- Episode 77
After 12,000 years, they're finally back the zoo says! Where the Africa Rocks ends, a portal to the prehistoric past begins! Condors, jaguars, camels, elephants and other animals from all over the world put together to create a geographical theme? How does that make sense? The Elephant Odyssey, opened in 2009, is a living abstract impression of what Southern California looked like during the Pleistocene age. A time period that occurred between 2.5 million to 12,000 years ago. All of these animals are living descendants of the extinct that once called the Southwestern United States home - teratorns, mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and more! A concept never executed before, and it's up to you to find the important message behind it. Enjoy another one of the San Diego Zoo's gems.
Special Thanks to Marc! For willingly joining me to film on my visit

Elasmotherium lived in Eurasia. Elephant Odyssey was designed to mimic Pleistocene Southern California.
The Indian rhino is a greater one horned rhino
I never quite got why zoo enthusiasts have such a grudge against Elephant Odyssey. I think the idea of representing extinct animals is really innovative and interesting. It’s at least a refresher from the standard ‘Africa’ and ‘Big cat’ -styled zones. The utilitrees might not be pretty but they are cool. I know I’m at a zoo, I don’t need them to be exact replicas of baobabs or whatever, as long as they’re stimulating the elephants.
This is coming from someone that likes this area a lot, but I do actually think the stream is the best exhibit lol. If only because I’d never seen anything else like it, and I had the most fun standing there trying to see everything. I do think the lion exhibit is a bit on the small-side, I would honestly rather both cat exhibits were just for the two(?) jaguars
Another thing is, and I wanted to mention this but ran out of footage, if this exhibit were in any other zoo, no one would complain. It's only because it doesn't "hold up to San Diego Zoo standards".
Frog Whisperer indeed
@@ZooToursWdym by this? I'm honestly surprised people even had an issue with this side of the Zoo to begin with, but speaking as a local who's seen it numerous times, I don't understand how people even claim it doesn't meet "SDZ Expectations"
This zoo exhibit the elephant odyssey is like a living museum we need more zoo exhibits like this
Fun Fact: The Horn and Hoof Mesa was the location where the first ever video on UA-cam was filmed, which was called "Me at the zoo" for those of you who don't know
i loved the theme of san Diego zoo elephant odyssey. ice age of california. very creative.
Been to that exhibit 2 times before! It was great! Unfortunately, Tembo the elephant did pass away a few months ago! Fortunately, I give the San Diego Zoo 2 thumbs up, which is one of my favorite zoos of all times! But In fact, you should visit the San Diego Zoo Safari Park soon! Heaving Kentrosaurus!🐘
The San Diego zoo is quite literally my favorite place if you couldn’t tell from their logo as my profile picture. My dream is to work there and I wanted to thank you for doing an amazing job doing the zoo justice in the 2 videos you’ve made so far. I can’t wait for the next zoo tours video and again thank you for putting out cheerful, quality content during these uncertain times.
Same
I was in San Diego last March and I enjoyed every moment of walking through Elephant Odyssey. Great job, Zoo Tours!
The Pleistocene American Southwest is probably my favorite ecosystem it not only has an unusual collection of fascinating animals from all over the world but it was the home of my favorite animal smilodon fatalis aka the saber tooth cat seeing it come back to life seeing it come back to life is epic 👌
I went to San Diego for the first time in January, and Elephant Odyssey was my favorite complex in the zoo. Excellent coverage of the exhibit!
Wow, I love that the zoo can hold up elephant individuals. Thanks, zoo tours. I love elephants!
Dude you gotta apply to Nat Geo or something.
Yes
I actually got to see this exhibit a few months after it opened at it was a truly amazing experience for me during a very difficult year in my life. Thank you for showing this exhibit and talking about the amazing animals that call it home. I wish a few changes could have been made such has having wild horses and allowing the smaller hoofstock mix with the elephants but over all it is still a one of a kind wildlife exhibit.
Elephant odyssey isn’t groundbreaking but it’s perfectly fine exhibit and better than most think
I’ve never heard of such a zoo area but I’m in love with the idea now, I would say I only miss like an Andean bear as substitute for a short-faced bear but I think it’s an awesome section of an awesome zoo
Now that I can't go to a zoo myself, I've just been binging episodes on your channel. I have to say that I absolutely love your videos. The quality of the videos is amazing!
Keep up the good work, can't wait for the next one!
I hope I can one day visit these amazing zoos in America, and I also hope you might be able to one day feature zoos all over the world!
That is such an amazing and unique idea! I can’t believe I haven’t heard of it before!
One of your best vids yet a good mix of animals, facts and history
Awesome job.
This is where the first video was place
The cool thing about these elephants they have really really long trunks if you know where this comes from you deserve a veteran's discount
That's my favorite part of the zoo.
I've been here so many times & never understood what they were going for - thanks for clearing it up!
That's my favorite exhibit at the zoo! 😁👍
I have personally been here before and it’s an amazing exhibit. Very interesting with the complete randomness of species but I get it I guess
I didn’t even know it was supposed to be ancient ancestors themed when I went (5 years ago)
I think you should see the Lights Before Christmas at the Toledo Zoo. Its a pretty amazing sight
Absolutely fantastic.
Amazing can’t wait for okapis and tigers
Excellent tour. Trivia Answer: Oregon Zoo
Pretty sure the last Elephant born in that zoo was 6 years ago?
All right,so here we are in front of the elephants, the cool thing about these guys is that they have really, really, really long trunks, and that's,that's cool.
And that's pretty much all there is to say.
3:41 they actually can run at 60 ish mph. theyre the ultimate long-distance runners in nature and can sustain speeds of 30 mph for 40 minutes. its kinda sad that the animals theyve co-evolved to outrun have been extinct for many millennium
It seems each of your videos get better and better. Well done!
10:15 well Jaguars were and are native to North America, so that Jaguar should represent the extinct North American Jaguar subspecies (panthera onca augusta)
Love this! I wish more zoos did this as it really looks cool!
Great video
I love the concept because I've always been obsessed with the megafauna of Ice Age North American
Yeah me too.
I love your videos! When this quarantine thing is over, PLEASE come visit the Riverbanks Zoo here in South Carolina! It’s a great zoo! I’ve been there multiple times!
I love that area it’s one of my favorite areas of the San Diego Zoo and when we went there back in 2018 on the Elephant was at one of the hoses and put it’s mouth on the hose it was so funny and great job on the Video
The zoo just got 2 new young bulls
Nice video loved it.
Love the zoo and the video you took of it
Lion Enclosure 0.07 acres... Ouch! That is tiny!
Seeing that lions sleep most of the day there isn't need for that much space, and for their activity they're giving much enrichment
Awesome video. What is your opinion of the Lion exhibit? I remember it being quite small.
Good for its original intention - for elderly cats, but I guess those are short handed right now.
Yayy! San Diego!!!
The Lions🦁 in the exhibit are siblings, a brother👨 and a sister👩.
Great video Zach you inspired me to do youtube
Are you ever going to do a series on the Bronx zoo
Answer: Reid Park Zoo, April 6 2020
WELCOME TO PLEISTOCENE PARK
May you try to do the ARCC of Zoo Knoxville when it has finished construction.By the way the ARCC is going to be a reptile house and better home for the river otters.
That’s the biggest 137 gallon pool I’ve ever seen
Easily the worst and funniest mistake I've made on the channel.
Ituri Forest when? I heard they have one of the best Nile Hippopotamus exhibit out there.
Ituri Forest would be third on the Lost Forest list, so I wouldn't be surprised if that video came out next year.
I ❤️ secretary birds
For you next zoo tours try going the Bronx Zoo in Bronx, New York and see the zoos exhibit "Madagascar".
This will be your first zoo of New York City for Episode 78.
What is the next tour going to be about
You have to go to the German zoo in leipzig
I Really Want to go There and See the Past Pictures and Today Pictures btw Asian Elephant and African Elephant closely Related to Columbian Mammoth.
I can’t wait to see the lost forest for sure because I am looking forward to seeing the lion tailed macaque the yellow backed duiker the okapi the babirusa the Pygmy hippos and one of my grandma’s and mine favorite animals the fishing cat
And fortunately, the person who helped me film got great footage of the not so active cat. We considered it the highlight of the day.
Zoo Tours okay and just saying that I can’t wait for you to do the Philadelphia zoo because I love it a lot I have been there a lot and I love it like how you can see tigers walking right over your head and seeing other animals like the giraffe 🦒 the white rhino 🦏 the hippos 🦛 the lions 🦁 the tigers 🐅 the leopards 🐆 Jaguar 🐆 the red panda the giant river otters 🦦 the fossa the aardvark and when they used to have it the red shanked douc its a kind of monkey that they don’t have any more but I love the Chinese alligator 🐊 the king cobra 🐍 the meerkat the maned wolf and many others
3:36 i live there
Hablo español(i speak spanish)
When is the Q&A, Indy Secret, and Top List?
Internet wont come til Friday
@@ZooTours Can't wait. By the way loved your African Forest promo art!
How did you make your intro? What software?
Put together purely and simply through photoshop inspired by a background poster in Parks and Rec. Each panel is its own separate image, and I aligned their pop up with the music. If you want something similar music wise, it's called a "Drum Sting"
Thanks! I made a similar looking image that I will use for my series (if you don’t mind) now that zoos in the UK will be open on June 15!
What cameras do you use
GoPro Hero 7 Silver and www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07K6Z8FM5?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
Just wondering, is The Wilds coming back next? I really want to go to Ohio and this is my best chance to experience it.
I need to go back to the Wilds because I'll be redoing the whole complex (old vs new camera)
Ok. Can’t wait!
Also, what is the next D.C. episode. Is it of the Cheetah Conservation Station, where the pandas end off, or the American Trail, where the elephants end off.
Amazonia is the only thing I have
Zoo Tours Got it. Also, in the ZooChat thread “Describe that Zoo” by Yi Qi, go to page 2 and look for the zoo name Barrington Zoo. It took me a lot of time to write it.
question did they have elphants before this
Where jawed
I ❤️🐘
9:20 that’s only 137 gallons??. Nah jk I know what u meant good vid
imagine the name of da title is elephant odyssey dis post was made by San deigo zoo gang
Can you do the Asian highlands at the Omaha zoo and the reason I am asking is because they have animals like the Indian rhino 🦏 sloth bear snow leopards Amur tiger tufted deer per David’s deer red panda goral takin and cranes and it says it is designed to simulate a mountain ascent
Zoos have to apply to receive awards. There's one indicator, another is Asian Highlands opened in 2019, meaning it won't have the chance to be awarded until this year or even the next
I thought they had a male elephant
Died in 2016
I'm waiting for anyone to reply about the idiot that climbed into the elephant enclosure with his child
Zoos. Extinction part
ZebraHorses camels lions Columbian Mammoths horses zebras girls giraffes
I have gone numerous times & layout funnels people on top of each other, poor planning if trying to view animals
