I think one of the reasons it is not popular as FFT(aside from FF brand) or other tactics, is because it's too complex for general audience. My implication is not that gamers are dumb or anything, it's just that the amount of things to take care of (stats, battlegrounds, classes, etc.), along with a plot whose complexity is at par with best of the fantasy fiction, and you've got a game only the dedicated and the enthusiasts could enjoy. That's the thing I really like about Matsuno's games, despite "typical" setting, his stories are anything but typical. Even if SE botched FF12's production, you could still see his vision.
Maybe it has something to do with this remake being a PSP game in 2011,all physical versions of March of the Black Queen being limited prints, Tactics Ogre SNES and Sega Saturn not coming out in the west, the PS1 port being a limited print as well, Ogre Battle 64 being a N64 JRPG that came out late in the system's lifespan being rare while the most legally accessible way to play the Wii U and Prince of Zenobia not leaving Japan and being on the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Knight of Lodiss was the only one to stand a chance.
No. 1- Quest didn't had much expectations on this saga for America. 2- Quest made most Ogre Saga on consoles that didn't sold well. 3- SquareEnix took too long to use this. 4- When they finally did, on PSP, again, on a console that wasn't that popular, they didn't gave it better advertisement, and morons gamers didn't knew this was the PRECURSOR of Final Fantasy Tactics. 5- Doing the same EA did with TitanFall 2 by making it compete against other better known games they owned.

Definitely, it was the same for me and it allowed me to enjoy the game a lot more, i did get frustrated with FFT when i first played (Wiegraf) so it avoided me frustration with TO
I first played Tactics Ogre on PSX and thought i'd have 3 turns to revive a character. I had this warrior called Geist that just dodge-tanked like nobody's business and helped Denim carve my way through Chapter 1. He died in the last battle of the chapter and was immediately gone forever and I fucking flipped lmao not to mention back then every character had to be levelled individually in every class and started at lv 1 upon hiring (though you could also just recruit a higher level class without it equalising so there was that)
Too bad there probably won't be another Tactics Ogre again... Used to play it when I was a kid and still to this day. Big fan of this franchise. Nice review :)

Absolutely loved this game when I played it a few years back, Found the story a little convoluted and kinda got lost with what was going on, but didnt care because the combat,character/party building, monster recruiting, pixel art, music... everything is just so damn good. I wish this game got some kind of post launch support though as it desperately needs some patches to fix some of the horrible balance issues with some classes being majorly overpowered. I've binge-watched most of your channel at this point, and I decided to finally stick a comment in. I found your channel while cruising for old-school RPG references, and was pleasantly surprised at your level of intelligence, eloquence, and fair criticism of games. Couple that with thoroughness and decent video editing, and you are one of my favorite reviewers online. Thank you, sir!
I have the PS1 version of this. One of my favorite games. I was really glad to hear about the changes made when it was remade for PSP. Really tempted to pick up a PSP just for this game. Stellar review. I look forward to more.
You can now get it for the PS Vita too. Even better, on the PS TV, which is what i got. I bought it back in the day on PSP but again on PS TV so i can play it on a big screen laid back.
This game is worth a PSP. You will be able to sink over 400 hours on one save file and only be halfway done. You can have 99 save files... Choosing to do things differently and training up units differently every time.
Why the hell have I not been subscribed to your channel? Your reviews are absolutely amazing and EXACTLY what I was looking for, looking back to the PS2/PSP and old RPGs catalog to play. Thank you so much and keep up the awesome work.
Interesting. I've heard that the strategy games on the SNES aren't particularly easy to get into and are practically an acquired taste as they're not beginner-friendly really, and that the strategy games on the Genesis are actually more beginner friendly, such as Shining Force II.
I think it is important to point out that how often you kill units effects the endings. Taking out a leader and allowing the enemy to retreat or taking out everyone, souring their national trust of you, in exchange for items.
You can level the playing field by using spells that can do so many things to help you in your victory. For example Paradigm shift to keep fighting and stop enemies from their turn, Brimestone to reset their TP, shackle to stop a specific enemy from moving similar like petrified spells etc etc etc items, spells, etc make this game so deep and optional. Yes this game can be so vast and endlessly replayable.
I'm playing this game now, I like it, but I do wish despite it being based on the war in Yugoslavia that the different groups had a unique looks it would make it easier to follow.
Nice Review! I personally don't like the Class System in this PSP Remake. Every time a Character Levels a Class, he/she gains some bonus Status Points(which the game not show to you)to the Character. Which in turn, makes it much more viable, to turn as many Characters into a Certain Class as possible. Meaning it is most beneficial to turn *all* your Melee Guys into a Knight(as example) to level that up, coupled with some Clerics. The Knights will Level the Class Faster and every Character also gets the Added Status Points benefit. Since the Enemies Scale to your Level in those _Farm Maps_ you can then later change all your guys to Berserkers ... and go in at Level 1 to level another Class. Which is what i find Dumb. They should have made every Class gain Levels up to level 10, just like in Final Fantasy Tactics ... but then they would run into trouble with that Skill System they build in(which is also dumb)... because they need the Class to have more Levels then just 10. That Skill System is, as i said also Dumb. Like you already said, there are way too many Skills available ... and they mostly _Passives_ ... That plus the Enemies seem to have Skills active that are randomized when looking at there other Abilities. Otherwise i can't explain, as to why do Enemies later on do _very little_ Damage with Spells ... so they end up to just cast Status Debuff Spells ... The Crafting System ... oh boy. Yes you are right ... why is there no option to Craft in Bulk? Also something you didn't mention(but i am sure you know what i mean) ... *why* can an Item Craft *Fail* ... if you are on the _World Map_ ... where you can *Save* ... while remembering how *Super Tedious* and *Time Consuming* it _already_ is to Craft all the *Ingredients* necessary for the Items ... so *why* should i *not* just *Save* and *Reload* if it *Fails*? Shoehorned in, as you said it ... is a big big Understatement here. They really didn't spend much time on the Crafting System here, though it could be much more than what it is right now.
Hey Andrew, another great review! I've only played the PS1 Tactics Ogre, and sadly don't have either version in my collection currently. :( I know at some point I'm going to have to pick this game up. But I appreciate hearing your thoughts on it before hand. And the PSP version being quite a bit cheaper than the PS1 does help. ;) Great video! Well done!
I played FFT before Tactics Ogre LUCT. I found Tactics Ogre to be the hardest srpg in psp.and I played the psx version of Tactics Ogre LUCT too, and it is way harder difficult than the psp version. That's just what I think. =/
It's hard to choose which is the better game; TO or FFT. I think FFTs story was a bit easier to follow, even tho it gets quite complicated. The biggest differences between the 2 are FFT has smaller battle fields and generally 5 chars (plus 2 guests) per battle. TO has easily double the space in battle and iirc some 10 or 12 party members in battle. So that in itself brings new challenges. I found it easy to forget about a party member or 2 in the letter fields and when the party is really spread out. I like the larger char sprites in FFT over the smaller in TO. The TO sprites lack the detail of the FFT sprites.
FFT is more accessible in terms of the gameplay and has much better sprites. Their soundtracks are on par though I prefer TO. Other than that I think TO is superior to FFT.
I absolutely loved the story and music in this game, but a few aspects of the gameplay drove me nuts. One of them you mentioned, which was having to start new classes at level 1, which can severely handicap your party in chapters 3 and 4. The other was the way the shops worked. There was no way to compare shop equipment to what your party was currently wearing without hopping in and out of the shop and party menus. Now this kind of thing may have been normal back in the SNES days, but is unacceptable for a 2011 release IMO. It's still a good game, but not one I will ever return to.
Thirteen 1355 Now that I think it, Terranigma is the only Enix game he's reviewed. Still, there are only a handful of Enix games that are really important, I can think only of Dragon Quest, Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile.
Games like Illusion of Gaia, Soul Blazer, Evo: The Search for Eden, ActRaiser and the prequel of the game featured in this video (Ogre Battle), are all pretty solid titles.
Been playing it for the first time and enjoy it overall. I just so hate the leveling system. Getting new classes that start out at level 1 when my main guys are 40 is a terrible pain.
High Level Reviews Yeah, got the Knight Commander, Shaman, Princess, and Ranger on my second play through when I was up to 40. Wish I got them on my first.
Actually really great content. You really deserve more subs. If I may, can I make some suggestion to get more eyeballs? If you can make two series, one for older games and one for newer games. You don't even have to do indepth stuff for the new games. Not a lot of people look for content around old games. But this is up to you obviously. Either way, you have a follower in me. Keep it up!
i had no trouble building my parties lol. guess im the minority, i enjoyed grinding and made my guys op! if anything i wished it was deeper.it was great (spoiler alert) to fight your clones in the end! it was so fufilling to beat them knowing i utilized my arsenal better even though my party was very battle savy!
would you recommend this game to someone who is new to this genere? tha major drawback for me in this kind of games is the permadeath system, because of the fear I could get stuck after 50 hours with no possibility of continuing. do you think this game is forgiving enough for a newcomer or is there something i should try first in order to be sure to avoid some punishing beginners' mistakes?
This one is tough for even strategy JPRG vets like me. Plus its hard to follow the plot while you are wracking your brain while your are trying to get past a level. Start with Valkyria Chronicles (one of my fav games). Its a bit different but has amazing art, great gameplay and a very good story. There is no permadeath for the 4-5 main characters and you can save your other incapacitated characters. FFT War of the Lions was originally a Ogre Battle game. Its a little less complex but has permadeath. FE: Awakenings and FE: Echoes you can turn off permadeath.
Teifan 667 I definitely think you should give this a go. This was the 1st tile based rpg I'd ever played and while it isn't an easy game, the combat system is very pretty forgiving for newer players. I found it easy to learn the ins an outs of it. There are some battles that can be very hard but as long as you save often you won't get punished too bad if you slip up.
I love complex games that requires strategy, this game sounds more like a glimpse into history from between 1500-1900s.. Even to this very day many of the methods of management, warfare and control are being implemented yet more refined. Mostly passive methods like petroleum, drugs, education, religion, chemical, biological [RNA] Then there are executions of unarmed denizens, using paramilitary forces against it's Denizens for e.g. Air force, Police & CIA. Disrupting and attacking peaceful protesters, having secret agents within peaceful protests attempting to encourage riots and crimes, sanctions, freedom of speech now called hate speech, speaking the truth can get you labeled as a terrorist. Etc etc etc
Indeed, story is non existent and the only reason I played it was character building only to realize it's a simple ass automatic leveling up covered with fake skills lol. I spent most time strategizing not how to beat the battles but how to stay as low level as possible to not steamroll every encounter... And it still ends up like that by the chapter4 which is already boring to begin with. It's the only game that seems decent at start but impossible to finish because it gets so boring.
God i wish there was a newer iteration of this game. I love it so much
Your wish has been granted! Tactics Ogre: Reborn releases on November 11th, 2022 for Switch, PS4/PS5 and PC (via Steam).

I really did need that, thank you.
@@HighLevelReviews no problem bro you have a new subscriber in me
bro finally I am seeing an analysis that renders on UA-cam that excellent game
Tactics ogre LUCT>>>>FF Tactics, FIGHT ME!
Keep it up!
Amazing in depth review highlighting the pros and cons, made me want to play it already!
Can someone tell me how to rotate the camera view to the top down angle on PS Vita? Can’t seem to figure it out
Love this title, keeps me going back to it frecuently, been playing it on my vitas beside my psp ... best game ever!!!!
Wish this was available on the Switch!
It will be! Tactics Ogre: Reborn releases on Switch on November 11, 2022 !
Another well made review. I actually have this game to. A great title.
i had no trouble building my parties lol. guess im the minority, i enjoyed grinding and made my guys op! if anything i wished it was deeper.it was great (spoiler alert) to fight your clones in the end! it was so fufilling to beat them knowing i utilized my arsenal better even though my party was very battle savy!
Fuck yeah.
would you recommend this game to someone who is new to this genere?
tha major drawback for me in this kind of games is the permadeath system, because of the fear I could get stuck after 50 hours with no possibility of continuing. do you think this game is forgiving enough for a newcomer or is there something i should try first in order to be sure to avoid some punishing beginners' mistakes?
Teifan 667 Try Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, no permadeath there.
Teifan 667
I definitely think you should give this a go. This was the 1st tile based rpg I'd ever played and while it isn't an easy game, the combat system is very pretty forgiving for newer players. I found it easy to learn the ins an outs of it. There are some battles that can be very hard but as long as you save often you won't get punished too bad if you slip up.
OK, so I've only 100 hours of life for a tactics game: Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy tactics?
probably would recommend ff tactics
Dimitri They are different, but you would technically be able to do more in fft than tactics ogre in 100 hours.
I love complex games that requires strategy, this game sounds more like a glimpse into history from between 1500-1900s..
Even to this very day many of the methods of management, warfare and control are being implemented yet more refined.
Mostly passive methods like petroleum, drugs, education, religion, chemical, biological [RNA]
Then there are executions of unarmed denizens, using paramilitary forces against it's Denizens for e.g. Air force, Police & CIA. Disrupting and attacking peaceful protesters, having secret agents within peaceful protests attempting to encourage riots and crimes, sanctions, freedom of speech now called hate speech, speaking the truth can get you labeled as a terrorist. Etc etc etc
What are the games in your intro?
I finished this game (psp version) but it lacked tension like ps1 version. Seems easier overall, some classes are too strong and some are useless
Archer Canopus is the strongest unit in this game
jy'igla set + crest of fire on fim = a true god
was that running on ppsspp emulator, what settings did you use to make it look so good
What's the title of the game on the 0:13th second of your video?
Grandia 1
@@ibrahimaltuwaijri575 what are all the games in the intro? I know the first is Xenogears and you mentioned Grandia, what are the others?
I just start playing this game in 4 months ago ...this game is really awesome
