Sami clothes aren't traditional Finnish clothes in the first place, the Sami are a different people to the Finns, and Finnish people have a completely different national costume, which is pretty similar to the national costumes of Norwegians. The Sami will also take great offense if a Finnish person wears their traditional clothing

Im shocked how everyone thinks the clothes are inspired by finnish national costumes. The hats they wore looked a lot like the ones sami people in lapland wear (More specifically sami men wear them). I think it is weird to even assume that finnish people would get offended when we are not even the ones being resembled in the video. For what I have heard, Sami people usually think that wearing their traditional clothing when you aren’t considered sami is very offensive. Their clothes mean so much to them because it tells other where your family comes from, where you were born etc.. I am not sami but I would assume this would be offensive. Sorry for my english and also this is my opinion and I could be wrong. Don’t attack me 😅

there is always people who are offended for one reason or two, what comes to clothing if we start to limit traditional clothes or things that look a likes only to origin countries then world start to be quite dull place and some people are naked as almost every clothing has some origins on traditional clothing.

@@freezedeve3119 Yeah, but it's not cool to water down and abuse traditional dress of a coulture that is at an underdog position and fighting to survive. A lot of Sami tradition has disappeared. I feel sad that Finns have forgotten about their coulture, I don't want the same to happen to the Sami and I want to respect their coulture and let them embrace it.

    • @freezedeve3119

@@raapyna8544 fighting to survive? you make it sound so serious, no one is trying to stop you living on your traditional way so if your traditional way is not popular anymore it has reason for it, people want something more or something else, world is in constant change and you have change with it.
Sami people always accuse other Finns for treating them badly but in reality studies made earlier, (Sami people complaining about those studies), made it known that Sami people are there and now Sami people have some laws that give some special rights that no other Finns have so i do not know what they are complaining.

Freezed Eve Well it is that serious, Sámi people And the sami way of life was pushed down(illegal) for a few hundred years, the language was banned in school, If you had a sami last name you could not own land, your were taxed higher than native Swedish/Norwegian/finns.
Do you even know how hard the fight was for us to even get the same rights as other nationals?
Sámi kids used to be abused by teachers for talking their mother’s language.
      forced sterilization was a thing.
Sámis could only own land If They changed their last name etc.
And the «special» rights you are talking about are there to make sure we get to live the traditional way, work with reindeers, collect from nature and keep our lands out of the hands of colonial powers(such as Finland, sweden And Norway),
even to this day samis are treated like animals.
Even today some sámis are ashamed to discuss their Sami heritage.
So I will not let somebody who doesnt live our life tell me that its not that serious. I will not let somebody who has no idea How we have it tell ME anything about How we or I should feel!

  • @veeb4

I think that most finns find that commercial kind of funny in a stupid way😅 It doesn't feel that offensive, but the other thing is that what Sami people think about it... I know some Samis and they are very proud and protective towards their own culture. So as far as I know, levan polkka is from Savo or maybe Carelia (I'm not sure but not from north that's for sure.) So it feels a bit wrong to connect that song with "traditional" Sami clothing. Also there is no general Sami clothing because every Sami area (there are Samis in all northern countries, Norway, Finland, Russia...) has it's own unique handmade clothing. So I think that commercial is some way seen as cultural appropriation. That hat is obviously giving that traditional Sami hat vibe, but cause the colors and basically everything is wrong, I don't know if it should be even seen offencive🤔

A "regular" Finn can't really disapprove or approve these commercials much since the clothing the man wears in them is made to resemble the traditional garment of the Saami people, living in Nothern Finland. Imagine if someone made similar commercials but with Native American clothes on, this is pretty much the same thing but with the style of another minority. To me this seems like cultural appropriation.
Any Finn can say they don't mind Ievan Polkka playing in the background, the Santa Claus beard or that they don't mind the birch forest behind the dude, but the clothes belong to the Saami people and they should be the judges when wondering if this is offensive or not.

While it is pretty offensive and racist commercial, but I don't think anyone in Finland knows or cares about it. I think the biggest problem is that it is so inaccurate, it they had used even some more proper references, it would be more ok. Most of it also represent Sámi people, and not actually Finnish people, and not in a positive way, and they are already very touchy about their culture being constantly cheapened and ridiculed by Finns
I think most if not all Finns will be most shocked, that this is somehow supposed to represent Finnish culture or people. They even got the "ievan polkka" wrong with "Leva". "ievan" means Eeva's in older Finnish
I have stumbled on the negative stereotypes it promotes when I lived in Japan and Koreans would nonstop come shout that "Leva Leva" at me and commenting how I don't look and act like "proper" Finnish. It made no sense to me at the time, until I saw these commercials later on

Sure, it would've been nice to see some authentic traditional clothes, but Finland has so many different variants depending on which region you are from that it was simply easier to just go with the minty green color. Also, the minty green is super well known in Korea, so I don't really mind. Ultimately I hope that more people become interested in Finland, especially Koreans, since our histories are so similar (and our love of saunas)

I am from Finland and really didn't know that Xylitol was maybe 1st and only thing they know about Finland. In Finland the advertisement for it has always been chewing gum and just toothpaste ads + no dancing santa clauses =)

The commercial looks cute to me, not that I recognise much of actual Finland in it lol. As several people have pointed out, the costume isn't actually Finnish traditional clothing but of Sami people, and they usually are very protective of their culture. (I do understand why, though.) As for the Finnish people, we are happy about (positive) attention and people knowing we exist. 😂 Hyvä hyvä!

When I first heard about the og commercial from my korean friends, I was low-key shocked. But in a good way! The fact that Finland is known for xylitol is actually pretty cool!
It’s is such an everyday thing for us and we’re basically forced to eat xylitol gum after every meal since we’re small children, so we really don’t think too much about that 😂 Both of these commersials are really cute and funny, especially the first one! The ”hyvää hyvää” prase is catchy 👍🏻
The only problem in newer one might be the costume and how it replicates traditional sami costume (cheap sami costume replicas are a problem in Finland too)...
But besides that, it’s really nice to learn what makes Finland famous in other countries. To know that these commercials might be the first touch of Finland for some koreans... I don’t think that’s such a bad thing!

Hah, hah! Unbelievable (the 2019 commercial). So funny. The sound effects when he pulls his hat strings and the jar pops open, and then the video game in the end.. the whole style of it is comedy. Yeah they have some sort of Sami hat... but green, and I don't know what the rest of the outfit is.. there are some national outfits with white socks, but of course that is just made up. I'm not offended. And really Ievan Polkka fits well in a commercial like that, and it is a folk song, so yeah, go for it. At least if I meet a Korean tourist now, I know why he/she says "hyvä, hyvä." How on earth did they pick that one word?
How do you find all them inserts in your video? No don't tell me, I'm not a content creator, I'm just saying that this was so funny video from you too. Ah, you're still determined to learn the song! Maybe you will become a celebrity in Korea or Finland when you nail it, hah, hah, that would be cool.
I've seen UA-cam videos of Japanese commercials. I'm going to check Koran ones now. The Japanese are famous of how weird (at least from European cultures perspective perspective) they are. I just hope that American-style commercials haven't ruined what Koreans do.

Finns don't have bubblegum before going to sleep but they usually brush their teeth, and some toothpastes have xylitol. I have probably sometime chewed some gum in the evening if I was on a trip somwhere and didn't have a toothbrush with me. But usually people chew gum after a meal.

Roki, you mean it could have been offending had they worn Sami (it's Sami or Saami in English) outfits? I recall someone non-Sami wearing a Sami costume in independence day celebration got rebuking feedback. American natives have given feedback of same issue. But it's a different thing in a commercial or a movie, they are playing a role. So even if it had been a Sami costume (which it wasn't), that shouldn't be offending.

I'm a 40-year-old Finnish man, and I probably wouldn't even know about Ievan Polkka if it weren't made famous by Japanese animators and then by every fan who watched the anime it was featured in. We have lots of really catchy polkkas here, and this one wasn't popular when I grew up. Also I always thought that old Korean xylitol commercial was made that way because the Koreans tried to bring in Santa Claus (who is from Finland just like xylitol), but they didn't even know he doesn't wear a green suit, so in my mind it was cute. Here's the most popular Finnish polka: ua-cam.com/video/gZx1zl_sVTI/v-deo.html
