  • Our .22lr Conversion Kits have been a popular product since we released them. The ability to shoot your AR and keep ammo cost down is always a good thing. Since releasing it, there have been many updates and changes in the kits, and magazines. Here, Mike takes a look at the history of our conversion kits.

This kit is the whole reason I was able to get into AR-15s, I’m a not so rich parent of 3 and if it wasn’t for this kit I’d never have been able to shoot or practice with my AR-15s, thank you CMMG 🙏

I have probably put 20k rounds through my old bravo kit and have never once had a shell end up in a standard ar15 charging handle.

Had a Ciener from decades ago. Bought some Blackdog mags and it ran well. Bought a CMMG and it is still working well. Then I picked up a dedicated CMMG upper. It’s nice to have an actual .22 barrel.

I've used your kits for quite some time and I find them to be an invaluable training tool. Thanks for making great conversion kits! My first AR15 was a CMMG M4 style WASP that I got as a kit about 15 years ago. I miss that gun (it lives with a family member now and is still running great, btw).

I bought one of these off of a friend yesterday, he said that he didn't like the point of impact shift. 🙄
But I've been running the hell out of it today and I love it!
The only gripe I have is this thing is the king of light strikes. It could be because of my LaRue trigger, but I don't know. I removed the firing pin spring, and the thing runs like a sewing machine. I might get a stronger hammer spring so I can reinstall the firing pin spring, because I assume it's there for a reason.
I was surprised at how well it runs subs, once I found that out, I wanted to marry the damn thing. 😂
I just can't get over how much fun running subsonic .22s I an AR is! The money savings is pretty damn nice, too.

The 'Original' kit was made by Jonathan Arthur Ciener and referred to as the JAC. Later a man named Rick Kuhel (sp?) made dedicated barrels for the JAC conversion with a feed ramp adapter that replaced the chamber adapter. This meant you had a dedicated .22 upper, but it was ridiculously reliable and you weren't spitting bare lead down your good .223/5.56 barrel. The JAC kits were hard to get ahold of because of lower production numbers and the Kuhel barrels were even fewer so. CMMG was the fist to provide units to supply the market, but first runs had some issues and could be finicky. Now they are making units the standard for AR .22 conversions.

I bought mine based on all of the good reviews. My experience has been terrible. Feed issues, casings getting stuck. Tried Winchester, CCI and Aguila. Also added the bore buddy and upgrade kit. In frustration I emailed CMMG customer service and never got a response. Bought a 10/22 and it runs flawlessly.

Tips from years of using this during 0 degree celius and lower(less energy in the bullet due to temp and low quality ammo tends to be on the cheap side with energy):
Wash the inside of the magazines, or buy new ones. 22lr carbon and 22lr gunk that is applied to the bullets (sticky stuff) gets inside and causes failure to feed.
Polish the steel, yes you heard me, pull the BCG and the plate apeart, and polish it good, as in the contact surfaces.(the plate and the bcg touching area, NOT the slide area touching the inside of the upper) Do not use oil on it after. Polish did more for reliability than anything else. Use fine paste, as in polish paste, as you are just supposed to make the surface smoorth and reduce resistance, not remove metal!
Even the new cmmg charging handle gets things stuck. Check the upper gas port and see if you can fill in more mass to close it off in the cmmg custom charing handle. Or make a custom upper, and reove the gas pipe and stake the hole in the barrel. Or get a actual 22lr barrel that has a 1:16 or something, made for 22lr.
Even with all of the above...it still fails, but less. Major problem with 22, is not the solution here, it is terrible amunition.
Most failures are FTE and FTF, and this is a complex problem created by a multitude of causes. not just one thing. The above can helps to alleviate some of it.

Bought one last month. First mag was a nightmare. Probably 10 problems. Tried a higher velocity ammo and oiled it again…same issue. 3rd mag was CCI mini-mags and it worked better still several problems. Went back to the first ammo, brown box Federal bulk and it shot flawless. Then it started eating ammo like crazy. Burned through maybe 150 more rounds and other than the occasional spit of gas it is working great.

The very best upgrade that can be made to these kits is the crescent shaped firing pin from Bore Buddy, which provides much more surface area for striking the rim of rimfire ammo. I have spent way too much money on a 4.5" Solo Blaster variant with all of the Bore Buddy goodies and a binary trigger. The thing runs flawlessly and catches plenty of attention at the range.

I didn't know there was a probability of a jam using the standard charging handle. That hasn't happened to me in thousands of 22. But it's good to know. I love this adapter. It works perfectly fine with the ammo I have in a small 4" 1:7 5.56 upper works perfectly. The ammo I have doesn't shoot very accurate out of my 16" 1:9 dissipator upper.

I made a PVC pipe holder that stores either the Bravo or the regular BCG depending on which one is not installed in the rifle. Just a short length of PVC pipe with two friction fit caps. I wrap the BCG in a piece of paper towel and slide it in the tube. I lost the rubber boot, other wise I'd keep it on the conversion kit. What size rubber hose (gas line) do I need for a snug fit?
Lastly: Put a quarter between the BCG and the buffer spring will reduce the rattle when the conversion kit is installed. It acts like a shim and puts just enough pressure against the BCG. Just push it into the buffer tube as you close the upper.

If you see how many we sell, the people that have issues are quite a low percentage overall. Unfortunately the people with no issues aren't as vocal as those with issues. Unfortunately it is .22lr which can be finicky itself. There is good ammo, and bad ammo. While we'd love to say they'll shoot everything, some ammo just doesn't work well in everything. We find 36grain copper jacketed projectiles are most reliable. We use bulk Winchester or Federal for our test firing, so nothing extravagant.

I've had one of these for about four years. I've shot thousands of rounds through it. It's incredibly reliable. Especially for 22. I rarely have problems with it and if I do it's because it's dirty or the ammo. This kit is one of the better investments I've ever made tbh. I don't have the charging handle for it either 🤷 I love this thing. If I had more money I'd buy one for everyone I know cause they're awesome and make training really cheap.

Ammo, change ammo. I even had this issue with a 10/22. It simply didn't like that ammo, so it was used in another

But they still need aftermarket bore buddy reliability parts kits to run right, unfortunately.

We've got event firearms with tens of thousands of rounds that don't need them. We've found that ammo selection is probably the biggest factor for reliability. Let's face it, some .22 ammo just lacks in that area. But, if using those kits makes you happy with how it runs, we can't find fault in that. The beauty of the AR platform, it's so customizable.

How well does the 22 works since the barrel has a larger diameter. The rifling/twist rate will not effect the the 22, how does this affect accuracy over a traditional 22 rifle?

    • @CMMG
      @CMMG  Місяць тому +1

the primary effect will be from the twist rate. it's not going to be as accurate as a dedicated .22lr, but will surprise you

      The diameters are the same (.224″). .223 is actually .224" & 22LR is actually .224". A .40 S&W & 10mm are the same. 9mm & .357 Sig are the same. And on and on!
