying these over to the W211 and opted for dreadful foam filled excuses instead.

fun fact, its not sportmode, its either standard/summer or winter mode, the difference is that it either chooses first or second gear to start with, the winter mode starts with 2de gear to minimize the chance or spinning the wheel so you can get more traction

Great car and great video. My second Benz was a ‘95 W210 E250D, one of the first to be brought into the UK. Unfortunately when Merc built the first RHD 210s, they found the steering column got in the way of the turbo on the 5 pot diesels, so the first few were built as naturally aspirated examples, mine being one of them. As such, it was slow as cheese but simple, economical and bulletproof. I bought it at 120k and eventually it died at just shy of 300k, but only due to my ex wife breaking the ignition barrel by using the wrong key by mistake.
I loved that car and it made me a Benz fan for life. Many cars later, my current daily is a 2005 CLK 220CDI, probably the best of all the Mercs I’ve owned.

I've had a w210, w211, w212.. I must say that the 210 was the smoother car on the road, but it's not bulletproof at all, it has some serious rusting, automatic transmission and turbo problems, my pre facelift avantgarde w211 kompressor is by far the stronger one, never dissapointed me, never had major issues with it, it looks better, and it is better equipped interiorwise...

Great buy, looks like quite a solid example. I own a 1997 E230 and I absolutely love it. The base four cylinder W210 is very underrated as a car. Not the most powerful engine but it turns really well given there is very little weight over the front and it rides superbly. I did a buyer's guide on this and the four with few electronics is quite a decent buy. Some of the sixes can be troublesome and corrosion can be an issue especially on crash damaged cars. However, once your drive one and own one, it nowhere near the disaster it is made out to be, especially compared to many more modern offerings. If anything my W210 is making a lot of newer cars in my fleet and projects look quite ordinary in terms of value for money and reliability.

a C or E class from '97 to '99 with an I4 engine are super solid, they doesn't suffer from bad wiring harness like the older ones and the m111's are bullet proof just like the 722.6 trannies from those years. Just be careful to buy one that got the ATF fluid serviced like it should and it's not rotten, thankfully were I live (Spain) we don't have problems with rust on cars, so it's easy to get one rust free here. These cars are OLD but despite that, they are packed with ABS, BAS, ESP and more, the interior on these things are immortal high quality plastics, not hard cheap crap also the E class excelled safety ratings at the time (c class was ok-ish...), the only thing I don't like are the looks of the E, the C (and even better, a C estate) looks way better IMO.

I've found over the years...sellers are not completely forthcoming about issues or even potential issues....and that many of the used cars we have bought...mostly been neglected. Owners just didn't repair or fix issues...even small issues then snowballed from that point.
Sometimes we've had to take the time and do many of the minor things ourselves....and ended up having a decent running car!

Lasted me 3 yrs through school when I sold it for 2 grand and 246,000 Kms. Last I saw it was for sale again with 300 k

My family owned a 1996 E250D (Naturally aspirated) with 113hp snd it was a classic trim. It had leather seats and it was used as a taxi.
It was SLOW (0-100klm in 14seconds), had rust issues at some spots but until it's 18nth year (until 2014) it was reliable. We only had to replace the engine after 1,6million kilometers (or about 900.000miles) but beyond that it didn't show any issues at all. Even the shock absorbers were not replaced. The only thing that was serviced regularly were the ball joints (the major culprit for the w210 and w211 platform) ,the window regulators (they're made out of paper lol) and the climate switches (the round ones where they crack from too much heat).
Everything else worked flawlessly and despite the cracked paint, it just worked and kept going. ESPECIALLY the A/C. No modern car comes close to it's coldest air condition at all.

My first Mercedes was a C180 elegance, W202. I replaced it with a 2001 W208 CLK230 Kompressor, the coupe version of the W210.
A great car, but rust around the front suspension mountings killed it at 16 years old!
I replaced it with a W211 E320cdi sport, an excellent car which I still own, a 2006 model.

The Elegance is the best spec on these, the w210 has a bad reputation but I think they are fairly decent cars if it is rust free. The ride quality is smooth and they are nice to drive, the automatic transmissions are bulletproof, and the 230, 320, 430 and the rest of the V8 motors are good.

Enjoyed your video on the W210. I bought a '98 E320 on a whim about four years ago and I love it! It's one of the most underrated E-class models in the line up. It isn't as flashy as some or as sporty as some, but it rides and drives superbly and is one of the most comfortable Mercedes sedans you'll find. Now I want to hear more about that blue Jag sedan in the background!🙂
