It's weird to think back on it from a modern lens, but it wasn't too uncommon for big gaming heavyweights like Konami or Capcom to just put out a a legitimately great licensed game. This one probably got slept on because I don't know how many 80s/early 90s kids were going crazy for Mission Impossible. I'd love to hear from people who got super into this one back in the day, though
The sinister Seven? So George Costanza went back in time, had a child and then went back to the future? Cool. Great review as always. I never played this game, never had a NES, but it looks like a tolerable experience. :) Thanks for sharing!
A lot of Konami's NES manuals forced this super wacky tone that clearly wasn't intended by the game developers themselves. Castlevania III and Life Force did it, too. I'd love to see some kind of behind-the-scenes interview one day with whoever was responsible for it.
My parents would always buy me the cheapest games they could get from licenses they recognized, so I had a lot of Ultra games. TMNT, Silent Service, Mission: Impossible... All of them were super hard to learn for an 8 year old but that's what I had so I'd be damned if I wasn't going to keep playing them. I learned to really enjoy deep game mechanics and a difficulty curve that was more like a difficulty ledge. Great video of a very under appreciated game!
Man, I remember the ad for this when I was a young kid really freaking me out. Like, that dude's on a tightrope that's burning up behind him! He could die! It kept me from ever playing the game, because it was too scary. I wish I were kidding.
I don't know why I never played this game as a kid, looks funny, with a hint of TMNT, I will play it while enjoying my powdered eggs and grape juice. Great video as always, Trav! I wish you and all your subscribers a Happy New Year.
That was the very first game I've rented in my life! By that time I haven't got much of a clue on what to do in the first level, but maybe it's time for me to revisit it. Music sounds pretty good actually, total Konami spirit from that age Moreover, I must say I enjoyed your deliver as a secret agent on this one so I'm writing a recommendation letter to Langley at this very moment. Further information will come soon. Maybe.
It feels like the manual was written by Saved by the Bell. I never played this as a kid but it looks like something I would have liked. Thanks for the vid
As a kid I liked this game, but I thought choosing to use a pure top down view instead of an angled view like Konami's Metal Gear made it tougher to connect with the characters. Few games would choose this. Even most games which were effectively top down, like Zelda, would render most characters from some sort of front angle. The straight top down allows the player to be certain where the character's hitbox is in the vertical direction (unlike some beat-em-ups) but feels more artificial and detatched. It's hard to find games, especially realistic games, that use this, even all the way back to the beginning of games. Activition's Boxing for the 2600 is an example, but Atari didn't even want to do this on the 2600 with Realsports Boxing in 1987. Grand Theft Auto 1&2 did this, but there are two factors. First, the characters were much smaller, not these broad chested guys. And second, that game is still 3D. Mission: Impossible has a nearly orthographic top down projection. Anyway, I always liked this game although I thought it could have been more. But that perspective is strange.
This was part of a challenge I gave myself (beat all thirty games featured in this magazine!!), and while I used a walkthrough for all of it and not just the first level, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Would I play it again? Not really--but I will tell people to check it out. It's far from the worst licensed NES game. The soundtrack is definitely rad.
I'd love to know what Konami was smoking when writing their instruction manuals because they are often written as a joke and full of puns. A big flaw with this game and what makes it difficult is that if Grant dies, you can't hack open certain doors AFAIK. So you're stuck unless you die and start the stage over.
I’ve loved every TV iteration of Mission: Impossible that I’ve seen in my life, and I think I attempted this game once or twice. But it just doesn’t capture what I’m looking for from M:I. There’s too much violence, too little intrigue, nowhere near enough gadgets, and I can’t recall if it has a single good disguise moment. I don’t think so, though. Then again, if I saw that commercial, it would have lowered expectations - after all, the Secretary only disavows knowledge of the IMF’s actions if they’re caught or killed, not their whole existence. So, going forward, I will not decide to accept this mission.
I beat this when I was eight or nine. I think Grant should have a better weapon though. And seriously who on the writing team read that the team includes a former Secret Service Agent and thought sidelining her for the adventure was the best use of Shannon? Konami made the TMNT game which had a four character team with the ability to switch members when needed Mechanic so why did they only use three of the team's members in the action here?
Happy Wednesday, for those who celebrate.
Good to meet a fellow wednesday enjoyer. Happy wednesday! I hope your next wednesday is as good, or better than, this one!
It is Wednesday, my dude.
Damn! It seems like it comes earlier and earlier each week!
This is an underrated gem that gives me huge TMNT vibes. Also one of the best intros

Punching enemies and have them explode is something that is so NES. You don't see that in too many games now adays

Whoever wrote those manuals was clearly very smart, probably ate a breakfast of powdered eggs and grape juice every morning.

TMNT is my jam
@@NESFriend I'm going to revisit soon on my Pi with savestates, make that game my bitch!
@@TheWarmotor you can definitely do it! I have a recent walkthrough somewhere on my channel. Guaranteed a beat or your money back!
And as always, if any of your powdered eggs or grape juice is captured or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge.
Always gotta remember the underappreciated Mission: Improbable, Mission: Implausible, and the French, Mission: Impossibles

For the record, I don't endorse this game and a brainy breakfast simultaneously! Could be too intense!
Hadn’t heard of this one previously, adding it to my list:)
My first NES game on cartridge! Love this game!

I had this as a kid. Super frustrating. I don’t think I ever finished it.

Lol saved by the bell
I love how the commercials make these games sound like the most incredible thing ever only to be completely outdated by codgers like me lol.
Happy Wednesday and New Year everyone!

I powedered my eggs and graped my juice, but I don't feel any smarter

good review, love this game
I totally forgot they rebooted the show in the late 80’s
This is one I need to get around to playing. I found it not too long ago CIB and was stoked that it was by Ultra. Ah gamer problems lol
I had this game and it took me a year to beat it
One of those games for the nes with a first level way too damn hard. lol

The real insanely hard Mission Impossible game was released on the N64.
Mission: Impossible - i sleep
Impossible Mission: real sh*t!
when summing up levels you missed one. In the Alps, the level before skien down.

Wise choice, agent.
I feel called out! No, but this and castlevania 3 are the only Grant's I think in all videogamedom.
🤘🥰 great video!

I am not sure why but I don't mind this game. It is infuriating and boring overall, and yet, I come back.
It's got you right where it wants you!
