Planting papaya is a circle of 6ft diameter works well. you can have 4-5 plants in that circle. in center of circle have a pit of 3ft diameter n 3ft depth and fill it with organic material to decompose, this will act as source of fertilizer for the plants. in the understorey once can grow ginger, turmeric, taro. In the same way one can have banana circle, just that one has to manage the new pups by transplanting.
Cut paw paw plant back and place empty can on top of stump. Tree will regrowth. Also bury a small chunk of concret/broken brick in with the plant for the lime.

Have you thought of pruning them. Top them off so to speak. The trunks will get thicker. And keeping it topped off it, will still grow but stay at a shorter height , so you can reach the fruit easier. A shorter papaya tree is not unheard of. It will make for a stronger tree.
We did get one comment earlier saying to do just that. I guess my only concern is that the fruits might not get as big but I’d be willing to experiment. 🤙🏽

Thanks for another great video! I have a concern and am wondering if you can shed any light. I am planning on moving over in April 2020. I stay with a friend in HPP when I visit and Papayas appear to ben in abundance there. His are on very tall trees but uses a picker to grab them and twist them off. I have looked for property between HPP and Fern Acres. It appears there is an elevation line that Papayas (and many other plants I want to grow) stop growing. I did not notice any Papayas on any of the properties I looked at in the higher elevation. Does that sound right to you? Please forgive my ignorance but I am just learning. Do you know your elevation? I have tried to find information online about what grows where but have not found anything specific as of yet. Again, thanks for all your videos. They are all so informative and entertaining at the same time. You two are adorable together.
The general rule here is that you can grow just about anything in this area under 1000ft. with the exception of a few things. That being said all of the same things including papaya may still grow above 1000ft but maybe not as good. The higher up the worse it gets. I don’t have an exact cut off point as to where they stop growing and it even gets more complicated with different microclimates, but I hope this somewhat answers your question. 😊

The soil in my yard is not very fertile, so what kind of fertilizer should i use to grow big papayas, besides using chicken manure which is quite expensive in my area - should i use general purpose fertilizer 16-16-16?
Hi Mike, this may be a late reply but an alternative is cow/horse/steer manure will also work. The biggest thing you can do for papaya is mulch heavily with organic matter (grass, bark, wood chips, leaves) as it breaks down it’ll make your soil fertile without the need for fertilizer. Also make sure the roots gets good drainage because their roots rots easily. Good luck!
Apparently I was wrong on the pruning. Apparently because they don’t grow lateral branches, papayas don’t take to pruning. What was suggested was grafting. In the case of needing a dwarf papaya. See MIgardener channel on this. Sorry I gave bad advice.

😄 you may have to water them if you have an extended drought. Lots of mulch covering the soil will help tremendously. We had one drought that lasted two months last year and everything survived without watering.

Homemade compost & manure is best
Mine froze back one year and changed its sex.
The chicken dance was amazing Pualina it needs to go viral. Lolz thank for the info on papayas. Why dont you guys try to grow mangosteen?
We have one mangosteen tree 😊
Perhaps you should consider growing the red lady or Dwarf Waimanalo varieties. Both have very low growing fruit. Seeds are inexpensive at ebay.
Nice! the height doesn’t really bother us but it would be great to grow more varieties 🤙🏽
👍👍💓
I love watching you videos as it reminds me of a holiday I had on the islands a few years ago 😍 I think I’ll adopt Paulina’s dance when my chickens cluck from now on 😁 After watching this video I am going to try and grow 3 papaya trees, I’m not sure how they will go as I live in South Australia, the summer gets very hot and dry, would I need to water it a lot to keep it alive?
😄 you may have to water them if you have an extended drought. Lots of mulch covering the soil will help tremendously. We had one drought that lasted two months last year and everything survived without watering.
Love the chicken dance...LOL
Hi, thank you ,I do learn a lot from your video but still no fixes my problem, please help me what to do, I planting about two months, I bought from a place, it looks like the leafs are burning with the sun the temperature is been between 60-70 san diego CA, I put an ombrella because the yellow leaf, I do noticed some new leaf growing on the trunk but the ones on top are dying, help please
Nice video. How long it would take before papaya to flower?
Maybe 4-6 months
@@OffGridHawaii Thank you !!
I love you two, you're so AWESOME, thank you very much for the tips on the Papayas, I have a large one, about 5 feet tall, but it desperately need a bigger pot or planted in the ground, the only thing a neighbor told me was to water it very much, now thanks to you guys I know a bit more and a second Papaya sprouted, but its a baby barely 12 inches tall. Uprated, subbed and so curious about your homestead, in particular if you could do a video about your Jackfruit trees! As for the Chicken Dance, totally IRIE and FUN, thanks again and greetings from Mexico! :)
New to your channel and love your all videos
Thanks so much 😊
Cant you make all plants female by trimming taproot of seedling before planting
I emailed you about some trees, great job on the vids
Stonnercat3?
@@OffGridHawaii yes, that's me
Thanks for the quick response 👍
the little red chilly peppers ,i want see them there, mine never produce fruit ,2 years from seed indoors and out ,what do you think wont work in michigan, got them from philippines
🤔 not sure ours got fruits pretty quick. Maybe try add a little phosphorus?
it's said that when you pull the young plants (4-5 inches tall) from dirt, if it has a long root stock, as opposed to a root bundle, it's a male, and do not replant it.
When your papayas are too tall air layer them so you can keep the rest of the tree top and air layer maybe 5 ft from the top and keep the goodness!
🤔 do you do this??
@@OffGridHawaii Yes I have done this he in TX it's easy try it out I hope it made cents. The reason I started doing this was cuz it was to high to reach so air layered and re planted about 5 ft of the mature top and wallah! 🤞👍
I’ve actually cut them down and buried them under mulch and they sprout up!
Wow, that faster then airlayering! I'm going to try. Hawaii weather is magical tho
You are the missing karate kid!
if your not fruitarian do you plan on growing the other foods you eat also? i feel like im going to go through the same thing lol.. growing and harvest beans and rice would suck so much tho..
Most of the food we eat from the land is root crops. Cassava, taro, and sweet potato 😊
OffGridHawaii oh ok cool do you judt eat it plain? How come fruitarian didnt work out? Thankyou :)
The cassava and taro I usually mash and the sweet potato I like to cut them Small and cook with a little olive oil. As for not being fruitarian I guess the short answer is it worked for us in many ways but not in every way.
@@OffGridHawaii i think mcdougall says oil is poison! oh so it worked.. but it didnt hahaha ;p how so? sorry for nagging lol :p
Have you seen Mcdougal lately? He has lost his mind! I wouldn’t listen to anything that guy says. Honestly I wouldn’t worry too much about why it didn’t work out for us because it was different for both of us, meaning it might be different for you or anyone else. The important thing is you listening to your own body and if something doesn’t feel right, don’t just keep blindly following that path. For both of us it was health concerns though, if that helps any.
you the best
I don't know if it's your papaya breed, but it seems like not enough sun (?) because it's growing tall and leaves are far apart.
I highly highly recommend ordering seeds from aloha seed...the genetics are incredible and you wont waste time with questionable genetics from fruit. We have dwarf trees with monster fruits.
Good to know!
Will they send seeds to The Gambia or UK?
How you guys doing today?
If God’s will I like to live in Hawaii so I could grow papayas and guavas I love Hawaii but I can’t afford to live there I wish I got enough money to buy house in Hawaii Island only God’s miracle that I am able to buy a house in Hawaii Island I always dream to live in Hawaii and grow lots of papaya and guava tree I love papaya I like to grow papaya it is nice to live in warm climate like Hawaii
In your video you said the flowers are male papaya flower and your correct. Male papaya flowers never grow into fruits so you should just discard it and regrow another papaya tree.
