Thank you Captain Cousteau for inspiring me as a teenager to also become an underwater explorer by training to be a SCUBA Diver. Thank you for teaching me the importance of protecting the natural environment of our oceans. I am honored to have met and talked with you on two occasions and become a Founding Year Member of your Cousteau Society. Today my library is filled with your books where I can explore the undersea world with you anytime as I flip through their pages reading your words and in my mind, hear your voice.

I loved watching Jaques Cousteau every week in the 80's when I was a kid.

I don't think he would be very happy about the state of the oceans today. But everyone who is fighting for ocean conservation now was inspired by him. I loved watching his show when I was a little girl, and now I sculpt many sea creatures. Bless his heart, he sure had a big one.

I will tell you a story. I worked at OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation) in Beloit, WI. Cousteau was going to China at the time I believe. They were using OMC engines on their blow boats and called up OMC for extra parts for the engines to bring with. I was a parts technical person and have been in the boating industry for like 30 years. I know engine parts for sure. So, the lady who was in charge of getting the parts for the guy on the Cousteau boat going to China called me over and said the vertical drive shafts that were needed were on back order for months. And the guy on the Cousteau boat, (I don't think it was the Calypso) that was the mechanic had to have them before they sailed off. She told me that they HAD to have them in case of a failure etc. So, I went into the blue print area where all the parts of every engine was, and found a vertical driveshaft that would work, but needed a different water pump to use with it. I won't go into details on how this would work, but, yes indeed, it would work. Same exact shaft, just a different water pump hook up. Anyway..... So, there were like 120 of these vertical driveshafts in stock. I told the lady in charge of getting the parts, that all they had to do was order the shaft number I gave her, along with the water pumps. So, the next thing that happens is, I am in the Vice Presidents office getting yelled at. Yes... I did. I was told that I wasn't supposed to figure out the parts that would replace any other ones. (which I was very good at by the way.) And I told the Vice President, "Did you hire me to sell parts?" He said, "yes". I said, then am I doing my job? He said, Ummmm, Yes." I said, "listen... I've been a diver since I was 13. If Cousteau needs parts for his blow boats, then by God, he is going to get them!" And you wonder why OMC went out of business! I was fired not long after this. The cool thing was.... The mechanic, or parts person to secure the parts for the blow boats, sent me and the lady in the office a Cousteau Society Calendar to hang in her office. It was awesome. I still remember this, and was glad I got them the parts. I found out later, that all the parts and engines were given to Cousteau free for advertising purposes. So I'm sure they didn't want to give away money they didn't want to. That Vice President lost his job also when the company went bankrupt. Lol.... I, on the other hand, went into my own boat yard business and was very successful. Hope you enjoyed the story. It was a great time.

Even back THEN he knew about the importance of conservation and Humanity's role in protecting the planet. I wonder what cousteau would say now, we are in a clearly worse state however most individuals don't care enough to make change

Why are turbo sails not used now, if they are more efficient than classic ones?
