- The Nerd tackles the infamous Ninja Gaiden for the NES. Widely considered one of the hardest games of the 8-bit era. Even a master ninja would have trouble, if given the chance. Well, a chance is given, as the Nerd seeks out the help of a sensei master. Q-tips will drop, thumbs will slice - it's AVGN: Ninja Gaiden!

Yeah I'm 40 years old , it's 12:00am, have to wake up early for work but I'm watching my new favorite UA-camr playing 30 year old games. I love my life.
Hell yeah!
I highly doubt you love your life when your in your frigging 40s. The only way to really love life is to have significant other and have sex with him and/or her on a daily basis.
@@RCDW That's wrong man
@@jedisquidward I don't give a flying Canadian fuck. People like that person needs to get a life.

I just love the idea that there's an NES game ninja who's willing to teach anyone how to play Ninja Gaiden but just gives up at the final boss
Well.. I need him now, so please call this ninja hahaha

One of my favorites too. The delivery of it is so perfect.
Same here with Cuphead. Love the visual stuffs but hate the unfair difficulty.

The outtakes/blooper reel is just filled with quotable lines that I still use to this very day.

If I remember correctly, the whole restarting world 6 was originally a bug that they decided to keep into the game's code because it worked with the game's difficulty.
Not gonna lie 13:06 actually fooled me, he hid perfectly just like a real ninja. The crazy thing is what he's doing is an actual technique that real ninja used to stay hidden.
You die, you go BACK! :D

TheSonOfTheDragon A pillow camuflage.

Gamers didn’t realize you have to use the ninja blades when you attack the final boss .. cause the Blades do allot of quick powerful damage .. that’s basically the most powerful weapon Ryu has..💯💯💯💯💯💯
Pahahaha, I didn't even see t, had to check again
Back in the days when it was not how long it took to finish a game but IF you could finish it.
Some speed runs are impressive but I always preferred seeing the most difficult level/games beaten with ease through practice and patience
Yeah, for me it was Lagoon for the SNES. I could never get past the bird at the end.
Nah it was about speed too. Think of all the games with time limits.
I grew up on games like these. I let my son play Mega Man. He is pretty good on modern games but Mega Man really kicked his behind. These games were no walk in the park.
@@JasonSpiffy I've played Mega Man 2 from the video store multiple times as a kid. I was excited as hell when I went through all of the levels...then came Dr Wiley stage. I never got past the part when that damn dragon is right on my butt.

When some game is pissing me off I comes back to this video.
“Is it you controlling the game or the game controlling you?”.
“A ninja must see beyond the borders of the screen”.
“Preserve the victory in your head and your preserved future will be your present”.
“Anger does not exist!”.
“Pain does not exist!”.
“Before you think you must feel!”.
Very inspiring.
My favourite is "think between the spaces". Very useful.
The game is only over, when you make it over.
But in the end, even the ninja gave up.
You should change that preserve the victory in your head message with Preserve the victory in your head... and you will receive head) lmfao outtakes
If I can't complete a game it just remains on the shelf as a collectible
"You realize before you beat the game, the game must beat you" "Is the game controlling you or are you controlling the game?" Man, these wise words struck me.
The game is only over, when you make it over.
That made me emotional
You know, it’s actually kinda true :)
Actually, you're right. The game has to beat you so that you can learn your mistakes and become better. The game controlling you is the game angering you, allowing yourself to accept the loss.
Are you the player, or are you being played?
I think the reason I love this episode so much is because it shows James' love for not just Ninja Gaiden, but his love for the whole 1980's ninja action aesthetic as a whole. It's honestly kind of heartwarming.
Fun Fact: The back of the poster Nerd looks at has instructions.
i thought that was the punch lines as well!!
What kind of instructions? 🤔
I used to hate admitting I couldn’t beat this game. Now that I see there are so many others, I think I can begin to let go and move on. There needs to be a ninja gaiden support group.

*"MACHINE: PREDICTABLE. YOU: NOT"*
Men, that's deep...
deeper than you would think considering there is no such thing as true randomness with programming
Jakub Gdaniec that's deep
It is actually possible to have true random in computers, and even when they don't use true random, the outcome is actually much better than the numbers chosen by humans. Unfortunately I don't feel like explaining it, at least not now, because just a little earlier I wrote a long comment explaining it , but just because I pressed the wrong button , it all went like "puff".
And then you have lootboxes and RNG systems.
I can so easily view humans as machines; biological machines instead of mechanical ones.

*With that attitude, you will never succeed*
He never said it was a terrible game just that it was a really hard .one very unique episode
Street Fighter and Ninja Gaiden both have the characters named Ryu and Ken, but they have different meanings in Japanese.
In Street Fighter, Ryu means Prosperity or Abundant (隆) and Ken means Fist (拳).
In Ninja Gaiden, Ryu means Dragon (龍) and Ken means Sword (剣).
but his name is just ケン?

"Are you controlling the game, or is the game controlling you?"
As someone who grew up playing NES, I can definitely say that the games control you. They are designed to be frustrating.

I love the tiny shrug and nod after 8:43, like "well it wasn't my best aphorism but it'll do" :D
Been rewatching avgn and i think i enjoy them more now than i did as a teenager. This one was great.
"with that attitude, you will never succeed" - words to live by
“If you set a course for the moon and merely follow the stars, then you will miss that which you have set forth”
🤣😂🤣😂 i laugh so hard every time i watch this and see James’ reaction after he says that. And then the ninja kinda shrugs b/c he knew it made absolutely no fkn sense lmao. Great AVGN moment.
I think it actually makes a bit of sense. If you look at the words, it's basically saying "If you set a destination by what's around it, you miss the point of the original destination."
I think it's meant to harken back to something Bruce Lee said. "It is like a finger pointing a way to the moon. Don't concentrate on the finger or you will miss out on all that heavenly glory."
@George Kafiridis I don't think it's meant to reference that. Especially as James is a huge movie buff.
@George Kafiridis, so am I. Amazing how that works, no? I think the ninja's line was referencing the old Bruce Lee line, not the older proverb. You disagree. Neither of us has any evidence to support our opinions. Perhaps if James does an AMA someone can ask him.
@George Kafiridis, if it was as "obvious" as you say it is, than I wouldn't be disagreeing with you. Now, quit trying to save face on an old internet argument, accept that until there's official word from the content creator, my answer is just as valid as yours.
It's been retconned. Ryu's dad is now named "Joe" lmao
In Japan, too
it was always supposed to be joe, the translators were idiots like most nes games
@@MarsofAritia Well there you go, more interesting trivia

This game makes Dark Souls look like a kids game.
Dark Souls is Animal Crossing compared to Ninja Gaiden.
Very true. I see people bitching about the souls series and instantly know they never suffered through Ninja Gaiden
Dark souls is challenging yes, but 80s nes games are brutal. Especially ninja gaiden. And honestly, even today there's games harder than dark souls. Devil may cry 5 is way harder if you're trying to s rank everything
Thats only because Dark souls acully gives you a chance, Ninja gaiden is chalk full of super unfair BS like he already showed you, enemy's spawning faster then u can swing and if u go back half a centimeter they respawn.and thats only two of the issues!
Nes games makes dark souls look like fucking Ducktale, except Duck Tale on Nes is much harder.

"Before you can Beat the game, the game must beat you". Dark souls philosophy right there!
Started watching AVGN back in 2010. James is by far one of the few youtubers I enjoy rewatching content.
"It always seems like you gravitate towards the nearest hole."
I didn't come here to feel attacked.
Me and my brothers loved this game so much we made it a passion to make Ryu the perfect hero because we wanted him to succeed through his revenge. We do speed runs, the key is maintaining the Cyclone spin skill which can 1 shot or 2 shot all bosses including the hardest one.
Scrolled through the comments to see if anyone brought this up, or if I wasn't remembering the game correctly. This is definitely how I beat the game when I was a kid. I just remember jumping into the bosses with a spinning blade attack and taking them out pretty easily.

I remember years ago I made it my life goal to beat all three of these games. I have to admit Ninja Gaiden 3 was the hardest. You loose way too much life from being hit by the bad guys in that one. Then you have to beat it with only 5 continues. Amazing games! Then I made it my life goal to beat Battletoads. With that goal I failed in life. I could only get to level 8 In Battlefrogs. That game is insane.
Should be Level 9 - Terra Tubes. And f*ck that game!
I managed to complete Battletoads. It took me just under two months. That game is BRUTAL.
you my friend are the game god
Beating Battletoads' Turbo Tunnel Level is as massive an accomplishment as completing the game itself.
InuYugiHakusho Yeah, it's fairly easy now, but still.. those later levels are not that forgiving. It only gets harder from there. 'Volkmire's Inferno' (Level 7) is like the 2nd turbo tunnel. The Ice Cavern is harder in my opinion in the original version of the game and is slightly easier in the Japanese. If you've played the Japanese version of Battletoads, you will notice just how many improvements there are, like difficulty-wise. The 'Clinger Winger' level (11) is the one that you can't beat if you're emulating the game, which means that even if I want to beat it, I gotta be playing on a real NES and on an old CRT TV. Input lag has to be decreased to it's minimal.
4:12 It's so weird to see people buying new games today and posting "took me 30 hours to beat it" etc. What?? Growing up on the 8bit and 16bit era, it was RARE to beat a game! Like James here with Ninja Gaiden, I owned many games that I never beat, ever!
It sounds like the ninja is making up his words on the spot.
I feel your frustration James, it took me nearly twenty years and I was able to beat Ninja Gaiden myself. The game was relentless back then and it is relentless now.
The 12 year olds in the 90s were hardcore nam vets.
Same goes for now days.
