Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. I am also an accomplished at casting a fly rod - whether it is fly fishing casting for distance, fly fishing casting for accuracy, the double haul, roll cast, tower cast and many more fly fishing casting techniques - I can show you the basics when it comes to casting a fly rod. I also will cover many topics that relate to getting started with fly fishing. From your basic fly fishing setups, flies and fly boxes - we cover all the fly fishing needs for beginners. Thanks for taking the time to tune into FlyFishDan and I hope you consider subscribing to my fly fishing channel. Cheers and FISH-ON!!!

I just got my first fly outfit for Christmas, and it came with a $99 price sticker left on the box. I also got a fly tying kit, and some materials. I tied a fly, rigged the outfit on January 2nd and went out to learn. I caught 2 bluegill on a fly I tied within my first day of fly fishing. HOOKED!

    Great video for beginners Dan.
Hey! That's me at about 8:16 in the pontoon lol. Tough day... I went back the following day and had some success (4 Cuts and a small Rainbow)
My first set up was a Reddington kit. I think I paid $130 +/- for rod, reel and line in a nice rod tube.
Often when talking to other anglers their first response to fly fishing is "I cant afford it..." and as you've shown here that's just not true.
Filming one subject/theme at different spots is a good idea. I'm probably going to steal that.
Thanks again for consistently pitting out quality content and helping folks along/starting their fly fishing journey!

The fish don't care what a rig costs ! I have had tier one level gear and after Hurricane Katrina I have been using an Eagle claw fiberglass 7 wt rod with an Okuma reel . I have caught pan fish up to 25" redfish ! Flip a fly and happy fishing Ya'll !

I have both the 5-6wt and 8-9 wt walmart setups. I thought my line was trash until I gave it a bath and put on line dressing. Now even though I've stretched the line to the point it hardly stretches. (Rookie here over done it) but now it casts better than it ever did.

I have one of these walmart cortland 5/6 wt rods and it will chuck 80 feet no problem. I use it mainly as a practice rod and I agree its a awesome dirt cheap rod for someone that wants to give fly fishing a try.

I started by going to Walmart and buying a cortland rod, , 2 packs of tapered leaders, wooly buggers, and foam flies for a total of under $50 in 2020. That cortland is still my best working fly rod, and reel, even WAY better than my orvis rod, and I have had so many problems with Orvis reels being broken upon delivery, then horrible customer service, that I won’t even deal with Orvis anymore!

I have fly fished for decades...people always ask me how to start out and I tell them the exact same thing you have demonstrated. Buy a Kmart set up and if you like the sport and stick with it...then upgrade to higher quality rigging.

These days I'm a lot more cost conscious now that I no longer work in the industry. I still try to buy the best gear I can get for my money, though. I have rods by St. Croix, Winston, Lamiglas, Scott, G. Loomis and L.L. Bean, but they're all at least 30 years old now. No reason to upgrade.

Thanks for this vid Dan. Ive got a similar setup from 12+ years ago. sadly havent used it but 2-3 times. am getting it out and setup again for some fun. So ive a question for you. Anywhere in SW washington that youd reccomend for for buying flies and other gear? my local walmart doesnt carry anything or ly fishing so im figure i would find a better shop to spend time at.

You are most welcome! SW WA is tough for fly shops! The Puget Sound Fly Shop will be opening up in Tacoma soon and there's Bjorn's shop in Olympia (The Fly Fisher). Bjorn's shop is small - but he has an awesome selection of flies, most of which he ties himself. Hope that helps!
