This game is awesome. Why should you play it?
1. The story is engaging and the characters have depth.
2. The OST is lovely and greatly intensifies the experience.
3. The battle system is enjoyable, though it can be exploited.
Having played almost every game in the franchise, I absolutely recommend this one. Peace!
For ppl complaining about "brokenness," thats your own fault, not the game. If u choose to play in a "broken" way, thats on you. If you play the game like a normal person, its perfectly fine. Cmon now.
I agree completely.
Is it just me or does Delita's character design look a lot like Jan Rosencrantz' from Vagrant Story?

Great review. I wish they would make a new Tactics game sometime.
Did you know there are two other Tactics games?
@@johnathonturner2279 not as good as this one.
@@MrSerpico145 I think you've got your words backwards. It's "significantly better then this one".
@@johnathonturner2279 than
Try tactics ogre let us cling together on the psp. It's basically FFT but on crystal meth
So the PSP version DOES have a better translation. Thanks for informing.
perhaps more accurate, i find the psx version better and easier to read - the psp version seems to fall under the 'try hard' category without being better
Your reviews flow really well. Glad I happened upon your channel!
If you're into strategy game with a deep story this is definitely for you. I liked the gameplay and the style although Tactics Ogre Let us cling together is the better game.
imo FFT is the best srpg on psx, along with Front mission 3.Both created by square.
i agree!
04:24 Oh no! That is one of the toughest battles to beat without resorting to cheap tactics. I refuse to use those tactics in that battle, simply because I find it to be not fun. The battle after that has the absolute worst guest character AI I have ever seen. Trying to save a character that charges directly at the enemy is a pain, especially when the enemies have such a high speed stat.
This is my favorite strategy game. Love the story, characters, customization, and everything else. Sure it can be broken, but if you play it without exploiting these flaws, it can be one of the most challenging and rewarding games in the genre.
Ryan Livingston
It's unbelievable how many times I have seen people on message boards that only used one save file for the game and got stuck.
fuck that boss took me months to get the courage to beat him
Another great review. Loved the game when it was first released, but have soured on it over time. I find myself sticking with Tactics Ogre and Jeanne D'Arc. (I really wish Jeanne D'Arc would get a modern port.)
Jeanne D'Arc is REALLY good. I need to replay that really soon.
Excellent review! This is probably my favorite strategy game of all time. I really wish we could see another serious sequel in the series, I didn't like the childish feeling of the FFTA and FFTA2 games, as well as I disliked the Judge system they introduced. I replayed this fairly recently on the PSP port, which was nice but the slowdowns really bring that version down.
That precisely sums up my feelings. The tone and feel of the original hooked me.
Great review as always! FFT really have incredibly well draw sprites.
best class : ninja
another amazing review!! 👍👍👍
I played the shit out of this game for PS1 version and then the PSP version, grinded all my characters to max stats which basically my one character can complete coop missions at ease, great time.
Oddly tactical TBS is probably my favorite genre of them all, but FFT didn't hold as much appeal for me as most who adore tactical games. My absolute favorite from the Japanese side was the Shining Force series and games like X-Com and Jagged Alliance in the West. I still poured many hours into FFT and enjoyed it a lot but I think the reason it didn't make it to my all-time favorites as it did for so many is that I actually might not have liked the level of customization we had over our troops as much as most. While it tickled a side of me that got so interested in finding the most powerful job and skill combos, it made my party feel somewhat "generic" and forgettable*, and I ended up creating a rather bland and overpowered one, like sorta being able to choose what pieces I can use in Chess and I end up giving myself only queens. I imagine it just wasn't my personal cup of tea.
* I've since forgotten details about most of the characters I used in my party with the exception of a few special ones like Ramza and Delita. I remember some names like Alicia but I can't describe anything about her personality or the nature of her character and inherent fighting style except that she started off as a knight until I started messing with her jobs and made her uber powerful.
Whereas with Shining Force, it had much more limited customization over troops. But each one was so varied and unique and required very different sorts of tactics as a result, like a centaur/horse archer (May, e.g.) who boasted tremendous mobility but in exchange for a shorter bow that doesn't have the range and damage of foot archer or gunner, or Domingo, the only flying spellcaster in the game but doesn't have access to the most powerful spells nearly as quickly as spellcasters who couldn't fly. Or Bleu who can't wear any equipment since he's a dragon, but can fly and start dealing devastating breathing attacks once promoted to a great dragon, and similarly on foot with Adam, a cyborg.
I liked how those pre-made units with very specific abilities, very specific pros and cons, affected the types of decisions I made each turn, as well as adding to their sense of character.
I appreciate this review, thanks~!!
As someone who is a real sucker for tactical RPGs, complex job systems, customizable party building, and beautiful sprite art to boot, it really saddened me to give up on this game about half way through.
If I had to describe this game's admittedly ambitious design in one word, it would be *sloppy.*
I'm grateful for the modding community's devotion to repairing this game, but I feel like its fundamental design is too rough to polish.
_My search for another tactical RPG with a customizable party and job system with beautiful sprite art continues..._
There are two other FFT games.
What about this game is sloppy? I think its mostly very polished. The only flaw that seems significant to me is the difficulty curve.
Thanks for making these bro!
Nice review! But why the preference of the ps1 version over the psp?
Honestly, probably nostalgia. Hate to admit it but that was the version I first played when I was like 12 and it just grew on me, bad translation and all.
I also prefer the PS1 but my reasons are that it's a faster play through. Less job levels required for new jobs etc. Also it seems like it flows and loads more smoothly. It's just a more pleasant and faster experience
Nice review...
About the PSP version: I heard the new translation uses the same kind of "old english" as Tactics Ogre LUCT. Even though i could understand the script of Tactics Ogre, the experience was rather "alienating", as i couldn`t relate to these characters and their "uncasual" way of speaking. Is the PSP version of FF Tactics using the same language?
It does. It's better in some spots but still quite painful in others; though, the consensus seems to be that it is significantly better than the original (that's not difficult).
OK... I guess i`m going to play the PSX version then.
Good :)
Eu amo esse jogo 😍
I find this game very hard
This sounds like a game I'd love. It's like every character can build like the mc in Fire Emblem Awakening.
Also, can you maybe review a Persona game sometime?
I certainly plan on it. Can you suggest which game would be the best to start with?
Well, probably not Revelations. You might have to go with the psp remake. So maybe either of 2, 3 fes, or the original 4. I'd say 3 fes or 4, personally.
Ye rock
Great review! This game is a classic!
Another great review. One of my favorites of all time so i will try not to be biased. Ill start with the bad first:
Really apparent the translation was HORRIBLE first release. Really rough. Second was the difficulty pacing like you pointed out. There are some battles that occur where the difficulty spikes randomly that could potentially force you to return to older saves to readjust (Vielus and Gafgarrion = worst offenders). Another thing, they throw so many Overpowered hero characters at you that can make the game a joke, think they did this for casual players. Also i only have one problem with the story: it turned into another "save the world from evil beast" type of plot when 9/10ths of the game clearly did not go in the this direction.
Otherwise, one of the best plots ever, one of the best battle systems ever. Really really deep characters and questions of class, religion and privilege and runaway ambition. Considering the era it was released, the plot was waaaayyy ahead of its time and considering its an FF title, has many real world parallels and implications. Good graphics, awesome gameplay, engaging lore, and my god that story.
Great review. Easily 9.5/10. Probably bit biased this games flaws can be easily overcome, especially in the PSP versions.
This game was great back in the day. Can't say if it holds out over the years with the release of more game in this genre, though... Tactics Ogre, FFTA and FFTA2 came to mind. Oh, Delita's a piece of shit and Ramza is the hero we all deserve.
haha, I hear ya. I just feel like being told your entire class is trash and cattle and that your sister isn't worth saving MIGHT push a lot of people over the edge. He was a complicated character to me. Tactics Ogre will be reviewed eventually but man that game was difficult.
Complicated, sure I'll give you that. But dishonourable and underhanded as fuck though. Shit, he was nowhere near that final battle and still claim the kingdom to himself. I didn't play much of the first Tactics Ogre-Knight of Lodis, but Let Us Cling Together was fun on the psp, and yeah, difficult too.
Knight of Lodis was not the first Ogre game...and Let us Cling Together is a remake of the PSX Tactics Ogre, which predates FFT.
Great review, I'm happy that you pointed out how some combinations can be overpowered with customization, all good fun.
Great review! I love Final Fantasy Tactics. Its story and characters are definitely worth a single playthrough, although it took me multiple playthroughs before I felt like I "got" most of what is in the game. I missed a lot of the optional sidequests and recruiting different characters the first time I played the game. For me personally, that just gave the game replayability, as I was able to go back and rediscover all those missed secrets. But I can understand that most people probably won't play through such a long game multiple times like I do. :P I feel like one of the great joys of having customizable characters is the ability to make completely game-breaking builds. Haha. This game is so much fun to tinker and toy with to get those unstoppable characters. For those that complain about that, it is definitely avoidable and not necessary for clearing the game (as I didn't on my first playthrough). And this is a possibility of any game that allows you to customize your characters - to a degree. Like FF7 and FF8, if you know how to set up your materia or junctions in the right ways, it is easy to break the game there as well. If it isn't for you, then just ignore it. ;) I did want to go back once again and say that the story and characters are excellent. Delita is one of my favorite characters in gaming. The level of planning and manipulating that he sets into motion are great, really gets the gears turning to wrap your head around how he managed to plan all this out. And I like that he is never fully portrayed as "evil", never truly the game's antagonist, but not really on your side either. I think it would have been easy to make him the villain and fighting against Ramza, but they went much more subtle with his character.
One thing I did want to mention about the PSP version, I've heard that a lot of people prefer the PS1 version due to the slow down that the PSP version suffers from. I will say that it is definitely noticeable, but it wasn't a "deal breaker" for me. I love having the convenience of playing FF Tactics on a handheld, as I seem to have less opportunity to sit in front of a TV for long periods of time these days. :P Again, great video! :)
Mobile version lacks the multiplayer (which tactics live tournament uses a psp emulator to go online) but you get polished graphics, no slowdown and the rendesvous/melee (which is multiplayer only) equipment from poachers den postgame, which makes an onion knight easier to use. There's also that disorder in the order sidequest to get rare stuff though you'd probably need a guide to unlock postgame (they're in the brigands' den).
Also easier to entice with arcane strength (buffs speechcraft's magic success rate, with mimic darlavon working on human bosses like argath) for a total 500 jp (and even better with agrias' high holy knight magic as her 5 physical is bad) than steal a weapon (given you can't rob elmdor any more, gaffgarion's blood sword is probably the only thing worth doing so as it is life insurance to an equip swords ninja).
@@MrVariant Thanks for the info! I haven’t looked into the mobile version, but I’ll have to check it out!
@RPGtourguide sure, ask me anything. I got a playlist and update the Tactics jobs on the final fantasy fandom. Never would have guessed to slam life absorption on a self-quick mime to really keep the extra turns and life going. Even special characters that they can't copy, can quickly learn phoenix down to revive/kill undead, that can be mimicked when targeting dead air ff1 style to be epic 😎. There is also a versions page I'll make a separate comment if the link sticks. Edit: external link was deleted so just search final fantasy version differences and check tactics on the fandom (not the fft fandom, which I have no idea why that was made when original ff fandom is better).
@RPGtourguide I gotta edit for the postgame equipment as the fandom didn't state that for mobile. So thanks for reminding me indirectly.
Also the sound is too quiet, the start of the intro music is perfect to hear out of my phone speaker but then you lower the level. With a little background noise and then I cant hear the review. Thanks ;)
I did notice the volume of my voice was a little lower than previous reviews. I'll check that out next time. Thanks.
awesome dude, I look forward to watching/listening to further reviews :)
Tactics is my favorite Final Fantasy game!
I really want to try this game. I love the idea of being able to create hybrid characters and the idea of becoming game breakingly overpowered does not sound like a bad thing to me. The only thing stopping me is I honestly cant decide between this game and Final Fantasy tactics war of the lions. I tend to be a purist when it comes to these type of things an example is the fact that i feel really bad that I cant afford the SNES version of final fantasy 6 even though the ps1 version is fine. But the dialogue in the war of the lions version just seems to be such an improvement : / so im lost. I dunno which one to play : /
The dialogue is absolutely improved and the added cutscenes are excellent. You can't really go wrong with either one.
WOTL has more content.
why they don't do remake of ps1 games
Uh, hello? War of the Lions?
great review bro.
psp
nice i love this game I'm playing it right now in the hard mode that I created myself leaving the bosses stronger in the way they should be
Btw what is the intro music? I have heard it used in a gaming audio podcast called logik something something. Cant fully remember.
I'ts called Ouroboros and it's a royalty free track you can find on several sites.
That's awesome thanks, I like it.
loved the game and loved the review. however in your review ou stated how the battlefield can be difficult to place your units due to obstructs kinda bothered me due to the fact you stated the map can be zoomed in and out and rotated. Did you know you could tilt the map, and if so you didn't state you could.
+Torg Torgeson thanks! And yeah, i still found the angles and obstructions to be problematic. They could have done a lot better with camera control in general.
and to clarify, even with the ability to rotate and change the angle, there were STILL problems. Hope that cleared it up.
I'd play it, but I hate Ivalice so much that I can't stomach it. Thanks FFXII!
Great review, as always!
