These children are far more intelligent than most of their current peers. And a show that promoted learning and enjoyment at the same time a rarity amongst current childrens television. RIP Bob. A true gentleman of the old school.
Bob Holness, what a gentleman he was and Ed Welch's theme had all the soul you'd expect from the composer behind Spike Milligan's retelling of The Snow Goose (also on UA-cam).
I remember coming home from junior school and watching Blockbusters and also Countdown on Channel 4 too ! - Oh the happy memories of 1983 and still being that 6 year old kid ! I wish now 83 had lasted forever ! - Best year of the 1980's !
RIP Bob. I liked seeing the old Central logo at the start of the show. A lot of the ITV companies had their idents at the start of programmes at one time. I watched Blockbusters a lot in the late 80s and early 90s.
I kind of like what the UK did with Blockbusters. Even though it was created in the US, it didn't enjoy as long of a run. The original US run went from 1980 to 1982 on NBC, and was hosted by Bill Cullen. It was brought back briefly in 1987, and hosted by Bill Rafferty.
RIP Bob. But did big-mouth Simon beat big-hair Chris... Bob looked a bit uncomfortable at times, nothing that a quick adjustment of his specs couldn't fix! Great memories of teatime quizzing.
@97channel Well-spotted! Some theories: Maybe the board circuitry, or the operator, messed up and they overlayed the graphics afterwards, but the operator was a little too quick off the mark? Or maybe they had a false start and let him go again, so they guessed what he would go with? I'm pretty sure the board operator must have hit a wrong key sometimes!

Fair play, some of those goldrun questions stumped me lol
RIP Bob Holness. 80s youth gameshow icon and possibly the first ever James Bond (on radio an way before any movies).
Brings back memories of coming home from school and it would come on around
I don't know why, but Haley's face and hair were sooo cute on this show haha

This went out on Thursday 6th October 1983.
This Blockbusters Is Better Than The Revamp.
Wow, a complete washout. Those always hurt.
Bob Holness had a wonderful way of dealing with the rather juvenile contestants.

Can I have a R.I.P please Bob. Very sad news is this. Was what I looked forward to after I got in from school.

if I remember (way back to 1983)..Blockbusters was on later so 5.10pm or 5.15pm it be on, then its the ITN news at 5:45.
Hhhmm, curious. MFJ on the Gold Run board starts flashing before he asks for it. And there's no lag on the video.
