I saw Gwyneth Jones onstage as Salome in New York. She was amazing! It happened to be Andrew Davis’s debut at the Met.
There are many great Salomes (Mitropolous, Karajan-Behrends, Sinopoli, Solti), but I always thought that Wellitsch and Reiner (at least the final) is the best. Never heard that Reiner conducted Salome in Munich (and I live in Munich). Friendly Fritz (orchestras called him cynical so) was a great conductor (his Strauss and Strauß-walzes!). There is a Salome finish with Böhm and Nilsson at the MET, also unbelievable.
What a great cast at all. I really appreciate the royal couple, it's really a royal one. I have to notice that the role of Herodes really wins if it's been casted with a heroic voice and really have beeb sung. I don't like the long lasting tradition to cast for it character- tenors like Gerhard Stolze or Horst Hiestermann. Their portraits are more like spoken.
