    I realize I made an error re: Elisa and Johnny and badminton being their first 4*. I’d assumed it was due to him not being adequately fit for XC. Regardless, this video is not about her and the cursory point that I used her for still stands. She owned her mistake and learned from it whereas Marilyn has not showed that.

      I completely agree. Elisa made multiple apologizes and videos about getting to the bottom of the problem, what she learned, how she fixed it, and that it would not happen again. Marilyn has only offered some sort of half-ass apology with excuses year after year, and continues to use harsh contraptions in a cruel and incorrect way.

      Yeah I believe that Elisa (eh-Lee-sa) and Johnny aka Simply Priceless had done Rolex and Burghley before Badminton. Something strange happened at Badminton and she ended up having his blood drawn because he should have been fit enough. I also would like to compare her experience with Oliver Townend this year. Johnny was tired and she should have stopped but she didn’t push him and just stayed in two point and let him go slower and take the time faults. Oliver this year got flagged for excessive whipping on two horses that were overly tired on xc at badminton this year.

      It was not their first 4 star, but their first Badminton. I train with Elisa and actually bought my horse from her, and she cares so much about each of her horses! Thank you for saying how she grew and changed as a rider, it really was a very nice way to show Elisa as a rider!

    She has had SEVEN similar incidents, that is completely unacceptable.

    Elisa Wallace really exemplifies a good horseperson. She is not perfect, but I really respect her and her work. She made a big mistake with Johnny, but he was not physically or emotionally hurt long term, and she changed her ways to make sure it didn't happen again. But outside of that, her horsemanship is amazing. She works with mustangs, bringing them from wild animals to upper level eventers, but more importantly she demonstrates an amazing connection and understanding of them. She also understands the proper use of different types of tack and does what is best for the horse. All of the mustangs go predominantly in a rope halter, especially at the beginnings. And the bits she uses are very mild. I have seen her use leveraged bits at 4* events but only smooth snaffles at home, many of which are straight rubber mouth, sealtex covered, myler snaffles, double jointed etc (check out her "7 essential bits" video).
    She is not some fancy princess who just rides the elite horses. She works with all types of horses and is deeply involved in their whole lives, only a small fraction is riding. I have formed this opinion based on watching her youtube channel, and like anyone Elisa could be very different in real life, but I think she really understands and deeply cares for the animals and isn't all about just winning.

      I've been following both Elisa and Shelby for quite a while, and have referred to Elisa's videos in comments here. Elisa's "Rolex" videos are quite revealing (as well as extremely well made); her cross-country helmet cam video of that event is one of the most dramatic riding videos I've ever seen ... came out not long after the Punchestown La Touche Cup and the Maryland Hunt Cup, and 4* is tougher than those cross country steeplechases (yeah, I know, quite different, but still...;-). What I gathered was that while Johnny (Simply Priceless) and Elisa had a superbly clean round, their time was quite slow, since Elisa did not push the horse beyond what felt safe. Johnny is getting on in years, though still a magnificent animal.

      If she didn't have a good connection with the horses then the horses wouldn't be performing their best because no one would perform well for someone they didn't like :) also she's kind enough to at least feed, care and ride them so they are healthy so I guess she's kind. You'd see that she was rude if they were very underweight :) idk this rider but I'm just saying this because these are some points that make her life a bit more average I think

      That's what happens when we reward humans with money, they will do anything to win it, no matter who has to suffer...and they'll help others skirt rules for favours and prestige, it's pretty fucking sick what human beings will do for money and power... Again, if we stop rewarding them, maybe shit would change.

    Great video. The organisation is absolutely to blame. Why have rules if we won't enforce them? For example for the nosebands there is a specific gauge that has been developed to be able to measure noseband thickness objectively, however at least my country's equestrian federation has refused starting using it and I doubt the FEI uses it either. Why? Why don't we want better welfare for our companions?
    I used to do showjumping before going to uni and my boyfriend does eventing but I have a massive ethical dilemma with competing. There seems to be scandal after scandal at the top and if this is what the world's best riders get up to, what hope is there for us mere mortals? Re: Oliver Townend's horrible conduct at Badminton. It's depressing.
    We should be promoting positive examples of good horsemanship in equestrian sports. Klimke, Hester, Dujardin and the like. I wonder if the sport would make a change toward the positive if there was a "best horse welfare" award given every year to a top rider with a considerable monetary contribution?

    • @unrulycrow6299
      @unrulycrow6299 6 років тому +4

      Late to the party but I'd like to add something to your last point: the way the Spanish team handle their horses. The riders do everything themselves and spend a lot of time with their horses, which imo is very positive, especially when it's common at the highest levels to have a groom to handle your horse. I always feel like this team tends to be underrated despite that sort of positive behaviour.
      As for the FEI, considering the shit they let happen in endance riding, I'm not surprised by their lack of reaction. Sadly, horses get hurt in the process, and competition gets a bad name because of that.

    • @piper.r06
      @piper.r06 5 років тому +1

      Yea I agree to both the other reply on this and to this comment. Srsly I DO like FEI but hey just need to go over the rules and enforce them. Otherwise there is no point in having rules and so there’s no point in having he competitions either. And if I ever were to get to that level of riding, I would NEVER hire a groom bc I BARELY trust my neighbor to care for my five horses, let alone have some completely random d00d come care for my horse. HECC hey could steal it for all I know!!! ALLL 4* HORSES HAVE THE CHANCE TO BE STOLEN BY A GROOMMMMM

She did lots of testing for Johnny when she got home, and found out he had a significant magnesium deficiency in his blood work. She made a UA-cam video about it all and apologized again for not retiring on course in it.

    You were absolutely right about that being a contraption,that's all I can think to call it. I wouldn't let that contraption within 200 yards of any of my horses,or that woman for that matter. I've never seen something like that and I hope I never do. I can't express how much it saddens me that this actually happens in the horse world, especially at the level that she performs. This is not what I stand for,this is not what the horse world should stand for,when did this become ok? This is not ok,this is not right,why does no one see that? How can anyone associated with her stand by and watch this happen and not do or say anything? But most of all I wonder how can she herself physically do that to her horses? I don't understand how people can do that,I don't get it,but I don't think I want to.
    A couple years back my mom,my sister and I went to a show,it was the day before and a bunch of people including myself were practicing. There was a lady riding her young mare in a 5 inch stiff bit with no curb strap/chain,and she kept grabbing those reigns and backing the mare 90 miles an hour for no apparent reason,banging on her mouth the whole time,even though the mare was extremely well behaved,very calm and willing. We didn't understand it until a couple months later we were talking to a lady about that and she told us that the rider was "soreing " up the horse's mouth,that way the horse would be more responsive for the show the next day bc it's mouth was bruised.
    The things I would have done to that lady had I known what she was doing at the time... well let's just say that weekend wouldn't have ended the way it did for either of us had I known.
    It's times like this that make me ashamed to be a part of the horse world :(
    P. S.
    I wanted to share my experience so everyone knows to watch out for people doing this,if you see this happening please report it,tell the people putting on the show,do something please. I can't explain how much it kills me that I didn't say or do anything bc I didn't know.
    If you have had simalar experiences please let me know so I know to watch out for it,and anyone else who reads these comments.

    You make so many great points during this video. The energy being put forward on these bit vs bit less arguments should be used to advocate for the safety of the horses. If these professional riders are misusing equipment and the horse is being harmed and it being fluffed off, what example does that show for a person watching that? It’s ok to make your horse bleed? Or just cover it up just to win? It really sets a bad example of what people will do to win. The guidelines need to be changed. You are so right, anything can me misused and can harm a horse. I’m not pro bit or bit less, I am a fan of what is best for the horse. There are so many nerves on the horses face that run superficially that are at risk for damage. These flash nose bands that are too tight or sit too low can injure or even fracture the nasal bone. This is why I love your videos. You give facts and information in order for the audience to be educated and to learn about these topics that are debated. 💕

    I am appalled that officials let that woman ride. That contraption looks like something used in the Inquisition!😢 Very well stated Shelby. If this is equine sportsmanship I'm the Queen of England. I wonder if her competitors report her to whichever body governs the sport? Seems insane that she is allowed to keep competing without some sort of sanctions. Unreal. And yes anti-bit people Shelby is correct. Simply stating all bits are bad is too much of a generalization. I don't think I would like to see this woman ride in a bitless option either...she would have bloody noses instead of mouths.

    It's really sad how there are such people out there that use tight flashes/nosebands and harsh bits, why can't they see horses as a living breathing animal, they are not machines for us. I have seen quite a few people misusing equipment, even being bitless too. I use to be such a bitless advocate but now I am wary about using bitless bridles from learning that horses faces are so sensitive and watching your videos about bits and bitless options in a scientific view really opened my eyes and changed my opinion. You are so knowledgeable and unbiased, Shelby. I love they way you speak about these controversial topics.

    The noseband is called a lever or combination noseband and acts a lot like a strong version of a grackle. It’s actually one of the strongest nosebands you can get, and really shouldn’t be used with anything more than a snaffle. she’s also replace the back strap to a curb chain to make it even harsher... I can’t believe she got through tack check

    • @PoniesOnWheels
      @PoniesOnWheels 6 років тому +13

      We call it a kineton nose band here in Australia. It’s only to be used with a snaffle usually. Along with a running martingale makes it a torturous set up.

    • @mirrepoix

      whiskey mouth it’s to stop the horse from crossing its jaw in extreme cases where they would break/ stretch a leather grackle. Without the chain or harsh bit it can be a useful tool for very strong cross country horses with sensitive mouths, as softer bits can be used to achieve the same amount of control with this noseband as using a plain noseband and a strong bit. If that made any sense?

    • @mirrepoix
      @mirrepoix 6 років тому +9

      it did, thank you! that's very sensible. it's a real shame to see people using a tool like that in such a harsh manner. i went looking for pictures of lever nosebands to get a better idea of how they function and i never saw a single photo of someone combining a lever noseband with a harsh bit or someone using a chain for the bottom strap. i can only imagine how badly she actually rides if she has to add additional pain to have control. especially at this level of competition!
      there must be thousands of riders out there that would kill for the opportunity to compete at her level who don't need to tear their horses' mouths apart to ride. Marilyn is a disgrace!

  • @mandyc1091

    It’s disgusting how she’s allowed to use an abusive bit and noseband. Causing a horses mouth to bleed should be disqualified. This is the problem with riders greed to win the horse pays. The lies people will tell for abusing their horses. With this amount of incidents she should be banned from the sport. Horses will pull and try run from pain in the mouth but deluded people view it as the horse is strong and needs a stronger bit. You don’t even have to missuse bits to cause pain. Inappropriately fittest bitless also cause pain. Most bridles cause pain on facial nerves. Many anti bitless people have no concern how a regular nose band especially dropped and flash nose bands are fitted right and on the thinnest part of the horses nose bones. Many bits should be out lawed. A properly trained horses taught using natural horsemanship using body language that replicates how horses communicate with one an other and us. Using pressure and release. Desensitising horses their no reason why you can’t ride and control your horse with just a neck rain and your body weight in the saddle. But as this takes a lot longer especially as the person has to learn and fully understand horsey language people simply op to take the easy route of using bits to control their horses. Many use their reins for balance and sole ways to direct their horses. I’ve not come across a horse yet that with time and this process of re training that doesn’t go happily and easily in just a rope halter. It’s a massive shame that the industry see you as not safe and not in control unless you have a bit or hackamor. People should be free to use what ever equipment they want and lack of equipment. The control of the horse relates back to how the horse was trained. The slow way is the fast way with horses. But it’s easier to cheat. No excuse to use spurs. Horses can feel a fly land on them so people who believe spurs don’t cause discomfort and pain are just victim of the ignorance of the horse world. Horses do not need bits to be controlled but you will rarely see a horse competed horse without a bit. A brain washed society that it’s normal to ride in a bit. It’s easier to use equipment rather than invest time in training your horse without bits whips spurs and shoes. Stables horses live an unnatural boring life. Their body and functioning systems are designed to graze and be on the move. Not stood in a box being fed three times a day and isolated from other horses. Horses are herd animals who crave the comfort of other horses. Horses only sleep for 2 hours a day. So boxed horses suffer great boredom. All horse issues are caused by people. Horses are kept in ways convenient for the owner and not in the best interests of the horse. Jumping horses is so bad for them. They carry 70 percent of their weight on their front feet. Add the saddle and riders weight to theirs landing on two front feet results in most jumpers suffering painful foot and legs problems and arthritis later in life. Competition horses suffer the worst lives. Jumped excessively high ran for long periods of time causing strain on their hearts and over heating and exhaustion problems. One day eventing is extremely hard on horses. Dressage. Steeplechase flags cross country and show jumping all in one day. All to test the strength stamina and skill of the horse but reality is abusing the horse. Society is good at brainwashing people’s beliefs from the harsh truth into delusion. Race horses have the worst deal in life. Ridden and raced whipped run into exhaustion regularly when not even fully grown or developed. Majority of race horses end up at slaughter. The truth is the horse is worth more dead than alive. Horses that no longer at their best are forced to colic so that owners can claim their insurance value. Fatality rate on the tracks and injury is high . Again most injured horses are destroyed for the insurance money. Or slaughtered for that last bit of money especially when they are unsuccessful. The media makes you think that in the uk race horses don’t end up at slaughter-but they do . Sometimes even straight from the track. The respect horses had in the war time has long gone. Showing horses prevents the natural expansion of the foot. Horses feet go soft when shod and it condemns a horse to a life of wearing metal shoes. This adding concussion in the feet tendons and ligaments. But owing to what’s regarded as the norm in the horse world more will disagree and claim I’m chatting shit. Stable vices are caused from boredom frustration and anxiety of being kept alone and vulnerable. Vices are horses ways of self soothing and preventing boredom. In contrary to popular belief domesticated horses still have the same wild instincts as their wild counter parts. Just because the horse isn’t in an environment to be eaten by predators does not take away their prey instincts. People and animals with eyes to the front of their head are predators. And most animals with their eyes to the side are prey animals. You can take horses out the wild but you can’t remove the wild instincts and survival mechanisms out the domesticated horse. They just adapt from desensitisation and routine. It’s very sad when horses seek comfort from their stable and not other horses. Losing their flight response to danger. For example the race horses caught in the forest fires. Set free from their burning stables and instead of all seeking comfort with other horses herding up and flight response to running back into their burning stable and being burnt alive. Horses always get the blame when they so called misbehave. Horses do what horses do. It’s not personal but people take a horse bitting kicking and wrong behaviour as being a bad horse. When reality is people don’t understand their ways. Horses should be allowed to be horses and not expected to be like robots and understand the language we take and our other human ways

    What I don't get about this is that the vets at Land Rover did their job when it came to other competitors. Michael Jung and one Australian rider whose name escapes me were held in vet check after cross country for horse stiffness and a minor rub on the fetlock respectively before finally being allowed to continue after the check confirmed that the horses were sound and not in any pain. So obviously there are rules and ethics that applied in those situations. But somehow they looked at Marilyn Little's noseband after dressage and the pretty obvious blood that was just pouring out of RF Scandalous' mouth from what definitely does NOT look like her lower lip as they claimed after cross country and for some reason determined that everything was okay and decided to overlook at least a three-year history of her consistently coming up with bloodied mouths? Why was she not held to the same expectations as the other riders?

    I love it how Shelby is one of the only people who focuses on the people and organizations that are misusing tack, not necessarily the tack itself. I do agree that some bits just should not be used if they are inherintly painful for the horse. Go Shelby!!!

    The second one had 4 abuse points; the bit ofc, the chain, the flash and the noseband.
    The bit.. oh my is just cruel.
    The chain digs into the flesh every time he opens his mouth.
    The flash is too tight.
    The noseband can break the little bone (idk what it‘s called) when he opens his mouth, because it‘s so low.

    Elisa is such a good horse person, she mad a mistake and fixed it and it's not because she was getting hate, but before she would've even gotten any hate, she fixed it. That means she actually was sorry. I agree with everything you said in this video. Marilyn is a type of person we should focus our opinions on because people always get mad at the people who use the most gentle tack because they don't do exactly what you do to your horse while people using truly abusive contraptions are getting away with it because they are "professional". The equipment is just as gentle or harsh as the hands that use them.

    I really like how you defend the humane use of bits without saying everything people do with bits is fine. It seems people are either under the impression that bits are always abusive or on the opposite end, they think that yanking, rollkur and bloody mouths are fine.

    Her whole nose band including the caverson is incorrectly rigged, it’s so wrenched under the horses cheek bone it’d be torturous along with the flash in dressage. The nose band she was using XC is called a Kineston, it’s used for strong pullers, without the chain or the other strap. She’s added those straps to make her own custom harsh combination. This bit and nose band, paired with a running martingale it’s honestly not a surprise her horse ended up bloody. Forbid I say their name in the same sentence, but comparing Marilyn to someone like Michael, she is constantly fighting her horses for the stride she’s seen and not letting them jump off a gallop stride like an effective event rider does. It’s disgusting. I’d like to add she’s lost her sponsorship with Samsheild, MDC stirrups and a few others. People are talking and it’s about time. Oliver Townsend also gave a bit of a less then expected ride at Badmington this year but again he completely apologised and it’s not how he usually rides. The sport is under a microscope now.

      Yes, and enviro equine also made a public statement about dropping her as well. I was also disappointed with Oliver Townend's rides. I was really rooting for him. He rode so well in KY and seemed to be so humble and kind during his acceptance speech. The ground jury and event staff need to do more to enforce the rules. I am planning on sending letters to FEI and USEA. We pay too many fees to be apart of these sports for officials to turn a blind eye to obvious problems.

    Sad when the martingale is being used to limit the rider's hands impact rather than for the horse...especially at 4* level
    Also very sad that the construction of the twisted wire mouth is runned, so she can get extra leverage 😩plus string cheekpieces rather than leather so the gag reflex is applied with less pressure - just a bloody mess
    P.s I have absolutely nothing against gags - I use the same kind (a Cheltenham gag) when showjumping one of the horses around 1m20+ tracks. But with a set happy-mouth mouthpiece and leather cheekpieces. I'm super conscience of my hands with it, even more than normal - but It's a hell of alot easier to keep your hands quiet around a showjumping round than a xc course. 10/10 do not recommend gagged bits for xc for the average person. 😬

    @camizee 6 років тому +5

    Re: the flash in dressage -- the FEI rules actually don't address the flash itself, from what I understand. The 2-finger rule is just for the noseband, so the stewards had no power to make her loosen her flash. ☹️

      @anjou6497 2 роки тому

      Ridiculous. It needs to change now.

    • @camizee
      @camizee 2 роки тому

      @@anjou6497 Given that this video was published 3 years ago, I went and checked the FEI rule for any changes and while it still doesn't address the flash by name, this is where the rule currently stands for eventing:
      "Special care must be taken concerning nosebands that have been excessively tightened, regardless of their position. It must be possible to place two fingers between the Horse’s cheek and the noseband: the fingers are to be place side by side, flat against the horses’ cheek. Stewards must not allow any noseband to be positioned so low and tight that it interferes with the horses breathing as this would be against the welfare of the horse. If it happens again the rider should receive a yellow card for not following the instruction of the steward."
      Eventing rules: art. 526.1 & Annex A.2
      FEI Manual for Eventing Stewards-Annexes: Annex IX.5
      I feel like a conscientious steward could use the second sentence to monitor flashes. And the more I've worked in FEI programs, the more I realize ML is an outlier. Most people don't want the flashes too tight at all because the horses don't like it, which can bring unnecessary tension to your dressage score, and because a too-tight flash will pull the cavesson down out of position.

    Because people like her give the people that actually care for their horses a bad name. The FEI needs to take bigger action against horse abuse, right now they're just being cowards.The jumpers are a little bit better though but they still let a ton of shit slide. The bit and bridle combination seriously makes me ill. It's so cruel. She has said that RF is a hard to control mare, if that is the case then she should be riding a different horse. I feel so bad for Kitty (RF), she's such a talented mare. These horses give their all to their riders and deserve to be treated kinder. I have been writing in and complaining about this. At least she has lost some of her sponsors thanks to social media.

    • @Amanda-rv5hz

      @TrappedinSLC 6 років тому +1

      And at some point you need to accept also that maybe the horse just doesn’t want to do what you’re asking no matter how talented it is. If you try a bunch of reasonable things and the horse never settles into what you’re doing, try something else. Horses don’t care how talented they are. Maybe Kitty just needs to be a trail horse or wants to go play with cows or something, who knows. Routine bad/uncontrollable behavior is a sign the horse is saying something and you’re not listening. We owe it to them to listen.

This is not working with a horse, it's using cruel domination. You're right. I wonder what this rider does to her horses when no one is looking … it's time to find out. ENOUGH - where is the regulating body of these horse shows ? We must demand change for the horse's sake. ENOUGH cruel domination over horses in the show and sports world !

    That's rider error, that's rider fault , poor judgment,poor care it's all poor , I would bet she uses these contraptions because she's got a lack of confidence , her fear is driving her need to have harsh bits and nosebands like clamps . It would be nice if she could get a bit fitter in to see how they ride together but can suggest other bits to help the horse and to try them with bit fitter there to see how horse & rider is working with different bits , double wire bits single wire bits are nasty , there are horses have grooves in their tongues from these horrific bits , I've heard a horses tongue was almost split in 2 years bk someone using these things . 2019 yet barbarian bits are still legally used along with abusivley tightening the straps on his nose band !!😱😤😡 🔨🛎⚖✉️huge 💰 and home investigated on trainer /tack used at home . She should have been disqualified and given a years ban , be harsh and stomp it out !!
