  • Singapore is a relatively young city-state that’s about 74% Chinese, 14% Malay, and 9% Indian. That means they have no single official language and very little in the way of official national symbols. But because the culture of this area goes back at least a thousand years, the one thing you’ll find that is purely Singaporean is its food. And our family is out to sample the full range, from authentic food stalls to Michelin starred dishes. This is the 8th country, 3rd continent, and 18th culture we’ve experienced so far this year, and we brought our appetites. So let’s start devouring.

    ABOUT US.
We’re the Lockwoods: a family with 3 kids, 5 careers, and endless passion for adventure. Two years ago, we decided it was time for Phil's ad agency to abandon the in-person, 5-day workweek. So they 86’d the office and work hours, allowing our own family to start traveling almost constantly. We now work, school, and explore in a different place every week-from our own mountain and beach homes to exotic villas, resorts, and yachts around the world. As we experience and support diverse cultures, we hope to inspire more families to design a life of freedom and adventure.
Because there’s a new American Dream. It’s one that’s void of templated expectations, templated career paths, templated education, templated families, templated homes, and templated lives. Freedom is no longer an American tagline-it’s just the new, global way of life.
Every day that you spend doing something that doesn’t fulfill you to your core, you’re living your life on pause. You’re deferring genuine family time with no guarantee that there will be a tomorrow or a someday. Some people follow that mentality their entire lives. We’ve chosen to never live that way again.
We appreciate you following our journey. The more our channel grows, the more time we can spend traveling to more locations, contributing to these cultures, highlighting local businesses, and sharing inspiring stories from these communities. So please consider liking, commenting, and subscribing so that you can stick with us for the long haul.

You're spot on... the otah on the endive, it is fish cake, very similar to the fish ball you had earlier, except that instead of shaping it into a ball; otah is spiced, minced fish paste that is usually wrapped in banana leaf and baked over a charcoal fire... that's the traditional method of preparation.

Interesting side note about cab drivers being ex-military. But actually since Singapore has conscription for all male citizens, it's not just the cab drivers who you'll find are ex-military. Basically all Singaporean males in any industry are ex-military and most will still be in the Reserves!

    Just FYI,
7:06 fishball is essentially a mixture of fish meat and flour and salt. The little cut red chilli are locally known as “chilli padi” a Malay term.
9:33 the term “Peranakan” generally refers to a person of mixed Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage. Many Singapore Peranakans trace their origins to 15th-century Malacca, where their ancestors were thought to be Chinese traders who married local women. Peranakan men are known as baba, while the women are known as nonya (or nyonya).1 From the second half of the 19th century to the mid-20th century, Peranakans were also known as the Straits Chinese, as they were born in the Straits Settlements. While some Peranakans have retained their cultural practices, many have assimilated into the larger Chinese community today.

We’re in the Philippines now but spending one more day in Singapore before heading stateside for a couple of weeks and then back to San Miguel. But, yes-we knew SE Asia content was popular so we decided to invest a lot to get over here for 3 weeks of trave and filming to get things back on trackl. 0:09 Just a minor “correction” about our official language(s). In Singapore four languages -- Malay, Chinese,Tamil and English are official and equal languages. Malay is our National Language. Although de jure Malay is the national language, English is de facto the official main (business) language and is officially the main language of instruction in all school subjects except for Mother Tongue (second language) lessons in education system.

Thank you! They are great kids 🤩. Colt is much more curious and open to trying anything. He also naturally has an amazing palette and can identify ingredients in food much better than we can. Brooklyn is actually a very picky eater. We never force her to try something if she doesn’t want to, we just encourage. She sometimes gets curious too but she’s much more sensitive. I think the key is exposing kids to new foods and waiting until they’re ready on their own.

husband speaking - no matter the noise, kids can drop off anywhere. Our son, about age 3 in the PH, could sleep while we were out no matter the street noise. Have
you come across any culture, besides the PH. that like to eat with their hands - no flat ware ? One of my first trips to Cebu, my wife's Aunt took us to a restaurant that
was set up for tourists to TRY eating with their fingers only. Plates were usually banana leaves, rice, meat of some kind, veggies, other unknown items to me, - except for
finger food, I don't eat with my hands. So my wife asked for some kind of utensil - they had none, but came out with a huge serving spoon. Peso exchange was 7 to $1. at this time.

If I remember correctly, they start serving at 11am and are usually sold out before 1.30pm.

husband = P S more detail no wedding ring for Erin in Singapore. my wife went to Cebu for the wedding of one of her very rich friends daughter. They took most of the
wedding VIP guests to Singapore where the husband grew up. She had learned her lesson - no bling - I had to stay home and work and run her day care. Three times she
went off to the PH, I had to take my 5 week vacation to stay home and care for her kids. I changed more diapers than the moms did, I'm sure.

When King Tut's gold mask came to Seattle, a lady greeter at the entrance had a big coffee can with her, gum goes in here. When my brother was 4 or 5 years old ( I
wasn't around yet ) sitting at a dime store counter, brother looked under the counter - " Oh mama, look at all the gum. " About 1941/ Dennis K.
