People must have thought he was insane waking around pointing a camcorder at himself in the 1980’s. It was worth it
Yes i agree it was something you never saw in the 80s people in the background were looking at nelson all the time
@@larbo4200 But were absolutely fine with it despite it being odd. Now people can decide to get mad at you if they think they're being watched, yet cameras are ubiquitous. People were just better back then overall.

Have just discovered Nelson. What a charming polite man. He is a master the way he holds that camera...unbelievable! Love watching his videos
Classic salesman. That breed of service is long gone. Thank you Nelson for creating a Time Machine for us all.
Miss those days when you went to a store and the sales person was actually knowledgeable of the items and was helpful
They still are, and provide exceptional service and provide you their personal cellphone numbers to send you updates and catalogs--including pre-order seasonal items and presale items if you shop at more exclusive stores. Don't wait your time shopping at stores everyone else goes to and you'll have a better experience.
He elevates the most ordinary events of everyday life into something fascinating and beautiful. What charisma.
……right!!! I just can’t seem to stop watching! Nothing really exciting going on. I think it’s just the nostalgia…..knowing he’s gone now, his mom is probably gone and this older salesman also smh……wow
I love Nelson! And his southern charm! and I love that he’s the exact same no matter if he’s with his friends, his mom, on the party scene, visiting his neighbors or the doctors office. He never changed and was always himself! Never loud, crazy acting, very mellow…..always carried himself like a lady 🤭🤭
Whenever I see old folks in his videos I find it crazy how these elderly people, so lively still, went through incredible times. WW1, the depression, ww2, the 50s, etc. It’s just insane... Imagine the stories they had to tell.
And now theyre all gone or atleast 100 years old
My grandmother on my Mom's side was born in 1917. She lived just a little bit before the end of WW1. She survived the 1918 Spanish Flu. She lived through the Great Depression and WW2 (1939-1945). She lived through the Cold War (1947-1991), the Korean War (1950-1953), the Vietnam War (1954-1975). She died in 1996 but she experienced a lot in her lifetime.
You are going to go through a lot more than the ppl you described. Although the indoctrination you young ppl have been through , you ppl don’t know what freedom is.
@@biggils8894 Are you talking about the coming of the New World Order? Because I believe we might go through a lot more then we think in our lifetimes. And yes are freedoms are at stake. It will get to the point where we can't ignore the fact we are going to have to fight for our freedom on this planet or we will die and our freedom taken away completely.
Humans are very adaptable ..u may think Ur not, but if u have to be...u will be.
What a great salesman. I miss service like that. Now, I can never get anyone in the stores to get off their phones to help. You walk up to them to ask a question & they act like you are disrupting their day.
I went into lowes the other day and three employees were standing by the front door chatting about who was getting off of work first. I asked where all the carts were and they said in the parking lot. Had to go get my own. They were still standing there when I got back.
Service was already going downhill in the eighties. Remember in Back to the Future he goes to 1955 and sees a car go into a gas station and everyone runs out to help.
Lol Why would you expect them to go fetch you a cart?
EarthToClo It sounds funny today but back in the day that's exactly what companies did for their customers.
Yeah, I feel sorry for the workers sometimes though, the companies dont want to spend the money, fair enough if they are just being lazy shits, but the other day I was in a shoe store there where about 6 people wanting service and just one poor guy to run around getting everyones shoes, its not fair on the staff of the customer but the companies dont want to spend any money.
Nelson Sullivan was a legend, youtube should make an award, that holds his name
It's wonderful seeing their reaction to nelson filming and talking to the camera.
His mom is especially sweet; she doesn't question it and actually says on at least one occasion how she would have liked to dress differently if nelson is recording. It shows her love for her son. May they both rest in piece.
I can’t get over the fact how amazing this guy was
That salesman was awesome. Wish people were still that nice.
There are in high end dress stores where you spend a couple of average person paychecks for a pair of shoes or a suit
Well, he was being filmed. ;)
You would have men working in department stores that would be your salesman. My father was a surgeon and wore a suit every day of his life. Dad didn’t get tailor made suits but still bought fine suits (silk and wool exclusively) which were altered to fit. When I went to get my first suit, Mom took me to Dad’s guy at Blach’s (Birmingham AL) and he fixed me up. Mom even took home some suits for Dad to try and bring back. (They would let you do this). The salesman had a card with each customer’s sizes and preferences. It’s a now long gone part of US retail.
If there was less rude entitled customers there would be more
A man who was about to be 40 shopping with his mother, her sitting there while the salesman puts nelsons shoes on for him. A grown man would be ridiculed for that today unfortunately, much more harsh and judgmental world these days even though we’re under the guise of tolerance. Your mom is always your mom no matter how old you are
If anything I'm sure his mother insisted on the trip to the mall haha. Some mothers AND grandmothers can be a lot like that.
Exactly
@@bz4413 my mom still likes to buy me jeans and I'm 40
Me too, I don't think that 89 is any different than today. If momma wants to buy it.. It don't matter what your age is... Even straight men , most wives well step back and let momma buy and then throw it away after they get home Lmao
I wouldn't ridicule a grown man buying clothes with his mother. My relatives occasionally treat me to clothes and take me shopping for it. Born in '75 and I've never been harassed for that. It'd be more an issue personally if he had been unable or unwilling to buy his own things and was sponging, but a nice treat during a visit home is perfectly normal and I know men in their 30s-50s who do this.
“The simplest most classic type of a cut “ 🙌🏻 Thats right Nelson -Stay away from the trends !
Nelson invented "the selfie stick" b4 anyone thought of it. Great classic videos.
The selfie stick was his arm! And he could keep a camera steady like no one else! What a guy
“wyd”
“taking my picture” 😂😂😂
I love how warm and inviting the atmosphere and colours were in the 1980s like in that department store, warm lighting, browns, creams and golds. Now it's all very cold, minimalistic and septic looking.
Yes everything back then, stores and cars all had character. Even the fast food restaurants looked classy inside, now it's all plain, dull and empty looking.
This is one of the most calm people I've ever seen. Love all these old stores feel like I'm back in the 80's. Review Brah needs to watch this so he could seen people from this era wearing the suits he wears now.
Paula King i have been taking note to his calm characteristics and im hoping to try and apply them to my days now on, it seems to do him very well. I love his demeanor
I love the fact that he was an individual and not into the trends
I like how when Nelson visits his hometown a little bit of his southern twang talking roots comes out a little bit in these videos
Amazing to think he was born in the '40s and therefore his mother must've been from the teens or early '20s, a hundred years ago. :) If he knew his grandparents Nelson probably knew people from the 1800s. And now his videos are being watched in 2019.
2021!
I did some research on his family as I was bored his mother was born around November 1914.
almost 2023
And now almost 2024!
Did anyone else notice the Salesman say to Nelson at the end "It was great waiting on you, have a great year."
He died 4 months later...just so sad.
😔
@dee marlin you kidding me?
Yeah i heard that😔
wow so sad I just love Nelson had a friend that was so much like him
Those sales jobs were the best. Throughout my retail career with Belk stores, most of the older customers and older employees LOVED what sales used to be in department stores.
Just discovered this channel, can't stop watching! So sad he died so young, my Dad had a fatal heart attack at 44.
He’s just so damned charming. It’s amazing to witness.
This salesman told Nelson he loved him right after meeting him because Nelson brings out the best in everyone. He is such a one of a kind soul.
Suddenly Nelson's videos are being suggested in my feed. Synchronicity? How many are here for the same reason? Wonderful footage. A time when the VAST MAJORITY of people got along with one another. So glad Nelson documented this era. I was a very young man in 1989. I remember the sales people being so friendly, respectful and courteous. God I miss those days. We must restore our attitude towards one another. I don't know how we do this. Maybe it's with a friendly Smile, a Hello or a Good Morning. We need to change for the better. For a better world. People getting along. Can you imagine? What a concept. Thank you Nelson. Your footage is teaching us valuable lessons.
I was speaking about Keith Haring art the other day with my phone nearby and I guess the UA-cam algorithms thought I might like this.
I found this channel last week. I get so emotional watching these. He was a true Vlogger. It’s so sad he didn’t get to thrive in the era he should be in now. He’s the definition of an icon.
you sure don't get service like that anymore in a store. especially someone helping you put on and take off shoes.
Might be an American thing, I've never been left hanging in a European shoe store.
@@GrijzePilion same here in Asia
The guys full of shit listen to him
Depends where you go but they will help if you ask but usually you have to ask because if they try to help you without asking then the customer can get pissed and be like ‘I can put my own shoes on!’
Well, is the 80s...thats why!
I only recently found Nelson, and now I can't stop watching all of his incredible videos. What a beautiful and kind man he was. These videos are treasures and I won't stop until I've watched them all. Thank you, Nelson!
Nelson was a amazing person would of love to meet him I was born 1981 I was 8 years old at that time
"Love ya, you're a super guy" Nelson attracted such great energy.
I miss the days where you could get personal service. I remember going to the shoe store and having the salesman personally adjust my shoes. Going to the gas station and having your tank filled. Getting personally tailored at the clothes store. I really miss those days. Everything was so personal and people were friendly. Everyone wanted to have a conversation and no one was in a big hurry. The world was so much better back then. This gentleman still amazes me. It is like he knew this is what people would watch in 2018 and he wanted to document a better time for the youth of today. Truly astonishing.
Nelson's brother and mom outlived him. Nelson must have inherited the heart condition from his dad who died also same age. So sad

I'm here in Columbia right now, but was living in New York when this was filmed, such a small world. Lourie's is closed now, they were a great little old-fashioned department store. It's been fantastic seeing these videos, at first I didn't realize Nelson was from South Carolina, there must've been an exodus of us from here to New York around that time period. The salesman is killing me. Such a very small world.
Now there is an exodus from NY to SC.....:(
Watching this makes me think about how sad Nelson's mother will be in a few months when Nelson passes away much too soon.
In awe of Nelsons talent just can not stop watching his vids they are brilliant .
The mall was alive and kicking in the 80's. As a teen , I practically lived there on the weekends. Arcade and getting cool shoes for high school.
I wish I would've known Nelson. What a beautiful human being he was!❤
Which mall was this?
@@ryanguerry5994 I don't know Ryan. I'm sorry. I never lived in New York. How are you?

I think it's great that he had probably no idea what the Internet was and how many people would see this and how many years it could be on here for

I'm pretty sure he knew someone who see these vids. I recorded vids on vhs in hopes that years later it would be something important someone would appreciate.
People back then knew something like the internet and other technology advances would be made.It was just a matter how could this tech could be achieved. People knew this stuff as far back as the 50s..ever seen the jetsons?

Gilbert Arciniega I have seen your videos from 88 and 89 they are just as incredible as nelsons!!!! I was 7 in 1989 and I remember going to Disney world for our family vacation and I recall people smoking on the airplane. It was the only year of the 1980s have real good memory of, something about the year 1989 it was the 80 s but there were still some futuristic things. I love your videos too from Southern California and you working at McDonald's. I remember in 1989 going to mcdonalds play land and how all the food back then was in these styrofoam boxes that were not environmentally safe so they got rid of them. The coffe cups just had this MMMMMMMMMM around it.

Wow...this takes me back to a time when there was actually help in department stores, and there were actually high-quality shoes, and MADE IN USA! I grieve now when I go to stores filled with junk from China and no staff... ;(
That's corporate greed for you!
There’s no staff in department stores anymore because everything is beginning to become automated. Internet shopping is killing the high street and the jobs that go with it.
Tell me about it. I was in Foot Locker the other month and all 3 employees were chatting behind the counter as I kept sitting on the bench with a shoe in my hand. Ended up trying on whatever was on the wall for 5 minutes before calling over for some help --they act like "What are you bothering us for?"
Fear not! Trump is gonna bring back the jobs and MAGA!

He’s probably not that old
People say "it's so sad, he died young" but let's. not forget he lived a life of plenty compared to many of us- he had a family support network, parents buying him clothes, could rely on family money, no risk of homelessness, good health, all of thesse are things so many people don't have.
