    I find it amazing that people complain about the price of the Polys. They think the Polys are expensive compared to the Prismas. News flash people: You'll be spending more money on your Prismas vs. the Polys. Why? Because you'll go through your Prismas faster than the Polys. I watched an interesting video where the person (SuperRaeDizzle) took 1 Prisma and colored blank sheets of paper (standard size 8.5 x 11}. She wanted to know how many pages she could color with 1 pencil. With the Prisma, she managed to color 4.5 pages. With the Poly, she colored 31 pages. Yeah, people, for every 1 Poly, you'll need 7.5 Prismas. Now break it down into money and you tell me which one is truly the more expensive one.

      Polychromos are more expensive but they have better value than prismas, I'm a beginner and have been using prismas but not I switched to polys and I just love how infinitely you can layer them without having a wax build up and I love the details I can get and also you can get more depth in your work than what you get on prismas. With Polys you can also work continuously without sharpening your pencils once in a while. My prismas really don't last long like my polys. Well I'm simply saying I super love the switch. As a beginner I fell in love with my polys but I still have my prismas though cause I'm not using them that much anymore since I had my polys.

      Thank you :D Yeah I agree, the sharpener I use works really well at preventing breakage on the prismas. They used to break constantly when I use hand held metal little sharpeners, but the derwent superpoint manual sharpener is amazing :) I really like to use prismas with the polychromos, they really complement each other well! Btw congrats with your growth recently, you are absolutely killing it! You really deserve it :D

      Right now I`m using Prismacolor pencils, because I have recently started drawing more portraits and they`re quite good for a begginer, but I wouldn`t say my white pencil is really good, it doesn`t layer that good on top of dark colors and it doesn`t look that vibrant. I would like to try Caran d`ache Luminance, as I`ve seen you achieve great results with it.

    After deliberating over which pencils to buy for such a long time, I decided to go with Polychromos. The reason for this choice was that I was able to get a set of 36 at a discounted price because the tin was slightly damaged. After watching your very informative video, I’m so glad I came home with the Polychromos! I love them!

  • @annetteatkins7164
    @annetteatkins7164 4 роки тому +23

    One thing I would add to the comparison, is the transparency. Polychromos are more transparent then Prismacolors. I first watched this video about two years ago, and ultimately bought the full set of 120 Polychromos. But then I started doing some work on black paper. I just couldn’t get the color density I wanted, and the problem was apparently related to how transparent the colors are: too much of the black paper was showing through. So now I’ve invested in a set of 150 Prismacolors. They have a greater opacity and for this type of art, that was important.

Aside from Poly's I have like 4 sets of some amazing less expensive oil pencils. But I realize that it's easier to make a great budget oil pencil versus a wax one because I cannot find a GOOD budget wax pencil. Once my prismas are almost gone I won't repurchase as much as I love them. I'll get the Caran dache luminance or the Derwent Lightfast. Both oil and wax types have their uses which are completely different. I LOVE using polychromos and prismas together. It's a match made in heaven.

    I have both and although I hate the breaking and constant sharpening of the Prismas I still choose my Prismas over the Polychromos. Polychromos are such a great pencil and so well made and you don't have to sharpen them as much... but they just don't blend as well or as easy as the Prismas. They do blend, but for me it takes a lot longer to blend than the prismas. As far as the "white" pencil goes. I don't like either Prisma or Faber Castell. I've had the faber castells for years, and I just recently got the prismacolors. It honestly comes down to preference. I prefer the prismacolors because I like the softer lead, they are easier to blend and have a closer consistency to pastels. The only problem is that they wear down fast because of how soft they are. The faber castells are a pretty hard lead, so they don't need to be sharpened nearly as much and last a lot longer. You can definitely still blend them and the pigments are still really good, I just prefer the pigment in the prismacolors and I love the softer lead.

    I have the 150 set of Prismacolor and only 12 of the Polys. I am happy with my Prismas. One of the biggest things I like is the color is pretty clearly printed on, whereas it is hard to read on Polys and Luminance, both of which are great pencils otherwise. The color so clear on Prismas makes it easy to sort and select pencils for projects.

    This was so helpful, I’m not an artistic person and don’t have a clue what I’m looking for but buying as a gift for a friend who would like to illustrate children’s books. Definitely going for the Fabers. I read they’re a good brand but the information you gave about fine detail and drawing animals has made my mind up, also want them to look and feel like good quality so thank you!!

    I do like Prismacolor pencils, and still have most of an older set bought in the early 1990s for my aunt, who later gave them to me. I don’t buy them anymore because they seem to have quality issues. I also have a full set of the Polychromos pencils, they feel totally different. I like both brands, but I think Prismacolor has a better color selection. Either way, I rarely use colored pencils so it doesn’t matter all that much!

  • @JBSouls

    Prisma Colors are a) badly manufactured, b) prone to breaking, and c) known for wax bloom.
    Considering the Prisma Colors have to be imported to my country they are almost as expensive as the Polychromos.. so no point in getting them unless the quality issues will be fixed at some point.
    So, if you can afford it (this list is in order of "expensive" to "seems like I won't be eating this month"):
    Oil based --> Polychromos
    Wax based --> Caran d'ache Luminance (hardly any wax bloom and extremely lightfast)
    Mixed --> Holbein

    I love the way you explain things! Thank you so much for this, I really needed it. I bought the Prismacolors because of the price and because I had heard that they were the best colored pencils you could buy unless you were a professional artist. I hadn't heard anything at all about the Faber Castells. I tend to hold my pencils and pens way too tightly and my hand always hurts quickly. I also break leads all the time, so I go through pencils pretty quickly and this is very expensive. It almost seems like you need to have both kinds of pencils to get all of the benefits and use each set for different things. Thank you for explaining this so well.

    Thanks for this video, kept it short but long enough for all the facts and the table you made and followed was super useful. I'm trying to decide which pencils to buy and from this I've worked out I need to cross prisma off my option list as I just get too annoyed at pencil breakage. As much as I want the gorgeous blendable colour I am not good enough at sharpening to keep them working, not to mention they r bound to all get wrecked in shipping from the US to AUS. Thanks so much :) Have subscribed because of this video.

    This morning I've only watched about umpteen watercolor videos trying to learn what I can and understand them better. I'm an experienced floral designer and 'well rounded' artist/crafter who is willing to try just about anything (lol except knitting) and love watercolors...but not done a lot with them. Recently I've been stamping greeting cards and playing with a few lower end water color pencils & really want to make my cards the best they can be. (and who knows if the cards go well, I'll venture into bigger paintings.) I'm of the opinion that while some things are good to buy frugally & others you just have to spend a tiny more for better quality outcome. Your video this morning was sooo encouraging to me because you put it in a way that anyone can understand. It was so well organized and presented in a way that I am no longer confused on what is what and what to look for when shopping. That seemed to be the hardest part for me. I learned new terms also that I've not heard in other videos. Thank you so very much for putting this video out there and making me feel more confident on my journey into watercolors!! You are awesome!

    Love the video! Personally, I prefer Polys because they last longer (in my experience). Plus Prismas get a clear, hard wax buildup when you add lots of layers that make it hard to blend and looks super shiny.
    That said, I think Prismas DO have great pigmentation and are awesome for learning techniques with. I gave some to my niece (an aspiring artist) and she loves them.

    • @kiblaze
      @kiblaze 6 років тому +68

      Yes. I think people tend to get expensive brands because they are more archival/lightfast. I've made decent work with prang, crayola, and so on cheap or mid-priced materials. But the stuff I sell I try to use Artist grade in case they hang it up and light hits it.

    • @saeyoungchoi6604

    • @kiblaze
      @kiblaze 6 років тому +5

      Saeyoung Choi you could look up lightfastness on the materials you do have access to maybe? Or just be careful it isn't exposed to light for extended periods of time if you aren't able to find any lightfast cheap materials? All my cheaper things are in my sketchbooks so they seem alright due to not sitting in the sun/light much. They're only exposed when I worked on them and then when I show it to anyone. I hope this helps some.

    Hi, Kirsty and your legion of followers! Cheers for this really useful breakdown of comparative performance; very informative as always. I personally have a silly amount (several hundred pencils and probably the whole range or most) of Prismacolours and also a whole batch of Laurentian included (not sure if they are well known, but I bought a job lot - probably similar to another of your vids I noticed!) which are comparable with Prisma/Karismacolour in most aspects. Really useful tips and insights here; especially the note about colour fastness and/or fading with the Prismas. Guess I should invest in some Fabers and also a few Caran D'ache to get optimum quality! Obviously, not necessary for an amateur, but getting going again as a pro, so invaluable advice. Thanks so much for all of your vids; massively impressive and helping to teach an old dog new tricks is no small achievement for a young artist. Just fabulous, so thank you so much and please keep on smashing it with the best art tutorials on UA-cam....! (P.S: yeah; I have to agree with the comments regarding the creepy post about your looks: disrespectful, sexist and inappropriate. Probably meant well, but this is not the 1950s, mate!)

    I personally like using Prisma because of how creamy they are, and I was surprised when she said you couldn't get that much details lol but I guess that's depending. I use Prisma all the time, but the only problem I can say I have with Prisma is the tips breaking because of how delicate they are. I definitely recommend Prisma color for beginners, and remember that the black and white are extremely crucial lol. White becomes your best friend in Prisma NY friends and black becomes your secret weapon

    Thanks Kirsty. I find my Prismas smudge a lot when layering and colouring and transfer colour onto your hands too while colouring with much more pencil dust that can get dirty on the page. I have to spray it with workable fixative as I go on. Polys are rich and creamy and don't have that pencil dust or as much transference, easier to work with.
