I realize especially for trout you sometimes need a light tippet for properly presenting small flies, but for warm water fish, you can fish a 3 wt. with a 6 lb. tippett for just about everything, with no fear of breaking off fish or playing fish too long. It’s my favorite combination, lots of rod bend even with smaller fish, which are more plentiful in many waters. The amount of wind is usually what causes me to bump up to a 4 or 5 wt.
Dan, you should rename this video to "FFD Brings a Knife to a Gun Fight" 😂 Seriously, it's neat to see how each of us use the tools we enjoy catching fish. Beautiful brownie. ☮ from North Idaho. p.s. scheduled to be on the Upper Columbia Friday for a half-day. Hoping it's a productive morning 🎣
My biggest fish so far was a just over 19in brown on a 6'8 aventik 3wt from Amazon, my inexperience on a fly rod and small light tackle made the fight over 5mins long, even with a friend to net it! You made it look easy, nicely done!
How about that feeling when a big fish runs upriver? It doesn't happen often and it always gets my blood pumping. You know its big when it takes line going upstream.
Dan, did Dryft shutter their business? I purchased the jeans wading pants and love em. Was going to look up some info and check other products but cannot get to their website. No links work either! Thought you might know what’s going on.
I was just emailing the owner yesterday, I will take a look to make sure everything is good with their website. But they are definitely open for business!
IMO you shouldnt even be asking to fish above somebody. "Can I fish around or fish upstream" are both scumbag questions to ask somebody actively fishing on a river. At least you said something before high holing him.

@@barry4fish my rule of thumb? If the line can fit through the eye of the hook, I fish it :))
A couple nice hefty brown trout, Thanks for Sharing Dan.
You bet!

Love that - good luck on your trip Justal!
Dan, that was a tank and I am super glad he didn't run you downstream too far
I was worried about that too - he went up for the first part of the fight, glad he chose that direction for sure!
Love the sound of the Ross Colorado! Picked one up awhile back as well
They do have a great sound for sure
Using ultralight gear, I used to get fish like this all the time on Lake Harriet up the Clackamas system. Nothing like a chonk brownie on a Sage Dart.
So much fun!
Wow, nice browns, Dan. Not a tooonnn of those up here in the NW so it's always fun to see, let alone on a 3wt (even if it's a 'beefy' 3wt).
I know right? Had to travel to Utah for this one :)).
I have never caught a brown trout. I am looking forward to it.
This one was definitely a TANK - they really are pretty special to catch.

Catching big fish on 3wts are fun. I like to use a 7ft 3wt and if I get lucky with a big one it's always a blast!
So much fun :))
@@FlyFishDan But it has nothing to do with serious streamer fishing. Way too light!
Good technique to net that Brown 🙌
Thanks!
Guy downstream standing there in the background as you caught that fish. I could hear the "Well, shucks" Good man though.
I know right?? Lol
Nice! Well, I think that I will give the 5 wt a rest and put my 3 wt to work.
Thanks.
It's been tough for me to pick up the 5wt recently - so much fun on the 3 :))
Caught a 29” Chinook on a 3wt a while back on the Touchet. No kidding.
Woah...
REAL NICE!!
Thanks bigron!!
Hello Dan beautiful, beautiful fish, and very, very nice day for fly fishing right?🤗🤗🤗😁😁😁 Fish ooon.🤠🤠🤠
Thanks Martin! FISH-ON indeed!!
Dude, I lost a 17 inch rainbow on a 6WT a few days ago. I don’t even know how this is possible.
I wasn’t easy - but man it was a ton of fun
Any tips on which flys would best on the Yakima?
Shoot me an email, I'll give you the scoop
Do you use a wading staff?
Recently, I have been using a hiking pole (blew out my back) - I need the extra stability for now anyway :))
@@FlyFishDan haha nice 👍
@@FlyFishDan yeah I’ve done the same thing to fighting fish and having to go down stream with it I’ll fall right on my ass haha
Go off some people 😂
Tight lines buddy 👍
Hi Dan!! Was great talking to you. Lew. Keep in touch if you can
You too Lew! Can't wait to try one of the special patterns you tied up!
No Skulpzilla? You feeling ok, Dan? Baby ducks instead? He went that away 👉
I know right! Playing outside the box on this day :))
I'd be impressed if it was a three weight bamboo rod. I caught a 25" brown on a 7'9" bamboo 5 weight. It wasn't in water this fast, to be sure.

I was thinking the exact same thing when he initially run up a very swift river taking line with him. Good stuff
What fly did you use ?
I was using a yellow mini dungeon from Redd's Flies

@@FlyFishDan great! Thanks.
PS. Your beard looks great the way you have it!!
@@bigcarp1414 thanks Lew - it will never be as impressive as yours :))
A 20👀
So good :))
That had to feel like a whale on a 3wt
So good!

You my friend...are a moron. Thanks for watching
