Scott, you do a very nice job producing content. Both the audio and video quality is good, and your narritive is brief, to the point, and effective. I'm a professional audio engineer, ( working concerts, shows, conventions for 39 years ), and I understand how difficult it is to explain tech to the "opinionated" masses. You strattle this hurtle very well, Scott. Nice job and thank you for your insight.
Thank you Keith. There's not to many people who understand how much work UA-cam is. I laugh inside when UA-cam marketers sell the venue as a "passive income" generator. There's nothing passive about UA-cam.
Yeah, I use both obs and vmix and your comparison of the two is spot on. I find somethings are easier and more efficient to do in obs than vmix. For me it all depends on what I’m trying to accomplish for the show I’m producing and then using the tool that will get the job done with efficiency. Great video!
I don't understand how vimx gives you that "professional feeling" when the app looks like shareware from 1995.. The first time I saw Vmix I thought the guy was joking. Why would someone make a pro software that looks like someone slapped it together in 20min.

Really great to see this comparison. You hit some of the basic points I'd be looking for. Thank you. I'm not sure I share your thoughts around layers in vMix. Though I would probably still give OBS the win for ease of use, vMix is pretty robust and simple enough once you get used to it. Bounding boxes for resizing are really truly my biggest pain with vMix. It would be great if that was added. You might have missed that the function of rotating the image had a Z with a grey square around it. You can, very unintuitively, click it and it cycles between X,Y,Z and spin the image in multiple directions. You can do some surprisingly cool things with that feature.
Rather than adding echo to your voice for emphasis, have you considered a bass boost? The echo on its own makes you sound a lot further away, which seems like the opposite of the intended "aural underlining".

Is OBS capable of globally putting an overlay on top of any scene/input? Is there a way to do this in OBS without repeating the logo in each scene? Thanks!

@@ScottFichter emm sorry, i'm not english, i told us not to speak direct to you. The comparison you made of the two programs is excellent, but you have not taken into account the needs of the professional, the review is seen more by the eyes of those who stream unpaid. In these comparisons, the weight of the software and therefore the technical performance should be taken into account.
Vmix Upgrade purchase is a little cheaper than the main purchase... also maybe next time you could have add a blank item in vmix than add those images 1 first top, 2 top over 1, 3 top over 2, and so on
Scott you explained in the video that there is a (non intuitive) way to bring chat messages to OBS as you do with vmix social. Could you explain how you do it?
just to be clear, there is a way to do instant replay with slow Mo in OBS, but you need a plug-in, it’s called replay source, I believe the creator is exiletrue.
Thank you for this, I really do enjoy your videos they are really helpful, but I think there is deliberate bias for OBS here 😀. I use and love both OBS and Vmix and find both softwares necessary depending of what I need at the time. You missed out on the fact the Vmix has excellent built in animated lower thirds, also you can stream to multiple platforms simultaneously.OBS only just started offering this with a plugin for version 26 upgrade. Vmix can integrate and connect with a participants in a live show who is in another country with Vmix call. There are other plus’ for Vmix but I’ll stop there. However, I do use OBS more 😁. Keep up the good work though.
You would be correct about the bias. I must admit that vMix is a POWERHOUSE. The only think that stops me from jumping in 100% is the cost and how the layers work. If they could figure those two things out, I'd be all in.
There's a pile of features that I did not cover for both. The call in feature was one I wanted to cover but didn't because the video would be close to 20 minutes long. If the numbers are showing what I think they are showing for this video, there will be more on this topic. MUCH MORE! Thanks for the damn good comment my friend. I appreciate the intelligence and terrific logic.
hi scott , I just wanted to thank you for your tutorials and lessons , so far I learned lots of things from you and lots of techniques in obs , I watched so many videos before but no one goes to the point and answers my questions as fast as you . so please keep up and continue your great job ❤️
I feel you have a bias against vMix. Yes OBS has a lot of plugins, but vMix has a lot of stuff already built in. Shouldn't that count for something? You don't have to piece together all kinds of plugins to make stuff work. Also the fact that the win for Instant Replay goes to OBS purely based on money is not consistent with your "Easy wins every single time" statement @ 13:43. That should've been a win for vMix hands down. It really comes down to the fact that OBS has a different demographic than vMix. I wouldn't want to go back to OBS in my church for example, because when you want to go a little more professional, vMix is the better option. Of course, this is my opinion after having used both.
OBS works well with Linux. Ubuntu has deb packages and PPAs that work well. Centos/RHEL Linux you have to compile. There is a "how-to" on the OBS page on how to install. I have noticed that some features ( such as user addible docks for Animated Lower Third don't work under ubuntu ... It works in CentoOS but has some issues. There seems to be differences in the code base between Deb linux versions vs what is available for RHEL based distros... ( looks like a git pull from bleeding edge...) I did catch the "Slow mo" thing.. It does ( sorta ) have slo-mo if you take the media itself and slow it down in the source.. There maybe a way to create a script that would allow ramping... Anyway..Love your content.. Keep on Keepin' on . (oh .. yeah .. I realize that this is about a year old..
The good old program Camtwist is what I like but it is a little hard on your cpu and is mac only and cannot run well on newer mac os. It still see the Atem Mini though so there are ways to make stuff work. There is no encoder in it so you would need something like the old Flash Media Live Encoder which is a bit old too but still works good on most sites you cast to and defenately if you are recording to disc. You need a capturecard too but you need that with every program that do not use USB. The next best is OBS and it also can see the Atem Mini. What the heck is vmix? The combo Atem Mini any model including the old Atem TVS and the today very cheap used capture card Intensity Pro you pretty much get an unlimited setup for audio and a very powerful multicam setup for really cheap.
For lack of a better play on words, we are one of your “above average” viewers that does broadcast sporting events 😎 You can indeed set up slow motion instant replay in OBS. After the replay buffer is set up to your preferences, each time you save a replay (by clicking the down arrow) it saves that video to your designated file location. When we set up our instant replay scene, we add the media source that browses to the file location for that saved video, then all you have to do is drag the scrubber bar that’s designated to the playback speed of that video/media source. Drag it to the left to slow down the playback, or to the right to speed up the playback. We are actually still tinkering with a few things to make it work for us, the way we want it to work in regards to a sports broadcast, but for someone who just wants a basic slow motion replay - that’s how it would be done
thank you for this video. My heart rate now has to come down first because of the typical american over-hyped way of presenting but the content was worth it for this one time. I have to lay down for a while and rest. :)
Hi Thanks for the video, just want to share some of my experience on both software OBS is a great FREE software for a gamer who want to broadcast their games. but if you use OBS on a whole program like awards night and company events. all other video from other SCENE that hasto be played later on the show will buffer terribly. and GREEN SCREEN in OBS is not that good unlike vMix. But again both softwares are great depending on what you need! sorry for the grammar! :)
@@ScottFichter yes vmix is pricey. In the end it is a way better platform. With OBS you have to Frankenstein things together in order to get guests on. You need to incorporate zoom/skype then, download vb cable to do a mix minus, and hope things run smoothly or it will mess up the scene setup. Vmix call is way easier and you can isolate the guest to make better scenes. The mix minus is build into vmix so no need to use vb cable. Everything flows better. Obs is only decent for gamers and amateurs with basic needs. With vmix you are paying for the set it and forget it functionality that allows you to focus on the show. It’s very easy to learn as well, you just need to take a couple days watching UA-cam tutorials. Plugins in obs are great but you don’t need to have plugins in Vmix to do the same things. You really should take more time to experiment with it before you claim OBS is so much better. I’ve used both and had to leave obs because I kept hitting walls with the functionality.

"as of this moment UA-cam and Twitch don't support this feature" Your energy is 15 out of 10, your review 3 out of 10 Also with NDI you can practically use vmix, obs AND CasperCG in 1 workflow in 1 system
@@ScottFichter i think he's referring to Desktop Capture not the actual vmix. No Mac support should have been your first mention, Scott. that's the 3rd time you got me!
Very Biased comparison. When the replay feature was a clear winner, you moved the goal post, and said vmix lost because of cost.... that is not what you were comparing. Then at the end you moved to plugins, which is actually a list of things that OBS can not do. I use both programs and both have their strengths. I noticed you didn't mention the ability to bring in guest, something only vmix can do. Also you did not mention that some OBS plugins cost money. The videos nicely done, but don't pretend to be objective when you are clearly not. Also I would think that tech support is worth something. You can also get a subscription for vmix which is $60 per month that give you all the access to the $1200 version. One place where OBS kicks vmix but is the ease and support of stream deck, vmix does it but not as smoothly.
I agree... It has some workflow issues. I like its multuview ability (so I can see all of my cameras at once) and can output them onto an extrernal monitor. Thanks for your channel... I'll admit, I've only used pretty much vanilla obs... It's cool to see the plugins and stuff. It's a bit complicated getting plugins installed and working in obs... But I also understand open source. It's a tool for the people... BY the people. So there are going to be inconsistencies with the tools and workflows. It's great, though, that there is such a powerful free tool available. I'll keep using vmix for my paying clients and learning obs for my more 'adventurous' clients. :)
VMix = hundreds of dollars OBS = Free If you care about a professional broadcast then all you have to do is learn how to use OBS. It puts VMix to shame if you take the time to learn how OBS works
@@MSPNDTV the instant replay system built into vMix alone is an incredible value. Tell me about instant replay in OBS?..... OBS is so clunky and so far from how traditional switcher are, you will struggle to bring new people up to speed if they have any experience running traditional video switchers
@@HigherPhoto see our other comment, it basically answers your questions. As far as it being “clunky” it’s only clunky if you don’t understand how to properly set it up. Our instant replays are equivalent to the instant replays you see on TV sports broadcasts.
OBS is great for everyday use. VMIX is professional multicam live broadcast software. Some things aren't necessarily as EASY to do... But there's much more flexibility in most cases. I do have a 1200 dollar vmix pro license that I use professionally. And I also use obs for a lot of stuff too.
I think Vmix is easier because all the bases are covered. The only thing that I don't like about the software is how the assets are organized for the stream. Other than that the software is really good.
Imagine a world where xsplit is less resource intensive than OBS. LOL. If OBS was really causing legitimate issues (whether lack of adequate hardware or bad settings or something) xsplit would not the move. It would make it worse. I don't know for sure, but this really sounds like xsplit fanboyism. Next we'll be talking about how Avermemdia software is awesome lol.
Well....I'm not sure.... possibly yes, I have yet to scratch the surface with feature comparisons. For example, I did not discuss the phone call in feature. I will say this if you don't want to tinker vMix is the winner for sure. I'll give you that. Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it.
Vmix is the professional software solution of choice. I use it on a regular basis. But it is not free. OBS rules if you're looking for a free solution.

Yo Scott your still the man giving out valuable information. I appreciate you.
Be blessed brother....Ras-pect
Rasta B TV! It's good to see you my friend. Thanks for the knod! I hope you are well.
With vmix you can get a subscription ($50a monthly) and you get full access to all features
Does anyone remember OBS Studio on the mac that was essentially basic Vmix for free?
for touring/band streaming i like to use vmix😀
actually about that live chat functionality OBS has that it has to be set up as concreate service provider but there is one have used it. the path is you go to tools auto setup and undet that you use youtube twitch or vhat ewer service (not custome) you log in nad then automaticly you get a chat window
Was wondering what the fuss is about vmix and this video answered that.
It's good software and a good company. It just comes from another world. The corporate world.
we had to talk about how much the processor and the GPU take up both in OBS and VMIX
Err.. who's "We" is that me?
@@ScottFichter emm sorry, i'm not english, i told us not to speak direct to you. The comparison you made of the two programs is excellent, but you have not taken into account the needs of the professional, the review is seen more by the eyes of those who stream unpaid. In these comparisons, the weight of the software and therefore the technical performance should be taken into account.
@@FrancoAversa You make a good point. I could probably make 3 more comparison videos based on various capabilities and system resource usage etc.
@@ScottFichter Great, thanks !!
Vmix Upgrade purchase is a little cheaper than the main purchase... also maybe next time you could have add a blank item in vmix than add those images 1 first top, 2 top over 1, 3 top over 2, and so on
Agree, thanks Bryan. I may do another comparison down the road.
Scott you explained in the video that there is a (non intuitive) way to bring chat messages to OBS as you do with vmix social. Could you explain how you do it?
I'm going to make a video about this.
@@ScottFichter thank you. Your videos are just great and I like your humble attitude on how you respond to people. Blessings
You can generate the asset from streamlabs or streamelements in the console panels of those sites.
just to be clear, there is a way to do instant replay with slow Mo in OBS, but you need a plug-in, it’s called replay source, I believe the creator is exiletrue.
I think it's this. obsproject.com/forum/resources/replay-source.686/
One interesting feature vMix seems to have is a possibility to stream simultaneously to 3 different services
YES! This is a huge win for Vmix. I need to make a video about how to do this with OBS.
Yup and you can also do that with OBS...
Thanks so Much, your Awesome
Alright this was a lot more entertaining than I thought it’d be, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The obs have a chat page on the software too
hi scott , I just wanted to thank you for your tutorials and lessons , so far I learned lots of things from you and lots of techniques in obs , I watched so many videos before but no one goes to the point and answers my questions as fast as you . so please keep up and continue your great job ❤️
You're very welcome Bourse Therapy. I'm here to serve. ROCK ON!
Great comment Guido. I value your opinion.
11:05 Oh god, I thought you were about to name it Meat Spin....
thank you
Welcome!
I'm using in Linux obs and works very fast compare to windows 10...
Excellent
Thank you so much sir. 😁
Thanks Android! You're welcome!
( looks like a git pull from bleeding edge...)
I did catch the "Slow mo" thing.. It does ( sorta ) have slo-mo if you take the media itself and slow it down in the source.. There maybe a way to create a script that would allow ramping... Anyway..Love your content.. Keep on Keepin' on . (oh .. yeah .. I realize that this is about a year old..
Where are u seeing those OBS script. Add-on and plugging ? # numbers 🔢
Are you wanting to download scripts, plugins and tools? Just go here. obsproject.com/forum/ look at the resources section.
Sir How To Make Custom virtual studio for vmix full tutorial please 🥺
I got a project please please 🥺 help me o
Aayush Sah. Sorry can't do it. Ping a creator who specializes in VMIX. My hands are tied.
Great video! I thought you said "dragon drop" at first.
HA!
Bahahaha same!!
they both equal for me because i love them both :)
Great comment!
VMix is also and Audio and Video Controller for Ipdas
Martyn, can you throw me a link for ipdas?
Hey Scott, i am using countdown .lua
Thanks Mike, I'll take a look.
FREE *VS* MONEY
YEP!
Excellent
DOES obs do ISO recording? Vmix smokes this with HIGH quality ISO recording of multicamera recording
thank you for this video. My heart rate now has to come down first because of the typical american over-hyped way of presenting but the content was worth it for this one time. I have to lay down for a while and rest. :)
Parallels desktop Windows emulator on a M1 Max Macbook Pro works fine, but again $$$. OBS is however natively supported.
scrub bar: OBS seems do not fully follow the scrub like the vMIX one does ...
Hi Thanks for the video, just want to share some of my experience on both software
OBS is a great FREE software for a gamer who want to broadcast their games. but if you use OBS on a whole program like awards night and company events. all other video from other SCENE that hasto be played later on the show will buffer terribly. and GREEN SCREEN in OBS is not that good unlike vMix. But again both softwares are great depending on what you need! sorry for the grammar! :)
I agree with you.
"Lets meet the speaker for tonights presentation"
OH! I have the PERFECT STINGER for that one!
Jason, you guys bring it at your channel!
This was helpful. I need to send the TriCaster in for repair, and I need something now. I was wonder about Vmix vs OBS.
Awesome! Thanks for the great comment.
@@ScottFichter You channel seems fun
I will be around here a lot this weekend. Crash course in OBS. Thanks for all the videos.
@@kjvisual7 You're super welcome Ken. Talk to you later.
That is cool Thanks for your great efforts.
Wish to find the opposite way voice to txt life on OBS !!!
This may be possible with a website. I'll look around for a solution. If you find a site that can convert audio to text fast, let me know.
@@ScottFichter i am so thankful to your care and great videos you posting
Wirecast vs vmix please !
WOAH! It costs $600 bucks. I'd love to make a comparison but damn, it's too expensive. Is there a trial version?
@@ScottFichter yes, as far as it’s written on their website they a watermarked trial version for free.
ROFLMAO U could do comedy and B a comedian !!
"IT's like being born without an Arm U don't even miss it !!!"
Vmix is way better.
In my opinion it's best for corporations not for YT livestreamers.
I was ❤️ N the video until u blast me with the meat 🤣.. aah c'mon smokie.
HA! You don't like meat? Ha Ha! Great to hear from you Indi.
OBS works well on Linux
What's PiNG?! 🤣
"SRT is the new feature to send data to UA-cam and Twitch"... A FeW mOmEnTs LaTeR... "as of this moment UA-cam and Twitch don't support this feature"
Your energy is 15 out of 10, your review 3 out of 10
Also with NDI you can practically use vmix, obs AND CasperCG in 1 workflow in 1 system
.
Ahh so basically the only things VMix does better are expensive and things no one actually uses lol.
They are useful for corporate events and stuff.
@@IntheDAW I mean.. more than OBS
I see that vmix have a Mac download 🤷🏻♂️
No way! What?
@@ScottFichter i think he's referring to Desktop Capture not the actual vmix. No Mac support should have been your first mention, Scott. that's the 3rd time you got me!
@@freakyrandy Sorry bro it was not intentional. I'm not that smart. media.giphy.com/media/bFpivMTykBhoj7gWmr/giphy.mp4
Yes, multiview is awesome. Stay in touch man.
vMix FTW if you actually care about professional broadcast.
Hmm hmm.
VMix = hundreds of dollars
OBS = Free
If you care about a professional broadcast then all you have to do is learn how to use OBS.
@@MSPNDTV DO YOU USE VMIX OFTEN
OBS is great for everyday use. VMIX is professional multicam live broadcast software. Some things aren't necessarily as EASY to do... But there's much more flexibility in most cases.
I do have a 1200 dollar vmix pro license that I use professionally. And I also use obs for a lot of stuff too.
I think Vmix is easier because all the bases are covered. The only thing that I don't like about the software is how the assets are organized for the stream. Other than that the software is really good.
@@ScottFichter I AGREE TO THAT IN A CERTAIN WAY THOU
Don't ever spend $700 on Vmix. If you want to spend that money... Buy Resolume.
Unless you are doing remote sessions or feeds... In which case vMix is the choice or you'll need some hardware like the blackmagic streaming bridge.
If your a corporation the money is worth it. If you a dude working on developing a name for yourself, OBS is the way to go.
OBS works perfect on Linux (ubuntu) and the most Plugins are also avalible for it.
This is good news. Does the "Virtual Cam" plugin work?
@@ScottFichter never tried it but I‘ll find it out soon. Will answer than.
@@ScottFichter The Virtual Cam Plugin works only on Windows but to do it on Linux you need to use: github.com/CatxFish/obs-v4l2sink
I had too uninstall OBS it is very buggy it has caused my computer to freeze and crash while streaming.
Did you go with vMix? How did it work for you?
I am using xsplit right now...
@@sci-fiuniverse7493 Oh yea I've heard about that software. I need to make a video about it.
Next we'll be talking about how Avermemdia software is awesome lol.
bro this guy so annoying with his voice effects
I agree the video sucks in most ways except for the content. I had to struggle my way through it but it was worth it because of the content :)
vmix is king... just admit it
Well....I'm not sure.... possibly yes, I have yet to scratch the surface with feature comparisons. For example, I did not discuss the phone call in feature. I will say this if you don't want to tinker vMix is the winner for sure. I'll give you that. Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it.
@@ScottFichter With OBS, all you have to do is import audio from either a Zoom call or a Discord call. It's an incredibly easy work-around.
