Shop with me in today's video as I show Instacart's new app update that affecting some shoppers in different parts of the country, but not all. This new app update is limiting the number of batches in the queue and forcing shoppers to drive longer distances. The Instacart Algorithm is rewarding some shoppers and restricting others. It's a frustrating update with no transparency from Instacart, as usual.

You are BLESSED to have orders like that!! I would accept them in a heartbeat even a $30 on for 50 items i would take. Here in Greenville SC even a $20 order will disappear in a fraction of a second.
I am in GA an my eyes are popping at the $60 batches! I think a $30 one is heaven!
I’ve found that the higher dollar amount is not always the best batch. It’s tempting to see a high dollar number and quickly swipe, when in truth two smaller batches back to back, can make up a similar amount, sometimes even resulting in a higher payout. The variety can be fun instead of just staying in one store. Thanks for your honesty, Jen, and teaching these lessons.

Omgosh so I’m not crazy, the same thing It’s happening to me, I’m getting batches that are 3040 minutes away from my house when I know for a fact there’s dozens of them within walking distance. I’ll go in the stores and they’ll be tons of shoppers in there but I didn’t see one come up for me
Infuriating!! I see this happening more and more where the stores I want to be in are loaded with Shoppers, yet I don’t see the batches. I just don’t get it.! 💛
Yesterday I went into the store I usually shop at and they said they’ve been slammed with shoppers, but I was on the app for hour half and not ONE batch came up with in 18 mile radius of my house. And even those batches were super low paying. Double and triple batches for $20-22, I’m almost wondering if they’re giving all the good badges to the new shoppers to pull them in, I was at another store and there was a couple in there shopping she said she was training her husband on how to do Instacart and I asked her how much her badge paid and she said $45 I never even seen that batch come up for that store and it’s literally 3 blocks from my house, I thought about going to the area where I’m seeing batches but I have a feeling once I get over there they’re all gonna come back towards where I live it’s almost like they’re distracting us make us not want to be shoppers anymore I don’t understand
I thought you couldn’t work as a couple. Like it is against policy.
Omgosh I see couples and whole families shopping EVERYDAY, the split up the order knock out orders super fast, I always ask the cashier and they said they see it all day long. I’ve even said something to the shoppers that if they get caught they’ll get deactivated and they just Shrug their shoulders and move on.

That was a lot of fun! Thanks for taking us along, it was interesting seeing the batches and your experiences. Those are some really big tips. Here in New Brunswick, tips on usually between zero and $10 at most. I think that even with a super long drive times, the tips made up for it

Jen- almost all the things you’ve mentioned in this video I’ve had the same experiences and have had the same conversations with my cousin (who also is a shopper) SPOT ON w all the same issues I’ve been experiencing since Jan 11. California Silicon Valley shopper.
Wow! I am so grateful for your transparency. I recognized that in certain areas, 30+ mins away at night in areas of lots of construction, the app would lose signal and get an internal error. I am new so, the first time it happened I was unable to finish shopping. The second time at a different store and area, I maneuvered around it by the grace of God. However, the key takeaway is I didn't even realize I could just wait a little more patiently as I am new to the biz. I was too "swipe happy." I am so glad I came across your video.

I so admire your work ethic and determination. Even with all the driving back and forth you set out to make your goals and still give the best service. My app just started with the going online and offline, but haven't used it yet. I hope the kinks get worked out and you can get batches closer to you soon

i have alot of comments to make lol as always. So 1st thing the app update that you have is different from the app update we have in Sacramento. they only send us 1 batch at a time with 15 seconds to swipe if we want to take the order.... also with replacements you can refund the item at the customer door if you make a replacement and they dont want it before you complete the order go to the items and hit refund if the customer doesnt want the item.... i always call customers 2 times if replacements are needed.

I really hated that new map update, but I’m getting used to it. Trick is to scroll all the way to the top and hold your finger. But I really miss the old full screen view 😢

Thank you Jen, your work is so important to all of us. With the new app I’m only seeing one batch at a time in my area. It’s a unique area, as it’s located in the mountains. With one major grocery store. I was doing really well with this gig. The new app made it seem much more difficult I was having, inside my head problems. So I took a week off. I worked 11 straight weeks. I’m a New gig worker. So these were my first 11 weeks, doing gig work. On the old app,I did very well, because I found you, and your great advice. Your great advice, although very scary I figured things out pretty quickly. I really love doing this work. It gets me out of the house, and the money is really helped to catch up things financially. I’m not great at keeping all the records I probably should. But I am working on that this week with getting my head straight.
I was all so disappointed. Only seeing one batch at a time and sometimes waiting 40 minutes between batches. So I’m kind of left with taking whatever comes up. Not having the option of knowing where I’m going here in the mountains. And it’s so important to know where you’re delivering. It could be on a dirt road that’s like dune buggy style. Or you could get a house that has over 500 steps up a hill, schlepping everything. Cases of water cases of soda pop. Of course of course the old people, do you tip well for the most part. But there’s those that live on a small income and don’t have any wheels, to get to the grocery store. Or not have the physical disabilities to do so. All your advice has been very important. But I’m not happy with the new app either, and seeing, that you can get multiple batches to choose from made my day today thank you. But I’m not seeing anything but one at a time. And some of the other InstaCart shoppers, chatting with them it’s the same for them, no batches, in my area. Because it is such a small community. It is a resort town, with lots of seniors, air B and B’s and then there’s the mix of people like you spoke of in your video. Where her mother will order for her daughter to the craziest places. We also have the problem of trying to figure out where the address is, on all these high dollar places. Address is hidden by trees brush and assorted other things. And at night time it’s a nightmare. The GPS says you have arrived and the house is four houses away. It’s very annoying having the app say swipe to complete your delivery, and then East look at the app and it says you’re seven minutes away from your delivery. I still love this job and I intend on sticking with it. But I’m glad to taken time off to get myself together. I do not need this job to have my bills paid it is extra money. If there is such a thing. But I am catching up things that I wouldn’t of been able to do on my small retirement. Without this wonderful job. And you’re right I should look into other gigs. And maybe get some of them up and running. It’s just overwhelming, learning a new store that I’ve never ever shopped in. And with supply shortages and having to deal with customers nonstop, throughout the shop, or the lack there of. Here. We get the same customers, some people left already done three times. So it’s very unique, unlike you guys areas. Were you may never see or talk to anybody else again. You’re awesome I so appreciate you thank you.❤️👍👍

Massachusetts girl, here too. I’ve heard it’s cheaper to live in Western Mass and your videos prove it to be true! I’m not a shopper but use Instacart quite a bit. The average shop for my family is 36 items and comes to 200.00 odd dollars including tip. Thanks for your videos, I really appreciate your energy and enthusiasm for your job.

Love your videos Jen. I started doing instacart about a month ago and let me tell you I most likely would’ve declined. Too many items, the time plus long drive isn’t worth it in my opinion. Keep it up I got the newer version of the app here in California and I’m not loving it either. I can only see one batch at a time and you either accept or decline within 15 secs 🙄. Keep up the good work hang in there ❤️

I'm so glad you made this video it makes me feel better I've actually thought about reaching out to support because I'm not getting any thing at all showing up!! I've been a shopper for 3 years and I'm a 5 star and I'm getting nothing!! I don't understand it!! And also my promos are not good either?? There's another girl I run into from time to time and we were talking and her app all of a sudden said $5 extra for all orders from 4pm to 9pm but I didn't get that! Then she got an order and we split ways and about an hour later my app came up and said$2 on all batches from 5-8pm?? I don't get it?? I've always been an excellent shopper and I do not have any thumbdown on any category or any items marked missing/damaged but this other lady has a rating of 4.71 and 3 items marked damaged and 1 missing!! Why is this?? This literally makes no sense!! What's going on now a days??
Jen, it's me, the "rookie" again. I can't tell you how much great advise you give, especially to people brand new to Instacart. I unfortunately was one of the many people that permanently lost their jobs due to this pandemic. I have interview scheduled to hopefully get a great job with a really great company, on Monday. I hope this new job works out, but if not, I do not want to be forced to take just any job. Doing Instacart, Door Dash, etc., all provide a person the ability to make decent money. Plus this will enable me to wait for the right job, if my job meeting on Monday does not work out, for whatever reason. I received my Instacart debit card in the mail a few months back, but never started doing orders, likely because I was fearful of screwing up. Being able to make my own hours, along with your great advise on which batches to take, figuring out if it is worth your time, etc., has been so helpful, and with each of your videos, I gain that much more knowledge. Totally understand I do it accidently too. You have to swipe so fast. Just one of those days, tomorrow will make up for it is what I always hope for. Thankfully I don't have the update and hope I don't get it. So glad you said to call the customer, I will wait till I have 2-3 items and have had no response. I find it's almost always an elderly person or if I leave a message for someone they then get on the app and answer me. Thank you for the video.

I completely understand that everyone’s market is different, but this is exactly why I just don’t take Costco orders unless they are paying REALLY well. Strict $2 per item rule. I would have glanced and saw that 40 something items wasn’t paying in the $80 range then it’s a no go. I’m also a terrible at Costco and never learned the layout but nonetheless, it’s just so much hassle getting in and out of that store lol. That $38 batch on your screen looked like a lot less work and probably in and out in less than an hour. You may have been far away though. Love your vids Jenn!
Don’t want to be bitter, but I have been doing Instacart for 2 1/2 years here in Wisconsin. Only during the peak of COVID did I ever see $65 batches. Pre COVID you were lucky to get a $15 Aldi batch that was 50 items and 10 miles. Even that batch you literally had to stare at your phone and pounce. Now bathes are pitiful and pathetic again. There are batches that pay $7 no tip from the largest grocery store in the area for 50 items. My point in this rant? Be thankful that you have what you have in your area. Keep up the good job Jen!

@@JENontheGO thank you Jen! I had such a good day on Monday! Got to my goal of $300 and than now it’s been nothing.. I had one batch early at 5:45 this morning and now nothing. I sat in the parking lot after that batch and refreshing the screen and it sent me a notification of another batch but by the time I clicked it, it was gone. That’s another issue, why wouldn’t that same batch show up on my screen as I’m constantly refreshing but they send it too me thru notification. Just so frustrating 🤔 also I’m Southern California and I’m in the Facebook group it looks like all us 5 star shoppers are having the same issue. I ordered the newest iPhone today and upped my internet on my att plan to see if that helps. This is my full time job. Thanks for all that you do and all your info! I honestly feel your videos have made me a better shopper!

The update in Sacramento gives one batch at a time and you can choose to decline until you get a decent offer and this can take hours
Ain’t that some sh*t. I don’t sit and wait. I usually after dropping delivery I swipe complete in front of customers house and then swipe my next batch. I refuse to waste time sitting around. I haven’t got the patience.

Hearing all of your information, I would likely be more like you, prefering to stay closer to my home, taking smaller orders, and more from the local grocery stores within 5-10 miles from my house. I am trying to figure out batches and trying to get figured out to how I can average at least $20-25 an hour as a goal. Thanks again Jen.

I’m really new. Major pandemic burnout. I’m an ultrasound sound tech that just resigned from the job that I had for nearly 10 years. I wanted more time with my children, my dogs, and just more time period! In just this past week since starting Instacart- I’ve had unresponsive customers, false claims I didn’t deliver stuff (thankfully I watch you and take photos) and had to cancel a batch bc it took me to a location that was rural and all new construction and my GPS tweeked out and kept telling me I had arrived when I was looking at a dead end road. I called the customer, care called- no response. I had to return everything and boom! Account suspended for 24 hours. Not cool and not fair! 😠 Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and thank you for your words of wisdom and advise. I would like to be able to earn well in less time for the benefit of my sanity and my children- I use your advise so thank you Jen!
I am an Instacart customer as well as a full service shopper. In the past, I have noticed that instacart was sending alot of coupons for 20 off 100 but I have not seen any in awhile now, since March 31st to be exact. So maybe this is affecting how many larger orders are actually going out. Idk just a connection I made while watching. Loved this video!
I had a similar encounter last week as you, Jen. Only showing me 1 or 2 batches at a time and they were ridiculously far. I live in Fresno, CA which is 20-30 miles away from several different smaller towns and I kept getting batches for those towns while I was in Fresno, population 500k+ 😂 this algorithm change feels like it's more important than ever to "train" it. Supposedly the types of batches you accept influences what you will receive in the future. So this week as more batches have slowly opened up I have ONLY accepted single batches with high tips... usually where the tip meets or exceeds the batch payment. Also, yes move around but don't move too much, as the algorithm is slow to pick up on your new location. I found it works best to wait between batches in the neighborhood you just delivered in, for 5-15 mins for your next batch to pick up .. and again never settle for lower tip or double/triples unless they have a FAT tip and/or are delivery-only orders you can knock out in a breeze. So far this week I have had great results 👍 but as you said we never know what comes next as this app can love you one day and hate you the next for no apparent reason at all 🤷♂️

I always see batches out of my area. I get so aggravated about it. Once I leave then I see batches. Ridiculous. I'd love to see your batches compared to mine. However I get the best ratings for communication and Ive gotten lucky to get 3 .... $100.00 tips from customers.

This app update is horrible. But I don’t know why my husbands phone hasn’t changed and mine has.
I’m seeing less batches and not even making half the money.
They can’t force us to take these horrible batches that we would lose money on since we’re independent contractors.

Why they’re showing stuff far away is ridiculous. I hate it tells us to click delivered when I’ve barely pulled out of the parking lot.
And it’s sucks just having to swipe whatever good pops up if you want to make money
It is honestly exhausting. It’s like we have to take the distance just to get a decent payout. I swiped way too fast on most of my batches.!! Ugh! 💛

Thanks for this video! 🌷It's everything I'm thinking and more 😔 my income has been cut in half even though I've actually climbed my way back up to ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I constantly get the" please mark as delivered" when I'm not even halfway there as well 😟 I actually had to cancel an order because I swiped on the wrong store 😭 yesterday, I drove around endlessly parked in different stores,🤨 gave up went shopping in one of them😉 and still came home with zero 😰 I even got a part-time job this week because since I've had the new app it's just awful 😓

Jen I love the video. I was thinking that a video to discuss the “guaranteed earnings” might be beneficial to some viewers. People seem really confused about it and think they are making a ton of extra money only to be disappointed.

Yes, I would have done that order! I love Costco, but I can't do large batches unless it's for just one person.
unfortunately in my area there are a lot of non tippers now. Or if they do tips its 2 dollars or so to carry a bunch of 24 pack waters and other items.
Its a bit unfortunate how people dont see the hustle we go through.
I’ve wondered about this. My area and the batches I’m given seem like over half the customers are $5 or less tippers. It makes me wonder if they are aware that we do not work for Instacart and, at least in my area I’m going to guess, a good 70 percent of the batches pay its shoppers the state minimum wage. We are never short of $9 batches, and many times those batches get hidden in other group batches with better tippers. Of course, then you realize you’re driving over 10 miles.
@@ThisNamesNowTaken exactly sadly all those non tippers get grouped together with a batch that tips good.
Its sad how sometimes doordash or uber eats get more tips which only picks up small order and deliver, when we have to rug around huge cases of bottled water up 3 stairs risking injury and such.
The quantity involved is so much more and the time and effort we put in as well.
We dont just go in and grab we choose wisely as well. Also we drive our own car which depreciates over time

It always surprise me how when i do doordash or postmate and i grab and deliver the item tips sometimes are big.
When i do instacat delivering packs of water upstairs on the 3rd floor and no tip or even tip baited i always feel so depressed when that happens.
Its like bro we risk injury and so much care we take to deliver the item.
But yea their are always good people with generous hearts out there.
Regarding tips, it's nice to receive them, but the real problem is with the low pay that the companies give and with the minimum hourly salary. Tips should be meant as an addition not the main pay. Problem is with the greedy multi million and billion dollar companies and the government I've noticed many times that whenever there's a generous tip the company pays very little. It's all calculated and sometimes it's better to take orders with no tip because if there are items unavailable the tip goes down. That's my experience this might not apply to everyone.

when you do costco orders, use one of the flat carts and get boxes while you shop. It helps a lot, especially when you have two orders because you can keep them separated

unfortunately i think the market is slowing down some. there are a LOT more folks out shopping these days at least in my neck of the woods. would be great if IC would STOP hiring people too. That is nothing against new shoppers but there is not enough work for the folks that are already on there. Hopefully it will keep going though. I would imagine some shoppers will probably bail if they are not able to make the money they need to to survive. In my area we dont have the new app update yet. (thank goodness!) but still lots of double and triples and no or low tips or high milage. I refuse to take anything over 5-6 miles. and i will not do triples. i will occasionally do a double but only if the item counts are not super high and the pay is worth it. I guess we will see where it all ends up here soon as more and more stuff opens up and more people are vaccinated.

One of the issues that Instacart needs to look into is the unknown number that they give us to call the customer. They don't know who is calling so they don’t answer the phone. This is a big issue when trying to contact customers and there to my knowledge there is no notification to the customer two cause them to be expecting an unknown number
hello, jen im thinking of doing instacart after doing postmates for over a year. just wanted to know when you shop at costco do you show a membership card? and when paying do you scan a membership card along with your intacard payment card?
That delivery message I've gotten that plenty of times I also have a folder full of emails from instacart saying receipt photo issue wrong receipt usually I get those from doing doubles and triples I just ignore all those messages and click delivered once I've delivered

My husband also is an Instacart shopper and his phone is current but is still the old screen for batches!

Same thing is happening to me! I go to shop in my town and they only show me batches for 30 mins away, I go another town and then they show me batches close to my house. I've had to do other apps lately bc I'm over it 🤷♀️

Hi Jen thanks for making this video. I got the new app and I don’t like it. As you said tons of crap orders. And most of the batches are not local where I am used to seeing from the old app. Now they are sending me everything from out of town areas. I think it could be the new normal. If you can please ask your IC informant about the new app please let us know. As of now I am not even doing IC it is crap. It is lot of work and I am tired of being bossed by stupid customers and worrying about ratings and pressured by time limits. Screw that.

@@JENontheGO I recall do dislike the new app I use to average a lot more and I’m like you I will not take an order if there is no tip it is not worth my time effort or wear and tear on my vehicle. I’ll keep watching and you keep us informed thanks again.

I’m driving back to San Diego next week. San Diego is pretty dense multiple Costcos and every other store. May I ask what area you shop for? I’m guessing when you say 20 miles for delivery my mouth drops.

Interesting video. The app behaves really differently in California. She threw me off when she said offline and online, they took that away from our area a couple of years ago. We see batches purely based on rating.
I think the 2 batches you received were awesome..I absolutely would have taken them. Like you said only 2 batches and you completed your goal for the day. Yes, it took you out of the way with the mileage, but on a positive note you mileage can be used for tax purposes, and you can explore different areas....
I try to see the positives of the far distance orders. In my area, those pay the most. A) I enjoy the ride, listening to my podcasts and B) including shopping and delivery time, I still make more per hour than any typical entry level job.

I’m in California with the update. One batch shown at a time. The app is slow even while shopping a and I see maybe one - two batches per day. To top that, I have to be ready and online when the batch randomly pops on my screen.
I recommend you using cold bags with all them cold items, especially driving 30 minutes away. Just a thought ma'am
I definitely would’ve taken the order too. ☺️ i have hybrid suv. The drive isn’t too bad for me. I do feel like they distance the stores from the location of the customer so we think we earn more. I do hate when the pop up says please click if delivered. Im not rushing myself to deliver their groceries. 😑 i go at least 30 min away from my house which have better batches. ☺️ i love driving too ❤️
Jen you would absolutely hate my market, (inland empire, Southern California), little to no tips, and the algorithm makes double and triple batches very fast I noticed. Monday-Friday, completely dead, Saturday it picks up, then boom Sunday it’s busy.

I tried taking big batches even if they had long drive delivery times last Friday. I made okay $$, but not enough to make it worth the time and miles put on my vehicle 😔 Sometimes I feel like the algorithm is trying to see what it can get us to do 🤔

I am not quite sure what you mean by the new app, it does look different. I have not seen a lot of batches lately either. I try to not go over 8 miles. I have a habit to press on a batch just to check out the stats but it's not near me. I am trying not to do that because the algorithm might register it as I am not accepting it. I have also had batches that when I check out it says customer A but I am only doing a single. I think the app separates a double if no one is taking it. Definitely hard to understand what is going on but I do think there are less batches in general lately Thanks for the ride along video, they are my favorite.
Looks like we are getting the update this week. It makes me sick just thinking of it. I'm hoping for the best.

I feel your pain girl, driving such far distances is hard on ya, man you had that Costco cart packed🤯 they just did the online thing to us a few days ago, I DISLIKE IT IMMENSELY 😫😫 you have to swipe too fast , if you even get to swipe at all, we've been beyond slow here 😭 we are lucky if we see two at a time , there will be hours of no batches at all, and now you have to stare at your stupid phone amd pray a decent batch comes along😒 been doing d dash but dang , when I deliver groceries most NEVER EVER TIP😭 they tip great on the eay McDonald's batches or restaurants but not on the groceries , I had to go up this hill from hell ( 10%grade🥵 kills my gas mileage) 5 times today w groceries for these zero tippers lug the groceries up major stairs arf, I am hoping it's just a slow time🙏 instacart has been rough, as I'm typing a 65 dollar ic pooped up GONE IN LESS THAN 5 SECONDS 😭😭😭😭😭 seems like the good old days are gone 🙄
Well, I sure do miss the good all days. I need to learn to slow down and settle for smaller amounts with shorter distances. This was a brutal driving week.! Costco is brutal and always slows me down. I’m trying to master it, though! 💛
@@JENontheGO omg LISTEN TO WHAT IC JUST DID TO ME😭 I finally saw a good batch, 44 bucks 25 items, long short as I drove there a banner flashed up saying " the batch was UNNASSSIGNED TO ME🥵 I'm talking to shopper support now, they said my batch was given to another shopper😡😡 WTH I was a beautiful 5 star until aa customer who was stupidly picky gave me a 4 star rating because she wanted a certain brand spinach , they didn't have it, I got her identical fresh spinach different label same price and she screwed me for it, sorry for my French, instacart sucks

My app have not updated like yours but batches have been slow in NC. Even with a 5 star rating, I only did 2 batches today. Lots of low paying double and triple batches and batches with no tip.
So the amount you see is what you earn (not including the tip), or you have to wait for instacart to pay you a portion of that?

I am just starting and afraid to make my first shopping trip. Seems like there are not a lot of options to shop at in my area.
I find if I am not working in the morning and drive out of where my zone is and come back and decide to work my screen will be showing more batches from out that way. So Now I log out and go into the settings and turn my location off If I’m traveling around when not working. Wow that first Costco order was a biggie a flatbed would’ve been helpful on that guy but you had it perfectly organized. It’s defiantly been a teeter totter this week with the batches and those dreadful triples no way ..
In my area I have never ever seen a batch for $60. You should be grateful for that no matter how far you have to drive because some people never see them.
Yes! That has happened to me Jen. They have sent me that message saying please confirm that you delivered to customer or something along those lines and I haven’t even gotten anywhere close to the customer’s house.
