    Being so small and having a lot of feathers and bone, Simon reminds me of a Gypsy Vanner. Since they're drafts but rarely get over 15hh.

      I’ve worked hands on training gypsies and I definitely think it’s possible. People cross gypsies very often. We worked with a few 14 hh gypsies as well so had they crossed that with another pony breed you’d likely get something like Simon

    I feel like Simon could be some sort of Gypsy Vanner (which is a cob breed). I really wish they showed cob breeds for the test you did for him since he has the feathers and coloring of a gypsy

      It could be that because the akhal -teke is such an ancient breed that many horses might carry a slight amount of DNA from that breed but for Simon it would be a much smaller percentage than the test showed.

    • @aaronrodighieri4089
      @aaronrodighieri4089 5 років тому +3

      Bridget Connor Totally agreed, just like the cream draft, both are ancient breed that could possibly be(somehow) Simon ancestors. Well knowing that the horses that came to America where morron x andalusian crossed horses, that morron where(are) actuall arab breeds( like Shagya, Arabian, Akhal-Teke) and the Andalusian breeds where(are) a mix of Iberic horses( From England, and Central Europe). So, at the end we can tell that those DNA tests where sort of right, somehow by historical facts.

    Oh, and what about Welsh Mountain Pony for Simon? There were tons of them about in your parts... easy to train, cold-hardy, and FEATHERS!
    Oh dear, that WOULD explain the akhal-teke/draft cross(sorry-NOT SORRY, Texas A&M). If you look at recent revised(sorted out)histories of the British Isles the Welsh Mountain Pony could be a cross between the central Asian cavalry mounts(thanks Rome!) and the local drafts! I've seen that metalic sheen on some of them when they shedded out in the spring. wow.

    • @feigekatarina5745
      @feigekatarina5745 5 років тому +1

      Rebecca Ferguson oh! Now I know where to get a welsh mountain pony, but I'm still wondering about the chincoteague pony. I don't know if any have feathered legs and I've heard that wild horses and ponies have harder hooves, but I do know that they're built sturdy, do sometimes make good competition ponies, and if trained improperly, might just be left to grow wild after being bought as a foal. I had a small encounter with a mustang a while ago, and know that as much as the owner tried to train it, it was so shy that eventually they had to sell it again.

    It's really too bad that horse DNA testing is inaccurate, cause I was really looking forward to seeing Simon's! My heart horse looked very like him and I had the same type guesses of part draft, maybe some cob. :P

  • @knz730
    @knz730 5 років тому +3

    Simon's results are hilarious, part akhal-teke! That might be my fave. I'd believe Rue was something like 3/4 quarter horse and 1/4 warmblood (or even half, honestly) only because I have a half Kaimanawa (which is a NZ wild/feral horse breed, like the mustang but smaller and with a pretty strong Clydesdale and British pony influence), half hanoverian, and the only way I'd believe he's half hanoverian is because I know the stallion and the situation that led to him being bred (accidentally, fences were jumped). He does have a touch of refinement from the warmblood but he'd pass for full Kaimanawa no problem, he (sadly) inherited very little of the warmblood athleticism! Dad was a nice show jumper, and Cruise struggles to coordinate all four legs enough to get off the ground sometimes! Some first generation crosses do throw very heavily to one breed, so mayyybeeee Rue has some fancy warmblood in there but it's way hidden under a whole lot of quarter horse :)

    For some reason, I enjoy guessing horse breeds so here are my best interpretations of what Simon and Roulette could be:
    ~
    As most of the other commenters have already mentioned, I’d agree that Simon has got to have some Traditional Cob DNA. In regards to determining which pony breed he’s mixed with, I thought it would be rather interesting if he was partial French Saddle Pony or Lewitzer Pony. Although since those two breeds aren’t fairly common, I was also considering Gotland Pony or New Forest Pony.
    ~
    For Roulette, Quarter Horse would make sense as her primary breed, but I also believe she could be partial Irish Sport Horse. Then again with guessing warmbloods, it’s so hard to know for sure.

    As I suspected Phoebe does have Blue heeler and Border Collie, that's what she looks like, both great herders. Every mutt has Pit Bull (or American Staffy here) here. Simon - well that was a bit odd! Percheron x Welsh pony x with a pinto pony mutt. At least they got Roulette reasonably correct, QH are my top horse and she looks like a QHx as you said.

  • @rebeccaferguson7734
    @rebeccaferguson7734 5 років тому +7

    Roulette could be that...a lot of people are breeding their fav QH to the warmbloods(that are by definition SUPER mixed)and then dumping them if they aren't instantly fab. It's pretty sad sometimes as they often look like bad Frankenstein experiments. Imagine a WB sized head slapped on a stringy QH(it's owner thankfully just LOVED her)!
    You might want to collaborate with a Spanish speaker...the Argentines should be waaaaay ahead of Texas A&M (which is hilariously famous for intellectual myopia to the point of paranoid schizophrenia with confabulation- I kid u not)(I am Texan)and the Koreans should also have quite the data base.

    In my stable there once was a pony that was a cross between new forest, arabic and norweigan fjord-horse (vestlandshest). She had the fjord-horses striped black and white mane and their black stripe along the spine. She also hade the arabics elegant head but with slightly less extream feutures and her coat was like sunny golden yellow color. Beuty as she was called, was a truly special horse and she was incredibly beautiful (therefore the name...). Unfortunely Beuty is no longer with us because she had to be put down after a nasty knee injury she never recovered from.

    I also did the same test through Texas A&M on my rescue. His seemed pretty accurate - 1st breed was a QH, 2nd was a Missouri Fox Trotter, 3rd was a Selle Francais (wild card, lol). Though I believe after doing a bit of research, Selle Francais and Missouri Fox Trotter derive from some of the same older/ancient breeds, so I guess that is why it shows up in the DNA.
    Definitely a fun thing to do to find out what they *might* be :)

  • @plantanarchy9579
    @plantanarchy9579 5 років тому +2

    It makes sense that horse breed tests wouldn't be super accurate because half of our current horse breeds are just registry based and most registry studbooks only closed within the last 100 years. So there just can't be as many distinct genetic markers as with dogs to really get an accurate read. The weird horse breeds could just be them hitting enough markers of the ancestors of more common breed. Like the Turkoman is thought to have been an influence in developing the Thoroughbred I think?

I can completely see a Quarter Horse/Trakhener looking like a pure Quarter Horse. The Morgan/QHs I've seen have a lot more bone definition in the face than Roulette has. They're incredibly long and thin, about as wide as a saddle stand (seriously!) and hold their heads up very high which can be crazy annoying lol. And they have those amazing gold or bronze coats. Just stunning. Some of the world's best long distance runners. However, they are such an extreme physical specimen that I'm sure you'd be bound to know if ur pony were mixed AT!! hello :)
    i think simon could have quite a big percentage of icelandic horse in him!
    my family has two iclandics, and after having watched his tranformation video i saw a few similarities! :)
    first of all - his appearance. his nose and eyes as well as the overall headshape look quite icelandic, as they are ponylike and the corners of this mouth are quite short. his whole build resembles the one of the breed.
    secondly - his moves ;). in his transformation video his first transition to canter under saddle is shown - you can see that he kind of 'walks' into canter, and that the canter itself is not as 'jumped' and rather 'walked'. (english is not my native language, it's a bit hard to describe ^^) i guess he could be 3 gaited (like most other breeds) with a bit of tölt/tolt (one of the two 'special' gaites of icelandic horses, although other breeds like paso finos tolt too!) - he moves a bit like one of our horses, which is 4 gaited (but we have to work on his tolt - he's not a 'naturtölter' who shows tolt on his own)
    last, but not least - character. icelandics are (mostly) friendly horses (and kind of sassy too ;)) after simon lost his fear of humans he seemed to behave similar to our horses in some way - nibbling on jackets and hats and looooving treats. our icelandics would do almost anything for food ;)
    anyways, i think you've done a wonderful job with him and i hope he'll find a nice forever home!

    Dale, welsh mountain pony, and Caspian pony. It would be awesome if Simon was one of those breeds. I was surprised at how long his mane was, I don't think many breeds outside of Spanish or welsh can get their manes that long.

    My guess for Phoebe would have been Border Colley x Jack Russel Terrier and for Simon Irish Cob x Welsh Poney ;-). Some Percheron ? I don't think it's possible for a small poney stallion to mount a huge Percheron mare ... Anyways this is interesting but frustrating as DNA tests are not quite reliable for the moment. I will have done one for myself one of these days, I hope it will be accurate !

    I just got my rescue mares registry and results back from that same university last week and I felt like they were pretty accurate with her at least. The first result was thoroughbred which is what I assumed she was from the start, the second result was Trakehner which explains why she has such large withers so i could see that... The only one that I could just assume was way back down the line was Holsteiner being in her. Either way I have myself an english baby 100%

    • @Milestone-Equestrian
      @Milestone-Equestrian  5 років тому +3

      Yeah, she is probably less mixed than my two or has breed genotypes that are more researched. Milo's test seemed more legitimate but these two just simply couldn't have had accurate tests

    • @Ryeshine
      @Ryeshine 5 років тому +1

      @@Milestone-Equestrian That's unfortunately probably the case but, hopefully in the future they will have more information about the genetic makeup of other breeds since I believe they base the results off of 50 horse breeds or so (I could be wrong though). My mare probably just happen to fall in a couple of those genomes. But 50 breeds will not go a long way when you see how many breeds there are, most being mixtures of the older breeds which are most likely the ones that they've studied. We can only hope for more specific research in the future. 💙😊

    I think the horse DNA test would be fun just to see if you got any crazy results. Like I know what my mare is she's a quarter horse Arabian cross likely more Arab than quarter in her there is no denying it she moves like an Arab has vitiligo(which if you didn't know is ver common in arabs) has a build that's dead center between a quarter horse and a Arabian, but it would be fun to see if she comes back like warmblood or something. My mom and I would honestly get a kick out of it.

    Cream drafts are basically a palomino gypsy lol... they are on the smaller side. I've worked with a few and I could actually see Simon being more cream than the other two breeds... in the states they are more rare but have a decent group of people that breed purebred and crosses because of their AWESOME minds and ease of training.

    • @Milestone-Equestrian
      @Milestone-Equestrian  5 років тому +2

      I'm sure there are breeders but I would find it unlikely that one of the select few breeders in the area would breed a cross to send to an auction. As far as I know, we have none near by and Simon was in Alberta.

      I can pretty much guarantee she isn't because it also showed up as her second breed type which means she would be more trakehner than quarter horse and it just simply isn't accurate it isn't the height that's throwing me off its the conformation, nothing about her build is indicative of any type of warmblood breed
