PART 2: Which pencils I recommend from this list! For beginners, advanced artists, skin, hair, coloring pages, and more. Watch it now: ua-cam.com/video/dnR5bI5moio/v-deo.html
The cretacolor megacolor pencils have their own sharpener available on amazon and Jerry's Artarama (where I got mine because it was cheaper, 4 us dollars vs 15 us dollars) called the Cretacolor Mega Duo sharpener. it's an all around good sharpener for even some of my softer pencils although I still love my T-gall for the really soft ones.
One other thing, Prismacolor Premier is most of what I have and they're my absolute favorite. I just bought a 24 count of the "Premier Verithin". I didn't see them on your list unless I missed it. It's my understanding they're harder than their main line and better for fine details. Have you used them and did you have an opinion on them if so? Don't need detail lol just curious if they're generally pretty good.
I do not understand why anyone would give this video a thumbs down. A lot of time and effort went into this review of so many brands of colored pencils. This is very valuable information. Thank you making this video. THUMBS UP! 👍
@@vivanecrosis what about her voice? It sounds perfectly fine to me and yes, I am an American born and raised. I do have trouble with some British accents when watching watercolor botanical tutorials. They are great artists but hard to understand.
@@Darkthestral1 I love that her wants, needs, and concerns of what pencils do/dont is SPOT ON with mine, I've given up on watching others reviewers(for pencil reviews) because they are so different
I've watched all the big art UA-camrs but your break down of color pensils was the most comprehensive I've seen 💯. Whereas most artists only speak on more notable brands like Prisma's and Faber Castell, you shed light on a wider range pensil brand and the numerous applications of each...Boss Move!!!💨🔥
Even someone who's never made a social media video could see how much work went into this. Your video is so detailed and well thought out I can't imagine the time and effort it took great job this is amazing!!!
This randomly popped into my recommendations and while I don't do anything arsty I do generally enjoy watching reviews of anything and this was very well done. Having watched the whole video I'm now sorely tempted to pick up a colouring book and set of pencils and have a go at exercising what little creativity there is in me.
Oh yes yes yes, you should absolutely take a trip down that rabbit hole. It's so fun & therapeutic!!!!!! You will love it!!! Trust me I thought I wasn't creative or have any artistic talent. But I love watching these type of videos and I'm starting to come along way. But most of all it's fun fun fun & therapeutic!!!!! I can't encourage u enough, but just try it grab u s good book that ur really interested in and s good set of colored pencils I bet u become to love it!!!! Btw a great great set of colored pencils that pigment is very vibrant, the colors are very similar to Prisma colors and color so very similar to Prisma colors is a brand I've only found at target called MONDO LLAMA GOOD LUCK
Man, there are so many colored pencil brands that it makes your head spin! It can't be stated enough just how helpful informative videos like this really are!
The proof that high prices are not always synonymous with quality, sometimes a school brand or a cheaper one, is much better than many professionals. And one brand can complement another.
This video is going to be such a great resource for so many people - there's a never-ending list of brands and sets and price ranges of coloured pencils, it can be quite overwhelming! Comparisons like these are really great to help people navigate all of that :)
Buying online gives you a lot of options. Buying locally it depends on where one goes. The big craft stores you're pretty much limited to Prismas and F-C Goldfarb. Along with Crayola and Staedler. Twenty years ago there was actually more available in stores than now. Bigger urban areas are more likely to carry more options. But if you* don't know how to use them it really doesn't matter too much what you use. *you in the general sense, not you personally
Perhaps Also Muji. Those are probably ment for young artists. The brand is 🇯🇵, but not as expensive example Poca and the other Japanese brand that you tested.
I agree! Derwent Drawing are my (current) favorite pencils. BUT, I have been looking to add some yellows and reds to that earth tone set. Derwent Coloursoft wasn't up to the job, in my opinion, but I found my first pencil set (bought in 2013) Bruynzeel Design are a very nice companion set to the soft and creamy Derwent Drawing.
Great video! Windsor and Newton just released a set of 48 pencils. They are pretty nice, and not a bad price for such a good brand. I just tried them out, not sorry I got them. They hold points a little better than Prismas. Wish they had more colors, but they do blend ok.
Note Koh-I-Noor Polycolor are actually artist grade as well. Lightfast and work nicely for you if you are used to that level of hardness. They can break if you press really hard but it does not happen very often. Being from Czechia its my default colored pencil since for forever and although i underestimated them a bit at first when other brands became available but finding since that anytime the other brand just cant do something, KIN Polycolors can do it very nicely. Only 4 times or more expensive brands do some things a little bit better i think. So if you are starving artist these are great :) . Though not sure how its with open stock availability in your country... there are KIN stores in lot of countries but not in USA. In my city i can get open stock for these very easily. As for working better on cheap papers ... former soviet countries do not have as high salaries as USA so lot of people are likely to use cheap or cheaper paper. When i was a kid we used cheap thick paper for everything from watercolor to geometrical drawings, you just choose either shiny or matte side.
I’m an avid quilter so fabric is my medium. In this art, color, texture, and imagination are everything! Thank you for expanding my knowledge of colors and how they work.
I have the 150 Set of Holbein colored pencils. The most expensive, by far. They are so gorgeous. I find they a little difficult to blend. They are very buttery soft. But one day I was inspired and could color a silver spoon drawing and it came out as the most beautiful and realistic. I guess I have to learn better how to use them. My favorite colored pencils are the Luminance. Flawless.
I love colour pencils but find I don't use them enough, and I own several of the most expensive ones. But I love all the pretties so much. Thank you for this overview of them all. Really helps me decide whether it is worth expanding my collection more.
I color at night in my bed with a bright lamp sitting opposite to hand I color with. I even have a pair of strong magnifying glasses I use as well. I also color while watching TV with hubby. Plus I watercolor. lol
@@SarahRenaeClark My wife tells me the same thing. But depending on the particular project I'm working on I find I really want to pick up some open stock.
I have multiple sets of pencils and markers (and every size of each color).lol Never know when you are going to need something in the middle of the night. 🤷🏻♀️😂
Hi Sarah. Based on your previous video I bought the Arteza Expert pencils. I love them. However the Indigo colour kept breaking. I contacted Arteza and they replaced them. Great customer service. This is a great/affordable starter set for anyone colouring for fun. Thanks for these videos!
Nice video. I have a pencil problem and can't stop buying them. I have the Luminance, Prisma, Polychromo, Lyra and now Holbine, (intreestedd in the Derwent) I like mixing all the high end brands since they all do different things. I LOVE the Holbine pencils which feel like Prismas at a formal dance. The soft (sticky) white of Holbein is absolutes magical for highlights and blending. I'm going to look for your newest review on Holbeins.
I can't get over how under rated your channel currently is. I have a feeling you're going to BLOW up very soon. Especially when you continually make quality material such as this. Your video/editing is always just as high class as your art work.
I picked up a Faber Castell Polychromos set as my first set a while ago because I wanted pencils and these looked nice. Happy to hear they are such amazing quality cause I am considering buying a lot more of them. Will definitely do so now!
Thank you for your breakdown, expecially addressing not only price and blendability but skill level. For someone like me who loves to color but is not a artist. It's hard to find a good pencil because the most recommend ones are things like prisma colors that while might be worth the price for a serious artist, is not something that a straight to barely blended coloring person like me would find worth it. This video was very helpful
I am considering buying the Winsor & Newton Studio Collection, I have heard great things about them, I wish you would be able to add them to your incredible extensive review. I would like to add that I have the Chameleon Pencils and they are fantastic for Cardmakers and Bullet Jornalists because they take all the guesswork out of colouring and you can have some really nice results in a quick manner and they are so easy to carry around. I can stamp several tiny images and then just colour them sitting in my sofa while watching tv. No big tins to move around. I recommend them totally for these type of crafters and planner fanatics.
i just have to say that i appreciate the amount of time and effort that went into this video! only the dedicated would get through all those pencils. as i beginner i found the information overwhelming and yet helpful at the same time. i bought a box of prismacolor premier a while back and although i have used them, i can see that i was not using them as intended. i look forward to watching your follow up video. i am still blown away by the amount of work/research that went into this project!
This was by far one of the best videos about different color pencils !! and about the holbeins I agree with you they are creamy and vibrant but they don't hold a point ,I have the full 150 set and I don't love them as much as I should for the price. In my opinion only the pastel tone are a must from holbein bc most of other brands don't do them. A must for me are my polychromos, prismacolor, caran d ache pablos ,arteza and black widows. My luminance aren't as loved only bc the color selection isn't as brighter as other sets but they do perform beautifully.
This my favorite, top video for comparing colored pencil sets. I am an artist, but also enjoy adult coloring books, of which I have several. And I DO mean several - different illustrators, themes, and paper types. I do not possess quite as many different pencil sets as you do, but it is one of my goals to do that. Thank you so much for sharing this video!
Wow, what a lot of work, I'm impressed! My favorite pencils depending on paper quality is Holbein, which didn't rate well for you. Just love the color options, blending, etc., yet find they work better on a paper with some tooth. Some of my other favorites are Polychromos, Caran d'ache Luminance and Pablos, and of course for those smooth paper coloring books, Prismacolor. I have some other brands like Derwent, etc., but the ones I listed are my go to ones. As I watch your review, it makes me realize that it's a good thing there are so many choices out there, since we're not all the same, and the different qualities will have their appeal to various consumers, for various reasons. Thank you for sharing their qualities.
Awesome comparison! I wanted to buy some nice coloured pencils for my partner, as he quite recently took an interest in colouring... We only have my childhood crayons 😅 now. I think the Lyra ones would be the most suitable for us right now ☺️ I was looking into Derwent and Koh-i-noor, too, but I am confident to go with Lyra ☺️ Thank you!
Love this video. I’m saving it to watch again and again. Takes all the guess work out. My mum bought me the Derwent set at when I was 16. I am now 55. Looooove my Derwents. This video helps me mix other pencils with them now. Thankyoooooouuuuuu!!!!
beautiful review. I am 1st time viewer of this channel. I thought the review was just going to be about comparing the pencils to each other, but you did way more than that. You tried them out in different paper, told us which paper is best for them, gave pros and cons, and compared them to each other. I am very impressed and thoroughly intrigued by the video. It was very informative. very well done!
I bow to you. What you did here is just incredible. You could have charged a lot of money for the information in your website. It is complete and easy to follow and understand. Just perfect! Thank you so much for all the work you put in.
So true about derwent studio. I have those.. Hard, good for detail etc. Unfortunately some of my pencils broke from top to bottom (like you know, the whole lenght on the pencil) when i used normal sharpener. Now I use this "automatic" and have no problem.
Oh my gosh! Im obsessed. I have just brought your colour pack. The colour catalogue is amazing. the pencil video just incredible. The amount of effort is just crazy. I cant tell you how long i have been looking for something to help me with my crafts. Now i have found it! I'm elated . Thank you thank you thank you Sarah.
Thank your for this incredible review. Watching you, I saw Cretacolor mega color and I fall in love with them and went immediately to amazon to buy it. 😁😁 I'm so happy !
I have watched so many videos of yours and many times go back and review them again as I learn more about colored pencils. You are literally the reason I have any confidence to use them! Before I saw your videos, I didn't even know what burnishing was! Can you believe that? I have stuck to my Copic markers and then realized that branching out to other media helps make you a better artist. I know this is all maybe random... but I want you to know how much you have helped me make wiser and better choices and have FUN with it all. It's supposed to be, and before I saw your channel, I was just utterly frustrated. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for the detailed review! I look forward to your next "summary" video. I agree about the Caran d'Ache Luminance not being the best on Strathmore Colored Pencil paper. I felt like there was drag on the pencils with that paper but they glide nicely on Strathmore bristol smooth paper.
I've always been naturally good at shading and blending. I have ink pens with different colors of ink, including pink, and I have no problem blending them! It's quite fun to make a piece of art with ink pens because it's something different for a change!
Thank you, i was actually considering expanding my art from pencil sketches to adding colour but knowing which set to get is confusing and overwhelming when you consider how many there actually are!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Yes- it is very evident that an immense amount of time and effort went into this video- so kind to share! Extremely informative with clear visual demonstrations... 🎉😊
Thank you for your honest review, it was really interesting especially about the Holbein pencils, like you I bought a few open stock to try and was considering getting the soft white colour but having seen your review I think that it's not the pencil for me and as they are the most expensive pencils to buy open stock here in the UK I think I'll just stick to the few I have. This is one of the best pencil comparison videos I have every seen and so useful, many thanks Lindy
I got Crayola brush pens and (I’m not a professional but) there was only one problem, they were not washable to easily and bled through most paper. But they had lots of colors and the tips didn’t break or become dull. I recommend for beginners. :)
As a newbie, I want to thank you so so much for doing thins video, it truly help's tremendously, because as a starter I have Arteza and figured it was best to go with.
Awesome review....I have the Polychromos and they are just stunning and worth the money as they are just such a joy to use. I got my neice the Arteza for Xmas and she thinks they are great....the best she's ever had apparently 👍😁😁😁
I have to thank you for posting this because I’m starting a new high school in August and I wish to stay there overnights so I’ll spend a lot of time at school which also leaves me with keeping myself entertained so I could happen to have to buy a few new art supplies for the room to have there and I wasn’t really sure which pencils to choose but now, I have lots of options :)
Hahaha I'm going to show this video to my boyfriend that said I own a "excessive" amount of pencils (I just have 1 set of each different types like pencils, markers, gel rollerballs, fineliners, brush pens, etc). I'm not an artist, just a hobbyist crazy for the colors, and my desk looks like a 10% of what we reach to see at the background of this video 🎨🖍️🖊️✏️✒️ included the white letters board. I loved to find your channel and subscribed immediately to watch more of this. Hugs from Chile 🇨🇱.
One of my First Impressions when I started to use Fantasia Colored Pencils since my Senior Year in high school (Class Of 2017) was that these fair price coloring pencils were ok to use. However, when I discovered another brand of coloring pencils called Prismacolor Premier, I asked my Art Teacher/National Art Honor Society sponsor the difference between Crayola Colored Pencils and Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils. Then he said, "The major difference between those two is that the other one has more vibrancies & pigmentation as well as the texture itself." About a year later in Summer 2018 (Taken place back in July 2018), I bought my VERY FIRST Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils - 24 Pieces & man I'm very impress with this brand, especially when I started drawing & designing my masterpiece.
The uni Posca pencils are totaly different to the uni Mitsubishi pencil. Even the uni Mitsubishi 100 set is very different from the 240 set, the feel and laydown of the pencils are both very nice. The 240 set is closer to the polychromos while the 100 set is softer and more waxier. Thank for this great video💕
I like the irojitins for their unique style. They give a sort of vintage look to colored pages. The new Kalour brand is nice and buttery. They blend great.
Wow so many more brands than I thought, although the brand that I am currently using is the 24 set Winsor & Newton Color Pencil set. They are creamy, blend well, and also come In a 48 set as well. I have used the Crayola Colored Pencils out of the 26 brands you have done so far. I am looking forward to seeing your next video & more color pencil brands added in the future. Thanks for sharing this valuable information with us and taking the time to really test these. 💕😊
I got a handful a Holbeins a few weeks ago, none of them are the oddball ones you ended up with luckily. I like them and they’re pretty to look at, but they don’t stand out enough to justify the price for me. At this point if I’m going to invest more in pencils it’ll be to supplement my 76 Luminance with the new colors. I get the feeling the Holbeins were getting the benefit of scarcity to drive up everyone’s enthusiasm for them.
@@SarahRenaeClark I have the Holbein. I found this pencil loves toothy paper. I drew an autumn leaf on a watercolor paper and I was blown away by its performance. 🍁 tooth has the surface to mix and pull through that soft gummy texture if you will.
Thank you you do the best review and good Personality in front of the camera that makes me want to stay listening to you to the end ,you also stay very professional and organized through the video thank you
When I first started colouring I was 8 Mom bought me a set of colouring pencils which helped me come 2nd in the art competition up till that point I was painting with oils and had been for a few years. I know very young but I come from a long line of artist so understandable really 😊 As I got older and was married I put away my passion for art but it did surface once in a blue moon. Now I am 58 and went to start colouring again for therapy reasons I got bogged down with all the different brands and types that really got me confused. As I sat colouring a picture from “My Australia Creative Colouring” I was using some basic sets one my hubby bought me and one that I bought by “Fabre-Castell” which had a nice mixture of hard and softer core I got so frustrated because I never learned much of what you talked about with burnishing and much more. All of this is new to me but I did find I love watercolour pencils as well as the softer core pencils I could get the extra fine details with them where as the one for detailed work I just could not use them at all I found they were just too hard a bit like using the 2H-6H graphite pencils. So for the I thought I would go and look at what I could buy online because simply I live over 300km from the nearest quality art supplier 😹😹 the draw back of living in the Aussie Outback 😊 The number of different types of pencils just blow me away but after reading the descriptions of so many different types I finally found something I was willing to spend money on through the “Art Shed” my go to these days for my paints and bought their collections of “Mont Marte” sets as I do have a few of this brand they are reasonably priced, which I’m hoping they will arrive very soon 😊 I found it very interesting watching this video as it has help this old girl to understand some of the newer terms used today and the different types of colouring pencils out there.😹 so yep I will.be watching more of your videos and I have subscribed for sure, one is never to old to learn something new😹😹thank you 🤗🤗🤗
There's no doubt that the Caran D'ache Luminance is the best if you value longevity! lol I' was looking for a hardcore test exposing the colors to raw sunlight for a year...Amazingly, the C-Luminance retained its colors very well (on the photos I've seen, almost zero fading) while ALL the others faded in different grades, even the Caran D'ache Pablo faded badly, but NOT the Luminance, it crushed all the other big names when it came to true lightfastness! It's expensive so use it only for the end product.
My brain almost exploded with all these pencils! Such a comprehensive review and comparison! Seems like there’s a lot more options for budget pencils these days(like castle art and other similar on Amazon) that would have been useful back when I was a beginner with colored pencil and couldn’t afford most sets from the expensive professional pencils. Soo after this vid, the derwent lightfast definitely still have my attention, but I’m curious about their other sets like coloursoft and procolour. Coloursoft seems similar to prismacolor, but I find it odd that derwent has so many lines of colored pencils?! I am going to buy some open stock out of curiosity, but I definitely won’t try out the Studio set. Cretacolor from what I can tell is a really great brand- I’ve been using their oil based charcoal pencils because they’re so much less messy than a normal charcoal pencil! I want to try those giant colored pencils, they’re kind of hilarious looking😂 the rage about Holbein seems to have a lot to do with their color range and the pastels, but theyre just now available on Blick in the US so I may (carefully😂) purchase some open stock and see how I like the feel of them!
Buying open stock is definitively the way to go. Trying them for yourself beats watching any number of reviews, because everyone has different preferences. I made a point of buying different colors from each set so I could still use them (that’s why I didn’t compare all the same swatch colors) instead of ending up with 20+ reds and no greens... so I expect to eventually use most of the pencils I’ve bought, even if only occasionally for variety and to give them another go! The holbeins definitely have a good set of pastels. I’d be interested to compare the actual colors against the full sets of other brands to see if they are actually unique or just well marketed. I wonder if combining a few other brands would give you the same range? Something to explore in the future maybe!
Very good video, I have bought several brands of colored pencils and I don't think I will buy more but watching videos about art materials is addictive for me. Your content is very good I will follow you
I’ve been binge watching your channel for the last week, learnt so much already thank you! You should do an updated video like this one, but with Inktense or Chromaflow and other newer releases included from other brands 😁 Love your channel! 😊
Great context and great video but you missed out the Derwent Drawing Colored Pencils which are the best set in the Derwent line but that just my two cents
Koh-I-Noor is the No. 1 brand you get in Czech Stationery shops - every kid has them since kindergarten. :) The plus is that you may buy them separately when you run out of one colour. And yes, really good for the simplest kinds of papers. :D They also sell watercolour pencils in bundles of up to 72 pieces. :)
Subscribed as soon as i heard your accent, because Australians are among the best who actually gives a thing about what they do, for real 🙌🏽 Oh there’s so much useless noise in the internet of people trying to make a quick buck so this video is surely a Treasure among all! Still going strong after 3years 🎉 THANK YOU for your effort! 🩵
As a few people have already vaguely mentioned here; the Holbein pencils are only "overpriced" outside of Japan- I'm not entirely familiar with why this is but from what I've seen, most Japanese art supplies are more expensive in Western countries while in Japan they're quite reasonably priced, this being true for stuff like Holbein's watercolors and qouache or Copics. Like just as an example I looked up how much their pencils were in one Japanese store and they were about 1,8€ per pencil, while a single Polychromos in my country is like 2,5€ (of course, all of these prices vary from store to store though). So like, yeah, there must be some weird import tax thing going on there, but ya can't really blame the pencils for it. (Of course, while the price isn't the pencils' fault, it doesn't mean they're worth it)
From what I have learned, most professional colored pencil artists like to use a combination of Polychromos and Luminance pencils. One I know of prefers either Bristol vellum or Bristol smooth, and also fabriano hot pressed watercolor paper.
Hmmm.... I must be a rebel professional colored pencil artist. I love my Holbeins, Derwent artist, Caran d ache Pablo's. Polychromos has a great color range and are nice also but I use as an addition to the aforementioned pencils. I personally can't stand the Luminance pencils. I love working on the Fabriano hot pressed watercolor paper, Coquille paper, velor mat board. All three papers are VERY different from each other and require different pencils (oil based vs wax based) for best results. The paper choice is almost as important as the pencil choice when it comes to colored pencil art. Versatility and hands on knowledge is key.
24:16 Oddly enough, I don't experience too much frustration from the breakage. When my Prismacolors break, it is at the tip and it seems to do it in a way that keeps a sharp enough point for details. Somehow, I don't know how, I am able to do fine details with Prismacolors. Only one pencil in one set (my first ever set of Prismacolors, and I still have it and most of the pencils are long and usable despite my heavy hand when it comes to my grip and how much pressure I apply), the poor, 3.5 inch (8.3 centimeter) nub remnant of the tuscan red PC937 colored pencil, is the only one that had a frustrating amount of breakage. It was also the only pencil in which every sharpener I had (a plastic battery operated sharpener, a small metal manual sharpener with a regular insert and a big insert, and a small plastic manual sharpener that only has a regular-sized insert) got hungry and ate at its wood casing (hence why the tuscan red PC937 is now a poor small nub). And because the sharpeners all kept eating at this one pencil's wooden casing, the core kept breaking badly. And this is the only pencil out of both sets (I haven't used any of the pencils in the set I just bought yet as they will make good replacements if need be, like in the case of the tuscan red soon) that this has happened to. As I said, I recently bought a second set, thinking it had different colors since the packaging looked different (both my first and second sets contain 36 soft-core colored pencils and are of the assorted type, I guess, as they don't have a theme like "portrait"; my first set has a picture of a either a preteen or teen girl with long (past the shoulders) crumple-wavy hair and a purple shirt on the box (I think this is from 2019); my second set has the rainbow butterfly on a rainbow background that is dominated with bright greens and yellows with the red and purple being the colors that pop out the most in contrast (I think this is either 2020 or 2021 packaging because I bought them this year), but I am actually glad the pencils in the second set are exact color duplicates of the ones I already have because of the poor, small tuscan red PC937 colored pencil nub.
I’ll pop a close up of all the swatches I did on the blog next week. I had hoped to have them up today but just ran out of time! Personally I don’t see much point in the black paper- but I know some people create really interesting art on black. I’d probably only use black with the pencils that REALLY stand out, like Prismacolor, Uni Posca, etc- in which case, the Polychromos might come in handy for those fine details :)
They're not as opaque as Prismacolors, so I don't think they'd do very well on black paper, except for the metallics. As a colorist, I love their translucency, but other people see it as a negative. It's all up to what you want.
Absolutely loved this video. I've been subscribed for a while, but getting notifs and sharing everywhere right now. Thank you so much...this was a lot of work and it is greatly appreciated!
hi, I'm Japanese and live in Japan. I've never seen heard Posca colored pencils here. Maybe they are sold only outside of japan. I agree with you about Holbein. I guess they are overrated. They don't perform as well as other artist grade pencils. Their colors are beautiful though.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Holbein pencils are significantly cheaper - and thus a much better buy - in Japan. I know that's the case with their watercolors, at least. For me, when I buy Holbein stuff they're generally around 25% more expensive than in Japan 😬
@@FaerieDust I think they are a great pencil and I’d love them at a lower price. I just don’t think they are justified to be the most expensive in the world (in my price comparison) and have all the hype they do!
@@SarahRenaeClark I think part of the hype is the range of pretty pastel colours - that's my impression, at least. But yeah, it's unfortunate that they're so expensive, at least outside of Japan. Like, right now the 150 set is on sale on Amazon Japan for around £175 (about what a 150 set of Polychromos would cost for me here in Sweden), while the 50 set £132 on Jackson's. The 50 set is £70 on Amazon Japan - that's almost half the price!
Hello Sarah, a German here. The Staedler Ergosoft are designed and mostly used here as school supply. Thanks so much for this great review and all the other nice, fun and informative videos! 🤩
I am only half way through this video and I have paused to (refill my drink, and) say THIS IS SO GREAT! Thank you! Am thoroughly enjoying, especially the lack of unnecessary ramble, and instead articulating the pros and cons of pencils, and the techniques or subject matters they are relevant to, rather than the clickbait type "_____ vs______ Which is Better?" So so so refreshing. And also as a non US/UK viewer.... also, so so so refreshing. Hope you are safe and well during the current lock down xo
Wow!! Just wow!! I Cant imagine how long this took. I own the caran dache luminance, faber Castell, Prismacolor, and Derwent pencils. Out of these brands caran dache is my favorite. They are FLAWLESS and magnificent. Thank you so much do this video! I will definitely be trying to new pencils!
I own a recent Derwent Artist 12 set with green barrel. They look great but perform incredibily bad. They have super hard cores with no pigment at all. Even Crayolas compared to those looks professional. I think the set your mum gave you is an older one that has better quality. I don't recommend them at all, unless they are an older set.
Great and informative video! Thank you for taking the time, money and effort into trying all of the different brands. I love your honesty in your reviews. Thank you for the information! You are an AMAZING artist!
A thorough and useful comparison - thanks SRC! There is a dizzying number of colour pencils out there. Derwent alone has Chromaflow, Coloursoft, Watercolour, Inktense, Lightfast, Procolour, Pastel, Metallic Pastel, Grafitint and Tinted Charcoal. All of them coloured pencils!
Brilliant video. Iv watched so many videos to help me choose pencils and this is far far the best and most informative. It has everything you need to make an informed decision. I wish I had seen this video BEFORE watching all of the others as I would have saved so much time.. thanks for this . I'm now a subscriber xx
As a fellow pencil collector and UA-camr I tested most of those pencils, too. I am really surprised how the opinions differ from person to person. But I loved listening to your experiences 🤗 your Art is amazing ♥️ ( Prismacolors Are more expensive in Germany than Polychromos 😩, but they are my favorite pencils, too)
I find it interesting to hear different experiences too! And that’s why I’m really careful to clarify that these are my experiences and opinions and that a lot comes down to preference. Sounds like I’ll have to check out your channel!
I have bought 2 of the sets you reviewed here. One is the Cretacolor Mega Color set of 36, and they are a pleasure to work with. the other set I got today, is the Lyra Rembrandt Lyra Polycolor set of 72 pencils. It is the first time that I have touched an oil-based pencil - they feel so different from what I am used to - in a good way. Thank you for the reviews. There are still a couple more I would like to get one day. But they are so expensive.
Fantastic video and a brilliant resource for us mortals to find just what we need in the mine field of coloured pencils. Very interesting to see how they compare and perform on different papers. Thank you for your time and effort,it is very much appreciated.
Polychrome are my go-to.They work the best for the art I do. They're vibrant where they need to be and equally subtle when I need them to be. They blend great and don't get too muddy if I blend contrasting colours.
Hello! Have you tried/do you have an opinion on Jasart colour pencils available from Eckersleys? (Australian question)
This video is so detailed. Thank you for making it!

THUMBS UP! 👍
Thank you. Appreciate it!
Maybe they don't like her voice?
I love her voice!!!
@@vivanecrosis what about her voice? It sounds perfectly fine to me and yes, I am an American born and raised. I do have trouble with some British accents when watching watercolor botanical tutorials. They are great artists but hard to understand.
Welp, now thumbs down doesn't exist so, we can just enjoy the video and ignore it :)
She reviewed 26 brands and made a chart for us!?! Subscribed :)

I agree Lindsey. Amazing work here. And I just want to thank you for bringing my attention to Sarah. Between the two of you, I have learned a lot.
Definitly
Even someone who's never made a social media video could see how much work went into this. Your video is so detailed and well thought out I can't imagine the time and effort it took great job this is amazing!!!
Thank you so much!

This randomly popped into my recommendations and while I don't do anything arsty I do generally enjoy watching reviews of anything and this was very well done. Having watched the whole video I'm now sorely tempted to pick up a colouring book and set of pencils and have a go at exercising what little creativity there is in me.
Creativity is contagious! I dare you!
DO you have those pencils and book yet??!! You wont regret it, coloring will change your life!

Btw a great great set of colored pencils that pigment is very vibrant, the colors are very similar to Prisma colors and color so very similar to Prisma colors is a brand I've only found at target called
MONDO LLAMA
GOOD LUCK
Man, there are so many colored pencil brands that it makes your head spin! It can't be stated enough just how helpful informative videos like this really are!
The proof that high prices are not always synonymous with quality, sometimes a school brand or a cheaper one, is much better than many professionals.
And one brand can complement another.
I don't agree with you
This video is going to be such a great resource for so many people - there's a never-ending list of brands and sets and price ranges of coloured pencils, it can be quite overwhelming!
I agree, what an amazing resource
Thanks! as a person who's struggling of what to buy, this really helped me alot to identify the difference of all the colored pencils!💕
Some more gems to try: Derwent Drawing, Bruynzeel Expression, Bruynzeel Design, Deli.
Ooohh don’t tempt me to buy more!! 😭🙈😜
I love derwent drawing they are so soft and creamy 🤩
I am born in CzechoSlovakia too and I use Koh-i-nor Mondeluz set. Available open stock too.
I brought the 12 set of caran d'ache luminance set and im absolutely in love thanks for the review
I’m an avid quilter so fabric is my medium. In this art, color, texture, and imagination are everything! Thank you for expanding my knowledge of colors and how they work.
Wow your hand must be hurting after testing soooo many pencils! Thank you very much!
Actually my eyes more than my hands! Too much time under the studio lighting, staring closely at colors 😜
Flawless.
That's funny. I personally hate the Luminance but absolutely agree with you on the Holbeins. One of my very favorites.
I love the voice coming from the background saying "you don't need any more colored pencils".
Plus I watercolor. lol
Loooool my husband says things like that too hehehe “you don’t need anymore pencils”. I always say oooh but there are no two pencils the same

Comments like these are so encouraging!! Thank you Annie!
Thank you!
Pablos are one that I didn’t end up with. I’ve heard good things about them!
I truly enjoy artists that have type a personalities like myself. Excellent comparisons and detail to your research.
I think the Lyra ones would be the most suitable for us right now ☺️ I was looking into Derwent and Koh-i-noor, too, but I am confident to go with Lyra ☺️ Thank you!

beautiful review.

So true about derwent studio. I have those.. Hard, good for detail etc. Unfortunately some of my pencils broke from top to bottom (like you know, the whole lenght on the pencil) when i used normal sharpener. Now I use this "automatic" and have no problem.
That's an insane amount of work, wow! Will definitely use this as reference in the future! New fan here 😊

I have watched so many videos of yours and many times go back and review them again as I learn more about colored pencils. You are literally the reason I have any confidence to use them! Before I saw your videos, I didn't even know what burnishing was! Can you believe that?

Interesting! Thanks for the info!
I like the irojitins for their unique style. They give a sort of vintage look to colored pages. The new Kalour brand is nice and buttery. They blend great.
What a great comparison! I'm only launching my channel, it's so inspiring to see more established UA-camrs doing such a great job ☺️
I suspect the same! They are definitely nice, but at the price they are, I’d also rather more Luminance!
@@SarahRenaeClark I have the Holbein. I found this pencil loves toothy paper. I drew an autumn leaf on a watercolor paper and I was blown away by its performance. 🍁 tooth has the surface to mix and pull through that soft gummy texture if you will.
Thank you you do the best review and good Personality in front of the camera that makes me want to stay listening to you to the end ,you also stay very professional and organized through the video thank you
So nice colors, I'm jealous now.
When I first started colouring I was 8 Mom bought me a set of colouring pencils which helped me come 2nd in the art competition up till that point I was painting with oils and had been for a few years. I know very young but I come from a long line of artist so understandable really 😊
As I got older and was married I put away my passion for art but it did surface once in a blue moon.
So for the I thought I would go and look at what I could buy online because simply I live over 300km from the nearest quality art supplier 😹😹 the draw back of living in the Aussie Outback 😊
The number of different types of pencils just blow me away but after reading the descriptions of so many different types I finally found something I was willing to spend money on through the “Art Shed” my go to these days for my paints and bought their collections of “Mont Marte” sets as I do have a few of this brand they are reasonably priced, which I’m hoping they will arrive very soon 😊
I found it very interesting watching this video as it has help this old girl to understand some of the newer terms used today and the different types of colouring pencils out there.😹 so yep I will.be watching more of your videos and I have subscribed for sure, one is never to old to learn something new😹😹thank you 🤗🤗🤗
There's no doubt that the Caran D'ache Luminance is the best if you value longevity! lol
I' was looking for a hardcore test exposing the colors to raw sunlight for a year...Amazingly, the C-Luminance retained its colors very well (on the photos I've seen, almost zero fading) while ALL the others faded in different grades, even the Caran D'ache Pablo faded badly, but NOT the Luminance, it crushed all the other big names when it came to true lightfastness!
It's expensive so use it only for the end product.
The quality, usefulness, and content of this video is astounding.

Great context and great video but you missed out the Derwent Drawing Colored Pencils which are the best set in the Derwent line but that just my two cents
I love your honesty, and I appreciate all of your work!
I've been living in Czechia for 3 months now and I'm still impressed to see the Koh-I-Noor at every corner 😄

Still going strong after 3years 🎉
THANK YOU for your effort!
(Of course, while the price isn't the pencils' fault, it doesn't mean they're worth it)
Wow just wow. What a huge undertaking. Thank you so much for the time, money and energy you put into this.
Thank you! I appreciate your comment!!
From what I have learned, most professional colored pencil artists like to use a combination of Polychromos and Luminance pencils. One I know of prefers either Bristol vellum or Bristol smooth, and also fabriano hot pressed watercolor paper.
That’s a great combo! I gave my dream team recommendation in my video this week 😊
@@SarahRenaeClark do you recommend me prismacolors pencils if you do where you think I can find them the cheapest

Wow! Thank you so much for this very detailed description! It has obviously taken you a lot of time. It is greatly appreciated!
+Sharon Vaughan thank you! Yes, lots of preparation, planning, research and purchases!
I have polychromos, haven't tried them on black paper though... are they good on toned or black paper or should I stick to white?
they're doing good on toned and dark grey imo, haven't tried on black yet.
@@astrinymris9953 I agree, I love the translucency of the Polychromos!
Posca might be known as mitsubishi uni pencils there. They are marketed under a few names :)
Have you tried felissimo colored pencils
Hello Sarah, a German here. The Staedler Ergosoft are designed and mostly used here as school supply.
Thanks so much for this great review and all the other nice, fun and informative videos! 🤩
Good to know!
I use my Prismacolor Verithins for details on my Prismacolor Premier drawings and art pieces as they are harder and hold a nice fine point.
I am only half way through this video and I have paused to (refill my drink, and) say THIS IS SO GREAT! Thank you!
Am thoroughly enjoying, especially the lack of unnecessary ramble, and instead articulating the pros and cons of pencils, and the techniques or subject matters they are relevant to, rather than the clickbait type "_____ vs______ Which is Better?"
So so so refreshing.
And also as a non US/UK viewer.... also, so so so refreshing. Hope you are safe and well during the current lock down xo
Haha and I've just popped back to say this video has bought out the BEST PEOPLE in the comments section. Such abundant love and admiration. Gold.
Thank you for this review! Have you ever come across Tombow Irotijen or Marco Renoir pencils?
I heard about both in the past few days! A bit too late for this review- but I’ll do some basic research so I can add some info on the website :)
Wow!!
This isn’t even the biggest comparison I’ve done! I did it again recently with 90 brands!
Interesting! Thanks for the updated review!
Perhaps it’s the papers used. I’m shocked diff type of paper can yield such diff results
@@hemjoo this is also true!
This is the best pencil comparison that I have ever seen!!! Fantastic!!!! Thank you!!!
This is one amazing reference video. I had to mark it "watch later" so I can refer back. Thank you for all the hard work on this!
