Refurbishing Calypso!

Hi is work being done on the Calypso in 2017, this is an iconic piece of history in which it needs to be saved for future generations too see, how they started out with marine conservation in the 1970s , Jack Cousteau is a icon of that time and had a passion to preserve and save endangered species I think we owe it to him to preserve the calypso. They have a long way to go to get her back in service. But im glad they are going to fix her up and put her back into service to teach many about the ocean.

I hate to say it, but I think Calypso's time has come and gone. She should now be relegated to memory as all efforts to restore her have been inept. Her name is slowly fading from collective memory and , sadly, the work of Captain Cousteau himself is also fading into history, Francine had the opportunity to reignite the passion for the seas with Calypso's restoration and yes, make her an ambassador for our oceans, instead she has only succeeded in virtually isolating the Cousteau's from the mainstream. Only Michelle and the grandchildren carry the torch now, but only a ghost of what they once were..

Looks more like a scam than a serious effort to have her back in shape and service.
If you don’t have the funds, or the heart, or the ability to take care of her just let it go to someone that can!

Most of it below the waterline is actually original, as it is with most wooden ships. What is beneath the sea is salt-impregnated, above the waterline it is the fresh water that is the biggest enemy + that they do not keep the boats dry and airy under decks and voids when the boats are "forgotten" during storage. Most of the old wooden ships that are being restored are so, almost only the old wooden hull, below the waterline that is from the original ship. So I still hope to see old proud D/V CALYPSO come with new superstructure, new engines and new happy and proud faces on the deck and on the bridge. To visit ports she is well known in around the world, to carry Costau's message about the planet's ocean further. Good luck Calypso.

Sounds like they ran out of funding and now its sitting out to rot again. Due to lawsuits and other such stuff I doubt it will ever get finished now.

It was struck by a barge in Singapore in 1996, flooded and sank in 16 feet of water. It was refloated, patched and sent to La Rochelle were it was to rehabbed, but Cousteau died in 1997. The maritime museum at La Rochelle had said they would preserve and display the Calypso, instead it fell into server disrepair. Phillips daughter, Jacques grand daughter campaigned to have the ship moved to Brest for rebuild/overhaul and preservation were it resides today under a legal battle for ownership and payment for work done.

@@dragonknight1465 what's sadder is that the bills were payed off after the ownership was established and it was transported to a Turkish shipyard for competition of the overhaul. It was there that a fire broke out and destroyed much of the new timber construction, though the original parts remain. That is how things stand today.

Yeah I was thinking almsot the same thing... They could have taken the original plans and just built a repoduction from scratch... Maybe with some of the aritifacts or pieces from the original... Would have been cheaper and easier.

Yep, think they really underestimated the amount of rot in the timbers and the emotional thing kicked in, you know, we have to keep going, it’s a huge restoration project, a real bottomless money pit, i hope they get it finished....eventually 🤔

It's a shame about Calypso. She brought glory to France and beautiful "world relics", she did not deserve to rot in a harbor. If a new Calypso is ever built only the name will survive from the old hull, the ship was literally melted down. Don't waste the French people's money needlessly.
