    I ordered 72 set yesterday. Watching your explanation, I feel good. Thank you.

    When I look at some of my large pencil sets the only colours used are basically the same as the ones in Derwent light-fast. Partially because of what I draw, and partially because I only use light-fast pencils for the most part (my stuff tends to go on my wall so it gets exposure to sunlight). . So it is not really much of a surprise for me that these are the colours which have passed the test. Yes I love to have loads of bright colours, they are beautiful, but in reality I rarely use them and it is the muted violets of the world that get the most use. My pastel pencils actually have 36 totally untouched although the rest are getting very short.
    Thank you for the well considered review, the layering possibilities are very attractive.

    Thank you Claire for another great review. I have the Luminance and all of the Derwents and I admit I doubt I’ll be getting these simply because I love bright colours and I’m not an artist I’m a colourist. I do think people need to understand that not all pencils are made for all purposes so if they don’t suit you, don’t buy them.
    I wouldn’t put them down simply because they’re not bright enough as I understand they don’t suit me esp as I have the Luminance but I agree that once 72 are out we’ll see them sell well. Derwents have an excellent name and a no 1 Lightfast rating on all pencils is incredible.👍🏻😍🌹

    Thanks for creating this video.These pencils are new to me, I have had, love and have used Derwent pencils for about 20+ years, I still have a large selection of the now discontinued Signature pencils as well as a nice set of
    Coloursoft, Drawing set,I also have sets of Inktense, and Graphitint. Other brands of pencils keep me busy, including prismacolor premier and Lyra Rembrandt. I didn't realize Derwent had developed and brought out new pencils.As mentioned, I also have a large set of Lyra Rembrandt oil based pencils too, of which most have a really good lightfast rating. 70 out of 72 Iare lightfast which I think is fantastic. My 72 pencil tin has a table with LF listed ratings. I'm not sure I'm ready to rush out to buy these new pencils yet, there isn't a lot of colour variation mainly muted, dark, neutral, earthy tones and very few bright colours.

    Thanks for the great review. I've just checked on the Derwent website and they have a sample card that is not in stock yet, that seems to show the full colour range - as tiny swatches on the front of the card. I know this is not very useful, but perhaps gives an indication of the colours that are still to be released (if you zoom in). They look really interesting, but oh my word, they are expensive.

    Great video - I’m testing them out at the moment and I’m finding the black to be very green which is odd. I’m also finding they aren’t as great on pastelmat as I’d hoped

    I leave a comment under your Luminance review this morning, asking how you thought the two compared, and this afternoon you bring out this video; I couldn't ask for a better response! Thank you. I received the Scarlet and Sandstone open stock yesterday, & had to wait for today to try them out, & I love them. I thought the hardness was comparable with the Polychromos, but certainly softer than Derwent Procolours. I tried to compare them with similar shades, but I thought the colours were much punchier than either Polychromos or Procolours. I did notice that the brightness couldn't quite match with Prismacolors though. So, I will be buying pencils as and when, to supplement my other Derwent pencils and I am looking forward to seeing the full range by 2019.

      So glad you like them! They are on the harder side but have such great pigment coverage with little pressure that it’s kind of hard to describe them exactly! X

    Great review! I own the Derwent Coloursoft pencils 72 set. I wonder if these lightfast pencils are the same colors as the Coloursoft. Do you own any Coloursoft to compare some of the colors?

    Great review. I'll buy a few open stock and see how they work with my other pencils. It's a shame they've ended up such an unbalanced colour range. That and the very high price are both a bit off-putting. I hope they manage to tweak the formulation and get some bright colours through the lightfast testing next year.

    • @laitae
      @laitae 6 років тому

      I agree, are they planning to churn new pencils every year or so without thinking through the colour range? They really should have waited until they develop a full range of the whole colour spectrum.

    • @claudiahemmings2080
      @claudiahemmings2080 6 років тому

      Yep, they should have allowed time for the possibility that half their planned range would fail the official lightfast tests. This is their first attempt at a fully lightfast coloured pencil - it was unrealistic of them to just assume that most would pass the test.

  • @suewilkinson910
    @suewilkinson910 6 років тому +6

    Such dull colours. I think these look really boring. I know they are bringing more out later, but this tin is most unappealing to me. I can see the blend is very good. But the beautiful Luminance pencils are not going to loose favour to these unless the colour stock changes dramatically. Even then, they probably will hold their place in artists favour.
    Good to see though. You do a very good video.

  • @UTleochi
    @UTleochi 6 років тому +1

    Oh, and I forgot to mention, that red pigments are by nature the least lightfast, so it's very difficult the get them to be permanent. No wonder that Derwent only managed a single red, lol. ;) I wonder if that purple they are selling for 10p really is as lightfast as they claim. Purples are very fugitive, too. (Yes, I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to pigments. *grins*)

    • @ColourwithClaire
      @ColourwithClaire  6 років тому +4

      I don’t think a company so huge who must’ve spent tonnes of money on vigorous testing would make false claims x

    • @UTleochi
      @UTleochi 6 років тому

      Colour with Claire Only time will tell. The Inktense for example don’t score high on lightfastness, but they’re not marketed as lightfast, of course. Even the very expensive Procolours aren’t as lightfast as their price would lead one to expect. Let’s hope the DL won’t disappoint. :)

  • @UTleochi
    @UTleochi 6 років тому

    Thank you for yet another wonderful review. Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed with the colour range. Derwent market them as LF1, but they hardly provide any brighter colours. And only one single red in a collection of 36 is simply ridiculous. Earth colours are by nature the lightfastest pigments, so that's not such a huge deal imho. Luminance offer more variety in their pack of 20! I think those pencils are vastly overpriced, considering Derwent use mostly earth colours. (In watercolours earth pigments are always the cheapest, even in the most expensive brands.) The pencils themselves look very nice, I like pencils with that natural wood look - (I'm looking at you, Karismas and Luminances ;)) I also like the readable print on them. I hate the silver/gold print on both Luminance and Polychromos, they're so hard to read! I'd give the Derwent Lightfas a try if they were more reasonably priced, but I'm afraid I will pass, and rather invest in more Luminance. They only offer 76 colours, but their colours are more universally usable.

    The price Of these pencils is absolutely ridiculous. I don't like to feel like I'm getting ripped off and that's exactly how I would feel if I bought these. When the procolours came out they were way overpriced too and still are. They are scratchy and definitely not worth the money, just like these pencils. Some people may buy them at this price but I won't be one of them,no matter how good they may be.

    • @ColourwithClaire
      @ColourwithClaire  6 років тому +8

      I understand where you’re coming from but what you have to understand is that these pencils were created predominantly for professional artists who might sell their artwork for hundreds if not thousands of pounds, and wouldn’t think that the price was expensive at all for premium quality 100% lightfast Pencils. I do think when you’re a colouring book colourist like me it can be hard to justify the price, but you have to think about the market these pencils were intended for xx
