This was very well done. When you run into an obstacle and you pause and return, you save a lot of time that might not be as critical as talking through what you did to overcome the problems you run into along the way. Great quality, great resolution, great articulation of the details of the project at hand. Excellent video production!!!
Huge thanks young man, great video, I have owned a few beetles, but now retired the lady next door wants her 1971 1302 ( it's rat rod body finnish) raised in the rear. Huge thanks for reminders
Awesome video. I'm looking to get a 68+ Beetle to slowly convert to Class 11 style for daily driving and casual forest service road exploration. Nothing high speed or crazy, just enough to be both useful and fun. Unless of course I get my hands on one that's already in that style. I'd rather not have full on baja since the engine is more exposed to elements, thieves, and vandals.
I use flush fitting rather almost flush fitting tire valves they have a cap with an 'O' ring to lock them on using a coin or flat head screwdriver I have never lost a cap, and never knocked a valve out again, better than welding a hoop to protect the rubber ones as this makes it hard to get the airline on. Going to enjoy this build if it as good as your truck builds it will be a nice bug.
You did a great job explaining the simplicit the job. Question though. We were able to adjust the trailing arm one notch, no problem, but the result looks like its still in the stock position. Seriously may have only raised up 1/4" if we're lucky. I'm thinking we should have gone as many as 3 notches. Any thoughts? Thanks for this video, we've been waiting for years for a quality explanation.
I lifted my 71 squareback… I got really good at changing out cv axles as the increased angle is hell on them. At the time there wasn’t any modified axle configuration to solve the issue. Good luck! And you might want to keep a built up axle or two in your toolbox
Thanks for the chart. I want a full 3' lift on my baja. I understand the will be an issue with the shock mount ( shock length ) and the stopper lug and bottom rear bolt . Intending to move the lower shock mount, as it would hit the ground anyway and probably get bent, allowing a refit of standard length shock. not sure if its a good idea to notch the spring plate , although this would be easier than the alternative. Seeking advise here.
Very good and short video, so after lift the rear of the VW beetles up can I use wheels of size 16" in the back part? hope so! , please correct me, am I right?, thanks
How much does the powder coat run where you took them? My old job used San Diego powder coater next door to vee parts but I never saw they invoices so I have no clue on cost.
It is a Milwaukee 3/8" stubby impact, absolutely love it! Dont quote me but I believe it is good up to 250 ft-pds. There are very few things it cant take off.
I need advice on how to get clearance for my shock towers. We have been debating on a 3 inch lift since that's the only option we have found. We don't need 3 inches for clearance
This helped me a lot, i'm doing a conversion right now to a short torsion bar. i needed more room for my 31x10.5R15 wheels :D only problem is the torsion bar i got was a 28mm 21 3/4 and they're a bit hard to put it back cos it's more stiffer than the oem long torsion bars. i'm gonna have to put the engine back first to add some weight
I have seen where guys have ground that lip away for more droop then strapped it before the shocks over extend and the drive shafts don't pop out or fall apart. Is this a useful mod to do, as I am hunting for a bug with a Baja panel kit, I want an early kit as I am not a fan of those you can buy now, I Know the fibreglass may be on it's way out, but I just prefer the early one's look. How come you are not doing your red one as you started it and was looking good.
That is a mod that people do! If I build the whole car to race class 11 I will do this. For now, just rotating the rear torsions and installing a replacement shock. I ended up selling the red bug for a few reasons, mostly because of some of the features that make the 69-70 bugs more suitable for racing.
Great video. Thanks for posting. Looks like you are in the San Diego area. If interested in doing some work for me on my 1974 Thing let me know. John San Clemente
Hi guys, would this still work if I need to get the rear fenders from rubbing the tires when people are in it? I replaced the rear shocks with new Sach’s shocks and while they ride nice and sits well when empty, they bottom out on the tires instead of the stop when anyone’s in it. The fronts are fine. Wish someone had taller stops available lol. What sucks is that the tire/fender rear clearance is about 3 inches before anyone gets in the car. So I’m thinking it’s either raise both sides 1 spline or get coil rear shocks so I can adjust where it bottoms out (to get it above the tires). This is definitely cheaper but not sure if it will work, and if the shock will just travel farther and still bottom out. Ideas?
Coil shocks DO NOT change where the suspension stops. If the tires rub when you hit a bump, they will still rub if you "lift" it and you hit a bump. Try tires and or wheels that aren't so wide or tall that they rub the fenders. If the tires just rub the rolled edge of the fender, you can flatten that like class 11 racers do. Hammer and dolly if you're not worried about the paint, or Eastwood sells a tool for that. If you want to keep wider tires, there are wider than stock fiberglass fenders available.

I don’t get that chart? 2 inch lift= +9,-9? On the video you moved it one spline to gain quite a bit of lift! At least two inches. You opened your hand in the gap! So, I want approximately two inch lift. Move it one spline, right?
yes! The +9 -9 means that you need to rotate the inner spline 9 splines and the outter 9 splines the other way. Since there are a different number of splines on the inner and outter sides of the torsion bar, this will lead to a ride height change. If you look one spot down on that chart, you see that if you rotate just the outter spline +1 (what I did in the video) you will get a ride height change of 2.17". I hope this makes sense!
Never trust a jack stand. My grandpa lost three fingers and a thumb with his hand under a wheel hub in about the same spot your leg was. Great video though.
That one spline rotation sounds like it will be perfect. Good enough dude. Thanks

Please do more of this type of content LOVE THISSSS
Mixture of gearhead vehicles fellas! Love it!
This video is straight to the point. Thanks a bunch!
Have to do this to my 1600cc Boom Trike. Great vid mate
Thanks for this. It's just what I needed to raise the rear suspension for my 68 Beetle project car. Very informative.
She is an amazing woman, such a cool personality.
The bug is cool too.
Welcome back
I like your videos . Thanks for the big effort 👍
Excellent. Nice, short, to the point. Thank you!
This is well explained. Nice work. A good way to fit more beefed up back tyres
Good to see you guys again
Keep up the awesome content
Good vid, thx for the well explained tips and hints 🥰
Good stuff! Looking forward to the next video!

Great instructional video!!!!
Thanks for the reindexing chart!
glad it is helpful!
Great presentation and information. Keep up the good work.
great explanation! only problem is didn't show the final product! but thanks!
Simple and excellent!!

What effect does this have on handling and driving

Would be good to know WHERE to put the floor jack to raise the beetle before placing the jack stand, no?
does this change the stiffness of the rear suspension?
Good to see you guys!!! Been awhile 😕
I know! Glad we are back
She got the lope tune boy
Excellent video, I just got my hands on a 66 Baja Bug. Where in Cali are you?
This suspension is very different from the Beetle susp here in Brazil...
Do you have a video on lifting rear with swing type suspension?
Very good and short video, so after lift the rear of the VW beetles up can I use wheels of size 16" in the back part? hope so! , please correct me, am I right?, thanks

my 73 can sit out in a Missouri winter and start anytime and i dont even have to pump the pedal usually
Never stick your legs under it!
I had a friend loose both legs changing a flat because the stand failed.
Great job
Well done
The Mufflers sound Great!!!
thank you! Video doesn't do it justice, I will get some driving clips in Ep.3 !
Oooo new wings vid
1 turn of a spilen anti or clock wise inner or outer is 7deg
How do you pass the steel stop in the back of the arm?
Looks great.
Great video. What impact do you use? I know it’s a Milwaukee but what’s the torque of it and do you like it? Lookin for a new one. Thanks!😎🇺🇸
It is a Milwaukee 3/8" stubby impact, absolutely love it! Dont quote me but I believe it is good up to 250 ft-pds. There are very few things it cant take off.
Thanks for the info!
So the stop on the on the fram by the spring plate dont have to be ground off? Caise it gonnea limit the travel down for lowering the spring plates
Ok, now I want to get a bug. (I have always wanted one).

By moving the inner or outer spline down one tooth that's the equivalent of degrees setting which is way to much for 22mm diamtertorsionbars
Good
dang i thought you guys were going to beam or ttb swap the XJ
You didn't grind off the "ledges" so you didn't "raise" the rear! 🤣👍✌

What happened to the red bug ??
sold it a while back! Was looking for a 69-70 for a while to replace it and finally got this one
