    Let me just say this now Cuhz I think y’all got me confused. I’m not saying nfl rejects would automatically make us beat the all blacks. That’s just crazy. But what I’m saying is, instead of NFL rejects just thinking NFL is there only option. Have them go out for rugby, create more popularity in the sport, and show that American athletes have more option than just NFL, basketball or baseball. Building explosive short burst power is a lot harder than building aerobic capacity (I was a personal trainer for 5+ years) so it’s very possible. Rather than bringing on guys who haven’t really played a competitive sport in years. Idk that’s just my take. Gotta have a reason to make kids wanna play. Why not use their favorite college players that didn’t make the NFL or NBA

    • @athlonen

      Exactly this! This is why when the AFL started their USA combine, they are looking for basketball sized players that can show endurance. That’s how Jason Holmes and Mason Cox got to the AFL.

      You make an interesting point. I am curious to know what the grassroots structures are like in the United States. You will probably find that the bulk of these players are posh kids from the burbs. I feel like the moment African Americans are exposed to rugby, you guys will be devastatingly good. And you will constantly be on the global stage, because there is tremendous emphasis on international rugby in our sport. Also it is possible to make a transition like the one you are suggesting. In parts of Australia, New Zealand, and even Europe there is a sport called Rugby League. It is not unusual for those players to convert to rugby. Australia has had a lot of converts. Guys like Berrick Barnes, Mat Rogers, Wendell Sailor, Lote Tuqiri, Andrew Walker, and Ryan Cross come to mind. The list is actually long, but those are guys who stood out in my youth.

      Bro I went to a suburbs high school and we had a rugby team and an entire league in my school district. I had voted that played American football on my team and rugby in off season. Only the rich schools get rugby programs and these kids play for fun not out of survival to get out their neighborhood. In the inner cities or less affluent res these kids only see 2 sports as a means out. Give them another option and watch how hard they would go from an early age.

    Lol brother you're not just gonna bring a bunch of NFL players into rugby and beat a country who has cultivated and played Rugby at the highest level for 100 years. But there is hope for Rugby in the U.S with its Major League Rugby growth and these big games against top tier nations to help promote the sport. Don't feel ashamed of the score, everyone knows the sport is growing in the U.S. There's genuinely very few teams that can stop this kind of All Black attack. Respect to both teams!

    Hi Sean. 1874 was the first year Rugby Union was played in the USA. It was introduced to the ivy league Universities, who were copying what they played in the English Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. It was said that Rugby would develop the character of a man. The USA quickly became very good at it and crowds of 50,000 would attend some of the University games. (Remember, USA Rugby Team made up from those ivy league colleges, won two consecutive Olympic Gold medals when the 15 a side game was in the Olympics. They were really good.)
    Certain vested groups in the USA wanted to turn Rugby Professional but the controlling body insisted Rugby remain amateur only. So, USA developed their own form of the game, changing most of the rules to what they wanted, then called the new game, Gridiron. It was later changed to American Football but, of course, the US people just dropped the "American" part of the name and called it Football, ignoring the international game that already existed called Football. I don't think the NFL tier rejects would do.
    Rugby requires a different mould of player that have natural strength. Most of college player build up muscle to prepare for the combines and later draft to the NFL. Muscles require oxygen, the more the beef, the more air is required hence the oxygen supply on the sidelines.
    For quarters of the NFL is compressed into two 40 min. There are no timeouts that football players are used to. A rugby player has to be on his toes in defence or offence.
    Those football players with endurance, can adapt easier, as well as good talent scout specifically for rugby.

Also in rugby union and rugby league we leave the trash talk for when you play, rugby players from both codes don't do that stuff. They let their actions on the park during the game do all the talking for them. That's called being humble, and not shooting your mouth off in case you get humiliated.

      I think its the 80 minutes of continuous play that fucks them. Plus the NFL usually have defensive and offense teams that are switched, which doesn't happen in Rugby.

    Awesome reaction cuz. What your country needs is for coaches from not only NZ but the tier one nations to coach teams in the American rugby championship. Luckily one from NZ is on his way in Carlos Spencer. He will definitely instill the Southern Hemisphere style which will help a lot. The “rejects” you need are NZ, Australian or South African players to be invited to play in your teams.

      It's funny how we always say rugby is made for all. Skills can be taught, endurance can be attained. Speed however...he is quite right. The only reason why South africa and NZ are relevant us because USA's best athletes are playing other sports. They had a "rugby combine" recently and BEN FODEN(retired 36 yrld fullback) rAn the fastest time. These guys are a joke. Eagles are slow and weak. They need some Brothas

    ABOUT 1874 CUP. The first account of organized rugby being played in the United States was in 1874 in a collegiate match between Harvard University (Boston, MA) and McGill University (Montreal, Quebec). The 1874 Cup pays homage to this first contest and recognizes the history and tradition of rugby in North America.

      USA got knocked out of the Rugby League Cup qualifiers by the Cook Islands in 2019 a nation in the pacific between Samoa and French Polynesia with a population of 15000, they earlier lost to Jamaica thats the USA so beating the cook islands was their last shot to qualify, And the Rugby Union team the USA eagles, the one we are watching lost their qualifying match vs Uraguay so now their last shot to make the rugby world cup is to beat chile, a team that just knocked Canada out of qualifying for the rugby world cup. I will be cheering Chile on, because I like their style and they are the underdog, in terms of ranking, $ and player numbers. USA has a very good sevens team though.

Remember in NZ we grow up watching, playing and idolising players who are in league and union and we literally live and breathe these games 😂 the captain of that cook islands team has just retired with 285 caps for his NRL team the Brisbane broncos and was a beast. Also Uruguay and other south American teams have been playing rugby union for ages now too and I remember watching games where they've given the AB's SA and AUS something to be worried about and even beaten them at times. Like I said bro more interest and money into it and USA will be mean! (NZ slang for really good)

    Love how you're riding the bumps on this knowing that there's no way we'd stop the ABs. And you're right.. #9 gives us some hope, but I'm wondering why they didn't bring in Carlin Isles or Perry Baker or similar from the 7s team for the speed and pace.. but you're on to something with bringing in NFL players that didn't make a team to give them a shot at this. If they did that with some good coaching (say, bring in Piri Weepu or let Ma'a Nonu coach.. even a week of coaching from Tana Umaga would help!), they could come out with a good team. Kia kaha, bro!

    • @finn54123
      @finn54123 2 роки тому

      Lol what? Piri Weepu? Ma’a Nonu? Just cos they good players doesn’t mean they’re good coaches. Carlin Isles I think would be ok, but it’s a very different game to sevens. And perry baker would get snapped like a twig I feel. NFL players, yeah they’d probably be good, but even if all the best NFL players trained for years, they wouldn’t win, you need to bake the instincts in from a young age and it’s so different from NFL

    • @tehydro315
      @tehydro315 2 роки тому

      Ma'a in a player/advisor role may have some good impact. Piri was a awesome player who doesn't get enough credit but I don't see him in a coaching role. You are spot on with Tana, any team will be lucky to have his expertise a beast on and off the field.

    I'm from New Zealand. I honestly think that if USA were equally passionate about rugby as they are the NFL, you guys would be a deadly asf team. You have some insane athletes especially in the African American and American/pacific islander races. No hate against the NFL but I personally find it hard to sit through a game because of the stop/start after every tackle. If someone makes a big hit/tackle in NFL, they tend to showboat so hard. In rugby if you make a big hit, yeah it feels good as a rugby player myself but the game keeps going. If the USA were a rugby passionate country and had built a lot of your most impressive athletes to be rugby fit players, you guys would give us a run for our money and probably be on top of the world. As a country You have the potential, just not the passion yet. Was a beautiful tribute from you guys for one of our fallen brothers though. Much love ❤️

    The US needs players that have a lifetime of experience, a league with the same, and generations of coaching experience. Then they will be able to compete. I think it will take 30 to 40 years for us to even be able to compete with the All Blacks like Ireland or England does. With that said I love watching this US rugby journey and watching it grow. Our women are also rugby world champions ( actually... they have won more rugby world cups than the men... just saying...) also... it was named the 1874 cup... to pay tribute to America's rugby roots. When the first ever, organised match was held on american soil.... interesting... bit of rugby trivia.

That's how it is in New Zealand, rugby is a major sport at all levels through school, right from the beginning, and it's also our No1 sport here, so it's where our best athletes are.
