I visited his house in May 2019 when visiting the USA for a holiday from London, UK. After watching many many videos Nelson made, being able to stand inside his house was a very special moment.

@@WrestlingFace unfortunately no :( I planned my vacation for 8 months, I was due to leave for New York March 18th, 2020 And they closed the city down March 17th bc of Covid. At least I had a nice chunk of savings to get me through the month and a half I was out of work during quarantine.
It brings tears to my eyes and warms my heart that they dedicated the third-floor to him. A couple other walk-throughs I’ve seen this wasn’t there yet and it was all just a regular art gallery. His portrait and his pictures of all of his friends and having his videos playing all the time oh my gosh. SO wonderful. He would be so pleased. This makes me so happy. ❤️

He was such a warm and wonderful person, and his videos bring you back in time, literally time travel, so wish I'd had the chance to meet him! It would have been an unknown tragedy if he had not documented who he was. When I am feeling down all I have to do is watch his videos and I feel apart of something extraordinary. He has a way of filming where I feel included and right there along side him. If that makes any sense. Nelson was a priceless gift to our world.

Well, the streets were filled with druggies, hookers and in the hot humid summer, I am told, the place smelled pretty awful. It was not desirable to normal people. But yes to have a 3 story house in NYC?
That whole downtown was a ghost town at night , where Stuyvesant high school is now is where there were huge sand dunes , you used to find ancient pottery and bottles there , it was the dig out for the trade center
@@DVOnly only around where he lived , there was a hotel on the west side where the hookers would hang .there is still a very famous steakhouse I think you can see in some videos “old homestead” really excellent place . But downtown past that around the trade center at night was a total ghost town after 5pm
In his final video, he mentioned how beautiful his neighborhood was at the time. How he loved to take a walk to the pier close by where you're at. He was basically pleased with how his life went. He probably wouldn't mind an art gallery made from his final residence because art displays the beautiful work people makes. Also I am glad that vine he personally planted remains and I hope it remains for several years to come. I hope he's resting peacefully.
All the memories at this place... every nook and cranny you filmed just brought back memories of when Nelson filmed those exact spots too in his videos. RIP Nelson.

Amazing how this place has been preserved. Nelson Sullivan was a person ahead of his times. A true pioneer and originator of the modern day vlogger and selfie style video recording. His countless videos take you on all types of journeys throughout the NY city. The way he captured the era of the days of the 80’s is truly art within itself. His videos are quite intriguing and entertaining including the likes of RuPaul, Dee-Lite, Michael Musto, DJ Keoki, Michael Alig, Keith Harring, James St James, Julie Jules, the list goes on….. Nelson was such a lovely, kind & gentle soul...I think he would've approved of this. The portrait/painting of him & Blackout had pride of place in his living room. I don't think even Nelson realized how much of an important artist he was/is...I think appreciation of him as an artist will grow much bigger in the coming decades.
RuPaul lived here couch-surfing with Nelson. RuPaul then rented it with three others, for $1500 a month till around 1991. Imagine, a three story house in Manhattan for $1500. So many people passed through that door and up those stairs. It’s wonderful that Nelson captured so much of that amazing time.
Hmm, sort of "true"… The rent was not really paid. Nelsons brother Mark obtained a court order to evict the "characters" living there. Most of Nelsons personal belongings were stolen and sold, I am surprised the telephone survived. The tapes were joint property of Nelson and Dick, so Dick did come and take those. The poor dog "Blackout" was not well cared for and lasted only 4-6 months after Nelson passed..

Somehow Nelson becomes your best friend. It was so intimate the videos he shared. So hard to watch the last videos before his death, because you know it is all going to end. Something changed when he died. Michael Alig went off his nut on drugs and helped kill a club kid, that was the death nell to the era. Part of me wishes that Nelson had been around to document, part of me thinks thank god he didn't see this all crash and burn. He would have become a famous documentarian, he was on the brink of fame. Will always love Nelson. Thank you for honoring him.

The area that this house is in was previously a meat packaging and delivery market in the 80's before it got revitalized and gentrified to the trendy hang out square it is nowadays.
I really didn't know who Nelson Sullivan is/was, so I googled him. Thank you for taking your time to both educate/showcase his work and allows your audience to follow along on the tour of his home/office and now museum.

Was so happy to see there was a floor dedicated to Nelson Sullivan. Such a talented guy and it is wonderful to watch all his tapes. He was, one of few who seemed to be inclusive with many,unlike most of the others in his films. He actually brought out the truth about what was going on in the 80s in gay community.
Nelson was so ahead of his time, coming from down south and having the NYC vibe in his blood, he knew he belonged in NYC at that time, so he documented everything and anything like he knew he was supposed to do so, I remember growing up in 2nd Ave in east village in the 80s, and I love his videos cause I can actually feel how it was at that time and see the streets how they were.
I discovered Nelson just yesterday after stumbling across a UA-cam video of one of his vlogs. I’ve watched quite a few now and am fascinated how ahead of his time he was. Sad he was taken too soon, but fantastic his memory has been remembered with such a cool little museum. Amazing to see how much has changed in 30 years around the area he lived too.

Nelson probably never dreamed that his home would eventually become a museum with a whole section dedicated to his life, which is so awesome and touching, and you can even see a portrait of him and Blackout. It was weird to see the backyard as it is now. I remember watching a video which I believe was taken on the last day of his life, where Lady Bunny had some burgers going on the BBQ in that yard. So surreal. I was a very happy child during the years Nelson was doing his vlogging and those years are still so clear in my mind. Of course I was unaware of Nelson at the time, or Mama Ru or Lady Bunny, etc. But this was what I will always see as "my era". I miss the 80s.
Nice video, Nelson was the first guy to make vlogs in an analog era where people lived a way simpler life and were happy with one another. This happened way before most of us were born, and most importantly it wasn't scripted like almost everything before the 2000s. This unique opportunity to see what was like back then opened our eyes to our growth as humans with technology. Many of us will grow old, other will die sooner, but the future generations will have us as references the way we had Nelson. I just hope that we will continue our growth in the right direction and somewhere in the future someone will smile, because of us no matter if we are dead or alive.

Nelson Sullivan is being recognized more and more for the his incredible talent, being ahead of his time and also the warm and relatable personality that he projected through his medium. It's heart warming to know that young folks today acknowledge him and support his memory. And thanks for all of your videos, they are very enjoyable. Glad someone else has visited here paying tribute to Nelson's body of work. The guy didn't get beyond the front door in the last visit I saw c. 2017. I love that the front door and floors remain as they were in N's time there, and I like how you honoured him with the fish-eye lens, by the way! I don't know whether it's more surreal to see how the upper floor of 5, Ninth has been memorialised to Nelson with portraits and snapshots of his life flickering endlessly over that screen on the wall, or that, through him we may at any time pass through a door in to a long-gone era, and witness largely unedited, scenes from his life as it was in real-time. I sometimes think he captured much more than he realised through those recordings, and what they communicate to us is the importance of paying attention to our lives now, as they unravel, and to those around us, for we never know how precious those minutes might become in retrospect. Something about his work has touched so many of us, and goes to show that no man can know what his life may amount to in the end, or guess what effect his self-expression may have in the world, or how far the ripples will travel. I don't think they will ever stop. I, for one, will always raise a glass to Nelson, Blackout, Dick, Nancy, Blanche and everyone who made it all happen.
Absolutely incredible! Thank you for thinking to take us all into such an exquisite, memorable, historical place. I watch Nelson’s videos annually, if not every so monthly. I was but a child when his creative crew had a hold on the old city. I’ve been so interested in what happened to his old haunt and now I know. I’m definitely going to visit soon. How amazing that 40 years later the public can take their own tour, pick up his old phone and hear his actual melodic voice on the other end. So proud of the people who made that happen. Keeping his ever so magical spirit alive 💫✨💫

Thank you so much for this video. I have wondered what became of his home and very pleased to see his memory is being honored within the art community he was such a part of. When you came to the 3rd floor, it choked me up. I can not think of a more deserving man to be honored in such a beautiful way. I have watched so many videos and grown to love his beautiful spirit. He was so kind to everyone, always complimenting friends, found beauty all around him and always appeared so happy. But most of all, it was the love he had for Blackout and all his friends that really touches my heart. He was a very unique and beautiful soul. The love he had for his friends choked me up and when he spoke of Christina's passing, he brought tears to my eyes. He described her beautifully as he spoke of her memory and I wonder if he realized he was just as beautiful as his friend. He was such a brilliant and bright soul that still shines many years after his passing. Through his lens we are taken back to a time where he walked this earth and given us a priceless gift of allowing us to follow his life and experience 1980s new York in raw form. When I am feeling down, I come here to watch his videos. It's as I have a friend that is walking along side of me and taking me out for a night on the town to meet so many unique people. I read after his abrupt passing that friends cared for Blackout in his honor... I never had friends as he did. His videos make me smile. He enjoyed every single day of his life and he touched the hearts of everyone he encounter and those he never met, such as myself.

I'm glad to see Nelson Sullivan recognized for his videos of 1980s NY. A bit more about the life Nelson and his housemates enjoyed in the house would be a nice accompaniment to the video. I gather that about 4 people lived there, plus the dog Blackout. They and their friends were heavily involved in the local nightlife. Of the group living in the house, about the only one likely to be known to the general public today is RuPaul.
Earlier this morning I became a sub, watching your walk through crazy parts of NY. I had some free time now, went to go on a nelson sullivan binge for a few minutes(been doing that off and on since the news of michael aligs passing), and here you are at his house. Super sweet we get a look inside.. Reflected to his last vid with the backyard view. Thanks for doing this man! Nelson def had an appreciation of the arts it seems, so its nice that his home was converted to just that. Wish he was still alive and on youtube, but seems he'd be proud of others, such as yourself, for carrying the torch for him. Happy New Year!

Hello Actionkid! My interpretation of Nelsons quote "Today is July the 3rd and it's my last day of not having to run" could have been a reference to his new cable tv show that he was scheduled to start the very next week. I know that when it was announced that he would be hosting his own local access cable television show based on his videos the he quit his job working at the Carnegie Music Store. My guess is that he knew that he would be busy filming videos in the near future and no longer just for his own enjoyment.

The area that this house is in was previously a meat packaging and delivery market in the 80's before it got revitalized and gentrified to the trendy hang out square it is nowadays.
I really didn't know who Nelson Sullivan is/was, so I googled him. Thank you for taking your time to both educate/showcase his work and allows your audience to follow along on the tour of his home/office and now museum.
That is awesome I was in my 20s in the 80s and had the best time of my life I've watched all the videos and keep watching them over and over this is just amazing I love that they did this RIP🌹

Was so happy to see there was a floor dedicated to Nelson Sullivan. Such a talented guy and it is wonderful to watch all his tapes. He was, one of few who seemed to be inclusive with many,unlike most of the others in his films. He actually brought out the truth about what was going on in the 80s in gay community.
Nelson was so ahead of his time, coming from down south and having the NYC vibe in his blood, he knew he belonged in NYC at that time, so he documented everything and anything like he knew he was supposed to do so, I remember growing up in 2nd Ave in east village in the 80s, and I love his videos cause I can actually feel how it was at that time and see the streets how they were.
I discovered Nelson just yesterday after stumbling across a UA-cam video of one of his vlogs. I’ve watched quite a few now and am fascinated how ahead of his time he was. Sad he was taken too soon, but fantastic his memory has been remembered with such a cool little museum. Amazing to see how much has changed in 30 years around the area he lived too.

Nelson probably never dreamed that his home would eventually become a museum with a whole section dedicated to his life, which is so awesome and touching, and you can even see a portrait of him and Blackout. It was weird to see the backyard as it is now. I remember watching a video which I believe was taken on the last day of his life, where Lady Bunny had some burgers going on the BBQ in that yard. So surreal.
I was a very happy child during the years Nelson was doing his vlogging and those years are still so clear in my mind. Of course I was unaware of Nelson at the time, or Mama Ru or Lady Bunny, etc. But this was what I will always see as "my era". I miss the 80s.
Nice video, Nelson was the first guy to make vlogs in an analog era where people lived a way simpler life and were happy with one another. This happened way before most of us were born, and most importantly it wasn't scripted like almost everything before the 2000s. This unique opportunity to see what was like back then opened our eyes to our growth as humans with technology. Many of us will grow old, other will die sooner, but the future generations will have us as references the way we had Nelson. I just hope that we will continue our growth in the right direction and somewhere in the future someone will smile, because of us no matter if we are dead or alive.

Never been to New York, or the US even.
But I do know I would love to visit NY in the era documented by Nelson Sullivan.
Glad someone else has visited here paying tribute to Nelson's body of work. The guy didn't get beyond the front door in the last visit I saw c. 2017. I love that the front door and floors remain as they were in N's time there, and I like how you honoured him with the fish-eye lens, by the way!
I don't know whether it's more surreal to see how the upper floor of 5, Ninth has been memorialised to Nelson with portraits and snapshots of his life flickering endlessly over that screen on the wall, or that, through him we may at any time pass through a door in to a long-gone era, and witness largely unedited, scenes from his life as it was in real-time. I sometimes think he captured much more than he realised through those recordings, and what they communicate to us is the importance of paying attention to our lives now, as they unravel, and to those around us, for we never know how precious those minutes might become in retrospect.
Something about his work has touched so many of us, and goes to show that no man can know what his life may amount to in the end, or guess what effect his self-expression may have in the world, or how far the ripples will travel. I don't think they will ever stop.
I, for one, will always raise a glass to Nelson, Blackout, Dick, Nancy, Blanche and everyone who made it all happen.

Absolutely incredible! Thank you for thinking to take us all into such an exquisite, memorable, historical place. I watch Nelson’s videos annually, if not every so monthly. I was but a child when his creative crew had a hold on the old city. I’ve been so interested in what happened to his old haunt and now I know. I’m definitely going to visit soon. How amazing that 40 years later the public can take their own tour, pick up his old phone and hear his actual melodic voice on the other end. So proud of the people who made that happen. Keeping his ever so magical spirit alive 💫✨💫

Thank you so much for this video. I have wondered what became of his home and very pleased to see his memory is being honored within the art community he was such a part of. When you came to the 3rd floor, it choked me up. I can not think of a more deserving man to be honored in such a beautiful way. I have watched so many videos and grown to love his beautiful spirit. He was so kind to everyone, always complimenting friends, found beauty all around him and always appeared so happy. But most of all, it was the love he had for Blackout and all his friends that really touches my heart. He was a very unique and beautiful soul. The love he had for his friends choked me up and when he spoke of Christina's passing, he brought tears to my eyes. He described her beautifully as he spoke of her memory and I wonder if he realized he was just as beautiful as his friend. He was such a brilliant and bright soul that still shines many years after his passing. Through his lens we are taken back to a time where he walked this earth and given us a priceless gift of allowing us to follow his life and experience 1980s new York in raw form. When I am feeling down, I come here to watch his videos. It's as I have a friend that is walking along side of me and taking me out for a night on the town to meet so many unique people. I read after his abrupt passing that friends cared for Blackout in his honor... I never had friends as he did. His videos make me smile. He enjoyed every single day of his life and he touched the hearts of everyone he encounter and those he never met, such as myself.

The telephone seems to be one of the few things that was not stolen and sold after Nelson passed away.. Nelsons brother Mark, had to obtain a court order to evict the "characters" that were living there.. Nelson was a kind and generous person who was abused by the unseemly..

Nelson seemed like a really nice guy and he hung out with Ru Paul and other people from the industry and he was doing vlogging long before Internet and UA-cam, he was a true professional when it came to filming and he had respect and always asked if it was okay to film inside of an art gallery and other places that he and his friends would enter. RIP Nelson 💖

I'm glad to see Nelson Sullivan recognized for his videos of 1980s NY. A bit more about the life Nelson and his housemates enjoyed in the house would be a nice accompaniment to the video. I gather that about 4 people lived there, plus the dog Blackout. They and their friends were heavily involved in the local nightlife. Of the group living in the house, about the only one likely to be known to the general public today is RuPaul.

Earlier this morning I became a sub, watching your walk through crazy parts of NY. I had some free time now, went to go on a nelson sullivan binge for a few minutes(been doing that off and on since the news of michael aligs passing), and here you are at his house. Super sweet we get a look inside.. Reflected to his last vid with the backyard view. Thanks for doing this man! Nelson def had an appreciation of the arts it seems, so its nice that his home was converted to just that. Wish he was still alive and on youtube, but seems he'd be proud of others, such as yourself, for carrying the torch for him. Happy New Year!

Hello Actionkid! My interpretation of Nelsons quote "Today is July the 3rd and it's my last day of not having to run" could have been a reference to his new cable tv show that he was scheduled to start the very next week. I know that when it was announced that he would be hosting his own local access cable television show based on his videos the he quit his job working at the Carnegie Music Store. My guess is that he knew that he would be busy filming videos in the near future and no longer just for his own enjoyment.
