    It makes me sad because Raleigh made a video and it had one of my videos in it. I was riding a pony and he reared and I pulled on his face by accident. She kept saying bad words at me and saying that I can't ride. I emailed her and asked her if she could take the video down and she said that I abused my pony and that I shouldn't ride in a bit (I use a loose ring, double broken) and everyone in the comments was saying stuff about me too. She said that a real rider wouldn't use bits and a horse wouldn't rear with a real rider. I know that she's wrong, but just seeing her say that and all the people in the comments agreeing with her really made me upset.

      Rose The Cat See, this is why I have such a problem with the way she does some things. That’s just bullying and it offers no education for anyone! The fact that she wouldn’t take it down, either, is really quite nasty. Everyone makes mistakes and when unexpected things happen, sometimes riders are caught by surprise and end up doing things like catching the mouth without meaning to (Raleigh did the same in the clips of Link rearing up on her). Really unfortunate that she did that to you.

      Rose The Cat We all have bad days with our riding and we shouldn't be judged just on those days, and having a bad day and making a mistake doesn't make you a bad rider or abusive. ❤

      Rose The Cat I am currently trying to tell people on her channel EXACTLY that. Obviously you didn't purposely pull on your horse. I don't understand how people don't see that she is a bully. I am sorry that happened to you. ❤

      Just remember we all have our bad days, and also remember in these clips Shelby has, anytime Raliegh's horse acts up ends up pulling on the horses face. It's a natural reaction to pull on the reins when something happens even if you don't mean to. Watch any of her videos and she's doing the same.

    I ride bitless, but I really couldn't care if other people ride in a bit or not as long as the horse it happy and comfortable there is nothing wrong, Raleigh is just giving people who ride bitless a bad name by picking holes in everything but her own riding and making out as if its a massive deal when it really isn't unless the horse is uncomfortable and annoyed with the bit.

    I never leave one of these videos of yours without learning something, this is why I’m subscribed to you and refuse to even give Raleigh my views any more. I would say that I hope Raleigh watches this, but honestly, she is so caught up in her own opinions that she isn’t able to accept an alternate point of view and would no doubt disagree with everything, no matter how many references you cite.

    • @HollyLenahanSJ
      @HollyLenahanSJ 6 років тому +40

      Also I’m really glad you talked about the effects of riding a horse in a hollow frame. I’m sick of people attacking riders if their horse dips behind the vertical every so often but riding horses with their head in the air and a hollow back is completely fine, when in reality, it’s actually much worse for the horse.

    I think Raleigh is the 'Tana Mongeau' of the Equestrian community- she uses the "let me say something shocking, let me be loud and obnoxious, let me exaggerate my stories" route to gain fame and boost her notoriety. I just think that she doesn't believe in what she says most of the time and just does things to get a reaction (good or bad) out of people.

      I would love it if she does, but she’ll look so bad doing it because Shelby has presented her side in a smart, calm and respectful way. The only thing she has to grasp onto as an argument is. that “oh that’s an old video/photo of me”, but that just reinforces Shelby argument that you can’t judge other people on their riding because you don’t know the context.

  • @Milestone-Equestrian
    @Milestone-Equestrian  6 років тому +289

    Also a side note- it’s easy to point fingers and list off what people are doing wrong without really providing any real sources or means of education to help people out. Yelling at people for being abusive doesn’t help them if you don’t have the means to prove your point or a decent way to educate them. If people are truly invested in animal welfare, they need to care enough to do their homework and get the information that they need to present their argument in an accurate and educational manner. Intentionally misleading people by stating that studies are conclusive and there’s no way around that ruins the argument and makes people less likely to listen. Be honest. If people are truly concerned about equine welfare, look for the truth. Not just what makes you comfortable. And care enough to provide the information in a mature and responsible manner that people will be likely to listen to. Attacking people and calling them abusers doesn’t make them open to conversation.

      Thank you so much and she said something like the horse won't take the bit because it hurts but my greeny plays around when I put the halter on and brings her head low to grad the bit from my hand😂No one trained her to she just does. Raleigh said maybe it's because someone kept hitting her teeth with the bit until she took it so she is trying to get away from pain, but she never had anyone else on her like what😂? Could you do a video on how to teach your horse the proper frame?

    I rarely have seen Link in a proper frame. His back is often hollowed and his head is always stretched out like a giraffe. Her hackamore is generally sitting too low on Link's face too which is far worse than a damn snaffle bit. It's disturbing how hypocritical she is and she'll bully her own followers without knowing anything about them, their horse or their riding ability. Thank you Shelby for always making informative and unbiased videos.

  • @lmp8932

    I always rode with a bit. I NEVER had a horse rear on me, or buck. I have hand reared orphan foals and started young horses and retrained OTTB's. I tried a hackamore once on my QH mare, she hated it and just stopped, refused to move. There are so many more things to upset your horse than a bit. I did prefer eggbutts and sweet iron 'broken' bits depending on the horse. My lovely last girl, a QH did not like being ridden in an English style saddle but was OK Western (I am in Australia) or a stock saddle. You have to 'listen' to your horse and adjust your own style to suit them. My two cents worth.

    • @ALittleParanormal
      @ALittleParanormal 6 років тому +2

      My Appy x QH doesn't like English bits or saddles as he would always buck or get away from me when using a snaffle, he never listened to my hand or leg cues in English but i've been trying to make time to convince my horse into letting me ride him bareback and bridleless without him acting up. His western tack is his favorite by far.

    I personally think you and JETEventing should collab to explain this. I'm getting tired of the Bullying going on on Raleighs channel, calling out and displaying tons of people and then talking shit about them. What I find ironic is her new year new me video she was like "last year I was very immature and ect" like and she's STILL doing it. Now she's even doing a Equestrian reacts to Other equestrians where she publicly downs people and channels and How can the blunt bullying be allowed on UA-cam. And what I love the most. When she gets called out she acts victimized and hurt. I think by how much pain she's in someone must be using a bit on her!😂🤔😒

    Yes. Yes. Yes! The importance of teaching long and low to a horse before bringing them into the more uphill frame is so often over looked. Like I said on your poll my horses are trained to work long and low on the lunge without training aids to begin the strengthening process, I also do lateral work on the ground to improve core and pectoral muscles in order for the horse to be able to appropriately lift their backs. Think you've inspired me to do a video on this. 😊

    Thank you so much for making this video! I am sick and tired of people making uneducated rants about bits and whips being “abusive.” As a dressage rider, I have had people come up to me before (even at my school) who’ve seen pictures of me riding on Instagram and say that because I ride in a bit (a double jointed snaffle) and hold a dressage whip (which I rarely use, and if I do I’m always sure to be careful) that I’m abusive and should not be allowed around horses. They also tell me that I shouldn’t be riding my horse on the bit because I’m doing “permanent damage to their neck,” even though I am careful to make sure my horse is stretched and warmed up properly and is not always in a frame. I’m so glad that there are people like you out here to make well educated videos on these kinds of topics 🙂

    Thank you for this video. It is so important that people have all the FACTS about bits/bitless and then make their decision on what equipment to use. Like you said, everything can be abused, and there are so many other aspects (like correct muscles) which should be put much more into focus. No matter what equipment you use, if they don’t use themselves correctly you are “harming” them either way. Raleigh could influence so many young riders in a positive way by making videos more like these. At least we have you 😄

    Wonderfully put, objectively positioned - and kudos for supporting your views with well documented data. This is certainly a topic with varied opinions - but as is clear from your videos - you place the well-being of your horses first and foremost and it is very obvious you research extensively before making any decision where your equine partners are concerned.
    As I have mentioned before in a previous comment - be proud of your accomplishments and know that your viewpoint is not only credible to your viewers - but far more respected because of your intellectual approach and the positive energy you exude with your delivery.
    Keep studying and continue to share your learnings and experiences with us.

    Raleigh has always been a major hypocrite. Nothing she’s ever said has NOT been hypocritical.
    Shelby, you are 100% right. Lots of people have called Raleigh out on her ridiculous assumptions and bullshit. It’s kind of nice to see a bigger UA-cam channel make this video.

    I absolutely love this video. My personal opinion on the bit vs bit less debate is do what your horse goes best in. And I love that you talk about proper frames for horses when being ridden. As usual an amazing video filled with well researched facts and a calm delivery. Thank you Shelby!

    To be honest even though I don't care about uneducated opinions like hers, I couldn't help but question myself as a rider after watching videos or reading comments accusing everyone who uses a bit of abuse. I knew she hasn't any actual evidence to prove her point but I really love my horse and I want what's best for him, so only the thought that I could be hurting him because of the bit I ride in, made me feel guilty. I know a lot of people have faced the same problem, so I wanted to thank you for clearing things up. You are seriously an amazing person thank you for educating the equine community ❤️

    Loving this so much. Informative instead of insulting, promoting awareness instead of ignorance, and most of all being fair in your commentary eventhough the person in question certainly wasn't! I appreciate videos like this because you don't claim to know everything, and you genuinely care for the welfare of horses instead of bashing a screenshot of a person you don't even know! Thank you!

    It is so much better to listen to someone being profesional like this than to listen to someone yelling and name calling.
    I love the contrast between this and Raleigh's video. You are mature and respectful and seem to have made this with the goal of informing people whereas she seemed to be just trying to spread hate. And I noticed the fact that you credible sources rather than biased studies. This is the correct way to show your point of view of something.

You can see your knowledge in your riding videos and you always approach these type of debates so well. I really want to know if Raleigh has responded to any of these. I feel like she is at a loss for words. She should take some notes.

    You are definitely the most reasonable and knowledgeable equine vlogger, so thank you for that. Wish you could have challenged Rick Gore a little bit because he's as unreasonable as Raleigh and his horses go around hollow all the time it's horrible! And he thinks everyone else does horrible things to horses but so does he! Ugh! So sick of the hypocrisy! Thank you for calling some of them out on it. It's easy to run around saying bits are abuse when your a back yard rider who knows nothing about how to teach a horse to use his body correctly when being ridden. Both Raleigh and Rick Gore are the same, banging around on their high headed horses, it's horrible!

    Thank you so much for this, people don't realize that these are not a weapon of abuse but rather a tool for the well-being of the horse. I know that if I attempted riding my young spooky thoroughbred bitless, we wouldn't have a productive and informational ride, but more of a me not trying to die ride. I think eventually I would love to teach him bitless for that extra level of trust (just like you and Milo who I look up to as an example for my young thoroughbred) but people need to realize our different situations and the level of trust between a horse and rider. Plus, riding a 4,3 jumper bitless is REALLY SCARY, I've tried... So, the equestrian world thanks you and we have your back for further confrontations!
