- The Musician So Good, She Replaced Minecraft’s C418...
Lena Raine has managed to replace c418 for Minecraft's Composer slot in just over 5 years. But from barely breaking even to becoming an icon for millions. How she did it will shock you... I Spent about 200 hours creating this video and every element in it so if you could sub or follow elsewhere it would really mean a lot.

C418 was perfect for Notch's Minecraft. An oasis of creativity, fun memories with friends and the joy of discovery. A brand-new, beautiful and frightening world of wonders, ready for you to sink hundreds upon hundreds of hours into. A beautiful piece of art, made by a passionate artist.
Lena is perfect for Microsoft's Minecraft. A soulless, corporate husk devoid of direction, designed to make as much money as possible through cutting corners, with lazy devs and corporate slaves calling themselves "musicians", who in reality are ready to stab their fellow colleague in the back for a crumb of that multi-trillion company's dollar.
This game was gone after Microsoft bought it, and the complete spit on the face of the musican who made this game what it used to be, was the final nail in the coffin.
I have zero respect for Lena and other greedy, pathetic corporate bootlickers who stole Rosenfeld's place.
@@April480p What
The title and thumbnail are a little misleading but it's very nice to learn about Lena Raine and her history.
ALso cool, I didn't know there was a whole interview about her, how did I miss this?!?!
His*
A little misleading is an understatement
I like some of Lena Raines Minecraft music but there is something off about it compared the C418’s. Like whenever you hear Moog City, Sweden wet hands, blocks, or Minecraft. You know what each of those songs are. But with the new Minecraft music it all just sounds the same (to at least me) like whenever you hear infinite amethyst, left to bloom, wending or floating dream. You could swap any of those songs and nobody would notice. But a ome of this is probably just nostalgia for C418’s old work.
EDIT: this could also be because Minecraft gets more music every update now instead of every few updates.
This. I honestly do like a lot of the music, but it feels like a *shift* in change rather than an evolution, which is not inherently Lena's fault. That falls into the overall design of the game and her music's incorporation.
I definitely feel it's the nostalgia factor that affects how c418's music impacts you.
Some of the older Lena Raine songs for me personally are starting to become nostalgic for me, and while of course they are different some what, they are definitely minecraft.
You've heard those songs by C418 hundreds and hundreds of times over several years. Given time, I feel Lena's work will also stand out just as much.
@varunagrawal7036 i just installed a music pack called "recued" which will ideally give me a chance to listen to her and the other new non c418 music along side the c418 music at a reasonable balance. 👍
She is at her best when not trying to emulate C418s overworld music. This can be seen clear as day in the nether and ancient citys were she has full creativ freedom.
I think the argument of "C418 is better than Lean Raine" or vise versa is stupid. Both of them are amazing artists, with their own great style.
I don't think people are arguing who's music is fundamentally better, but more so who's music is better for minecraft
In my opinion C418s music is legendary and will never be beaten, it was perfect for what Minecraft was, if Minecrafts soul was in the form of music that was C418s music.
Lean Raines music is really good, and sometimes i think she makes a soundtrack that fits really well. But overall, it doesn't capture Minecrafts soul nearly as perfectly. She makes good music, but the question is does she make good Minecraft music? Too that I say, yes i think she does at times, but C418s was perfect and pretty much every single soundtrack he made was iconic and perfect for what Minecraft is. His music heightened the experience by alot and that's what's important to recognise

i love listening to otherside and infinite amethyst. but then bloody mojang yet again changed the song makers twice. it went from lena to samuel amberg. then from samuel to aron cheif. and then they kept aron, whilst also bringing back lena for both the original and music box version of creator. @@corneliusmcmuffin3256 You know what, fair point. I can see where you’re coming from.
"Infinite Amethyst" is ironically what solidified to me the notion that no one can replace C418 and no composer will ever capture the soul of Minecraft again. It's easily her magnum opus for Minecraft and yet it's alien. It doesn't have the core of Minecraft: the existential dread that infinite possibilities represents.
Her music isn't a theme for Minecraft so much as it was a theme for someone's vision of Minecraft as they craft it into their image for us to enjoy. It forgets that Minecraft is a canvas for players to paint on, not for an artist to express themselves and then sell to the masses. It's not corporate persay, but it's too full of humanity and the need to acknowledge either the new direction of Minecraft or the feelings the old players still have for it. What's lost is what Minecraft was and what still lies underneath the veneer of Caves and Cliffs or even the earlier Exploration updates. Infinite possibilities rather than select, curated, multiplex choices.
If you want to argue that her music is better for new Minecraft, I'd agree. But new Minecraft and the core of Minecraft are no longer one in the same. That's why so many believe the game has lost its soul. In more ways than one, it truly has.
"Try not to chase greed challenge" microsoft: Impossible

honestly, Lena Rain's music is one of these few things that not irritates me in new Minecraft. it's lovely!
but yes, Mojang, give us back C418. there is still place for a third album in this game..
the soundtrack C418 composed for this game is an absolute masterclass and in my opinion singlehandedly created the strange lonesome semi surrealist "feel" of old minecraft. Lena's music doesn't jump out to me from a narrative or atmospheric context like C418's soundtrack did. It's actually legit one of the best video game soundtracks ever made when judged as a soundtrack, not as an album (judging songs based entirely on how they add to the game experience and your emotions as you play, not as songs themselves). The only other soundtrack I can think of that comes close in this regard is Yume Nikki's soundtrack as it similarily to minecraft's also singlehandedly creates Yume Nikki's unique & otherworldly atmosphere and makes you feel something special while playing you would not be able to feel without the soundtrack.
nobody can replace C418 in my heart but her music is good
My exact thoughts
Honestly, I like Lena's music... as well as the other new musicians... but 90% of it really doesn't fit Minecraft. The sudden sharp starts to the music, the high-frequencies, the lack of soft piano, the smooth crescendos, practically non-existent. Plus, the instant feeling of nostalgia, like you're traveling a world you've forgotten, is practically missing.
I barely finished the main story of Celeste a few days ago and already loved Lena’s OSTs. Realizing that she’s adding her own contributions to Minecraft is just awesome.
This is probably the worst rage bait video I've had the displeasure of clicking on.

Minecraft fans are so stuck in the past. They struggle so hard to see any form of change in what they see as "perfect," so when c418 stopped making music for the game, these people got it in their head that whoever made more music needed to make it exactly like the old stuff. No, Lena's music isnt exactly like c418 music, but it doesnt need to be. It creates a wonderful effect regardless. People love to judge her work and only ever rate her music as it compares to c418, which isnt fair. Her music still creates wonderful images in my mind and brings back memories of my time playing Minecraft. Her use of motifs and ambience still very much carries many attributes of c418's work, but its meant to be new and different at the same time.
c418 never stopped making music for the game it was microsoft who didnt let him to make music for it
@@alen4704I think it’s this that leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Lena and C418 have entirely different methodologies and only one of them lined up with a profit driven corporation. Lena wants to share her music influence others and cares little about ownership of her music, just the impact, c418 wants to own his music and it’s a completely reasonable thing to want, he doesn’t do it for the money or fame but out of the craft itself. They are 2 respectable people but one gets shafted because of greed. It’s sad but we don’t live in a perfect world.

First comment I've seen that doesn't insult Lena for being trans
actually🤓 in the beginning you got the timeline wrong, she used to work for other bigger games and companies like ubisoft and guild wars and then she got called for celeste in 2016-17, which was like the thing that made her famous and then she got hired by minecraft to make the music for the nether update in 2019-20, to only then make a few guest songs for deltarune with the game releasing in 2021, also making the music for chicory a colorul tale in 2021 and now working on beastieball by the same guys who made chicory, with also some other stuff i forgot to mention
How is Deltarune a stepping stone to Celeste?
Celeste came out in 2018, but Lena only worked on chapter 2.

Nah.
Maybe it's because I've started playing Minecraft really late, but I like both composers take on it. It doesn't seem to be something as brutally shifting in mood like the devicive art change proposal way back in the early patches when Notch was really helming things mostly by himself with some additional help. Most of the music I've listened to so far seem to respect where the game started, wanting to make "Minecraft" fitting songs which was always a concern by Notch and C418 back when in IRCs they'd almost decide to not include music because it's hard to make tracks that don't pigeonholed people into one set emotion, just as much as it's hard to compose for open world games where you can't control what the player is doing or in what sequence.
There is a lot of misinformation on Lena here. First of all Lena studied at Cornish not USC. Second, Celeste released in 2018, she released her first minecraft music in 2020 and deltarune chapter 2 released in 2021. The timeline you created seems very inaccurate. You don't even mention any previous projects before Celeste like Guild Wars 2 (which is a HUGE one). There are a couple more things that don't seem to be accurate and is mindless speculation. I saw a comment that cleared up some stuff, but I wanna add more to that from what I've heard and read. It wasn't that Lena was struggling to find work as a composer it's more that I don't think she was actively composing for games at the time. She was working at ArenaNet as a game designer and was a tester for nintendo at some point and probably just did music on her own time. She did write a few game soundtracks before Celeste, but Celeste seems like it was the stepping stone to becoming a full time freelancer which led to all the other opportunities she's had
When I heard Infinite Amethyst by Lena for the first time it felt Nostalgic & already Iconic from a first listen. Perfect for Minecraft. It's a shame you can only hear it in Lush Caves as the track is that good, wouldn't mind if it played just anywhere in the overworld aside the deep dark.

i like Lena Raine's minecraft music.
the only one i think might not fit the game perfectly is the recent track "Eld Unknown" because i feel it may be too active and tense for most situations.
i think the best non-C418 minecraft track currently might be Featherfall by Aaron Cherof. It's very soft, rhythmic and entrancing. Maybe i just feel it suits the game because it's closest to C418, but i do think it works super well for what minecraft is. Komorebi by Kumi Tanioka is amazing too, despite being differently composed/arranged to Featherfall and the C418 music. Those examples are all recently released tracks though so there may be some recency bias.
and of course Lena Raine's nether update soundtrack fits the dimension incredibly well.
i think in the two camps of "C418 vs Lena Raine" i'm somewhere in the middle. i think C418's style generally works best for the game, but i understand that Minecraft is an ever evolving game, and that includes the music. I welcome change but i'm also naturally skeptical towards the new music, and i won't say any new music is bad just for not being C418.
I watch a video, look in the comment and of course... transphobia.
Deal with it
I saw someone say that Lena wasn’t “A real woman”
@@liampemberton9320 because he isn't. A woman cannot be man and man cannot be a woman no matter how many surgeries they get how many drugs they take. Sorry, that's how life works
@@theoneandonlyufomini-bot they can't be a cis woman*
Maybe learn the difference between gender and sex.
@@theoneandonlyufomini-bot she is a woman! and a real one at that!
I remember watching Stampy Cat, my first ever Minecraft UA-camr I watched when I was 4 in 2014, sounds a bit too young arguably. But neither the less, over those videos, I would hear C418’s Haggstorm OST. It had a beautiful and peaceful vibe, when listening to it the first time, it felt nostalgic and feels more nostalgic when hearing it today.
Music
The OG fallout Lord
Tis I
Why have i seen like 40 videos with this thumbnail style
the new minecraft songs sound like stardew valley ost, not bc the way the music is but the instruments makes me remember stardew valley
Maybe I'm out of the loop.... C418 isn't here anymore? I've never heard of Lena Raine....
call me a flithy casual or something idk
C418's music is still in the game but he's not making music for Minecraft anymore. I'd say Lena Raine is a pretty well-known composer though
@@marbles4375 ah ok, thanks!
@@flookaraz np!!
I mean i also prefer the c418 albums but i wouldnt say that lenas albums are bad they are still good but i wish they would keep working with c418 and they could collab and combine both their ideas
As a musician i love both c418 and lena respectively, although they have two very different styles, and it seems most of the hate towards lena is directed less about her music and about how she identifies. Which is just sad.
exactly. this is just ragebait for transphobia
Lena, kudos for doing that, for composing
0:30 does anyone know what song this is? I hear it a lot but I haven’t been able to find it.
It’s called Hide - CS01
I personally like Lena Raine's music more to be honest as it captures a fantasy vibes of minecraft with shaders. Unlike C418 his music it feels like a classic minecraft without shaders. My favorite music of C418 is the Aria Math.
I mean, if anyone was set to take the stand of such an iconic composer, I'd say the one who composed the music of f***ing _Celeste_ is a good bet
Autism
Lmao, no. The answer is nobody. Nobody can replace someone, don't think like an idiot.
One reason why people did't initially like Lena Raine making music for Minecraft is, while Lena did a banger job in Celeste, it took a while until she adapted to Minecraft, her first musics in the nether and caves n cliffs updates didn't fit the game at all, but now in Tricky Trials we're seeing some good music an i hope it keeps that way.
C418 absolutely nailed the eerie, boundless survival experience that Minecraft is.. or was, considering that most of the content Mojang add nowadays is more for marketing purposes than actual gameplay effect.
