My Experiment with some Papaya Plants. Can we Change a MALE into a FEMALE Plant ?

- There are three types of Papaya Plants. Some are male plants which do not bear any fruit at all. Some are female which bear fruits. Some are hermaphrodite in which flowers bear both male and female floral parts and they are self pollinated and also bear fruits. There are lots of videos available which claim that they can change the male plants to female plant so that they can bear fruits. Here an experiment has been conducted if their claims are right. However, finally it has come to the surface that their all claims are false and misleading. Thank you very much.

An advise to all who want to grow papaya trees, In my experience and research for many years I found The reason behind papaya getting male is that if a papaya plant is getting lots of nutrients/ fertilizer from age 2 month onwards 80% chances are that it will grow to be a male papaya, if you cut off some nutrients/ fertilizer from age 2 or even 3 months onward or even let it starve for a while ( but off course not to let it die) 80% chances are that you will get a female papaya tree. the key is to never over feed it, do not try to use fertilizer to make it grow faster. All the methods from cutting roots as in Thailand, pushing wood nails as in India or cutting the tree from base and covering it with plastic sheets to grow back in many branches as in Africa or plucking flowers twice or three times, are meant to disturb the growth of the plant to utilize the extra nutrients for healing and eventually starving and changing to female.

My experiment is a bit less invasive.I removed all the flowers from my male plant, they grew back again into male flowers,again I removed them but the second time female flowers...now it’s growing fruit...success

Here in Assam, we cut the top part of the male plant entirely.. then after the new branches come, female flower comes in them.. try it once Sir.

I am from Sri Lanka. I tried this on one male plant out of a lot of 10 plants. The other nine of them were fruiting at the time I tried this on the male tree by driving only two bamboo sticks through. Now less than in two months the treated tree is bearing fruit.
I had a similar situation. Male plant trunk was violated with sticks and we got lot of fruits. Don’t know how.

Nice one Melody Chest. I am no Doctor, but yours is the most intelligent response I read in this post. No need to hurt a male papaya tree. Do not stab it. Just nourish it and let it grow into a tall healthy papaya tree. In about a year you will be surprised how large the fruit it will bear. Your only problem will be how to harvest the large fruits without hurting yourself. Try this without torturing the male papaya tree.

i think by now u know how to avoid growing male papaya's, but for all who dont know...only use seeds from the bottom half of your ripen papaya plus put them in water and throw away the floating ones
Just use that as rootstock and doing grafting female top to the rootstock by bark grafting or just saw the top of the plant and wait for new bud to grow and do top grafting
we did to our papaya and it worked. we inserted the first peg 4inches above ground and the second peg 4 inches above that. it is important that the pegs were perpenicular 90° to the stem and to each other so they form a cross. it was giving fruit. you can try again i hope will work for you too.

Better to pull the papaya tree then cut the middle roots Then plant again and wait about 1yr hehe. See you around

Yes, Sir you are right. I too fell into such traps by some gardening UA-camrs. But the fact is that we cannot change a unisexual plant by using such measures, rather it will just cause pain to the plants. Try buying seeds of papaya plant which are gaurenteed to be female. The are costly though. After trying to plant female papaya plants in my plot for 7years, the only time I succeeded was by buying papaya seeds with female outcome.

hi sir surja i learned to my father bef. if you plant a seedling papaya make sure to check the roots if theres is a long root inthe center thats male papaya if you want to make it a female papaya just cut the long root in the center if the seedling dont have a long roots only at the sides sure thats a female papaya.

My papaya stem at middle of the plant seems to be bursting suggest me some remedy to save it. It bore good quality sweet red fruits. It's 8-10 feet tall now.
Don't buy fruit plant from nursery special papaya tree it's so easy to grow with in a year you get fruit,if you wants to buy,buy crafted plants which has growing fruits already.

I have tried it and my papaya tree started fruiting after about 2 and half months. And don't forget to remove the Male flowers when you do this.
@Nikita Vishwakarma take 2 round sticks. Make a point like a pencil at one end and hammer from about 1 and half feet from the ground from north to south. The second one from east to west about 6 to 8 inches above it. Try to poke it where the leaves had fallen. Or else I will send you a video on WhatsApp. Hopefully this will help you to get fruiting. Let me know if you need more advice.

if it grows any type of flower, it is already a female. How do you propose to keep other male plants pollen from contaminating? I would just graft a female cutting to it and strip the male counterparts after it propagates.

Whenn you knocked in a bamboo stick into the male papaya plant you did not hammer the bamboo stick deep enough so that the other end will come out of the papaya tree at the other end.

Though my comment is very late. I came across a Thailand video where gentleman cut the main long root while transplanting. It turned to female plant.

sir breaking the head works as well I have done it succesfully and the method you tried works but not by keeping the bamboo in the stem take a dagger insert it completely vertically and then bit up or for down with the same dagger doit vertically you don't have to keep any thing inside the plant like the bamboo I hope it will help you I have got successful result in both the method I am also a passionate gardener I experiment like you and help people thank you Arfan from Bangladesh

In seedlings stage you can keep under shade. However, once grown to a moderate size you have to keep them open under direct sunlight. Thanks.

These are only identifiable when they start flowering. That is why growers grow more plants as they can keep the fruiting one for final harvest.

It worked for me Doc. I remember my grandfather hammering a big nail in the trunk of the papaya when I was a young lad and I similated the same process 30 years later. It worked for me. I have photos and a video for evidence.
